Is it only April? We hope everyone has been doing well and hanging in there. Hopefully today's episode will help up lift some spirits because we've got a fun one with 1995's Die Hard With a Vengeance. Not only was Jordan surprised to learn this is actually the third film in the series, but also that it could have also co-starred Laurence Fishburne instead of Sam Jackson.  It also lets us ask a lot of important questions like who was the first Black person to save the world on film and what if Simon Gruber asked questions only about Black history?  Our book club is starting up soon! Coming up on Sunday April 27th we'll be discussing Eve Ewing's Original Sin which explores the intentional failures of America's education system when it comes to Black and Indigenous children specifically. We'll be talk about it on our IG (@whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod) and on our discord so be sure to join us on both.  We'll be back in two weeks with Academy award winner Adrian Brody in the very confusing Chinese blockbuster, Dragon Gate.

Oscar season might be over but that doesn't mean we still can't cover some Oscar bait. 2009's The Soloist that has all the makings of an awards season darling: two stars at the height of their power with Robert Downey Jr. an Jamie Foxx, an award winning director and screen writer and a sappy true story. And yet, it feels like a parody.  We discuss how cruelly this movie treats the unhoused community it seemingly wants to uplift, Jamie's crazy hairline and outfits, and how movies like this seek to win awards through Black pain.  Announcement: We are finally starting out book club this April! Our first book will be Eve Ewing's Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism. We will be livestreaming our discussion on IG (@whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod) on April 27th so stay tuned and we hope to see you then!

What is the purpose of schools? Most people would say to teach children to meet their potential and to prepare them for the world. But in her new book “Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism,” Chicago author and sociologist Eve Ewing presents readers with an exhaustively researched history of how U.S. schools have been a place where separation and inequality have been enshrined by design. Comix is a distinct art form—sequential art—that expresses ideas with multiple images, most often combined with text. It's a hybrid (think co-mix) and, importantly, it's a medium not a genre—don't confuse the two in the presence of a comix creator or you might get your head bit off (for a real-life dramatization, see the opening of To Teach: the journey in comics). Comics aren't just for kids anymore, and the medium has been creatively deployed to communicate non-comedic content—see Maus or Persepolis or Fun Home. They've taken over the world in this golden comix age, and you can find them everywhere—classrooms, special sections in bookstores and libraries, and, yes, still hidden in that secret drawer in the closet—and still the medium retains a sense of its insurgent origins. The word “comix” (or “comics”) is a “non-count noun” like “politics” or “economics” referring to the medium itself. We're joined by two old friends in conversation about comix and the world—Eve Ewing, poet, playwright, scholar, teacher, author of the Ironheart series for Marvel comics, and the first Black female author of the Black Panther series; and Ryan Alexander-Tanner (www.ohyesverynice.com), illustrator/comics artist and educator, co-author of To Teach: the journey in comics, and author and artist of Muhammad Ali: The Greatest Comics Biography of All Time Volume One: Cassius Clay.

We traveled to Women and Children First, Seminary Coop, The Wooden Shoe in Philadelphia, Book and Puppet in Easton, PA, Riff Raff in Providence, Firestorm in Asheville, NC, Red Emma's in Baltimore, Busboys and Poets in DC, the PIT (Property is Theft!!) in Brooklyn, and more. I read at public libraries, coffee shops, and Movement venues like Haymarket House, Hasta Muerte, and The James Connelly Social Club. A couple of the events were taped, one at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY where I was in conversation with the legendary thinker and activist Barbara Smith, co-author of the Combahee River Collective statement, and one at La Pena in Oakland where I was in conversation with Cat Brooks, organizer, activist, and KPFA radio host---Under the Tree will drop those spicy conversations in the future. I was honored and often awed to be in conversation with several other powerful comrades and dazzling friends: Lisa Lee, Danaka Katovich, Alice Kim, Damon Williams, Jacqui Lyden, Daniel Kisslinger, Martha Biondi, Adam Bush, James Michael MacDonald, Jeff Jones, Martha Swan, and more.

Kaitlin shares her recent experience of a fast and deep dive into community activism to protect her children's public elementary school, Sutro Elementary, from potential closure. Only weeks ago, Sutro was among 13 schools in the San Francisco Unified School District identified for possible closure due to budget constraints. Kaitlin helped lead a community-wide campaign to keep Sutro open, which culminated in a 600-person protest, a town hall with the district superintendent, and ultimately, a halt to the closure process. This experience led Kaitlin to reflect on the essential role of Public schools as community pillars that provide stability and belonging, especially for low-income, immigrant populations like the students and families at Sutro Elementary—and broader, nationwide implications of school closures. Diamond Sharp's Super Sad Black Girl is a love letter to her hometown of Chicago, where the speaker finds solace and community with her literary idols in hopes of answering the question: What does it look like when Black women are free?Lorraine Hansberry and Gwendolyn Brooks appear throughout these poems, counseling the speaker as she navigates her own depression and exploratory questions about the “Other Side,” as do Sandra Bland, Rekia Boyd, and other Black women who have been murdered by police. Sharp's poetry is self-assured, playful, and imaginative, reminiscent of Langston Hughes with its precision and brevity. The book explores purgatorial, in-between spaces that the speaker occupies as she struggles to find a place and time where she can live safely and freely. With her skillful use of repetition, particularly in her series of concrete poems, lines and voices echo across the book so the reader, too, feels suspended within Sharp's lyric moments. Super Sad Black Girl is a compassionate and ethereal depiction of mental illness from a promising and powerful poet.Join us for this livestream of the in-person book launch event for Super Sad Black Girl with Diamond Sharp, Eve Ewing, Raych Jackson and Jamila Woods. -------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Diamond Sharp is a poet and essayist from Chicago. Super Sad Black Girl is her debut collection of poems. Dr. Eve L. Ewing is a sociologist of education and a writer from Chicago. She is the award-winning author of four books: the poetry collections Electric Arches and 1919, the nonfiction work Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago's South Side, and most recently a novel for young readers, Maya and the Robot. She is the co-author (with Nate Marshall) of the play No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks. Rachel “Raych” Jackson is a writer, educator and performer. Her poems have gained over 2 million views on YouTube. She is the 2017 NUPIC Champion and a 2017 Pink Door fellow. Jackson recently voiced 'DJ Raych' in the Jackbox game, Mad Verse City. She voices Tiffany in Battu, an upcoming animation recently picked up by Cartoon Network. Her latest play, “Emotions & Bots”, premiered at the Woerdz Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland. Jamila Woods is a Chicago-bred singer/songwriter and award-winning poet whose inspirations include Gwendolyn Brooks and Toni Morrison. Following the 2016 release of her debut album HEAVN, Woods received critical acclaim for her singular sound that is both rooted in soul and wholly modern. Her 2019 sophomore release LEGACY! LEGACY! featured 12 tracks named after writers, thinkers, and visual artists who have influenced her life and work. I don't need to fight (but I can) to prove I'm right (which I am)--I don't need to be forgiven (damn right, girl)! In the teenage wasteland of Chicago (and occasionally Cambridge, Mass.), RiRi Williams bears the burden of protecting absolutely everyone. Petty criminals, gang violence, corrupt officials, supervillains, and mysterious cabals, take your pick--she will protect YOU, yes you, from them, and also some of them from each other. And she's only 15 years old. We discuss RiRi's work-life balance, the higher standard of professional expectation for POC, vigilanteism (again), and the different approaches of Iron Man and Ironheart, amongst other topics. In our humble contribution to Black History Month, join us in appreciating  one of Marvel's first ongoing series written by a black woman, the wonderful Eve Ewing.Next week, we will be commencing our season proper with JLA: Trial By Fire (vol. 1, #84-89) to highlight GREEN character J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter. How do questions of race, justice, and equality transcend national borders? How is the past tied to the present? How do ideas that were once labelled ‘radical' become mainstream? In light of the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement for police reform and racial equality, I'm doing another special episode this week, featuring Dr. Esmorie Miller (@esmoriem), a Lecturer in Criminology at London South Bank University.Esmorie has been looking at issues of race, justice, and policing for over 15 years, with a focus on young people. She looks at institutional policies around urban youth gangs; historical narratives on youth justice reform; policing surveillance in schools; and the role of race and gender in punishment. She has a forthcoming book on the role of race in youth justice, with a focus on the UK and Canada, so I wanted to speak with her partly about how and why BLM extends beyond the US borders. But I also wanted to hear from Esmorie about how she, and other researchers in her field, have been working for years to change the narrative on racialised youth. As Esmorie says, the historical discourse around young people of color was long centered around an assumed deviance or reluctance, and that narrative has carried through to today. As she puts it, ‘the present is still tethered to the past.' But by engaging with that history and understanding it, we might be able to challenge and change that narrative. When Esmorie first started this work, she was told by supervisors that her research was sound, but too ‘radical.' Now that the idea of systemic racism has become more mainstream, I wanted to hear from Esmorie on how and why understandings and norms shift, and how she sees this present moment. Our conversation gets slightly academic at times, but there's a lot of great stuff here, and I hope you learn as much as I did.Resources:Policing Black Lives, by Robyn MaynardGhosts in the Schoolyard, bye Eve Ewing
