The history of humans arguing about climate change is often just people throwing large numbers at each other. So it's time for an episode about how we think about numbers, why our brains are prone to falling for dodgy sums dressed up as facts, and how we can all learn to maths up a bit.  Joining me on this episode is Rob Eastaway - maths author, cricket nerd, and all round nice bloke. You might have heard him on shows like BBC's More or Less, or read his books like Maths on the Back of an Envelope. He's passionate about helping everyone young and old more conquer their fear of maths and to take back a bit of control over those that would use numbers to beguile or bewitch us. Loads of people say they have a fear of numbers. Many of us struggle with probabilities, percentages or simply confidence in adding up in our heads. On Baptism Sunday at Jubilee Church Wirral, when seven of our family members were baptised by immersion, in ‘What God has done in you’, Rick Robertson explores the transformation that occurs when someone becomes a Christian. Rick highlights a passage from Ephesians 2:4-6, explaining how God's love and mercy bring believers from a state of being “dead” in their sins to being “alive” with Christ. He uses a series of analogies to explain these theological concepts: The Sunlit Room: He compares coming to God to light entering a dusty room. Just as sunlight reveals hidden dust and cobwebs, God's light reveals the “mess” in our lives and our need for Him. The Envelope of Sin: He uses an envelope to represent sin and brokenness that blocks a person's relationship with God. He explains that Jesus, who lived a perfect life, took that “envelope” of sin upon Himself through His death on the cross, restoring the believer's relationship with God as a child to a father. Wellllll...   Don't blame we - holidays came quick this year and nothing's getting done beyond Christmas trees and gifts for Mom.  There's a high-q Garage Hour for you right here, though (found time between wrapping and trimming), with a sleigh load of gearhead goodness.  Subaru's trying to extra-distract you while driving by piping ads through the silly screen in the dash, Jaguar's trying to save itself from the 95% fail of their woketarded rainbow-sprocket rebrand by firing the guy who green-lighted it, the Trump administration is trying to save Americans from terrible and unsafe cars by loosening C.A.F.E. standards, the U.S.P.S. is finally bailing on its electric-breadbox delivery van experiment, and technology is still trying to kill us with spy glasses and artificial stupidity.  Also, we've got good cats versus bad kitties, the S.D.P.D. versus the C.H.P., and Thanksgiving versus your plumber. We've got the rock, too - not just more surf guitar and So-Cal tunes, but Fun Lovin' Criminals, Hum, Five-Horse Johnson, Fishbone, Alice In Chains and an Excellent Weirdo R.I.P. for Booker "T" & the MGs guitarman and American rock guitar genius Steve Cropper.

On New Year's Day 2020, Adam Tendler unexpectedly received his father's final gift: a wad of cash stuffed into a manila envelope handed over in the parking lot of a Denny's restaurant in West Lebanon, NH. The strangely furtive exchange launched a musical journey.Tendler, a renowned concert pianist who grew up in Barre decided to use his inheritance to commission an all-star cast of modern composers to compose piano pieces exploring the theme of inheritance. In his pitch to his composer friends, Tendler wrote that he wanted “to plant that cash in the soil of something that may actually grow and — if you'll forgive me — live on.” To his amazement, every composer he wrote to agreed to contribute. Taking a trip or paying down a credit card seemed inadequate. “This is an inheritance so something should be done with it that sort of honors the gesture,” he told The Vermont Conversation. “The thing I do for a living is ideally creating experiences for people … which [are] cathartic and beautiful and [provide] a sense of connection,” he said. “What if I use it to facilitate that experience for people?” Tendler originally told his story in a 2023 essay for the New York Times, “My Father's Death, An Envelope of Cash, A Legacy in Music.”Adam Tendler is a Grammy-nominated pianist and a recipient of the Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists and the Yvar Mikhashoff Prize. The Minneapolis Star Tribune called him "currently the hottest pianist on the American contemporary classical scene." After graduating from Indiana University, Tendler performed solo recitals in all fifty states as part of a grassroots tour he called America 88x50. He has appeared as soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra, LA Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony and at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and other venues. He is on the piano faculty of the Steinhardt School at New York University. Tendler took a circuitous route from Barre to the concert stages of the world. After college, he worked at the landfill in Coventry and was a substitute teacher at U32 and Twinfield high schools. His relationship to his hometown is both affectionate and ambivalent. “I love Barre, I love Vermont, but it wasn't really the most easy place to grow up as a queer kid,” he recalled. “Music was a safety hatch … a real place within which I could hide, protect myself, express myself. I created a little fortress within it.""That vessel motivated me to actually start to really train to the point of getting into conservatory.”Tendler said that his work on Inheritances transformed his complicated feelings about his “semi-estranged” father “into something that feels like a companion in a good way.”“This project and having to sort of confront him on a human level, even though we're talking about music, has brought me back to him.
