In this episode of On Mission, Dr. Matt Davis speaks with Mark Cover, BJU graduate and Co-CEO at Hines in Houston, Texas, where he has spent his career overseeing real estate acquisition, development and operations for Hines' Southwest Region. Mr. Cover shares insights from working across cultures to build everything from community apartment complexes to billion-dollar stadiums; and how his unique skill set and personal mission to please the Lord translates to mentoring young people on the investment side and is funneled back to ministry in his discipleship of men in his local church. Mr. Cover is transparent about his plan for retirement, which is to steward his time, talent, and treasure long into the future by supporting church planting in inner cities through his family's 501(c)(3) Great Commission Properties. Dr. Davis and Mr. Cover also discuss the challenges of stewarding personal and organizational assets well, including the cultural differences and risks of doing business or missions in foreign communities. This episode pulls back the curtain and lets us see a high-level perspective of not just another high-stakes real estate developer, but one who desires nothing more than to be used of God to “send it on ahead” and see lives changed from darkness to light.

Community gardens are shared and sacred spaces that are often laboratories of activism and democracy. In urban environments, they are often the only place where residents can connect with nature and get a taste of what life could be like outside of the confines of the urban matrix. Most importantly, they are portals to lifestyles of self-sufficiency, or Heaven. Recently, the land upon which the Compton Community Garden operates was put up for sale by its owner, and volunteers and others involved with maintaining the garden have organized effectively to pave a way forward. But the battle doesn't end there, for there is a whole country full of agricultural land, and millions upon millions who need to be fed. What measures have been put in place to confront this land ownership disparity in California and America? How do we scale this battle, utilizing the allies and tools available? The nine were released October 22. “I urge each of you to pray a decade of the rosary in thanksgiving to God for the safe release of our brothers and sisters who were kidnapped,” Bishop Aloysius Fondong Abangalo of Mamfe said. On September 16, unidentified gunmen attacked St. Mary parish in Nchang, in Cameroon's Southwest Region. Nine people were abducted and buildings on the parish premises, including the church, were burned down. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252644/cameroonian-diocese-urges-prayers-of-thanksgiving-for-release-of-captives For the second time in less than two years, EWTN's affiliate in Poland has had its YouTube channel suspended, reported Father Piotr Wiśniowski, general director of EWTN Poland. Without any warning or explanation, on Oct. 22 YouTube shut down the Catholic programming channel, which features a live broadcast from the adoration chapel in Niepokalanów Monastery in Teresin, Poland, which was founded by St. Maximilian Kolbe. Almost one million viewers visit the channel each month for what is known as the world's most popular televised eucharistic adoration. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the chapel was a lifeline to the faith for those who could not leave their homes to go to Mass. Apart from the adoration chapel, the content of the channel is not unlike EWTN's English-language programming. There is Catholic news along with 4,500 videos of devotional content, movies, lectures, and homilies. Wiśniowski and the staff at EWTN Poland appealed to get the channel started up again and were told confusing and contradictory reasons for the shutdown. The channel was restored three and a half days later. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252643/youtube-shuts-down-ewtn-s-polish-channel Today the Church honors Saint Evaristus, the son of a Greek Jew originally from Bethlehem, who was the sixth Pope of the Catholic Church. He is traditionally considered a martyr, but there is no documentation of the event. He is buried in the Vatican, near Saint Peter. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-evaristus-pope-33 The Church also celebrates Blessed Damian of Fulcheri. Born the son of a wealthy Italian family, Damian was kidnapped as an infant by a man who suffered from a mental illness. His parents prayed fervently to the Virgin Mary for help, and searchers were led to the unharmed boy by a miraculous light. Damian later became a Dominican priest, and he was famous for his missions throughout Italy, during which hundreds of people were converted to the faith, and was also known for working miracles. Many miracles were reported at his tomb in Modena, Italy after his death in 1484. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/blessed-damian-of-fulcheri-636

In this position, she served as the administrator for the Office of Structure Preservation and Management and led the teams responsible for the National Bridge Inspection Program and Structure Preservation. Curtis discusses the importance of asset management and how she will face the challenges of trying to maintain safe structures after decades of under-investment in transportation in Michigan. Later, Demetrius “Dee” Parker, who has been named director of the Bureau of Development, talks about the various positions he's held at MDOT and how they prepared him for the new post, overseeing everything from the design of road projects to acquisition of real estate, and permitting billboards. Parker has worked for the department for almost 30 years and brings a diverse background to the position and has more than 20 years of managerial experience in a variety of roles:•         Served for the past three years as the University Region engineer.•         Previously appointed as the Southwest Region engineer, administrator of the Contract Services Division, and manager of the Jackson Transportation Service Center. The final segment features a conversation with Brad Wieferich, who has been named MDOT's chief operations officer and chief engineer. The men's team were crowned WAC champs in 2016, 2019, and 2021. This past season Dr. Prudhomme guided both of his teams to the Regular Season Conference Titles, the Conference Tournament Championships, and automatic bids into the NCAA National Championships. Prudhomme has earned a total 8 WAC Coach of the Year honors sweeping both honors in 2019 and 2021 for both men's and women's tennis. Previously he earned coach of the year honors for the men in 2016 and for the women three years in a row from 2015 to 2017. Along with conference coach of the year honors, Prudhomme has also earned the USTPA National College Coach of the Year as well as the ITA National College Coach of the Year in Division II. As a Division II program, Prudhomme led the women's team to the NCAA Championships in his first season despite taking over a team that had only one win the previous season. The women's team saw a DII national ranking as high as No. 10 in the country under Prudhomme and reached the national tournament four times in seven seasons, including back-to-back trips to nationals in the final two seasons of Division II competition. The men's team reached as high as No. 8 nationally in the Division II ranks with a trip to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championships in 2012. The tournament berth was the first since the school reinstated the program for the 2008-09 season. Prudhomme wrapped up the men's five-year existence in Division II with three straight years of winning records and top-25 national finishes. Prudhomme has been an Elite Certified member of the United States Professional Tennis Association for more than 20 years. Through this organization, he has been awarded the USPTA Coach of the Year for the Southwest Region on five occasions, as well as USPTA Player of the Year on three different occasions. In addition, Prudhomme is also the Head Tester for the USPTA Southwest Division. Dr. Prudhomme is also a mental performance coach and has worked with numerous professional and college athletes. Some of his previous clients include UFC fighters, boxers, CrossFit athletes, baseball players, soccer players, and more. The head professional at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale since the early 1990s, Prudhomme privately has tutored players who have gone on to play at all levels. Because of his accomplishments at Paseo in the tennis industry, the mayor of Glendale presented him with a Proclamation of Recognition. As a player, Prudhomme held a world ranking from 1994 to 1997 on the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour. As an amateur, Prudhomme was ranked No.1 in the Southwest Region in four different years and reached national rankings of #11 in singles and #5 in doubles. He earned academic honors in the PAC-12 when he played at University of Arizona. Prudhomme is a graduate of Arizona with a bachelor's degree in business administration. A year into the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) initiative to engage the public in naming snowplows across the state, an update on progress. Shortly after MDOT launched the project in 2021, inspired by a plow-naming venture by Transport Scotland, Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist visited an elementary school in Benton Harbor where a class of fifth graders named a plow Tiger in honor of their school mascot. Gilchrist visited the school and spoke to the students shortly afterward.  On this week's podcast, Nick Schirripa, MDOT's Southwest Region media relations representative, talks about the project, the eye-popping numbers of submissions it inspired and why it has been a fun but important endeavor. He and Courtney Bates, a department analyst and web site administrator, worked together to create the naming contest, sort through the names and even put the names of plows on the Mi Drive site so they can be tracked in real time. As the Detroit Free Press reported in December, ”One year and more than 15,000 possible plow monikers later, and a handful of Michigan Department of Transportation staffers say they see a light at the end of the tunnel. But the project isn't quite over.” Schirripa talks about the interest this has generated and why it helps with education about what's involved in clearing snow from roads in Michigan winters and how the plow-naming project helps in education efforts about safety.
