Last week, conservation groups filed a lawsuit to stop exploratory drilling for lithium in an area super close to Ash Meadows, a storied National Wildlife Refuge just outside of Vegas. This tiny gem of a desert oasis is home to the highest concentration of endemic species found anywhere in the U.S. But advocates for the mines say that not only is the operation safe, it's a crucial step in our urgent national campaign to replace gas-guzzlers with lithium-battery-powered electric vehicles. U.S. demand for lithium is expected to grow tenfold by 2030. Today, co-host Dayvid Figler sits down with Review-Journal environment reporter Colton Lochhead, whose recent feature story on Ash Meadows examines this growing tension between conservationists and clean energy advocates for lithium mining. Colton says that conservationists see Ash Meadows as a flashpoint in the struggle over lithium — because if we allow lithium mining here, then where won't it be allowed? And in a city like Las Vegas, currently under an ozone warning thanks to car pollution, are we asking the rurals to pay the price for our clean energy needs? Have you been to Ash Meadows? It's a year since heavy rain caused rivers in Mid-Canterbury to burst their banks causing huge damage to farmland. An area known as Greenstreet inland from Ashburton was the hardest hit - paddocks were left covered in shingle and hectares of pasture were under water. Rurals reporter Sally Murphy paid farmers a visit.

Today marks 140 years since the first shipment of frozen New Zealand lamb made it to London. No mean feat, the successful shipment paved the way for what is now a billion dollar export industry. Rurals reporter, Sally Murphy, looks back at this day in history.

On this episode we feature uMngomezulu on the guest mix, formally know as Deepland originally from KZN real name Thulasizwe. He started his music journey in 2009 that was his first year at Soul Candi Institute Of Music and while he was enrolling he was signed under music,myself and I as “Deepland” which is a label under Vinyl Joint. This has to be one of my absolute favourite mixes and to think I left it just sitting there on the hard drive for two years (hence the name) before rediscovering it and listening to it for the first time.
