We're frozen. Your Creeps have turned to ice, unable to meet together in person to record. So they gather using modern technology to talk about recent food they've managed to try on warmer days. This involves burgers and a lot of soup. We review tasty delights from our local favorites: soup options at Leonard's in Grafton, and salad and an enormous chicken sandwich from Onyx in Fairmont. Then, Matt tells of a very old cold case. He talks about the Wickenburg massacre, involving the murder of six during a stagecoach robbery in Arizona in the 1870s. They also discuss who was alleged to carry out the crime during the day, but also who might have been actually responsible, and the politics at play. They also talk about definitely eating food, small towns, fun appetizers, desert heat, and local dateline.

Recently I've been interviewing artists at various shows in front of various paintings for use on my podcast and for social media videos as well. I must admit, the information that flows from these creative minds while in front of their respective works is really amazing and different from what you'd hear from a normal podcast of mine. This episode follows this format and then some. With that in mind, I highly encourage you to watch the YouTube version if you can.You see, the first half follows western artist Howard Post through his retrospective exhibit "Western Perspectives" at the Desert Caballeros Museum in Wickenburg, AZ. Howard speaks on some of his greatest paintings, sharing information about technique, inspiration, and just artistic insights in general from across the board. It was really great to journey through Howard Post's artistic career with him beside me narrating and guiding me from painting to painting. The second half of this podcast is completely different, and a real treat. Howard and I went down the road to a roping event, also in Wickenburg. This part is great because Howard is a decorated rodeo athlete. He explained so many of the rules and the more nuanced parts of the event. Howard is a real cowboy painting real cowboy paintings and it's amazing to see this side of him up close in personal.Howard is an amazing artist and friend. This whole experience was such a joy, and being able to share it with you made it even better. This is Howard Post on Art Dealer Diaries episode 287.

Knight grew up on a working cattle ranch in the desert thirty miles from Wickenburg, Arizona, which at that time was exactly the middle of nowhere. Work, cactus and heat were plentiful, forms of recreation were not. The TV got two channels when it wanted to, and only in the evening after someone hand cranked the balky diesel generator to life. All of which meant that his primary form of escape was reading. At 18 he escaped to Tucson where he attended the University of Arizona. A number of fruitless attempts at productive majors followed, none of which stuck. Discovering he liked writing, the author tried journalism two separate times, but had to drop it when he realized that he had no intention of conducting interviews with actual people but preferred simply making them up. StoryFair is a platform with a mission: Put an end to author exploitation in the audiobook industry There's a problem in the audiobook business. A MAJOR problem. Did you know that when you purchase an audiobook on Audible, Amazon keeps as much as 75% of the cover price of the book? The average price of a major publisher/new release audiobook is in the $24 range. That means Amazon keeps at least $18.00… after fees, it's actually a little bit more. That leaves very little for the publisher, authors, and narrators to divvy up, and ultimately, it means that readers are by and large paying exorbitant audiobook prices to do one thing above all else… pad Amazon's pockets.   The introductory, end, and bumper music for this podcast (“Laser Groove”) was composed and produced by Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com and is Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

When people think of Phoenix, they probably first think of heat. This goes for both Phoenix the city and Phoenix the mythological bird, said to have risen from the ashes after dying in an explosion of flames. The fire bird and the sweltering city not only have heat in common but the the concept of rebirth as well. When Jack Swilling stopped here in 1867, he saw opportunity for growth and revitalization — if only water could be found. Inspired, he moved his canal company to the Salt River Valley from Wickenburg, and crops came soon after. This early move launched Phoenix's growth. Now it's the fifth-largest city in the United States. Who decided this city should be called Phoenix? And why? This week on Valley 101, a podcast about metro Phoenix and beyond, we explore the origins of Phoenix's name and the man who gets the credit. Historical fiction author, Karen Baney, recently branched into contemporary with The Air I Breathe and now with her new Vargas Ranch series.  Recently, Falling for a Real Cowboy released, and soon her Falling for a Shy Cowboy will release as well.  Listen in to how she came up with this series and why she branched out into cowboy romance. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you.   Listening to Karen describe Falling for a Real Cowboy and how she came up with the Vargas Ranch family story, the brand, the family motto--it's all amazing (and available on her website. Just sayin'). This book features a failing romance writer showing up in Arizona to learn about ranch life so she can write cowboy romance and... finding a romance of her own.  Then we chatted about her upcoming release, Falling for a Shy Cowboy, and the characters in there. A shy cowboy with a speech impediment, a prodigal best friend's sister, and that sister's disabled boy.   I fully expect to have a battered heart by the time I finish these. Just sayin'. Falling for a Real Cowboy by Karen Baney She's trying to resurrect her career. He's sworn off women. Will this city-meets-country duo find love where they least expect it? Dalton J. Vargas the fourth has sworn off love. Women are just a distraction that keep him from running his family's multi-million-dollar guest ranch near Wickenburg, Arizona. After his father announces an early retirement, the full burden of the ranch rests on his shoulders. When a city-slicker romance author stays at the ranch, Dalton's perfect world turns to chaos. River Sloane's last workplace romance novel flopped—big time. Now her publisher wants her to write a modern-day cowboy romance, which she has resisted for years. When her publisher sends her to a dude ranch in the middle of nowhere Arizona, she must learn about cowboys and ranching to get her career back on track. One hunky cowboy stirs her heart and unexpectedly becomes her muse. Will she let herself fall in love with the real cowboy or will she return to the life she left behind? Will Dalton open his heart to a new, lasting love? Find out more about Karen Baney on her WEBSITE and follow her on BookBub and GoodReads. In a picturesque and historic home nestled on the edges of Sonoita, we had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Tami Blakely. Her stunning property, complete with an expansive view and a pack of six Ridgebacks, set the stage for our conversation.Tami is a true Arizona native, hailing from a family with deep roots in the state—fifth generation, to be precise. Her family's journey began with the ownership of the only original general store in their area. Over time, they transitioned into the oil and gas industry, becoming prominent players in the Wickenburg, Arizona region as the state developed. Our introduction to Tami came through another guest on the show, Terri Malloy. We had the privilege of participating in a three-day equine therapy retreat at the Blakely Ranch, an experience that left a profound impact on us. Equine therapy, for those unfamiliar, is a powerful and transformative healing modality. It allows clients to communicate and connect with horses in profound ways, leading to personal growth and insights.Tami's role in this retreat was multi-faceted. First and foremost, she's a bona fide cowgirl, contributing a deep knowledge of equine interactions. Secondly, her coaching skills are top-notch, helping clients navigate their emotions and experiences during the therapy. The third, and perhaps most remarkable, attribute is her gift of sensing people's emotional states and the presence of things seen and unseen. Our conversation with Tami was nothing short of fascinating. She effortlessly responded to our questions, often revealing the answer before we finished reading them. Her personal story, while tragic and at times unimaginable in its hardships, has shaped her into the extraordinary person she is today. She's estranged from her family due to circumstances beyond her control, yet she's taken every life challenge and turned it into her life's purpose. Tami Blakely serves as a shining example of how to transform adversity into strength and purpose. Join us, Tami, and The Jar in this captivating episode that showcases the power of resilience and the human spirit. For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. Carol and I recently attended a lovely dinner party hosted by Abigail Sturges and other supporters of the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild. On its website, the Guild describes itself as “a vibrant center for arts and crafts in the beautiful and unique rural community of Woodstock, New York, while preserving the historic and natural environment of one of the earliest utopian arts colonies in America.”  Carol and I live in the Woodstock Byrdcliffe community and the beauty abounds whichever way you turn. I had the good fortune of being seated next to Katherine McKenna at Abigail's dinner party. Katherine is on the Board of the Guild and was Carol's painting and color Instructor at the Woodstock School of Art, which is a sweet coincidence. Katherine and her brothers Douglas, Andrew and Bruce grew up in Englewood New Jersey, and Carol was Bruce McKenna's 8th grade elementary school teacher. Small world. Katherine now divides her time between the Hudson Valley and the American West. Her landscape paintings of Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Arizona reveal an attachment to the natural geology and essence of place that she was first exposed to on the childhood trips she writes of in her memoir. Katherine has exhibited widely, and her paintings reside in permanent collections of the Rockwell Museum, the Museum of Northern Arizona, the Booth Museum, the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum, and the Desert Caballeros Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona Katherine also serves on the boards of Pratt Institute, the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, and the Arts Society of Kingston. Over dinner, Katherine told me of her father's work as a paleontologist, including at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and of her own field work out West with her father when she was very young. I was fascinated that her artistic journey started with what she was exposed to at a very young age, and what she learned at the side of her father. Katherine mentioned that she had written a memoir, which I then ordered from the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, and that we discussed on the podcast

Answer: They are steps from near to far in distance and in risk. It is a path to confidence and courage for your travel. You will improve your trip with each journey step if you are curious.  Start with accessible destinations and then more difficult ones. This guide gets you safely there and back home with a new confidence level. You'll be ready for the next step in the next trip.   Today's destination: Wickenburg, Arizona   Team roping capital of the world. What is team roping? One guy gets the head and the other the heel. Four arenas here, and anyone can watch.  Cowboys roping steers starts at the end of April and ends in April, except for some Gold Rush Days. Jackie works at the Ranch Dressing Store.  There is a Caballero Western Museum by the one traffic light in town. The museum will take 1-2 hours to visit. Memberships are available. In this episode, CAN+DID hosts Rikki Harris and Will Voss talk with Bill Fondren, who has Bipolar 2 Disorder, along with symptoms of anxiety, ADD, and OCD. Fondren is 52 years old, was diagnosed with BP2 at age 33, and believes that it first started affecting him when he was 18. But at age 18, Fondren says he couldn't articulate what he was experiencing. So, he just toughed it out. Fondren says he felt awful much of the time, but never became addicted to alcohol or drugs. He drank occasionally, but self-medicating was not an issue.Fondren was formally diagnosed in 2002 at a psych hospital/treatment center called The Meadows in Wickenburg, AZ. His experience at The Meadows changed the trajectory of his life. Fondren says he finally had a semi-firm grip on what was going on. Things haven't been perfect since his diagnosis, as he has continued to learn more about how his diagnosis affects him. But Fondren is able to tread water because he says he has a strong self-awareness, and his wife is quick to point things out to him.Fondren and his wife Mimi have lived in Nashville since late 1995. He has worked in radio off and on as a DJ, traffic reporter, and interview host. Currently, Fondren is doing voice-over work and writing a memoir on his mental health experiences. Today, he gets CAN+DID.
