Heather and Joanne analyze the claims and framing of the standards and connect the curricular mandates to a century-old effort by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to control how Southern history was taught. There's a story Matthew Syed likes to tell. And he's told it a lot. It's about a turning point in his life. It's about learning from a failure and working hard to overcome his shortfalls and come back stronger. Except - he's realised he's been getting the story wrong. A key detail in the timeline is off. The turning point he thought was so important, might not be quite as significant after all. And the story just isn't as neat… In this episode of Sideways, Matthew's exploring how we use stories to make sense of our lives, and why that means they might not always be completely accurate. With Alexandra Georgakopoulou, Professor of Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics at King's College London; Robyn Fivush, Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Institute for the Liberal Arts at Emory University; and best selling ghost writer Shannon Kyle. The goal of plastic surgery is to create balance and proportion as it creates a natural look, not an extreme one. Most people considering plastic surgery aren't interested in looking overdone. Some people are willing to accept that they are going to be walking around with telltales that they've had plastic surgery, but most only want a few close friends or family members to know. They want a plastic surgeon who will keep them looking natural while touching up their appearance. Because it's very hard to undo some of the surgical telltales, preventing and avoiding these problems is always the best approach. Dr. Bass' delivers expert advice for how to avoid the "done" look and an overview of plastic surgery techniques meant to highlight natural beauty and simply combat aging, rather than making patients look like completely different people. About Dr. Lawrence Bass Innovator. Industry veteran. In-demand Park Avenue board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Bass is a true master of his craft, not only in the OR but as an industry pioneer in the development and evaluation of new aesthetic technologies. With locations in both Manhattan (on Park Avenue between 62nd and 63rd Streets) and in Great Neck, Long Island, Dr. Bass has earned his reputation as the plastic surgeon for the most discerning patients in NYC and beyond. We kick things off today with Samanta Krishnapillai from On Canada Project for a conversation about policing in Canada and what exactly it means when we talk about defunding the police. Spoiler, it doesn't mean chaos on the streets. Samanta joins me to share what it would look like to allocate the funds differently so that everyone feels safe and protected. Now that school is back, I thought it would be a good time to connect with Dr. Prachi Srivastava for a check in. Specialising in education and global development, Prachi is a Visiting Professor at McGill University who looks at education systems around the globe and has thoughts on how we can do better. It's mostly about TIFF this week with Anne Brodie for Saturday Night at the Movies and this week we take a look at the new documentary about the iconic David Bowie, the comedy-drama I Love Movies about a high school cinephile who gets a job at a Blockbuster knockoff in Brampton in the 80s, and Ever Deadly which focuses largely on Tanya Taqag's throat singing but in intercut with the harsh and otherworldly environs of Nunavut where she grew up. Aging gracefully is so old-school. Here at What She Said we're all about living agelessly. A timely topic given news of late, Denise Chand from The Sacred Space joins me to discuss letting go of our aging hang ups so we can live life on our terms. In today's age where we our senses are under assault constantly by screens everywhere we look, there is nothing quite so therapeutic as curling up with a good book that doesn't keep interrupting you with notifications and attention stealers. Susan Jasper from Telling Tales.org joins me to discuss how her festival and online space is connecting children and families with authors and illustrators to open minds and hearts for everyone. Finally, K Victoria, R&B/Pop/ Soul sensation, has the music industry sitting up and paying attention and after today's show you will be too. She joins me to share the inspiration behind her newly released single “Visions-When I Think Of You”. Even if you attended #91 in a different era or not at all, you'll probably catch a glimpse of instructors you had in the caricatures portrayed.Short on the subject matter learned and long on the experiences encountered this longer than usual installment should connect with anyone who had a public school education and should offer an enjoyable half hour to anyone longing for the simpler life.Blessings

During October at our 7pm services, we're looking at the Gospel of Mark. 24 October 2021 - 7pm ServiceHope Has a Name SeriesDuring October at our 7pm services, we're looking at the book of Mark. The apostle Mark's gospel is fast paced and concise, sharing an overview of key facets about Jesus' ministry and the good news He gives to us. This week, Dave is looking at why Jesus taught by telling stories and we look at the parable of the sower. You can go deeper with this topic on your own or in your small group using the discussion notes below.DISCUSSION NOTESRead Mark 4:1-34.People love a good story. When Jesus told parables, they weren't just memorable stories, they had a point to them that taught people more about the Kingdom of God.Why do you think Jesus taught through story? What is the power of story today? The parable of the Sower is in some ways an introduction to all parables, and a story about stories. How do we understand this parable? What kind of soil might we be?Is it possible to change our “soil type”? If so, how? What might a “fruitful” life look like?
Rebekah and Richard talk with Limestone County native and storyteller, Doug Wells. Laugh out loud as Doug and Richard recount growing up, going to town, and getting in trouble as young boys in 1940's Limestone County. They talk about standing room only Saturday nights on the Athens Square and paint a lively picture of life in a bygone era.Linkshttps://limestonecounty-al.gov/departments/archives/https://www.alcpl.org/ For information, questions, or suggestions email rebekah.davis@limestonecounty-al.gov. Kylie Miller has spent her career as an award-winning journalist and communications consultant. After trading the city life for a tree change in East Gippsland, Kylie experienced first-hand the devastating bushfires of the 2019-20 Australian summer. An introductory tour of the podcast, about the origin of the Cabin Tales stories, creative writing themes on fall episodes, upcoming guest authors; and a submission call for the Halloween Special Episode. 20 minutes. All ages. A full transcript of this episode is available at CabinTales.ca. [1:15] What is Cabin Tales? Cabin Tales is a podcast with an unusual format—a mix of fiction, education, and interviews. It's really like having an author visit every week – only it's absolutely free. And I bring talented friends with me. You don't have to like spooky stories to enjoy this podcast. If you like books and author talks and encouragement to write your own tales, then this podcast is for you. [1:50] The Origin of Cabin Tales Catherine Austen developed the Cabin Tales Podcast during COVID-19 to take the place of author visits in 2020. The stories in the podcast are from her draft novel, Cabin Tales, in which four young teens tell scary stories around a campfire (while their mothers disappear one by one). [4:00] The Podcast Format Each episode of Cabin Tales focuses on one aspect of creative writing. Episode formats alternate thus: First is a full episode that opens with an original story, followed by excerpts from three books that exemplify the week's theme—one for adults, one for young adults, and one for children—and a final prompt, told as a story, that listeners are invited to finish. In between readings, you get writing tips, commentary, suggested exercises, and 3 author interviews. Then the next episode features interviews with five more guest authors talking about the same creative-writing subject. So you get two weeks on each creative writing theme. We'll alternate between these formats, “Telling Tales” and “Talking Tales,” all season. [7:20] The Audience The Cabin Tales Podcast is for readers and writers of all levels of experience, but especially teen writers. The kids whose schools I won't be visiting this year. Stories told on the podcast are the sort that young people might tell around a campfire to spook their friends. Some are serious; some are silly; and some are a little scary. Consider them PG-13. For younger listeners, “fright-free” versions of episodes are available on the website at CabinTales.ca – all the good educational stuff with no scary bits. [9:00] Where to Listen The Cabin Tales Podcast is available through iTunes, Google Podcast, Spotify, SoundCloud, Stitcher, TuneIn, I Heart Radio, Learning out Loud, and through its host, Podbean. (Those platforms stream the original episodes only. For the fright-free versions, go to CabinTales.ca.) To be notified by email of every new episode when it comes out, follow the CabinTales.ca blog or follow Catherine on Facebook. Or subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or from any other streaming platform. [10:20] The Interviews All episodes of Cabin Tales feature excerpts from interviews with great Canadian authors for young people. Guest authors featured in August were Caroline Pignat, Lori Weber, Tim Wynne-Jones, Karen Krossing, Jan Coates, Rachel Eugster, Amanda West Lewis, and Monique Polak. Guests featured in September include Philippa Dowding, Ishta Mercurio, Wendy MacKnight, Amelinda Berube, Robin Stevenson, Raquel Rivera, and Kari-Lynn Winters. Guests coming up in the fall include Cary Fagan, Don Cummer, Sarah Raughley, Kate Inglis, Farida Zaman, Katherine Battersby, Christine Tripp, Peggy Collins, and many more. You'll hear little bits and pieces from all of these interviews this fall, and you can hear complete, edited interviews with each featured author in the winter, starting January 2021. [11:35] The Excerpts The podcast follows guidelines of Fair Dealing with the brief excerpts of copyrighted material used to illustrate fine writing. Episode shownotes link to the sources for all of these books. [12:30] Write your own Tale The Cabin Tales Podcast encourages listeners to write their own tales. Episodes include suggested writing activities, and each full episode ends with a story prompt that listeners are invited to finish. Some episodes also link to creative writing mini-lessons and templates that teachers can use straight out of the box. [14:25] The Halloween Episode Submissions are being accepted for a special Halloween episode of Cabin Tales, which will feature just student stories. Original spooky stories of up to 2000 words. Send your story, along with a few words about yourself and when and why you wrote this story, in the body of an email to cabin(at)catherineausten(dot)com or use the form on the contact page at CabinTales.ca. Sadly, we pay you nothing but respect. [16:45] The Cabin Tales Host, Catherine Austen I'm an author of short stories for adults, novels for children, and reports for corporate clients. I've won some awards. I've had stories published in great literary journals. I've given writing workshops at schools and libraries across Canada. I live in Gatineau, Quebec. [17:25] The Music Music on the podcast is from “Stories of the Old Mansion” by Akashic Records, provided by Jamendo under Standard license for online use. [17:50] What's coming up this season September 11: Episode 3, “Spooky Stories are all Around Us,” about getting ideas for stories. September 18th: Episode 3.5, “Author Interviews about Ideas.” Episodes 4 and 4.5 are about Plotting. Episodes 5 and 5.5 are about creating tension. October 23rd: “There's More than One Way to Tell a Story,” interviews with Canadian illustrators. October 30th, “Spooky Stories by Student Writers.” November and December episodes about Beginnings and Endings; Narrative Voice; and Revision A final December episode about the creative process and how to develop a writing practice. In January we'll begin a season of author interviews. (Monster-movie line: “I got a goddamned plan!”) [19:35] Thanks for listening If you like the show, please link to it on your social media, and share it with your writer-friends and reader-friends and teacher-friends, and together we'll get it into the ears of young writers and say to them: Write your own tale. Here's how.

Homer's epic spoken poem The Odyssey was composed 3000 years ago. It is a tale of Odysseus's ten year long journey home after the battle of Troy with its countless trials and adventures along the way. And alongside the story of Odysseus we hear from contemporary refugees, currently caught in limbo, living in camps in modern day Greece, who speak of their own experiences and challenges as they leave one home and hope to find another.
The retelling of an ancient story from the African Islands of Zanzibar. It is a tale packed with intrigue and death defying ingenuity in which a young wife has to use her determination and magical powers to save her own life and persuade her husband of the error of his ways. And in the light of this story, we also hear from modern day Zanzibaris, who reflect on love and marriage, then and now, and share their own personal experiences.
A retelling of an ancient Native American story from the Tohono O'odham Nation, whose traditional lands straddle the border between the United States and Mexico. The story encapsulates the tribe's close relationship with their land, plants and animals. But their ancient way of life is now under threat from President Trump's plans to build a fortified wall across their sacred lands. Penny Boreham explores the power of ancient stories by taking three traditional tales and juxtaposing them with contemporary experiences and issues.
