After half a year, our Spectrum Book Club podcast series with collaborators Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm finds its ending. It's bittersweet but equally exhilarating. The sixth issue in the Mad Cave Studios series lands the thesis, connecting every reader to every creator and revealing their powers in the process. You. Yeah, you. You're probably a maker, whether or not you're actively aware of your creations, and your tiny results forever bind you to those who came before, those who surround you today, and those who will come after you. Through Spectrum 6, Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm plot a course through human history, and damn, we're super excited to follow. Our final Spectrum Book Club session explores endings, forces our interpretations upon Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, and sits in their squirmy silence as they let us hang with our unconfirmed story solutions. These episodes are a unique set within the Comic Book Couples Counseling catalog, and we're thrilled with those who have followed along from November 2024 to nearly June 2025. Even more exciting are those ears that will discover these conversations months and years from now. All six Spectrum issues are currently available from Mad Cave Studios, and the trade paperback release is scheduled for July 15th. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. And follow Rick Quinn on his Website, Bluesky, and Instagram. Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

First issues are hard. Last issues are hard. Second-to-last issues are hard. Maybe...all issues are hard? Book Club is back in session with creators Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, discussing Spectrum #5, the penultimate issue in their brilliant Mad Cave Studios series. With the end just around the corner (the final issue arrives in shops on May 21st, as does our final Book Club episode with Quinn and Chisholm, so mark your calendars), Spectrum #5 must elevate and explode a bunch of grandiose ideas about art that the comic has so far been teasing or suggesting. Spectrum #5 is a BIG comic following two central characters while traversing multiple timelines and encountering alternate-dimension stand-ins for iconic cultural figures and places from our world. Quinn and Chisholm might not say it, but we will: PBGBs is CBGBs, and Gloria Bell is Patti Smith. Half the pleasure of reading Spectrum is tracking their sci-fi alternatives of real-world legends, which recalls similar joys had when devouring Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. However, as Spectrum #5 ramps toward its fiery conclusion next month, the fervor with which Quinn and Chisholm explore vital artistry is the ultimate appeal. Why do humans sing? Why do they paint? Why do they tell stories to one another? During a moment when artistic expression is recklessly dismissed or downright eradicated, Spectrum #5 shows its readers how they're constantly engaged with creative expression and why only the most vile and pathetic people are detached from it. Last month's Spectrum Book Club was extremely process-heavy in its conversation. Now, for the penultimate issue, it's time to dig into the thematic weeds, have a serious chat about human connection, and worry not about labels of pretension. We're all friends here. Spectrum 1 - 5 are currently available from Mad Cave Studios, and the final issue will arrive in shops on April 21st. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. And follow Rick Quinn on his Website, Bluesky, and Instagram. Welcome to the twenty-fifth episode of Best Issue Ever! This week we're talking to Phillip Sevy, who does the art for the Astonishing X-Men and has worked on a lot of the Infinity Comics for Marvel Unlimited. You can also check out their new book, Don't Forget Your Briefcase, available through the great Mad Cave Studios. Phillip has brought us Midnight Nation #4, which was written by J. Michael Strazynski, with art by Gary Frank, inks by Jonathan Sibal and Jason Gorder, colors by Matt Milla, and letters by Robin Spehar and Dennis Heisler. This podcast is recorded in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is edited by Sara Century. The theme music is provided by Earth Control Pill, whose work is on Bandcamp. There are not many opportunities like this one. Every month, we devour the latest Spectrum comic and then jump on the phone with creators Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm. It's an intimate, super nerdy book club, and you're all invited. But you gotta bring your own wine. With issue four, we're more than halfway through the series, but we're just getting started regarding a thorough excavation into their creative process. Spectrum #4 is the most dense chapter in the series so far. Multiple threads weave the narrative, and several of those introduce new concepts and characters. We travel to "The Twilight of the Gods," witnessing a massive mythology dump while our heroes Melody and Ada traverse time through song. We witness the beginning of everything and must prepare for its end. This week's podcast starts with Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm taking ownership of the Book Club, wrestling the reins from us, and guiding us to the discussion topics they want to tackle. We discuss how the series has swerved unexpectedly, resulting in radical issues like Spectrum #4. We got tangents and anecdotes, wild theories, and sidequests. But before all that, we must discuss our recent WonderCon excursion, offering a little recap on dollar bins and panels. The Anaheim convention rests in the shadow of Disneyland, offering a unique vibe from other comic cons. It was Lisa's first time. Will she return? Spectrum 1 - 4 are currently available from Mad Cave Studios, and the fifth issue will arrive in shops on April 23rd. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. And follow Rick Quinn on his Website, Bluesky, and Instagram. You wake in a hospital bed. Your hand feels heavy, there's a ringing pain in your head. Machine parts have replaced what could not be repaired with flesh. Did the doctors save you, or strip you of your humanity? This is the question facing Adam in Futility Shapes, a one-shot comic live on Kickstarter now! Created by Edward Kane and Dave Fowler. Futility Shapes is a weird blend of The Terminator, The Machinist, and Mass Effect. What shapes you? Visit EdwardKane.net. We're also sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Get a print subscription at your door every week - and the first issue is free! Or subscribe digitally, get free back issues, and download DRM-free copies of each issue for just $9 a month. Paul Tobin and PJ Holden Interview - Dark Pyramid

Horror is one of my favorite genres and I've often heard horror creators on the show talk about avoiding a modern setting in their work. How do you deal with technology, cell phones, and social media? It's way easier to just drop it in the nostalgia of the 80s before much of that happened and we've seen an explosion of popular IPs set in the era of Pac Man and MTV, but what if you had a horror story with a social media influencer as the protagonist putting their experience front and center in front of a live worldwide audience? That's the hook of the new five issue mini-series Dark Pyramid from Mad Cave Studios and I'm lucky enough to have co-creators Eisner Winning comics writer Paul Tobin and his extraordinary artist accomplice PJ Holden to tell us all about it on today's episode. Truthfully, prior to my interest in this book, I didn't know all that much about the Dark Pyramid in Alaska. Conspiracy theorist I am not, but it does make for an interesting backdrop to this folk horror take in rural Alaska. We get into how the myth inspired some of the book's elements, how using a protagonist who is documenting their life live works in a horror story, and PJ tells us all about his experience starting improv. Dark Pyramid hits shelves on March 12th. Paul's website: https://www.paultobin.net PJ's website: https://www.pauljholden.com From the publisher Hooky Hidalgo, adventurist and popular live streamer, has gone missing while climbing Mt. Denali in Alaska! When his girlfriend, Becca, arrives at the base of the mountain to retrace his steps, she soon discovers something beyond the dreamy and impressive landscape. There's a conspiracy deep within the heart of Denali itself—a dark pyramid, silent, waiting. Becca—and the scores of Hooky fans determined to either find him or find some fun—will face death, avalanches….and monsters to find the truth. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. We try not to gatekeep. We try to resist nostalgia, but on some days, we feel the purest expression possible in comics can only occur through monthly serialization. Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm return to the podcast for the third month, discussing Spectrum #3, the latest entry in their magical, sci-fi tour through an alternate musical history. As you'll hear Rick Quinn say at some point in our conversation, Spectrum #3 is not their "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Hey Jude." It's twenty-two pages; it's their three-minute pop song, and nothing is more simplistically significant than a three-minute pop song. Lives are often altered within those beautiful constraints. We're halfway through the Mad Cave Studios series and our monthly Book Club discussion of it. Feel free to jump on board here, but also, catching up won't take you long. Find the links to those conversations below. Spectrum #3 introduces more characters and artistic mediums for our heroes and readers to consider. Last month, we explored how fine art interacts with music, and now, through the character of Walton Naves, we look at photography's relationship to sound. What separates the "click" from the picture triggered by it? As always, Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm are more than willing to travel deep with us into Spectrum. This time, they're packing their own notes! We discuss how the third issue still reveals their discovery of the material and how next month's comic will show them confidently accepting its mission. Between the pages, lives were literally born, and perspectives radically transformed. Can you find the page created between childlessness and fatherhood? Just look for signs of exhaustion and obsessive detail. Spectrum 1 - 3 are currently available from Mad Cave Studios, and the fourth issue will arrive in shops on March 19th. Today I finally get to speak about a book from Mad Cave Comics that I've obsessed over for the past 2 months as I sit with Rick Quinn & Dave Chisholm and their Cosmic Musical Supernatural (wait, that's too many adjectives) tale of 2 characters one in each issue: Melody Parker and Ada Latimer. Melody is conflicted by loss living on the streets of Seattle during the WTO Protests with nothing but her Sony Walkman when her reality starts to bend and a world between her world starts to appear. Clueless by what she is seeing, we then get transported to a time of Jazz and early Rock n Roll. We come to find the Melody was at one point a prodigy in music, but the loss of her mother made her lose her way. A mysterious character named Echo seems to know that Melody holds the solution to a secret war within the world.Issue 2 brings us Ada Latimer, a record store owner who similarly is also dealt with the disappearance of her Father. A former Musician, who after his first album vanished when she was a child. She describe her fathers music as eclectic and maybe before its time. Ada inherited his record collection and with every chord played she is taken to a place where she is closer to him. Her Boyfriend Theo, a strange character persona himself makes her life seem normal. Until Echo presents herself to take Ada in the same manner as she did Melody.A thriller nonetheless, but embolden in those who love music. Episode #677 features the return of two great comics creators—PJ Holden and Paul Tobin, who are bringing us Dark Pyramid from Mad Cave Studios. Both creators are returning to the podcast, and they are working together to bring a gripping new series of ancient conspiracies, monstrous horrors, and the ultimate fight for truth. Their electrifying five-issue mini-series will begin in February, and it is described this way: “Hooky Hidalgo, adventurist and popular live streamer, has gone missing while climbing Mt. Becca—and the scores of Hooky fans determined to either find him or find some fun—will face death, avalanches…. and monsters to find the truth.” We talk about how this book came to be, who the characters are, and what we can expect from both Paul and PJ in the coming months! They're back! Writer Rick Quinn and artist Dave Chisholm return to the podcast to discuss Spectrum #2, the second issue in their science fiction tour through an alternate musical history. As the plot reveals itself, adding new elements and several more splash pages, we dig deeper into its characters, emotions, and references. Adding this conversation atop our previous one about the first issue, we're building something grand - a comic book dissection as we've never done before - so we might as well officially make it a Book Club and invite everyone listening to join in on the comics summit. Have you read Spectrum #1? Have you read Spectrum #2? Do you have any thoughts? Do you have questions? We want to hear them! CLICK HERE and drop them into the comments. Next month, when we return to the podcast with Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, we'll work our way through them on the show. This is your chance to shape the conversation and connect with the big ideas about art these creators are exploring. Spectrum #2 introduces Ada Latimer, the retail warrior trying to keep her Unpopular Pop record store afloat. Within the comic's first few moments, she meets the reality-bending Melody from issue one and has a cosmic encounter that would curl Jack Kirby's toes. A quest is discovered, one that will slam Ada and Melody together as they search for a mythical music producer while battling a creature of song called Echo. Now, more than ever, community offers relief. We must find our people and love and fight by their side. For us, we feel the most connected when we're engaged with art, whether it takes the form of music, movies, or comic books. Creating a book club, determined to cover this series for the next five or so months, is an act of hope and optimism. And so is joining one. Spectrum #2 is now available from Mad Cave Studios, wherever rad comics are sold. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. On today's show I have returning guest and recent Russ Manning Award Winner Oliver Bly sitting down to talk about the second volume of his original graphic novel series The Mushroom Knight from Mad Cave Studios. We a shared love of mycology so I have always adored this project and we go deep into exploring the themes of ecology and spirituality and how they mesh throughout the books. Oliver shares insights into his creative process, the significance of character designs, and how the overarching message centers around universal biological connectivity and highlighting the dangers of invasive species in our ecosystems. It's really interesting to hear his visual approach to using body language to act with a character who's mouth doesn't move (does he really even have a mouth?) We also get into the role of enlisting a sensitivity reader on the project. If you enjoyed this chat, you can click the link here to go back and catch up our first conversation about Volume 1. The Mushroom Knight Volume 2 From the publisher An adolescent girl named Lem searches the deep dark woods for her missing dog, entangling her destiny with a chivalrous mushroom faerie named Gowlitrot on a mystical quest to protect the biome from catastrophic ruin. As their friendship develops, Gowlitrot pledges to aid Lem in a quest to discover the fate of her missing dog, but as the search progresses, they uncover perilous betrayals that challenge the foundation of each of their worlds— both inner and outer. The natural world may never appear the same again. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. We got two simple tiers, $1 and $3. I don't normally cover a project twice but this one is pretty special as it extends beyond the medium of comics. Don't worry, it was a comic first. We're revisiting the Mad Cave Studios project The Last Wardens with writers Amit Tishler and Elliot Sperl. They have been busy expanding the scope of their IP and developing a TTRPG as well as an audio drama based upon the world created in the comic. Pretty amazing right? We touch on the principle theme of failure which drives the characters in the story, especially the main protagonist Dani, and how an open mind towards collaboration has opened doors to new possibilities for their world. Amit discusses his philosophy with embracing failure as a learning tooland how it can be applied to all creative endeavors. And, we carve out some time to discuss one of my favorite topics, the built in challenges navigating the direct market environment and how implementing innovative strategies can help to build a multimedia franchise that sustains an IP. Make sure to sign up for Amit's newsletter MINDSPLATTER, and definitely check out his blog. Here's the link for the pufferfish analogy we discuss in the show. Download the digital basic set of the game here. This 42-page digital basic set includes a fully playable game, character creation essentials, and (of course) over 40 gore-drenched Grievous Wounds.  The Last Wardens trade paperback will be released on March 12th With an alcoholic father and a hole in her wallet, Danielle Pryer's life in the rustic town of Bleakwood goes from bad to worse when her long-lost brother, Bruce, returns from the Vietnam War. While Bruce is being plagued by a mysterious and monstrous mutation, he is also being hunted by an incompetent team of paranormal misfits, which leads to Bleakwood quickly becoming ground zero of a supernatural battle that forces Danielle to choose between everything she holds dear and the fate of the world as a whole. Spectrum, the new Mad Cave Studios series from creators Dave Chisholm and Rick Quinn, is an astonishing sci-fi saga that begins inside the Seattle WTO protests of 1999 and propels its characters into a realm where music grants flight. The central character, Melody, can't quite discern what's real and what's not - a sensation you may very well be familiar with at this moment - seeing impossible beings floating amongst the crowds. Powers from within and without compel her on a journey that operates as the best geeky musical Where's Waldo for the reader who is willing. Y'all ready for the MTV version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Y'all remember MTV? We're already so obsessed with Spectrum that we've committed to a series of six podcast episodes, one for each new issue. Thankfully, Dave Chisholm and Rick Quinn are also up for this pop culture plunge. They join us for an excavation of sound and a discussion on the song's importance in our daily lives and how they miraculously transplanted one artistic expression into another. Spectrum is waiting for your eyes. You merely need to put them upon it and join this book's inevitable cult following. Make sure to alert your comic shop of its existence. Slap it in your pullbox. Be part of this book's success, as it's unlike anything else on the stands. Here's your chance to be the snooty person in the shop, claiming your crown as one of Spectrum's first converted followers. The first issue arrives on 11/20, and the second drops on 1/8/2025. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. And follow Rick Quin on his Wesbiste and Instagram. Other Relevant Links: The Trevor Project or call 1-866-488-7386 for gender-affirming and queer-friendly support.
