So, how about that Aaron Rodgers debut? Oof. Getting out of the Mets game and finding out that's how it went… a strange time.According to data from Stathead, there are 17 non-quarterbacks who have thrown more passes for the Jets than Rodgers' single attempt before getting hurt. And here they are!12: Tom Tupa (punter, 1999-2001)7: Dick Christy (halfback, 1961-63); Brad Smith (wide receiver, 2006-10)4: Jeremy Kerley (wide receiver, 2011-17); Jim Turner (kicker, 1964-70)3: Josh Cribbs (wide receiver, 2013); Matt Snell (fullback, 1964-72); Al Toon (wide receiver, 1985-92)2: Louie Aguiar (punter, 1991-93); Richie Anderson (fullback, 1993-2002); Leon Johnson (running back, 1997-2000); LaMont Jordan (running back, 2001-04); Braden Mann (punter, 2020-22); Curtis Martin (running back, 1998-2005); Steve O'Neal (punter, 1969-72); Bilal Powell (running back, 2011-19); Chuck Ramsey (punter, 1977-84)Aguiar, Anderson, Christy, Johnson, and Jordan were unable to register a completion, with Aguiar, Johnson, and Jordan all getting picked off once. Snell also threw an interception, the only other one of this group to do so. Only three of these players threw for touchdowns: Smith, the former Mizzou quarterback, had one, while Tupa hurled two TD passes and both of Martin's attempts turned into six points.Just the other day, Bill Belichick rememberred Tupa's exploits from Cleveland, but he was very much there on the Jets sideline the day that the punter saved the day with his two TD passes. According to Stathead's data, last night's home run by Mark Vientos off Aroldis Chapman was the 98th time in Mets history that they've gotten a solo shot with two outs in the ninth inning, and the third time this season. It's the second time this season that a rookie has saved the Mets from being shut out this way, as Francisco Álvarez also did it on July 5 in Arizona. The difference there was that the Mets were only down 1-0, so it was a game-tying home run — one of 13 out of these 98 when the Mets were one swing of the bat from getting even, and got even with the one swing of the bat.The Mets went on to win that game on Mark Canha's triple to score Brett Baty later in the ninth, and a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame by David Robertson. They did not win the other game when they got a solo shot with their last gasp, as Eduardo Escobar only got the Mets within 9-8 against Atlanta on May 1, the final score of that one.The most recent walkoff on a two-out solo shot by a Met was nearly five years ago, September 13, 2018, as Todd Frazier ended the first game of a doubleheader moments after Michael Conforto had also homered off Kyle Barraclough for one of those 13 game-tying solo shots. There have been 58 of these homers when the Mets have been behind in a game, including Vientos last night. His dinger followed Escobar into a more exclusive club, the 24th solo home run in Mets history when down to their final out at home.Only three of those have been tying homers: Conforto in 2018, Jerry Buchek off Atlanta's Dick Kelley in 1967, and Gus Bell in the fifth game in Mets history, off Jim Golden of the Houston Colt .45s at the Polo Grounds. Herb Moford gave up a three-run homer to Don Buddin in the 11th inning and the Mets would need to wait another six days to get their first-ever win.Vientos' homer saving the Mets from being blanked at home puts him in a club that only started in 1976, when Ron Hodges went deep off Pittsburgh's Doc Medich, followed like last night by the final out of a 2-1 game. On August 27, 1985, Darryl Strawberry ended Jerry Reuss' bid for a complete game shutout, but Tom Niedenfuer came out of the Dodgers bullpen to strike out George Foster and notch another 2-1 verdict. The disappointment was not as stark, nor as important, the following September 8, when Strawberry denied Bob Sebra a shutout at Shea. Sebra got the complete game win, and did shut out the Mets three weeks later in Montreal, on just two hits — a Gary Carter double in the second, and an infield hit by Lenny Dykstra in the sixth. There was even less drama on October 2, 2001, when Jay Payton denied Bronson Arroyo what would've been his first career shutout. He still got his first complete game and a 10-1 win, but had to wait until 2006 to twirl the first of his six career shutouts.Strawberry and Hodges are the only ones there with Vientos in homering to get the Mets one more chance in a game they trailed 2-0. The last time before last night that the Mets broke up a shutout at home this way, it would've taken a lot more chances: Brandon Nimmo got the best of Danny Barnes on May 16, 2018, and Wilmer Flores followed with a double, but Barnes managed to compose himself and get Conforto to ground out and lock down the Blue Jays' 12-1 triumph.Earlier that year, on April 15, Flores tagged Matt Albers of the Brewers for a two-out solo shot that was a walkoff. He also did it on July 22, 2017, off Oakland's Simon Castro. That ties Flores for the team record for a career, but not a single season, because Cleon Jones turned two 1-1 ties into 2-1 wins, just one week apart, in 1971 — August 21 off San Diego's Dave Roberts and August 28 against the Dodgers and Jim Brewer.Other than Flores, Jones, and Frazier, the Mets' walkoffs on solo shots, one out from extra innings, belong to Rusty Staub on May 9, 1982 off San Francisco's Greg Minton, and Mike Cameron off Danny Patterson to beat the Tigers on June 18, 2004.Cameron walked off Patterson and the Tigers the next night, too, delivering the decisive base hit in the 10th inning. Yesterday, Pete Alonso had the 186th game in Mets history with a home run and a caught stealing. It was the first time that Alonso has done this in his career, which makes him the 91st Met to post such a performance. No Met had homered and been caught stealing in a game since last July 4, when Brandon Nimmo did it in Cincinnati. Nimmo has had three of these games, and the Mets have won nine of the 10 games since the start of the 2019 season where they had a player go deep but also get nabbed. The somewhat dubious team record for a single-season is four, set by Lee Mazzilli in 1978 and matched by Darryl Strawberry in 1985. Strawberry is the franchise leader at 16 games with a homer and caught stealing, with Mazzilli at 11, followed by Howard Johnson at eight, José Reyes at 7, and David Wright and Joel Youngblood at five apiece. What Alonso would like to have done yesterday is have his seventh career game with a homer and a steal, which would snap a tie with Lenny Dykstra and tie Lindor and Cleon Jones for 11th on the Mets' franchise list. Ahead of them, and more in Lindor's sights in the years to come? Strawberry's team record of 35 should be safe for a while, with Johnson (28), Reyes (27), and Wright (20) all far above the rest of the field. Then it's Carlos Beltrán and Mookie Wilson (13), Kevin McReynolds (12), Tommie Agee (10), and Mike Cameron and Dave Kingman (9).According to Stathead, the career leaders for homer/steal games are…* Barry Bonds, 102* Rickey Henderson, 87* Álex Rodriguez, 65* Bobby Bonds, 61* Joe Morgan, 60* Willie Mays, 58* César Cedeño, 48* Beltran, 44* Bobby Abreu, 43* Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines, Alfonso Soriano, Larry Walker, 42* Strawberry, 40And to get back where we started, the leaders for homer/caught stealing combo games…* Mays, 29* Babe Ruth, 27* Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, 25* Bobby Bonds, 24* Henderson, 22* José Canseco, 21* Cedeño, Lou Gehrig, Mike Schmidt, 20* Morgan, Gary Sheffield, Strawberry, 19One more note on Alonso. As he tied Keith Hernandez on the Mets' career RBI list, he also tied Mex in homer/caught stealing games. It was also against the Pirates, but at Three Rivers Stadium, on April 21, 1987: Hernandez was caught stealing by the battery of Brian Fisher and Junior Ortiz, but took Bob Walk deep for an insurance run that helped lessen the impact of Barry Bonds' three-run homer off Bob Ojeda in the eighth. Hernandez singled and scored in the ninth, and Jesse Orosco closed out the 9-6 contest, getting Bobby Bonilla to ground out to end it with Bonds, who would have represented the tying run had he gotten the chance to hit, left on deck. Hail to the CBA and the Yakima Sun Kings forever. And also hail to the corner of the record book where David Peterson now finds himself: the first pitcher in major league history, according to Stathead, to post a line with at least six walks, five strikeouts, a hit batter, and a home run allowed — with the homer accounting for the only run against him — in fewer than five innings. Or four innings, for that matter. Or, in fact, had the exact combination of six walks and five strikeouts with their one run allowed on a homer and their hit batsman. Peterson is the very first.Peterson did all that while throwing 91 pitches to get 11 outs, and the Mets didn't come completely unglued until the seventh inning, after which the back-to-back home runs by D.J. Stewart and Jonathan Araúz weren't enough. The previous record for fewest innings pitched in a game with at least six walks, five strikeouts, a hit batter, and a lone run on a homer was 5.2 for Jonathan Sánchez, for the Giants in Arizona on June 11, 2009. A Justin Upton homer and Max Scherzer on the (plus an Upton RBI single off Brandon Medders) lifted the Diamondbacks to a 2-1 win in that game.Sánchez, who walked seven in that game 14 years ago, was the first pitcher to crack the six-inning barrier, and until last night was the only other pitcher at all to have a six-walk, five-strikeout game with a hit batter and the only run on a homer, in the entire 21st century. Sánchez remains the only pitcher ever to have such a line and be the losing pitcher. The only other time that a pitcher's team lost one of these games was April 15, 1942, when the Pirates scored five runs against Elmer Riddle in the first inning, and Ray Starr came in from the bullpen and kept things respectable, going the rest of the way with seven strikeouts and seven walks, and allowing the only other Pittsburgh run in a 6-2 affair on a Bob Elliott dinger. There have been a bunch of different walk and strikeout totals among the now dozen pitchers in this group, but only one man hit two batters: Scott Garrelts plunked Brett Butler and Glenn Hubbard while also walking seven, striking out six, and outdueling Pascual Perez, who went the distance for Atlanta in a 2-1 loss (Chris Chambliss hit the homer) to Garrelts and the Giants at Candlestick Park on September 7, 1983.Before Garrelts, there was Mike Torrez (1976 Orioles), Tom Griffin (1969 Astros), Ken McBride (1961 Angels), Pedro Ramos (1956 Senators), Bob Turley (1954 Orioles), Bobby Shantz (1952 A's), and Rankin Johnson (1914 Chi-Feds), all in winning efforts of their own — sloppy games that were somehow one swing from being shutouts. Shantz went 14 innings at Yankee Stadium, striking 11 and walking seven in his game, while giving up the homer to Mickey Mantle and drilling Johnny Mize. The one other pitcher on the list, the one between Garrelts and Sánchez? Dwight Gooden, against Atlanta at Shea on April 26, 1989. Ron Gant homered in the third inning, but the Mets scored two in the fifth for a 3-1 lead, and homers by Kevin McReynolds and Howard Johnson provided a 6-1 cushion. That was the final score, but Gooden provided some stress by walking his last two batters to load the bases in the ninth. Gerald Perry then made Randy Myers work for the last out, a 10-pitch battle finally ending with a foul tip into the glove of Gary Carter. You can see that game now, thanks to the internet! The first time the Mets walked off the Yankees was in the first Subway Series iteration at Shea Stadium, in the second year of interleague play, 1998 — Luis Lopez hit a sac fly off Ramiro Mendoza that brought home Carlos Baerga with the winning run.The next year, Matt Franco singled home Rickey Henderson and Edgardo Alfonzo to lead the Mets to an improbable 9-8 victory over Mariano Rivera. There was a Shane Spencer walkoff fielder's choice in 2004 against Tanyon Sturtze to bring home Kaz Matsui, then a David Wright single off Rivera that scored Paul Lo Duca in 2006. After Jason Bay singled home Scott Hairston in the 10th inning of a 2011 game against Hector Noesi, the Mets walked off Rivera in a third different decade when Lucas Duda singled in Wright for a 2-1 verdict in 2013.The Mets didn't hit their first walkoff homer against the Yankees until 2020, when they did it twice: Amed Rosario off Aroldis Chapman (at Yankee Stadium in a doubleheader, what a strange time) and Pete Alonso off Albert Abreu. The Mets still haven't walked off the Yankees with a homer in front of people because next came Starling Marte's single off Wandy Peralta last year… and then last night, the first walkoff double the Mets have ever had against the Yankees, Brandon Nimmo driving in Eduardo Escobar (who also scored last year's walkoff run) off Nick Ramirez.Walkoff doubles are rare because how often is someone running all the way to second base on a walkoff hit? The winning run is scoring ahead of you, and you can probably stop at first base. Last night, Nimmo's ball hung up in the air, so he was running it out while Escobar had to hold up and make sure the ball wasn't caught. The Mets, in their history, have had 139 regular-season walkoff homers, and just — now — 33 walkoff doubles.Escobar had one last year against the Phillies, hit to a similar spot in right field as Nimmo did last night. Before that, you have to go back to Austin Jackson off Javy Guerra in the 13th inning against the Marlins in 2018, and before that Justin Turner against Sean Marshall and the Cubs in 2011. Wright and Ed Kranepool are the only Mets with multiple walkoff doubles, each with two.The major league record for career walkoff doubles is five, according to Stathead, and it's shared by Adrián González, Chuck Klein, Hunter Pence, and Frank Robinson. Escobar has three in his career, which puts him second to Eric Hosmer among active players, and tied with a group that ranges from Henry Aaron to Don Slaught. It's a weird sport. Last night was one of the best pitched games of the season, not just for the Mets, but in all of Major League Baseball. Kodai Senga's seven innings of one-hit shutout ball, with nine strikeouts and no walks, has been matched this year only by Michael Kopech of the White Sox in a 2-0 win over the Royals on May 19, and veteran Drew Smyly, now with the Chicago Cubs, in a 13-0 pasting of the Dodgers on April 21.It was such a clean, crisp performance, with such ease, and with that little Kody Clemens single in the third inning that plopped in front of Tommy Pham, you might not think of it as so great, especially without the round number of 10 strikeouts, but here's the list in Mets history of pitchers who, according to Stathead, went 7+ frames of one-hit ball (none of these Mets was pulled after seven innings of a no-hit bid), with nine or more strikeouts and no walks…* Tom Seaver, July 9, 1969 vs. Cubs (the Jimmy Qualls game)* R.A. Dickey, June 13, 2012 at Rays (9-1 win, unearned run after an error in the ninth)* Matt Harvey, May 7, 2013 vs. White Sox (no-decision, Mets won in 10 innings)* Jacob deGrom, May 21, 2015 vs. Cardinals (Matt Carpenter first-inning single)* Senga, last night vs. PhilliesEmbrace the power of the Ghost Fork. This year's LFGM Pride shirt with Sarah Wiener's logo design is now available… and also we sent some to the fellas at 41 Seaver Way. Hope they enjoy them and wear them with, well, pride. We've been over Pete Alonso's torrid start with home runs, and he heads to Denver for the weekend with a major league-leading 19, a new Mets record for 51 games into a season. He's got three dingers in nine career games there, for whatever it's worth.Alonso also brings with him to Denver, for the first time since his initial tear, an OPS of .900, while toting a .239 batting average. His strikeout rate is up a tick, but his BABIP is a mere .210, and that's what going to Colorado can really help with, so we'll see what happens there. What's interesting here, and the subject of today's Stathead search, is the lowest batting averages with a .900-plus OPS for a full season, which we'll cut off at .260 because it's interesting and right before the next-lowest batting average this season for a guy with a .900 OPS, Juan Soto (.262/.917).* Mickey Tettleton, 1995 Rangers, .238/.906 (32 HR)* Harmon Killebrew, 1962 Twins, .243/.912 (48 HR)* Adam Dunn, 2005 Reds, .247/.927 (40 HR)* Ronald Acuña Jr., 2020 Atlanta, .250/.987 (14 HR)* José Bautista, 2015 Blue Jays, .250/.913 (40 HR)* Jason Giambi, 2003 Yankees, .250/.939 (41 HR)* Mike Schmidt, 1979 Phillies, .253/.950 (45 HR)* Giambi, 2006 Yankees, .253/.971 (37 HR)* Schmidt, 1983 Phillies, .255/.923 (40 HR)* Jack Cust, 2007 A's, .256/.912 (26 HR)* Pat Burrell, 2007 Phillies, .256/.902 (30 HR)* Shohei Ohtani, 2021 Angels, .257/.965 (46 HR)* Killebrew, 1963 Twins, .258/.904 (45 HR)* Josh Donaldson, 2019 Atlanta, .259/.900 (37 HR)* Todd Hundley, 1996 Mets, .259/.906 (41 HR)* Alonso, 2019 Mets, .260/.941 (53 HR)* Bautista, 2010 Blue Jays, .260/.996 (54 HR)* Greg Vaughn, 1996 Brewers-Padres, .260/.903 (41 HR)And for what it's worth, the lowest batting average in a 60-homer season belongs to Roger Maris, who hit .269 in 1961 — his .993 OPS that year is the only sub-1.000 figure for a 60-dinger club member. Sammy Sosa had a 1.002 in 1999, for a 151 OPS+, the lowest in that category for a 60-homer season. Sosa was at 160 in 1998, while Maris had a 167 in 1961. Mickey Mantle's was 206 that year. If we'd had advanced stats then, the conversation would've been insufferable. This is a public episode. James Harden tied for seventh all-time last night, scoring 45 points on the road against the Celtics in the playoffs, and without a lot of ado, here's the list (asterisk indicates the Celtics beat them anyway)…63: Michael Jordan (1986 - 2OT)*61: Elgin Baylor (1962)50: Wilt Chamberlain (1960)49: Jordan (1986)*47: Jimmy Butler (2022), Dominique Wilkins (1988)*45: Harden (2023), Paul Millsap (2016 - OT)* LeBron James (2012), James (2008)*, Jerry West (1965)*Harden scored 41 points for the Nets at Boston in the playoffs two years ago, so in addition to landing in a tie for seventh on the single-game Boston Garden (and successor) visiting scoring list, he's also in amazing company with multiple 40-point playoff games in Boston.Bahlor and West did it four times apiece, James and Jordan each three times. The other day, I wrote on the We Can Pod It Out show notes, “an extensive accompanying newsletter that I hope to write” could be part of this episode. Sorry to tell you that it is not, but glad to tell you that my digital journalism urge to do power rankings of baseball managers' celebratory throwability was beaten back. Instead, please enjoy this video of Tsuyoshi Shinjo, whose exploits in Japan we discussed on this show, throwing out Robin Ventura by so much at third base, Ty Wigginton had to look for him. That play was in 2003, when Shinjo hit .193/.238/.246 with no stolen bases and only four extra-base hits in 124 plate appearances… and still was above replacement level (0.2 bWAR) because of his defense. That got me curious, and rather than expand on things said on a podcast, why not stay true to Willets Pen style, and use this as an opportunity to learn something weird. Thanks to Stathead, here are the most plate appearances in a season for players with positive WAR and negative oWAR (the offensive component)…Warren Cromartie, 1979 Montreal Expos: 710 (1.8, -0.3)Rico Brogna, 1999 Phillies: 679 (0.2, -0.2)Bill Collins, 1910 Boston Doves: 660 (0.2, -1.0)Rick Bosetti, 1979 Blue Jays: 657 (0.5, -0.3)Manny Trillo, 1976 Cubs: 649 (0.2, -0.2)…and for Britt's sake…Pedro Feliz, 2006 Giants: 644 (1.8, -0.2)The top one of these seasons for the 21st century, when we have more reliable WAR components, is something for sure. For the Mets, the guy you'd probably expect is on the team list (on which Shinjo's 2003 ranks 52nd in team history), but not at the top…Hubie Brooks, 1983: 624 (0.2, -0.7)Rey Ordoñez, 1999: 588 (2.8, -0.4)Jeromy Burnitz, 2002: 550 (0.1, -0.1)Ordoñez, 1996: 530 (0.9, -0.1)Jeff Francoeur, 2010: 447 (1.1, -0.6)For a full career, Ordoñez ranks 11th in baseball history at 3,407 plate appearances with a 1.2 career WAR and -3.7 career oWAR. The top 10?Tim Foli (1970-85): 6,573 (5.6, -0.3)Neifi Pérez (1996-2007): 5,510 (2.6, -3.4)César Izturis (2001-13): 4,679 (6.1, -0.9)John Corkhill (1883-92): 4,614 (5.1, -2.1)Pedro Feliz (2000-10): 4,544 (5.6, -0.7)Malachi Kittridge (1890-1906): 4,464 (1.6, -0.2)Jimmy McAleer (1889-1907): 4,423 (1.5, -3.0)Mike Lum (1967-81): 3,999 (5.1, -0.1)Hugh Nicol (1881-90): 3,825 (4.1, -0.9)Mark Lemke (1988-98): 3,664 (6.1, -1.7)Kittridge is interesting because his name jumps out, and because he's 45th all-time in career passed balls with 202. But for context, that's one fewer than Hall of Famer Jim O'Rourke, 108 fewer than Hall of Famer Connie Mack, 158 fewer than Hall of Famer Buck Ewing, 218 fewer than Hall of Famer King Kelly, 289 fewer than Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson, 303 fewer than Hall of Famer Deacon White… and 561 behind all-time passed ball king Pop Snyder.Want to talk about the unbreakable records in sports? Pop Snyder had SEVEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY-THREE PASSED BALLS. Drew Smith threw 780 pitches for the Mets last season. Casey Stengel sure was right about the Mets picking Hobie Landrith at the start of their expansion draft, that without a catcher, you have a lot of passed balls… but in the era he grew up in, it didn't seem to matter. The active leader in passed balls, Yasmani Grandal, has 92. There were seven seasons in the 19th century where that wouldn't have led the league, from Rudy Kemmier's record 114 in 1883 to Doc Bushong's 95 in 1881.Only one post-integration player is even in the top 50 all time for passed balls, and it's eight-time All-Star Lance Parrish, who had 192 of ‘em from 1977-95 with the Tigers, Phillies, Angels, Mariners, Cleveland, Pirates, and Blue Jays.In 600 major league games this year, there's been a total of 31 passed balls. In 1884, there were 3,907 in 3,074 games. So, from 1.27 passed balls per game to 0.05 passed balls per game, all in just a matter of 139 easy years! This is a public episode. Last night's Mets game was a little weird. It's not every day that Max Scherzer takes a no-hitter into the fifth inning, then leaves the game after that fifth inning even though all he gave up was a little single to Ha-Seong Kim. The 11-pitch strikeout of Austin Nola to end the fifth took Scherzer's count up to 97 for the night, and in an April game where the 38-year-old issued six walks to go with his three strikeouts, the five scoreless innings equaled the limit. No problem for Buck Schowalter, because John Curtiss, Drew Smith, David Robertson, and Adam Ottavino combined to strikeout eight of the 16 batters they faced in the final four innings, allowing only three walks and a ninth-inning single to close out the 5-0 victory.Altogether, the Padres were 2-for-28 against Mets pitchers in the series opener, with 14 strikeouts. And that's where we start generating a fun Stathead list.Last night marked only the fourth time in Mets history that they have shut out an opponent, not allowed an extra-base hit, and recorded strikeouts in at least half of their foes' at-bats. Where does last night fit into Mets history? Here are the other three games on this particular list.April 18, 1970: Nolan Ryan never threw a no-hitter for the Mets, but he did record 27 outs in a row without giving up a hit in this game, led off by Phillies second baseman Denny Doyle with a single. Ryan walked Don Money, struck out John Briggs and Deron Johnson, walked Tim McCarver to load the bases, and then struck out Larry Hisle to get out of the first-inning jam. By the time Ryan got the ball back, he had a 3-0 lead… and completely shut down the Phils from there. Philadelphia batters went 1-for-29 with 15 strikeouts and six walks in the 7-0 New York romp.May 15, 1970: Tom Seaver gave up a third-inning single to Mike Compton, the Phillies' catcher, and got all the support he needed in the fourth inning when Woodie Fryman threw a wild pitch to score Donn Clendenon and Compton's throwing error on that play allowed Ron Swoboda to come around as well. Seaver went the distance, striking out 15 as host Philadelphia went 1-for-29 against him at Connie Mack Stadium.September 29, 2007: Game 161, when it seemed like maybe the Mets had figured it out and were going to salvage that season, a 13-0 demolition of the Marlins featuring two Lastings Milledge home runs and the Mets going 10-for-22 with runners in scoring position. On the mound, John Maine was nails, allowing only a pair of walks while taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Paul Hoover broke up the bid with a little infield single, ending Maine's outing with 14 strikeouts and two walks. Willie Collazo got Alejandro De Aza to fly out to end the top of the eighth, and then Carlos Muniz notched the staff's 15th strikeout of the day when he got Reggie Abercrombie to end the game. The Fish went 1-for-27, saving all their hits for the next day.Scherzer's early exit also is notable because it was the first time the Mets pulled a starter who'd given up one or no hits over the first five innings since Tylor Megill last April 29, in the Mets' combined no-hitter against the Phillies. Megill and Jacob deGrom each had two starts apiece like that in 2021. The last seven Mets pitchers to do this — Scherzer, Megill all three times, deGrom twice, and David Peterson on August 13, 2020 against Washington — have recorded the win, after no Mets pitcher had gotten a win in such a game in 12 years following a Maine five-and-fly in Washington back in 2008.Alongside Megill in getting pulled after five innings of no-hit ball? Sid Fernandez on May 15, 1987 against the Giants, when the lefty helped himself with an RBI triple but gave way to Doug Sisk with a 7-0 cushion in the sixth. Sisk gave up three runs, but Roger McDowell came through with the three-inning save. This is a public episode. In 10 games, Pete Alonso has hit five home runs, the second time in his career that he's started a season that way, as in 2019, the then-rookie made an instant impact with not only the five dingers, but 10 other hits for a .385/.429/.923 start to his career. To start this season, Alonso's line is at .237/.326/.658. It's been a weird first couple of weeks. This isn't a record-setting start, although Alonso does have as many homers so far as the Guardians, Nationals, and Tigers. Dave Kingman had the most dingerrific start to a Mets season, with seven in the first 10 games in 1976 — he wound up with 37 (of the Mets' 102 total) home runs, finishing second in the National League to Mike Schmidt's 38. While the season total for Kingman was first eclipsed by Darryl Strawberry in 1987, and now is just outside the top 10 in Mets history, the 7-in-10 start remains alone at the top, according to Stathead. With six homers in the first 10 games of a season, we find Ray Knight in 1986 (finished with 11, plus one more in Game 7 of the World Series), John Buck in 2013 (finished with 15, all with the Mets before being traded with Marlon Byrd to the Pirates for Dilson Herrera and Vic Black), and Yoenis Céspedes in 2017 (finished with 17, played only 81 games). Also with five for a nice 90-homer pace after the season's opening 10 games? The aforementioned Strawberry on his way to breaking Kingman's team record in 1987, Gary Carter in 1988 (finished with 11), and Jeff Kent in 1994 (finished with 14 in 107 games before the strike). What's next for Alonso, the first Met ever to start two seasons with five dingers in 10 games? He's already tied for 36th on the team's list for homers in the first 20 games, and the record there, the one that all Mets fans will want to see fall in the next 10, is shared by Kingman's 1976 effort and the nine homers that Neil Walker hit to start 2016, on his way to going deep 23 times that year.Alonso is currently tied for 11th on that list with his seven homers to start 2019, while the list at eight is fascinating, too: Frank Thomas 1962 (finished with 34), Kingman in 1982 (a league-leading 37 that time), Kent in 1994 (14), Todd Hundley in 1994 (16) and 1996 (then team-record 41), Richard Hidalgo in 2004 (and here's where we note that this is in the player's first X number of games, not the team's, because Hidalgo joined the Mets in a June trade for Jeremy Griffiths and David Weathers, having already hit four homers for the Astros — he wound up wiht 21 in 86 games as a Met, still the record for most homers by a player with 145 or fewer games played with the club — Eduardo Escobar is currently at 21 homers in 145 games, and Byrd had 21 in 117, for what it's worth, while Mo Vaughn is next on whatever this list is at 29 in 166), Carlos Delgado in 2006, and Céspedes in 2016 (31). You know I can't resist a good Wilt Chamberlain stat around here, and this one from Bomani Jones sent me scrambling to Stathead, so you know it's a good one. That's pretty surprising, isn't it? That the seventh-leading scorer in NBA history doesn't hold any team's points record? But that's also been the case for a little under two years — it was April of 2021 when Steph Curry passed Chamberlain, who scored 17,783 points for the Dubs in five-and-a-half seasons.Chamberlain played 429 games for the Warriors, while Curry has appeared in 876 so far with the only NBA team he's ever been on.Here's the Warriors' all-time list of per-game scoring, with a minimum of 100 games played:Chamberlain (429 games) 41.5 ppgKevin Durant (208 games) 25.8Rick Barry (642 games) 25.6Curry (876 games and counting) 24.6World B. Free (162 games) 23.4So, you look at Chamberlain going from the Warriors back to Philadelphia with the 76ers in 1965, and his precipitous decline to… let's take a look at the 76ers' per list, where Hal Greer remains the all-time leading total scorer but “only” averaged 19.2 points per his 1,122 games (a total of 21,586), and still holds the record because those dummies traded Allen Iverson (19,931 points in 772 games)Chamberlain (277 games) 27.62 ppgIverson (722 games) 27.61 Joel Embiid (389 games and counting): 27.2Charles Barkley (610 games) 23.3Julius Erving (836 games) 22.0Chamberlain played his age 32-36 seasons for the Lakers, one of which was limited to 12 games — and he still led the NBA in rebounding each of his four healthy, if declining, seasons in Los Angeles (he only missed one other game the whole time). So, it's not surprising that Chamberlain isn't near the top of the Lakers' all-time scoring list, and in fact he's 24th with 5,985, a couple of spots above Nick Van Exel, who was pretty darn good in his five seasons with the Lakers. On a per-game basis, Chamberlain had 17.66 with the Lakers, which puts him between Pau Gasol (17.73) and James Worthy (17.62), in 15th all-time for the franchise. The Lakers' list? That's an interesting one, because the leader could very well play himself out of the top spot.LeBron James (271 games and counting) 27.42 ppgElgin Baylor (846 games) 27.36Shaquille O'Neal (514 games) 27.033Jerry West (932 games) 27.030Kobe Bryant (1,346 games) 25.0O'Neal and West being separated by three-thousandths of a point per game over their careers in Los Angeles, spanning more than 1,400 games between them, is out of control.Baseball season is coming, but we have a whole lot more basketball statistrata to work on here. After yesterday's realization that RJ Barrett was one point away from giving the Knicks three players with 30-plus on Sunday night in Boston, there's an obvious question… have the Knicks ever done that? We know they haven't done it against the Celtics, but… let's fire up Stathead.Turns out, the answer is yes. On March 24, 1979, the Knicks had a double-overtime home loss to the Bulls, 148-143, in which Earl Monroe and Ray Williams each scored 34 points and Toby Knight added 30. Chicago got 41 from Artis Gilmore and 33 from Mickey Johnson at the Garden. There's one other time it happened: March 2, 1962. If that date is familiar… well, we just discussed that one, too, because it was Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game. The Knicks got 39 points in that one from Richie Guerin, 33 from Cleveland Buckner, and another 31 from Willie Naulls, but obviously Chamberlain in triple figures and four other Philadelphia Warriors (Paul Arizin, Al Attles, Tom Meschery, and Guy Rodgers) in double figures was enough for a 169-147 final. So, the Knicks are 0-2 all time when they have a trifecta of 30-point scorers. Good thing that Barrett didn't get that extra free throw to fall and join Immanuel Quickley and Julius Randle in the 30 club, right?Since that Knicks-Bulls game in 1979, there have been 29 times that an NBA team had three guys go for 30 or more points… and the Knicks have been responsible defensively for three of them.December 27, 1988: Hawks 128, Knicks 126 (at Atlanta) — Reggie Theus (32), Moses Malone (30), Dominique Wilkins (30)January 18, 1989: Warriors 133, Knicks 119 (at Oakland) — Winston Garland (31), Mitch Richmond (31), Chris Mullin (30)January 5, 2020: Clippers 135, Knicks 132 (at Los Angeles) — Montrezl Harrell (34), Lou Williams (32), Paul George (32)The Knicks are 0-7 all time when there are three 30-point scorers in a game, because the Hawks also did this to them in 1971 in Atlanta (Walt Bellamy 33, Pete Maravich 31, Lou Hudson 30) and in 1960 in St. Louis (Clyde Lovellette 39, Cliff Hagan 32, Bob Pettit 32).The most recent such game anywhere in the NBA? December 28 of this season, when the Kings had Malik Monk score 33 points off then bench, plus 31 apiece from De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis in a 127-126 home win over the Nuggets.Use code WCPIO for 10% off in the Willets Pen shop! When Damian Lillard had his 71-point game, it wasn't just a new Portland Trail Blazers record, it was also a record for the most points scored against the Houston Rockets. We know the record for scoring against the Knicks is Wilt Chamberlain with 100 points back on March 2, 1962 (see yesterday's episode)… so, how about the rest of the NBA?Lillard broke a record previously held by Allen Iverson, who scored 58 against Houston in 2002. The Answer still has one of the team-specific records that comes up when you go down the Stathead rabbit hole: the most points scored in a game against the New Orleans Hornets — specifically the New Orleans Hornets, with 55 on April 20, 2003. A double nickel… a dime, if you will, on 4/20.Thing is, Devin Booker had a 58-point game against the New Orleans Pelicans this season, and George Gervin once scored 63 against the New Orleans Jazz. So, let's just go through some players and admire their great performances that are records against some forms of team — most active, some not.Alvan Adams: 47 vs. Buffalo Braves, 1977LaMarcus Aldridge: 56 vs. Oklahoma City Thunder, 2019Carmelo Anthony: 62 vs. Charlotte Bobcats, 2014Elgin Baylor: 63 vs. Philadelphia Warriors, 1961Devin Booker: 70 vs. Boston Celtics, 2017; 58 vs. New Orleans Pelicans, 2022Kobe Bryant: 81 vs. Toronto Raptors, 2006; 65 vs. Portland Trail Blazers, 2007; 62 vs. Dallas Mavericks, 2005; 60 vs. Memphis Grizzlies, 2007; 60 vs. Utah Jazz, 2016Wilt Chamberlain: 100 vs. New York Knicks, 1962; 78 vs. Los Angeles Lakers, 1961; 73 vs. Chicago Packers, 1962; 70 vs. Syracuse Nationals, 1963; 67 vs. St. Louis Hawks, 1962; 66 vs. Phoenix Suns, 1969; 65 vs. Cincinnati Royals, 1962; 63 vs. Philadelphia 76ers, 1964; 62 vs. San Francisco Warriors, 1966; 56 vs. Baltimore Bullets, 1964Tom Chambers: 60 vs. Seattle SuperSonics, 1990DeMarcus Cousins: 56 vs. Charlotte Hornets (current), 2016Tony Delk: 53 vs. Sacramento Kings, 2001Joe Fulks: 63 vs. Indianapolis Jets, 1949George Gervin: 63 vs. New Orleans Jazz, 1978Gail Goodrich: 53 vs. Kansas City/Omaha Kings, 1975James Harden: 61 vs. San Antonio Spurs, 2019; 58 vs. Miami Heat, 2018Allen Iverson: 55 vs. New Orleans Hornets, 2003Michael Jordan: 69 vs. Cleveland Cavaliers, 1990; 64 vs. Orlando Magic, 1993; 61 vs. Atlanta Hawks, 1987; 57 vs. Washington Bullets, 1992Bernard King: 60 vs. New Jersey Nets, 1984Damian Lillard: 71 vs. Houston Rockets, 2023; 61 vs. Golden State Warriors, 2020; 60 vs. Brooklyn Nets, 2019Karl Malone: 61 vs. Milwaukee Bucks, 1990Moses Malone: 53 vs. San Diego Clippers, 1982Antonio McDyess: 46 vs. Vancouver Grizzlies, 1999Tracy McGrady: 62 vs. Washington Wizards, 2004George Mikan: 61 vs. Rochester Royals, 1952Reggie Miller: 57 vs. Charlotte Hornets (original), 1992Donovan Mitchell: 71 vs. Chicago Bulls, 2023; 57 vs. Denver Nuggets, 2020Tony Parker: 55 vs. Minnesota Timberwolves, 2008David Robinson: 71 vs. Los Angeles Clippers, 1994David Thompson: 73 vs. Detroit Pistons, 1978Klay Thompson: 60 vs. Indiana Pacers, 2016Jack Twyman: 59 vs. Minneapolis Lakers, 1960Get 10% off in the Willets Pen shop with the code WCPIO! Today is the 61st anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game……and we're less than a week away from Damian Lillard scoring 71 against the Rockets. You don't need a cool video on that, it just happened and it's all over the internet.I noticed on the list of all-time 70-point games that Lillard's was the first in the month of February. Indeed, according to Stathead, the all-time record for the month had been 68 by Pete Maravich in 1977. Naturally, I wanted to find out the rest of the monthly records, so I did, and here they are…January: Kobe Bryant, 81 (Lakers vs. Raptors, 2006)February: Lillard, 71 (Trail Blazers vs. Rockets, Sunday)March: Chamberlain, 100 (Philadelphia Warriors vs. Knicks at Hershey, Pa., 1962)April: David Thompson, 73 (Nuggets at Pistons, 1978)May: Charles Barkley, 56 (Suns at Warriors, 1994 Western Conference first round)June: Michael Jordan, 55 (Bulls vs. Suns, 1993 NBA Finals) and Lillard, 55 (Trail Blazers at Nuggets, 2021 Western Conference first round)July: Giannis Antetokounmpo, 50 (Bucks vs. Suns, 2021 NBA Finals)August: Lillard, 61 (Trail Blazers vs. Mavericks at Bay Lake, Fla., 2020)September: Jamal Murray, 40 (Nuggets vs. Clippers, 2020 Western Conference semifinals)October: Chamberlain, 59 (San Francisco Warriors vs. Knicks, 1962) and James Harden, 59 (Rockets at Wizards, 2019)November: Chamberlain, 73 (San Francisco Warriors at Knicks, 1962)December: Chamberlain, 78 (Philadelphia Warriors vs. Lakers, 1961)Lillard now owns or shares three of these records, two thanks to the coronavirus pandemic schedules. Chamberlain still holds three of the monthly scoring records that he set in the calendar year of 1962.There's a lot more from this rabbit hole to come. Stay tuned! —JS This is a public episode. By Jesse SpectorIn addition to grabbing Keelin's words from yesterday's show notes, I'm not going to try to duplicate that format! I'm going to expand a little bit on Jeff McNeil's batting crown and other end-of-season stats.McNeil is the first Met in 11 years to win a batting title, and the first Met ever to lead the majors in average. Miguel Cabrera batted .344 in 2011 to edge the Mets' shortstop who won the club's first batting crown.Pete Alonso tied Aaron Judge for the major league lead with 131 RBI, and his National League-leading total of 16 intentional walks trailed only Judge (19) and José Ramírez (20) in the majors. The only other time a Met won the National League RBI crown was 1991, when Howard Johnson knocked in 117 runs, again trailing a Tiger — Cecil Fielder (133) — for the major league lead. It's the first time a Mets slugger has led the Senior Circuit in intentional walks, and the first time for a New York NL leader since Duke Snider's 26 in 1956… or, if you want to be pedantic about “New York NL” and not “Brooklyn,” Mel Ott's 13 in 1934. Ott trailed Jimmie Foxx, who was intentionally walked 17 times for the Philadelphia A's.It might have been a #markcanhasummer, but it obviously involved Mark Canha getting hit by a lot of pitches. Twenty-eight, to be exact, the most in baseball, as part of a team that set a modern record by getting in the way of 112 pitches. Canha can comiserate with teammate Brandon Nimmo, who got plunked 22 times to also lead the majors four years ago — also with a former Mets prospect leading the American League: Andrés Giménez (25) this year, Carlos Gómez (21) in 2018. Canha's HBP total was the most by any major leaguer since Anthony Rizzo got drilled 30 times for the 2015 Cubs. Nimmo was “only” hit 16 times this year, tied for fourth-most in the NL with Jake Cronenworth and Kyle Farmer. Along with Starling Marte (unlucky 13), Alonso (12), McNeil (11), and Francisco Lindor (10), there were six Mets in double figures for getting hit by pitches. Out of a total of 24 players in the National League. Those six men — Canha, Nimmo, Marte, Alonso, McNeil, and Lindor — now walk together (and rub some dirt on it) into baseball history, as they have joined (per Stathead) only one other such group in baseball history: the 1899 Baltimore Orioles, whose manager had to wince at Steve Brodie getting hit by 23 pitches, Jimmy Sheckard 18, Bill Keister (what an aptonym) 16, Ducky Holmes 15, and Candy LaChance 10 times. That's only five players, because the manager was, like Buck Showalter, a Baltimore Orioles manager who made his way to New York's NL club a few years later: John McGraw, at that time a 26-year-old player/manager — his first season in the role he'd win the 1904 pennant and 1905 World Series in with the Giants.McGraw didn't just get hit by 14 pitches in 1899, he led the league with 124 walks, 140 runs scored, and a .547 on-base percentage. He also stole 73 bases, and did one more thing that Showalter didn't do this year: got ejected five times. It may not last, but for now, Showalter not only has the highest career winning percentage as Mets manager (.623 — Davey Johnson is the multi-season leader at .588 from 1984-90, he was tossed 13 times), but the most games managing the Mets without getting the heave-ho.The man who once succeeded Showalter in the Bronx, Joe Torre, is the Mets' managerial ejection leader with 24 during his 286-420 tenure in Flushing. When and if Showalter does get the business end of an ump's thumb (guess who), the Mets' no-ejection record will revert to Roy McMillan and his 53 games in charge after succeeding Yogi Berra in 1975.McMillan got the Mets in striking distance by Labor Day, when Tom Seaver, on the way to his third Cy Young, pitched a four-hitter (in a tidy hour and 55 minutes) against the Pirates to close the division gap to four games and pick up his 20th victory of the year. But the next night, Pittsburgh blitzed Jerry Koosman for eight runs in 3.2 innings (homers by Bill Robinson, Manny Sanguillen, and Rennie Stennett) and rolled to an 8-4 win. Felix Millan and Mike Vail got the Mets on the board with back-to-back one-out doubles in the first inning of the rubber game, but after a walk to Dave Kingman, Rusty Staub bounced into a 4-6-3 double play. Bud Harrelson made an error on a Willie Stargell grounder to allow the Pirates to tie the game in the fourth, and Robinson's homer off Jon Matlack in the seventh effectively ended the Mets' season. The next series against the Cardinals was a repeat: Seaver winning, Koosman and Matlack losing, and a sweep in Montreal meant that when the Mets got another crack at Pittsburgh, out at Three Rivers, they were nine games back. They wound up 10.5 games out in third place. These Mets? They wound up with 101 wins, same as the team that now gets a bye to the division series. That's where you can get on the train to the playoffs. Hello! Here are your handy links to our Discord, merch store (check out the Pride collection!), and Twitter. This is a bonus episode of the podcast for paid subscribers, but on the back end of our Grand Opening Spectacular, we'll have a free newsletter coming later today. We're back for our second episode of Willets Pod At The Park, and so far, it's been a real boon to the New York baseball teams to have us recording at their games. The first time we did this, with Jesse Spector and Thornton McEnery, the Mets throttled the Nationals, 10-0. This time, Jesse took comedian Tony Deyo to the Bronx and not only saw the Yankees beat the Tigers, 13-0, but a seven-run inning.Gerrit Cole did not wind up pitching a perfect game, of course, nor did Jose Trevino hit for the cycle. Eduardo Escobar did wind up cycling for the Mets three nights later, but obviously he did so with a triple to finish, not going homer-triple-double-single.Counting up the total number of cycles that went in “reverse order” is beyond our capabilities here, but we can tell you the last time it happened: old friend Rajai Davis, not at that point an old friend, for Cleveland at Toronto on July 2, 2016 — 25 major league cycles ago now. Davis did have a groundout in his third at-bat in that game, so for completeness' sake, the last recorded player to turn the trick in four straight at-bats (there were four cycles in the 1940s without inning-by-inning data on Stathead) was Arky Vaughan, for the Pirates against the Giants at the Polo Grounds on July 19, 1939. In between, Carlos Gomez, Luke Scott, Jim Fregosi, and Jackie Robinson also did it with outs amid cycles. Given that there are 24 possible orders to tick the boxes on a cycle checklist, you'd maybe expect each outcome around 4.2% of the time. It's actually happened about 2.3% of the time over the last 80-some years, and that seems well within a margin of error for something so infrequent. The last player to cycle in order? Another eventual Met, Gary Matthews Jr., for the Rangers in Detroit, September 13, 2006. This is a public episode. Back in 2000 Sean Forman was a graduate student with a love for baseball. He never imagined that he'd create a wide-ranging enterprise - Sports-reference.com that encompasses not only baseball but American football, basketball, hockey, soccer and college football and basketball. The sites are so user-friendly and have become a go-to platform to get statistics for players, teams and leagues associated with all those sports. Now they've created a subscription service Stathead.com that allows the data to be searched and parsed even more easily which is great since there is SO MUCH data. We talked with Sean on how it all began, how it's used today and how fans can use a few cool tips to get more out of Baseball-Reference.com! Please subscribe to our podcast and thanks for listening!
