Sign up for the Derek Thompson newsletter. In Game 7 of this year's NBA Finals, Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton tore his Achilles in the first quarter while attempting to drive to the basket on an injured calf. It was the third major Achilles injury of the 2025 NBA playoffs. Curiously, Achilles tears are typically an older-dude injury, as they're most common in middle-aged men, according to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Biomechanics. So the sudden clustering of this injury among star athletes in their prime has inspired a lot of head-scratching among NBA fans and even the league itself. “We had already convened a panel of experts before Tyrese's most recent Achilles rupture,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said. When you zoom out from basketball and consider the broader landscape of sports, the injury surge seems quite real. In baseball, we've seen a huge increase in the so-called "Tommy John surgery," which repairs a torn UCL in a pitcher's elbow. In soccer, ACL injuries have been rising, particularly in women's soccer. And that's before we get to the huge amount of media attention that's been paid to concussions in football. What's going on here? Vern Gambetta, a conditioning coach, trainer, and adviser to professional soccer, baseball, basketball, and Olympics teams, explains why major injuries might be surging across sports—and what it tells us about the risks of pushing the human body to its physical limit. In today's episode of The Pacers Post Up, we break down Kevin Pritchard's end-of-season press conference, where the Pacers' President of Basketball Operations addressed a whirlwind start to the offseason. Pritchard opened up about Tyrese Haliburton's injury, his recovery outlook, and what the team expects from its All-NBA guard heading into next season. The big headline, though, is the official confirmation of Myles Turner's departure to Milwaukee — a move that signals the end of a major era in Pacers basketball. We also dive into Indiana's evolving frontcourt, now featuring a “center-by-committee” strategy with the Jay Huff trade, the James Wiseman signing, and what that rotation could look like on both ends of the floor. Is it a stopgap or the future? We discuss. Plenty to unpack as the Pacers begin reshaping their identity for 2025 and beyond.

On today's episode of The Right Time, Bomani Jones discusses the New York Knicks hiring Mike Brown and T.J. Watt holding out. Bo begins the show by saying why this Mike Brown hire is interesting (1:59) because the Knicks should win the Eastern Conference with Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton injured (2:45). Bo continues by explaining why the Knicks do have an unreal amount of pressure on them and the clock is already ticking on this roster (10:28). Transitioning to the NFL, Bo talks about T.J. Watt holding out because he wants a Myles Garrett-type contract (18:25) and that this current Pittsburgh Steelers team reminds him of the Philadelphia Eagles 'Dream Team' because their roster is full of aging vets - which does not work in today's NFL (25:22). And finally, we have another round of If You Haven't Heard stories involving why Americans are sleeping less, billionaires going crazy and Gen Z having less sex (32:15). Then Bomani listens to some voicemails about the craziest thing you've seen someone do to get their money back. This week on the Mallory Bros Podcast, the guys kick things off shamelessly before the Weekend Recap. They start with the news of Cardi B finally gearing up to drop her long-awaited sophomore album and speak on her new track “Outside”. Terrell talks about how he's disappointed in her decision to add songs that were already on the charts and challenges if Cardi is “serious” about a next step in music. Next, B. Simone's viral 9–5 controversy resurfaces after a clip of her speaking on her financial problems goes viral. This reignites the conversation about entrepreneurship and the hardship that comes with its ups and downs. The fellas then unpack the controversy behind Mexican OT's latest clip where he was asked if he was comfortable using the N-Word. The bros have a good discussion on perspective and structure within the culture when it comes to things folks may find offensive and how do we address that. The Bros then do a fun Black Movie Edition “Which is Better?” series where they pit two classic films against each other and are forced to make a decision. This is a test segment for this podcast so if you like it, definitely leave a comment to do more. Later, the Bros revisit the crazy NBA Finals and the unfortunate timing of the Tyrese Haliburton injury and Terrell closes us out with a real convo on his DOOM SCROLL ADDICTION and how social media might be robbing us of peace.

Join Jason as he explains how the WNBA has evolved into a modern soap opera, albeit a poorly scripted drama. Caitlin Clark is the lead in this soap opera, as both the protagonist and antagonist. Joy Taylor's recent take proclaiming that Clark's fame is thanks to Angel Reese is the current plot that Jason highlights, along with the ever-present Alphabet Mafia policing WNBA broadcasts. Steve Kim joins the discussion to pontificate on the fact that the league doesn't Make America Great Again; Max Kellerman teaming up with Dana White and returning to the media stage for a major boxing match; and Tyrese Haliburton proclaiming he wouldn't change his decision to play through a calf injury that eventually led to a year-long sideline. Last, the NFL seems to deepen ties with Jay-Z. Make sure to tune in to Harmony afterward, as Jason explains why Genesis 12:3 has become a topic of conversation, as well as the ongoing stories in the Middle East. Jason also explains recent spats involving Tucker Carlson, Ted Cruz, and Elon Musk. Today's Sponsors: Relief Factor With Relief Factor, you'll feel better every day, and you'll live better every day.
