I'm calling it right now. Lesbian Space Princess is the film of the year. I saw it in a sold out auditorium at the beautiful art deco Piccadilly cinema in Adelaide with an Adelaide Film Festival audience that lapped up every laugh, every tear, and every splash of neon bright queer celebration on screen. Lesbian Space Princess is the animated feature debut of filmmakers Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbs, a collaborative force to be reckoned with, set to change the Australian film industry one bubblegum flavoured cel at a time. The film follows Saira (voiced brilliantly by the superb Shabana Azeez), the titular lesbian space princess who finds herself having to leave her sheltered planet in the wide galaxy to save her punk rock ex-girlfriend Kiki (Bernie Van Tiel) after she is kidnapped by the Straight White Maliens (voiced by the Aunty Donna crew). Saira pilots a ship (voiced with joyous deadpan delivery by Richard Roxburgh, completing his one-two punch of career best performances alongside his turn in The Correspondent), encountering the delightful Willow (a scene stealing Gemma Chua-Tran), and the two head off in the galaxy to save Kiki. That plot synopsis barely scratches the surface of what is going on within one of the sharpest, funniest, queerest films to be produced in Australia. There is the Australian film industry before Lesbian Space Princess, and there is the Australian film industry after Lesbian Space Princess, and I can't wait to see what work this film inspires people to create. I'm still giddy from the ten minute standing ovation that took place on the opening night. You know us Aussies, we're not partial to standing ovations, let alone standing for anything (unless it's a queue), so to know we stood, clapped, cheered, and heaped deserving praise on this debut film is a strong enough statement as it is. That energy I'm putting forward lingers in the following interview with Leela, Emma, and Shabana (who joined us after a day of shooting her HBO series The Pitt, and after her film Birdeater took home Best Indie Film at the AACTAs). In this discussion, we talk about the origins of Lesbian Space Princess, what it means to create a narrative that everyone can relate to, the varied emotionality of the film, and a lot more. We close the chat with Emma telling us the impact of the film on relationships. This interview was recorded ahead of Lesbian Space Princess' world premiere at the Berlinale Film Festival where it is in competition for the Panorama Audience Award and the Teddy Award for LGBTQIA+ films. The version screened at the Adelaide Film Festival was a work in progress print. Lesbian Space Princess was awarded the full $10,000 from the Queer Screen Completion Fund. The Completion Fund recipients are determined by an independent jury. The following chat is one of the first pieces (of many) that the Curb will be putting up this year as we celebrate the year of Lesbian Space Princess. Get excited folks, your new favourite film is not far away.If you want to find out more about the work we do on The Curb, then head over to TheCurb.com.au. First off, Happy Easter to anyone celebrating this joyous holiday. Second, I hate doing Trigger Warnings, but there is some adult language in this podcast episode but today. I wanted to go over the whole issue about anime elitists and how condescending people are and how anime is *NOT* any issues that these SJWs on social media play it out to be. They only care about cancelling anything they don't like or anything they don't agree with since it goes against their political narrative. Seriously, people should have a reason to enjoy something even if it doesn't push political agendas, gender identity, LGBT+ representation, etc. But all in all this is a way for me and my friends to let off some steam and give people a chance to shine.

I don't even know what to say about this episode of Voyager. We're still talking about the Kazon? How many of them even are there? Are they the Starbucks of alien villains in space? Why do you need a regular villain alien race anyway? Why is that useful? I think Voyager should just go spend its time off an a quiet part of the quadrant, doing its own thing, making its own way, separate from the Federation and Starfleet. Maybe they could find a nice nebula chill in and cook beans over a fire. That sounds like a nice life. A braggable life. The kind of simple life that a Space Princess would enjoy, lumpy or otherwise. Game School talks with James Desboroug about his game Machinations of the Space Princess. MotSP is an space game running on a version of old school D&D that allows you to play in a world reminiscent of Heavy Metal, Galaxina, and Flash Gordon. It's as stylistic, sexy, and as fun as you'd imagine. The game book is cool and play is wild and free. James runs Satine through an encounter on a backward planet to recover a bounty worth his weight in credits. Will she outwit the other bounty hunters and survive the encounter or will she become one of their captors as well? You’ll have to listen to find out

I think it’s fair to say James Desborough is one of the most controversial and outspoken writers out there. His views on theism, sexism and politics have gained him a fair number of detractors who are just as outspoken as he is. Sometimes more. What there is no doubt either, is that he is a talented writer and has some terrific quality products in his portfolio. Some people will dismiss this episode of the podcast simply because of the name associated with it. Some people will decide that James doesn’t have anything to say that anyone would want to hear. Those people will miss out on James’ Machinations of the Space Princess and other work he’s put his finger into. And will miss on James’ experiences of dealing with depression and still have a productive career. Shame, because if you can put your differences aside, James is well worth listening to.
