Jimmy Palmiotti has worn just about every hat in comics, artist, writer, editor, publisher, and creator, but today we're focusing on some of the stories that have defined his career and some exciting new work hitting shelves right now.Jimmy joins us to talk about his latest return to Marvel's hardest-edged vigilante in the new Punisher miniseries with artist Dan Panosian. We'll discuss Frank Castle's latest mission, the collaboration with Dan, and what makes the Punisher such a compelling character decades after his debut. We'll also dive into Jimmy's Daredevil/Punisher crossover series, bringing together two heroes whose ideas of justice couldn't be more different. Then we'll look back at one of Jimmy's most celebrated runs, his long partnership with Justin Gray on Jonah Hex and All-Star Western. From weird western adventures and horror stories to the streets of Gotham in the Old West, those books helped redefine what a western comic could be and remain fan favorites to this day.And we'll wrap up with Denver, the acclaimed creator-owned graphic novel from Jimmy and Justin Gray that's now back in print through Mad Cave Studios. We'll talk about revisiting the book, why its themes still resonate, and what it means to see a new generation of readers discover the story.
Today I get a chance to talk to Brian Wickman to discuss Grit Trade Paperback Vol. 1 for Mad Cave Studios as the project is reimagined as it was a 3 issue release on Scout Comics in 2020. With Kevin Castaniero doing artwork we see the tale of Old Man Barrow an aged Monster Hunter paired with a Witch named Ari who's conventional Magic is a little too much for the Aged Hunter's liking as he is set in his ways. We have Goblin Gang's, Talking Birds, and Comedy as this tale can shift on a dime from straight violence to hilarity ensuing.Written by Brian WickmanArtwork by Kevin CastanieroColors by Simon GoughLetters by Micah Myers
This episode was an absolute blast to record. Ryan has written for film, television, and even a novel (Winders), and so it was fascinating listening to him talk about how he approaches a project depending on the medium. Ryan is also an actor and director and I think has a unique approach to storytelling, especially when it comes to comics, and his love for this medium shines through. For television, Ryan has written for Marvel's Legion, Skins, Queen of the South, and Wu-Tang: an American Saga. We talk about his early musical ambitions, his film Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best, kids growing up now versus the 1990s, the importance of horror, and, of course, Tim Seeley. Ryan instantly attained the status of a guest I hope to have back on again soon. Issue 2 of Pretty Hate Machine will be out May 27, 2026 by Mad Cave Studios. The American in the Chronicle Chamber crew, Scott Waldyn, jumps on the podcast this week to interview Juancho Vélez, the incredible colorist behind Defenders of the Earth, Defenders of the Earth: Dark Destiny, The Phantom vs. The Sky Band #1, and the upcoming The Phantom vs. The Red Dragons #1 from Mad Cave Studios. For comic book fans, Juancho Vélez has made a name for himself by contributing beautiful and rich colors to titles across the Mad Cave Studios slate, as well as work at DC and Marvel Comics. His eye for detail and knack for creating lasting moments through the use of light, darkness, and color informs readers' understanding of a scene. In this interview, Scott and Juancho talk about the art of coloring, including some behind-the-scenes of what went into creating some of the more colorful moments in Defenders of the Earth and The Phantom vs. The Sky Band #1. Questions asked:How many comics would you say you've colored? You've worked on both Defenders series at Mad Cave Studios. While very much in sync with the cartoon series, it has a grown up tone. I attribute that to your coloring work. How do you find the right tone to hit?Do you receive directions from editorial or communicate with the artist? Are there color palettes or preferences you have to keep in mind when working on licensed characters? With The Phantom vs The Sky Band, there are big contrasts between light and dark, from Baroness' mansion to a battle surrounded by flames, and a nighttime water rescue. What's your approach to balancing and juggling these colors? What's something you think readers should pay attention to with coloring?Where do you draw inspiration from? Whose art inspires you? What are some of the books you're most proud of? What are the standouts that surprise you?Are there characters/titles you'd love to work on that you haven't yet?Where can comic readers find you?Find Juancho Vélez on his Instagram profile at: https://www.instagram.com/juancho.velez25/. Look for his work in The Phantom vs. The Red Dragons #1 coming in June 2026!We are looking to interview more creators from the Mad Cave Studios comic book series, please contact us if you have any specific questions you would like to see asked. In this episode, Jermayn Parker and Stephen East are joined by Scott Waldyn, Chronicle Chambers USA's correspondent, to review the first five issues of the new series from Mad Cave Studios. The Singh Brotherhood is on the hunt for their missing drug cargo. Little do they know they have landed in the Phantom's backyard. What they think will be a quick and easy track, retrieve, enslave the village, and be out again turns into a dire game of cat and mouse, with the cat not realising it is actually the mouse. But it's no walk in the park for the Phantom, though; this is the jungle, and the jungle has its own mind. There is beauty in its danger, and if you can be at one with it, then you may just get out alive. We have 5 copies of a variant cover by Boom Tube Comics exclusive drawn by Keith Williams and one copy of Cover 1G by Natacha Bustos to give away. To enter, we will need your review and/or thoughts of the series on either the social media post promoting this podcast or on YouTube. We discuss many topics and we would love your input on what we have raised plus what we may have missed. We discussed: Did the showing of the Phantom eyes in the first issue straight away turn the hardcore fans off? What do we think of The Phantom's characterization along with the other main characters like Guran, Diana and Asif Singh? Was Guran's redesign a sign of the times to ensure we did not have a fat black man being featured? The Bandar are a “poison tribe,” and this story seems to suggest it's because they're all skilled and lethal. Does this newer definition make sense to us?Has the village ever been depicted in other comics by Frew or Fantomen or by creators like Lee Falk and Tony DePaul?Scott Waldyn called this series an “adaptation” of The Phantom in his last review. Do we agree or disagree? Are we happy with the balance Ray tiptoed with the white saviour concept? The Singh pirates called themselves tigers on the radio. Is this a nod to the "Ten Tigers" Old Jungle Saying?Does the Phantom need his stripped jocks back?Did we have too many covers by Mad Cave Studios?Do we like Ray Fawkes work as the writer of the series?Do we like Russell Olson's work as the artist of the series? This series featured a quick-witted Phantom, so we like this? The drugs came from the mountains. Is this the Eastern Dark? The Phantom as the Guardian of the Eastern Dark was mentioned on page 9 in issue 1 by the wife of Guran's dad.Lee Falk never got in-depth with other characters. In this we see the minds of Asif Singh and Guran. Do we like getting to know these secondary characters better?Did Lee Falk ever have the Phantom think to himself as much as Ray Fawkes?Who's the real hero here? Guran or the Phantom?Do we like the Sky Band being featured?Should Mad Cave Studios do a Phantom crossover with another character, and if so, who? What's next? You can email us at chroniclechamber@gmail.com or chat with us via our social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram. Show Notes 0:00: Another episode of Justin and Helen discussing everything they’ve been up to over the past few weeks, which may include a musical and some J-Novel Club reads along the way. The two hosts also get into a bit of nostalgia for no real reason… News 17:30: Last episode, the news of Media Do acquiring Seven Seas just happened like roughly an hour or two before the two hosts started recording. It’s been two weeks, which means more information has come forth, including Media Do and Seven Seas having to make assurances that AI will not be used in any future works moving forward…let’s just say the hosts have some concerns! 27:55: The victim in the Shoichi Yamamoto/Shogakukan scandal released a statement on the entire situation, and that means Justin and Helen have more thoughts on how the company’s handling the situation and how well they can honor the victim’s request while also ensuring their culture will change moving forward. But let’s just say the hosts have worries about how they’ll handle it, considering their history. 37:32: Helen talks about a number of plaintiffs filing a consumer digital privacy class action complaint against Crunchyroll, which alleges that Crunchyroll violated the Video Privacy Protection Act. For her, the timing could not have been any more interesting; Justin meanwhile goes over Dark Horse essentially letting their Founder and CEO Mike Richardson go and what this means for the publisher moving forward. 42:36: RuriDragon will be on hiatus until late April; The Detective is Already Dead Season 2 will not air in the summer, it has been pushed to the Fall season; And I Became a Legend After My 10 Year-Long Last Stand will also be delayed, it’s now planned to air in the summer. 43:48: Chitose in the Ramune Bottle will return following it’s production issues in the Fall season; Tomato Soup is back following maternity leave, which means A Witch Life in Mongol will return next week; and we unfortunately will say goodbye to another Japanese manga magazine, as Mag Garden has ceased publication, and with their comment on why the magazine’s ending, Justin wonders if the manga market shrinking has played a big role. 48:13: Voice actress Yukie Maeda has passed away due to her health; voice actress Masako Ikeda died on March 3 from a cerebral hemorrhage; and Kyoto Animation announced that its president and co-founder Hideaki Hatta died on February 16 — the hosts go over the loss of each of these talents and people, and wish sincere condolences to their family and friends. Licenses 52:57: Titan Manga announced exclusively on ANN that they’ve licensed the following manga for release in 2026: Tomonori Inoue’s Huck the Air Pirate and the Princess of Steam and Shinachiku’s The Regalia of the Underdog; We will see another H.P. Lovecraft novel adapted by Gou Tanabe published by Dark Horse, this one coming in September; and Mad Cave Studios’ imprint Nakama Press, in partnership with Tatsunoko Production, announced on Friday that it will release the first volume of its Casshan manga by writer Mario B. Long and Kusanagi on September 15. 54:41: Justin and Helen brought up DMP/DMG while talking about Blupetal, who just launched a Kickstarter for Sakura Kurihara’s Let Me Fix You last week (and it has already reached its goal); Japan-based indie publisher Red String announced at CitrusCon that they've licensed Yoshika Komatsu's The Elf Husband and Dwarf Wife (will exclusively be on Omoi on March 22) and Arakata's Funny Bone; The newest Crossed Hearts title has been announced and it'll be going for their Glam Beat (Yuri) line — Mei Fujimatsu’s Time is a Closet; And we got more Siren audiobooks incoming — 3 of them! 58:19: With Manga Planet closing March 31, we finally know where some of the titles will go — Renta! They’ve announced a special transfer program that will allow Manga Planet users access to chapters/volumes purchased on the service, so happy that some of the titles (they won’t be able to bring them all) will exist in some way, this time on Renta!. Streaming News 59:15: Justin and Helen go into Amazon raising their ad-tier prices for reasons, but hard to say if the reasons are good; Prime has added the Lupin the IIIrd: Zenigata and the Two Lupins net anime to their service. 1:01:18: Helen is now wondering about Justin’s tastes following his enthusiastic announcement of a show he has never watched (Queen’s Blade: Vanquished Queens) that is now available on Oceanveil; If you’re not into 18+ stuff, Oceanveil will also add the Black Jack OVA with an English dub to their service. 1:03:00: More 4K Ghibli is happening in theaters, so be on the lookout for a few of their heralded films in the spring; ODK Media’s North American streaming platform Amasian TV began streaming the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime with the English dub in the United States and Canada…Justin wonders if this can actually be a streaming service to look out for in the future. 1:04:33: DOROHEDORO Season 2, despite it airing in April, has taken a while for much news to come out. Not anymore! A trailer has come out for it, with also the news that in addition to Netflix it will also stream on Crunchyroll; Retrocrush has added a couple shows to their service, with Black Jack: The Complete OVA Series arriving on their service early next month. Weird News 1:06:32: Justin ends up reflecting on the origin of TheOASG Podcast, and how when Muse came up with doing this, no one could’ve expected Pokémon, The White House, and Nintendo to even be considered in the same sentence as a topic. But we have also that (and Yu-Gi-Oh! also!) in this section. In case you needed to know how weird the news can be. 1:10:24: Let’s just say The Evangelion short that was recently released by Khara had some issues, issues that eventually led the studio to release it themselves and for both Justin and Helen to ponder the meaning of media embargoes. 1:13:11: Yes, One Piece and Elmo is somehow a thing. No, not a lie, this crossover really happened thanks to Netflix; Writer Shirow Shiratori announced that his and illustrator Kippu’s No-Rin light novel series will return from its decade-long hiatus with its 14th and final volume on June 13; Hiromu Shinozuka topped it though, as Mirmo de Pon! New is the first entry in the Mirmo Zibang! in 21 years. The return of works after so long…never say final applies for these works! 1:15:35: And finally, somehow, some way, the live-action adaptation news of manga/anime franchise does not stop…and Samurai Champloo is the next one picked. Looking forward to it coming out in 2030! If there’s anything you’d like to share, please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter (@TheOASG) or comment below with your thoughts! No one makes comics like Dave Chisholm, and we don't allow him to make one without first making a stop at the podcast. His latest, Is Ted OK?, reveals an artist pushing himself to his very limit, built on an incredible run of 2025 books, our favorite Limited Series from last year, Spectrum, and the gnarly haunted horror, Plague House. Not to forget his work on High Strangeness, which is still in process. Chisholm learns something about himself and the medium every time he steps up to his drawing board, allowing the next project to always top the last. Is Ted OK? The title answers itself, but certainly not in the way you expect. Chisholm imagines a dystopian world, where Ted drones away as a graphic designer for a megacorporation owned by the world's first trillionaire. He's disconnected from those around him, friendly only with a cat, and plagued by horrendous night terrors. He's also being watched 24/7 by Sarah, another employee tasked with monitoring his suicidal and homicidal tendencies. She's concerned, she wants to help, and her first attempt to do so makes Is Ted Ok?'s first issue climax. This week, we welcome Dave Chisholm back on the podcast. We spent six months with him last year on the show, meticulously dissecting Spectrum with his collaborator Rick Quinn. It's fun to catch up. We discuss how his past work brought him to Is Ted OK? We talk about allowing comics to be comics and making sure that every panel carries story. In fact, we discuss how every element of a comic is a chance to carry story. FOC (Final Order Cutoff) for Is Ted OK? #1 is Monday, February 2nd. The comic will eventually be available at comic shops on February 25th, thanks to Mad Cave Studios. Make sure you get your order in, and follow Dave Chisholm on Instagram and BlueSky. What if you could go back and do it all over again? That's the premise of Olivia Cuartero-Briggs' new comic, “The College Try,” out in February 2026 through Maverick, an imprint of Mad Cave Studios. Rachel, a desperately single Chicago comedian attends her 20-year college reunion in a disastrous attempt to win back the one who got away. But, in a magical twist of fate, she is sent back to 2003 - her sophomore year of college - for one last chance to fix it all. Olivia, in her third appearance on the show, talks about the inspiration for the story and how her own college experiences played a role. We examine the protagonist Rachel del Rio, her flaws and how Olivia prefers to work with less-than-perfect characters. The book takes place in 2003, and Olivia and Max dive into that era and how it felt to relive it through the pages of “The College Try.” Returning artist Roberta Ingranata brings the story to visual life and it's her second book with Olivia, the first being “Jill and the Killers.” Olivia shares her working relationship with Roberta and what it was Ike to team up once again.

In this episode of The Comic Source, Jace welcomes back fan-favorite writer Mark Russell to discuss his new Ahoy Comics one-shot, Thanksgiving. Known for weaving biting social commentary into relatable everyday scenarios, Russell explores the uneasy dynamics of family gatherings and how shared traditions can expose deep divides beneath the surface. The pair delve into the book's darkly humorous premise—a seemingly ordinary holiday dinner that spirals into moral chaos when one family member is revealed to be a killer—while unpacking the story's sharp reflections on modern America, empathy, and apathy. Jace and Mark also touch on Russell's collaboration with artist Alain Mauricet, whose grounded visuals and warm tones heighten both the satire and humanity of the tale. Before wrapping up, Mark teases his upcoming projects at Mad Cave Studios, including Racer X, Vanishing Point, and TerrorBytes, offering more of the thought-provoking storytelling that has made him one of comics' most distinctive voices.

Writer, Professor, and Futurist Mark Sable joins Jimmy on the podcast to talk about BOXED. BOXED is a grounded sci-fi thriller about a rogue A.I. The story was created by Mark and artist Jeremy Haun and originally published by Comixology Originals. Mad Cave Studios will be publishing the print edition with new bonus content on September 9th. Mark talks about the real life circumstances that led to his comic Unthinkable, his work as a futurist, his influences for writing BOXED, what fascinates/worries him most about A.I., plus some talk about D&D and Chaotic Neutral. BOXED From the Publisher: Since the first superintelligent A.I. went rogue and massacred the world's top computer scientists, it has been government agent Frank Savage's job to contain—or “box”—sentient artificial intelligence before they can become a threat to humanity. When Hippocrates, the Center for Disease Control's A.I., exceeds its programming and locks down hundreds of thousands of people, Frank is forced to turn to Pandora— an A.I. he onced boxed—to contain it. The problem? Pandora is a “honeypot” A.I. designed to seduce and destroy its targets… and Frank's ex-girlfriend. With the fate of humanity on the line, can Frank trust Pandora, or will their shared past threaten the entire mission? Boxed is a grounded Blade Runner-meets-Silence of the Lambs sci-fi thriller by Mark Sable (Miskatonic, Graveyard of Empires) and Jeremy Haun (The Beauty, The Realm). Brought to you in print for the first time by Mad Cave Studios, with brand-new bonus content! Originally released digitally by Comixology Originals. After half a year, our Spectrum Book Club podcast series with collaborators Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm finds its ending. It's bittersweet but equally exhilarating. The sixth issue in the Mad Cave Studios series lands the thesis, connecting every reader to every creator and revealing their powers in the process. You. Yeah, you. You're probably a maker, whether or not you're actively aware of your creations, and your tiny results forever bind you to those who came before, those who surround you today, and those who will come after you. Through Spectrum 6, Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm plot a course through human history, and damn, we're super excited to follow. Our final Spectrum Book Club session explores endings, forces our interpretations upon Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, and sits in their squirmy silence as they let us hang with our unconfirmed story solutions. These episodes are a unique set within the Comic Book Couples Counseling catalog, and we're thrilled with those who have followed along from November 2024 to nearly June 2025. Even more exciting are those ears that will discover these conversations months and years from now. All six Spectrum issues are currently available from Mad Cave Studios, and the trade paperback release is scheduled for July 15th. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. And follow Rick Quinn on his Website, Bluesky, and Instagram. First issues are hard. Last issues are hard. Second-to-last issues are hard. Maybe...all issues are hard? Book Club is back in session with creators Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, discussing Spectrum #5, the penultimate issue in their brilliant Mad Cave Studios series. With the end just around the corner (the final issue arrives in shops on May 21st, as does our final Book Club episode with Quinn and Chisholm, so mark your calendars), Spectrum #5 must elevate and explode a bunch of grandiose ideas about art that the comic has so far been teasing or suggesting. Spectrum #5 is a BIG comic following two central characters while traversing multiple timelines and encountering alternate-dimension stand-ins for iconic cultural figures and places from our world. Quinn and Chisholm might not say it, but we will: PBGBs is CBGBs, and Gloria Bell is Patti Smith. Half the pleasure of reading Spectrum is tracking their sci-fi alternatives of real-world legends, which recalls similar joys had when devouring Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. However, as Spectrum #5 ramps toward its fiery conclusion next month, the fervor with which Quinn and Chisholm explore vital artistry is the ultimate appeal. Why do humans sing? Why do they paint? Why do they tell stories to one another? During a moment when artistic expression is recklessly dismissed or downright eradicated, Spectrum #5 shows its readers how they're constantly engaged with creative expression and why only the most vile and pathetic people are detached from it. Last month's Spectrum Book Club was extremely process-heavy in its conversation. Now, for the penultimate issue, it's time to dig into the thematic weeds, have a serious chat about human connection, and worry not about labels of pretension. We're all friends here. Spectrum 1 - 5 are currently available from Mad Cave Studios, and the final issue will arrive in shops on April 21st. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. And follow Rick Quinn on his Website, Bluesky, and Instagram.
