After losing her first child in her early twenties, Olympia packed up her life and headed to the northern territory. As she says she was running away from her issues. She found herself as the only female working in an export yard and as only Olympia can do quickly became part of the crew, and may have surprised them.She headed for the USA, as an avid horse lover she became a horse trainer in Stephenville Texas, a dry county. She would ride her bike several miles after a long day of training horses to have a few beers at the local club.Olympia left the dry county and met her now-husband Eric, a US Marine who deployed to Afghanistan several times. Olympia shares the reality of living in a Marine Corps Town, the thoughts of not when they would return but if they would return home. Olympia is simply extraordinary her will to make a difference is inspiring and this is where she finds herself today, reducing food waste going to landfill and feeding it to the Soldier Flies which ultimately then lead to becoming a stock feed. Today we're talking to my friend and Stamford, Texas attorney, James Decker. As you will see today, there is no one I know who loves Texas. Allsup's burritos, and the law more than James!   James grew up in Stamford, Texas and after receiving his Agribusiness degree from Texas A&M and law degree from Texas Tech University, he returned home and hung out his own shingle. Our main focus today is on settling an estate after someone has passed away. Particularly, we will focus on the probate process and on various statutory alternatives to probate here in Texas. James offers the following advice for all people:  "Die with a will.  It's just easier on everyone."  I couldn't agree more!  We kick off our discussion by talking about intestate succession laws, meaning the applicable statutes that come into play to distribute assets when someone dies without a will.  As you will hear, this can cause significant issues and lead to disputes and added expenses that no one wants to leave behind. Next, we turn to the Texas probate process and discuss what happens when someone dies with a will.  Specifically, we look at how a will generally makes its way through probate and then we look at an alternative method of probate, which James calls "express lane probate," the Probate by Muniment of Title.  As James points out, we are fortunate here in Texas to have a relatively user-friendly probate process and, unlike in some other states, it may be that going through the regular probate process is actually the cheapest, simplest option to settle an estate.   Next, we turn to various probate alternatives.  These include transfer on death accounts, affidavits of heirship, small estate proceedings, heirship proceedings, life estates, and transfer on death deeds.  James walks us through the pros, cons, and requirements for each of these. As always, we close the show by asking for a law that James would like to see changed.  He went with a law that is high up on my own wishlist and said that he would like to see some sort of surface damage act to protect surface owners in Texas when oil and gas production may occur on their land.  As he notes, Texas is basically the only major oil producing state without this type of legislation.  Hopefully one day, we'll see James in the Texas Senate to push this kind of bill through. They're an investment, but think about how much money you'll save by eating in out on the road with your prepared goods! https://www.shoporca.com/default.asp https://yeticoolers.com/ Fitness: I always have a hard time working out on show days. It's not always easy to get to a shower after a work out in a parking lot so here are my three options for working out on the road. Find the nearest gym, maybe you have a membership with them, maybe you don't. I have found that when traveling most gyms will either charge you a day rate or give just let you come on in and give there facilities a try! You can even take a shower if need be. There was an Anytime fitness right down the road in Stephenville Texas and my band and I were looking for a place to get out of the hot Summer sun and work out. Anytime took us in and we had a great work out. It depends on the staff at the gym location, I would stick to Anytimes, Golds, 24 Hours, or Planet Fitness.  Yoga: You can practice near anywhere! I've done it in parking lots, parks, venues, during load in, sounds check. Yoga is a great go to on the road. You can make the intensity what ever you like, so if there isn't a shower near by don't go so hard :)  Daily WOD: This is my main go to. It's fast, tough, and easy all at the same time. For 5 times repeat these below:          40: jumping jacks (for higher intensity squat jacks)          30: squats (for higher intensity hold your medium weight travel bag, for me this is my back pack)          20: sit ups or crunches (Mix it up to keep it interesting)          10: push-ups REPEAT 5 times :) you'll be feeling good, and you can get that beer at the bar that has been calling your name all afternoon! Snacking: Sitting a in a van or car for hours on end make it pretty boring at times. Even if the conversations are flowing my natural go to is to snack. It's so so easy to do. SO I have a couple of options to help curve the urge. WATER: Drink water, water, water. By having something to hold and consume you're giving yourself something to do with your interesting conversation about the pot holes in the road. ICE BERG Lettuce: this was a trick I learned from a touring buddy from the rock band FlyLeaf. Ice Burg lettuce allows you to chew on something and again gives your body something to do while you talk about the number of cows vs calfs in the field yonder way. Carrots: eating carrots and hummus are a tasty snack. And believe me after 10 baby carrots you'll want to throw the bag out the window because you jaw has been not only chewing forever but talking about that new Taylor Swift song that you just can't figure out what it's about. You'll exhaust your jaw to the point of step one, water and quite possibly a nap!
