Former 2ZB Wellington host Lindsay Yeo has died at the age of 78. His family say he died peacefully at his home in Richmond on Tuesday afternoon. Yeo hosted the top-rating breakfast show from 1972 to 1995, consistently taking the number one spot until the late 1980s. Working with him at 2ZB were broadcasters John McBeth and Raylene Ramsay - the latter still a newsreader at Newstalk ZB. They joined Nick Mills to share the memories of the man Wellingtonians loved. Episode #7: A mum's journey through picky eating and food phobia. Today I'm chatting with Raylene, mum to two boys, one who has been a picky eater most of his life and is now 11 years old. We chat about: - how the picky eating started - things they have tried - what is the most frustrating/ worst part of picky eating - how she looks after her own health and lots more. SUCH a big thank you to Raylene for being so honest and sharing such powerful and personal things about her life. Raylene is an absolute ray of positivity and it really shows throughout this chat. She has some valuable life wisdom to share, which I think can apply to everyone- not just parents of kids who are picky eaters! Raylene calls Baileys picky eating "food phobia", which may be classified as ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder). ARFID is a relatively new 'diagnosis' of food avoidances. You CAN get help, by seeing a professional trained in the SOS approach to feeding, which could be a speech pathologist, psychologist, occupational therapist or dietitian. Common wisdom says if they just had more willpower or more faith, their fight would be over. Have you heard of prebiotics before? In this episode of The Allsorts Podcast, we are going to talk all about prebiotics: what they are, how they work in the body and what benefits they might have for us and our gut microbiome. As a gut health dietitian, every time I talk about prebiotics, someone stops me…don't you mean PRO-biotics? Nope. Nope I don't. While probiotics - the beneficial bacteria found in our gut - get most of the press, prebiotics - the energy sources for those bacteria - don't get nearly as much attention. Yes, that's right: if you want your good gut bacteria to thrive, you need to feed them well. And what do they eat? Fermentable carbohydrates AKA prebiotics. For my IBS friends, you might recognize this concept because of the low FODMAP diet for IBS. FODMAPs are, by definition, fermentable carbohydrates…and some of them are in fact, prebiotics. So I am absolutely thrilled to introduce you to Dr Raylene Reimer PhD, registered dietitian, researcher and professor at the University of Calgary, who just so happens to be an expert on all things fibre and prebiotics. She is going to teach us everything we need to know about feeding our gut microbiome the right way. If you're a gut health nerd like me, I just know that you'll get so much out of this episode and it will have you looking at roughage with a whole new appreciation. About Dr Raylene: Dr. Raylene Reimer is a Professor of Nutrition in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. She is also a Registered Dietitian. Dr. Reimer has an internationally recognized research program focused on the role of diet in modifying the gut microbiome and how diet and the microbiome interact to prevent and treat chronic disease. She has done extensive research on dietary fiber and particularly prebiotic fiber. She has published >195 scientific research papers and is principal inventor on several patents. Her research has been widely recognized by the media and with several national nutrition awards. On this episode we chat about: What is a prebiotics, exactly, according to science Dietary fibre vs prebiotics How do prebiotics get used by our gut microbiome? Which foods have prebiotics? The number one source of prebiotics in the North American diet Prebiotics, the gut barrier, and inflammation Prebiotics and blood sugar control Should you take a prebiotic supplement? The exact dosages of prebiotics you need to have an effect for different conditions Is there anyone who should avoid prebiotics? Support the Pod! Our case begins in Waco, Texas in the summer of 1982 on the afternoon of July 13th when a trio of friends, 17 year old Jill Montgomery, 17 year old Raylene Rice, and 18 year old Kenneth Franks headed out that Tuesday summer evening for some fun in a park near Lake Waco. The next day, two men had first noticed the what they believed to be a drunk young man propped up against a tree near the shore line of Lake Waco. When they called out to the man and approached closer, they realized that the young man had been badly beaten with his hands tied behind his back. The young mans clothes were soaked in blood from what would later be discovered the result of 27 stab wounds all over his body. Officer Simons was quickly able to identify the young man as Kenneth Franks. Just a few minutes later, Raylene was found with her hands bound behind her back, gagged, she was naked and had been stabbed 9 times. Not far away, Jill's body was found. Jill's throat had been slashed. She was also found bound, gagged and naked and had been stabbed 17 times. A large majority of stroke awareness, stories and advocacy is centered around older or aging populations. When we think about stroke, we envision an adult or a person with high risk factors, adult risk factors, such as smoking, drinking, high blood pressure, etc…. Though more common in adults, stroke is among the top 10 causes of death in pediatric patients. Kyler's family have become advocates for pediatric stroke awareness. Telling and retelling their story through AVM Alliance, a Cure for Kyler and Friends, an organization they started to raise funds for AVM Foundation and the AVM Research Foundation in an effort to better the lives , support networks, and medical care of those affected by aneurysms and other types of vascular malformations of the brain. I spoke with Kyler's mom, Raylene, about a year ago to learn about Kyler's story and her presence, fierceness, and no-quit attitude has stuck with me ever since then. She is not only fighting for her own son, but so many more children , families, and caregivers living with the fallout of pediatric stroke. And she's built quite an amazing community around it all. Unquenchable: Biblical Theology, Listening Prayer, and Christian Living
Alan and Raylene Kraft with Hope Abounds Ministry in Greeley Colorado [00:00:00] Raylene Kraft: I had already been on this journey of just realizing God actually speaks and that prayer is a dialogue and not just a list. I still remember the guy we prayed for the first time we kind of started this and it was this cowboy kind of manly man. And, he left the session and it was really cool, but then we cleaned up and kinda did the room and then as we were leaving, he was still out in the parking lot. Jumping and dancing around his pickup, shouting I hear from God, and I thought, yes, you do. We all do. And so that's just been our journey of just wanting to help other people experience that. [00:01:25] Don Love: Hello. I'm Don love the host of unquenchable, and this is my bride ministry partner and Co-host Jennifer Love. [00:01:32] Jennifer Love: That's Me! We've finished last season, talking about ministry to pastors. As we had a short prayer session, we led at a pastors conference in Tennessee. You can go back and listen to episodes 19 and 20 to hear some of the testimonies that came out of that conference. [00:01:46] Don Love: That conference was three years ago now. And Jen and I just finished our 10 day Pray Through It tour through Colorado, where we followed up with these pastors from season one. And on this trip, helped their congregation to take the next steps by demonstrating and explaining the biblical basis for listening and inner healing prayer in their churches. In the next few episodes among other things, we'll be discussing a bit about how the growing understanding of these pastors practice of listening in prayer is reshaping the way that they and their people minister to one another. But before we introduce our guests today, we have a few upcoming events. In March, we have a soul care retreat and a castle in Lexington, North Carolina. [00:02:25] Jennifer Love: In April, we have a women's retreat in Lynchburg, Virginia, [00:02:28] Don Love: And keep an eye out for details about an in-person pray through training coming up in may. [00:02:34] Jennifer Love: You can check out, Pray Through It.com for details. And while you're listening, why not help us to reach others by giving us a five star view, and maybe writing a sentence or two telling others what they can expect to get from listening to the show. Last season. I mentioned that we had the privilege of staying at the house of Alan Kraft. He's the lead pastor of Christ community church in Greeley, Colorado, and the author of More: When Just a Little of the Spirit is Not Enough. What we didn't mention was that Alan was among the pastors that we prayed through things with at that conference in Tennessee. [00:03:02] Don Love: At that time, I didn't know who he was, nor that he and his wife Rayleen were well on their way to lead their church, to practice in their own approach, to listening and inner-healing prayer. What perhaps amazes me the most about Alan is how engaged he is in learning and how quickly he applies, what he's learning in his own walk and in his church. When we first met, he watched, as I prayed through things with another pastor. And when we were done praying, he slid into the seat beside me and said, you've got time for one more? And so we prayed through some things with him as well, that day. And then later that same day, Alan told me, you know, I really like your approach in listening in prayer, and I'm going to implement some of these things in my church sometimes soon. What really shocked me though was later that same week, he called me with a listening and inner healing prayer that he had written and he was telling me that he was going to use that, that very Sunday in his church. And then I was shocked again, as he offered to host a training in his church the very next month. And the more that I've gotten to know, Alan, the more that I see there's something in the way that he leads his congregation that exemplifies the Ap...
