It's never a great idea to pigeonhole a talented writer, but you could probably call Sloane Crosley a humorist... most of the time. Her newest, Grief Is for People, is a funny, raw, introspective, and beautiful look at grief from every angle. Rocked by the suicide of her best friend, Crosley dives into her pain and loss in this slim, but effecting book that will make you laugh out loud while you reach for your tissue box. (Yes, a cliche. But, here, a true one.) We also speak with McLean and Eakin books in Petoskey Michigan, run by a husband and wife team who fell in love in the shop they now own. Every election, tens of thousands of ballots are rejected. Many of these rejections are due to minor mistakes made by voters or officials that cause otherwise valid ballots to be tossed. The Republican Party has been involved in efforts to expand what types of errors cause a ballot to be rejected and limit voters' opportunities to correct errors in key states like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and more. Marc and Paige explain this widespread issue and what you should know. For a transcript of this episode, please email transcripts@democracydocket.com. From favelas to beachfront properties. From democracies to dictatorships. From economic booms to busts. From Catholicism to evangelical Christianity. And from white to many shades of colors. Brazil's January 8th insurrection occurred two years and two days after our own January 6th insurrection. While our news media has covered the many similarities between these two events, such as false claims of stolen presidential elections made by losing right-wing presidents and their supporters, I wanted to dig into Brazil's history, to look deeper for similarities and differences between Brazil and our own country. This is important because Brazil and the United States are the two most populous democracies in the Western Hemisphere. So, to better understand Brazil's history and compare it to ours, I spoke with Dr. Marshall Eakin, a distinguished professor of history at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Eakin is the recipient of two Fulbright-Hayes fellowships and grants from the Tinker Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the British Library, the Tennessee Humanities Council, and the Corporation for National Service. He has also been the recipient of numerous teaching and advising awards. Dr. Eakin is a historian of Latin America specializing in the history of Brazil. Although his work spans all of Brazilian history, his major publications have concentrated on the processes of nationalism and nation-building, economic and business history, and industrialization—primarily in the twentieth century. He has authored many books on Brazil. In this episode, we discuss two of them: Becoming Brazilians: Race and National Identity in Twentieth-Century Brazil, and also Tropical Capitalism: The Industrialization of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. To learn more about Dr. Eakin, you can visit his academic homepage. In addition, below is a link to another fascinating episode: S3E8: Chile's History of Polarized Politics, Dr. Claudio Fuentes I hope you enjoy these episodes. The world of the Wasteland is the longest-running Australian film franchise we can think of, and for good reason. Though some of the films have waited literally decades for the right circumstances for them to be made, the original film and its sequel have had a marked and well-studied effect on Hollywood and the Australian cinema experience since its initial release. What kind of effects could Mad Max have had? Aside from releasing Mel Gibson into the world, that is? The world of the Wasteland is the longest-running Australian film franchise we can think of, and for good reason. Join Michael in his discussion with Hugh Eakin about his new book Picasso's War, How Modern Art Came to America which recounts the determined effort of a tiny group of people who, for nearly 30 years, fought to bring modern art to the United States impeded by war, economic crises, and a deeply skeptical public. Joining Michael as a special guest to help facilitate this conversation is Dr. Philip Eliasoph, Professor of Art History and Visual Culture at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut. Guests Hugh Eakin Hugh Eakin, a senior editor at Foreign Affairs, has written about museums and the art world for The New York Review of Books, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. About Picasso's War “Picasso's War is the never-before-told story about how a single exhibition, a decade in the making, irrevocably changed American taste, and in doing so saved dozens of the twentieth century's most enduring artworks from the Nazis. Through a deft combination of new scholarship and vivid storytelling, Hugh Eakin shows how two men and their obsession with Picasso changed the art world forever. In January 1939, Pablo Picasso was renowned in Europe but disdained by many in the United States. One year later, Americans across the country were clamoring to see his art. How did the controversial leader of the Paris avant-garde break through to the heart of American culture? The answer begins a generation earlier, when a renegade Irish American lawyer named John Quinn set out to build the greatest collection of Picassos in existence. His dream of a museum to house them died with him, until it was rediscovered by Alfred H. Barr, Jr., a cultural visionary who, at the age of twenty-seven, became the director of New York's new Museum of Modern Art.” Dr. Philip Eliasoph Professor of Art History & Visual Culture, Dept of Visual & Performing Arts. As founder of Fairfield's Art History program (1975), Professor Eliasoph has been devoted to expanding students' knowledge, understanding and direct observation of world art. Sharing his passion for the history of art, he has focused on western art in the traditional and revolutionary contexts. Publishing on Renaissance models, ‘bel disegno' academic, canonical methods, his writing and public views converge on the muscular shifts of mid century American art styles – from Social Realism to avant-gardist Abstract Expressionism. In his critique of recycling styles, he proposes a history of art without labels, periods, or categorizations. More broadly, his lectures and museum tours are based on the continuum of style/zeitgeist progress from antiquity to the cyber age. The heritage of painting, sculpture, architecture and mass media as revealing ‘mirrors of time, place, and society.' Combining Ignatian inspired ‘discernment' with the humanistic qualities of aesthetic enjoyment, his lively, dynamic talks expand the pleasures of viewing the visual arts. Setting out with basic questions – speaking with freshman students or senior, lifelong art lovers, we come to explore: ‘what is Art?'* ‘why does humanity treasure its values?'* ‘how can I learn to actively critique, analyze and appreciate art as part of my own intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth as a fully realized human being”? In sync with an educated audience's aspirations to follow Jefferson's idea of ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,' he hopes to inspire and delight art enthusiasts of all ages. Often invited as a public lecturer, connoisseur and animated raconteur, his hope is to share his own artistic journeys as multi-dimensional ‘classroom/museum without walls.' With decades of ‘in country' art directed programs, he has escorted thousands of art pilgrims to museums, cultural landmarks, world heritage sites throughout the US and Europe. After a career as a regional art critic, publishing reviews for daily newspapers and magazines, he has been the weekly blogger for The New York Times InEducation global curriculum platform. Founder, moderator and host of the university's community based ‘Open VISIONS Forum' public affairs programs, he has enjoyed stage dialogues with many important 21st Century thinkers. Connecting art of the past with issues and contexts of today – he guides us to visually explore the masterpieces of ancient, Renaissance, modern and contemporary artworks – all the more enriching as we come to realize why: ‘Art Really Matters!' We're back on ArtCurious with another great interview episode for you today. Today's episode features a conversation about Picasso's War, a recent book by journalist Hugh Eakin. Today we think of New York as the center of the twentieth century art world, but it took three determined men, two world wars, and one singular artist to secure the city's cultural prominence. Pablo Picasso was the most influential and perplexing artist of his age, and the turning points of his career and salient facets of his private life have intrigued the world for decades. However, the tremendous feat of winning support for his art in the U.S. has long been overlooked—until now. In PICASSO'S WAR: How Modern Art Came to America, Eakin details the never-before-told story of how a single exhibition, years in the making, finally brought the 20th century's most notorious artist U.S. acclaim, irrevocably changed American culture, and in doing so saved dozens of the twentieth century's most enduring artworks from the Nazis. A talented, veteran-laden roster propelled LMU to win the WCC and make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007. Coach Flowers gives her outlook for the 2023 season, including new additions to the roster and coaching staff. She also talks about watching Team USA from a distance this summer after being involved as a player & coach for many years. Then, we head over to Provo as we welcome back BYU Head Coach Gordon Eakin to the podcast. Coach chats with In The Circle about the Cougar's final season in the West Coast Conference and their prospects heading into the Big 12 next year. Coach breaks down what players to look out for, BYU's season outlook for 2023, and a wide array of topics. We wrap up the show by breaking down Team USA's roster for the Pan American Championships in November and if the roster is built to take home the title.

Paul tells the Thessalonians that they can expect lawlessness in this world because Christ has not come yet. He will come soon, but until then Christians must not be deceived like those who stubbornly refuse the Word - they must stand firm in it.

Today on the show I have Stephen "The Dream" Eakin. Stephen is a 10th Planet Black Belt under Richie "Boogyman" Martinez. In this episode Stephen walks us through his journey to black belt, leaving his small hometown in Georgia, his MMA career from backyard fights to actual cage shows, how he joined the 10th Planet Freaks in San Diego only to go back to Georgia to start an academy just prior to a pandemic with his wife and babies. Stephen wears his heart on his sleeve, my heart went to my throat when he shares the moment he was awarded his black belt, the emotion was palpable. Many of us have had similar experiences and we may have thought that it was unique to us alone, so it's a benefit to the community to have someone share so transparently. It makes me want to see Stephen win in whatever endeavor he attempts. It's a great episode for all to hear, of particular note if you're a bigger person or have thought about opening an academy this is a good one for you. Every time I've read a Redgunk story recently, I've come away thinking the most recent was better than what I had seen before. I'm coming to realize that it's not a question of better; each one has been good on its own. . . .Bill Eakin is a brilliant storyteller." —Kim Mohan, Amazing Stories "Redgunk is simultaneously a place of prosaic horror and impossible beauty...author William R. Episode No. 558 features author Hugh Eakin and artist Jordan Weber. Eakin is the author of "Picasso's War: How Modern Art Came to America," which tells a story of how New York City slowly, eventually, came to embrace both European modernism and the art of Pablo Picasso. Eakin's history begins with John Quinn, a white-shoe attorney with a yen for progressive literature and art, and follow's Quinn's involvement and influence across New York and Europe, through the Armory Show, Alfred Barr, and more. The book is full of original research, new angles that give life to once-ossified narratives, and bright, well-paced prose. Indiebound and Amazon offer it for about $33. Jordan Weber discusses "All Our Liberations," an art installation and space for community learning, reflection and healing organized by the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in Saint Louis. The project, which runs from July 16-24, takes place at the Spring Church near the Pulitzer in Saint Louis's Grand Center Arts District. The project includes a three-tiered sculpture Weber made with black obsidian stones and participation from collaborators Weber met during a 2021 residency. During the week-long program Weber will host programs for both formerly incarcerated individuals and members of the public. Urban farmers, healers, and organizers from Close the Workhouse -- a Saint Louis-area campaign working to end mass incarceration -- are Weber's programming co-host. In April 2023, Weber will expand "All Our Liberation" as part of Counterpublic, a city-wide triennial.
