Wilfred Owen wrote ‘Strange Meeting' in the early months of 1918, shortly after being treated for shell shock at Craiglockhart hospital in Edinburgh, where he had met the stridently anti-war Siegfried Sassoon. Sassoon's poetry of caustic realism quickly found its way into Owen's work, where it merged with the high romantic sublime of his other great influences, Keats and Shelley. Wikipedia says Bill Frisell “is an American jazz guitarist.” Well they got “American” and “guitarist” right. Frisell has indeed played jazz, but also country, rock, folk, West African, classical, and lots of less easily defined styles of music. Widely considered to be one of the great guitarists of our time, he is the subject of a new biography called Bill Frisell: Beautiful Dreamer. Among those who suffered untimely death in this period were three significant poets: Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke and James Elroy Flecker (although Flecker was not a casualty of war.) The fame of Owen and Brooke centres largely on their war-focused verse. While Brooke presents war as something of a thrilling, if dangerous "Boys Own" adventure - somewhat in the vein of the adventure novels of John Buchan - Owen's view is based on the gritty and soul-destroying reality of the trenches. Owen's output of finished work was very small: this collection of twenty-three poems contains most of the verse for which he is known today. Few poets have captured more effectively the tragic dichotomy of war, where, for many, survival can be a fate worse than death. The opening poem, "Strange Meeting" describes a posthumous encounter between a soldier and an enemy combatant who he has killed on the previous day. The penultimate poem, "Disabled," is the private lament of a crippled veteran as he helplessly surveys the daily lives of people unscarred by war.

Every age has a number of defining musicians, who stand-out for their innovations and distinctive voices. The front line trenches are nine miles off from here so it wont be a very long march. This is THE great effort to break through & end the war. The guns have been going deafeningly all day, without a single stop. We have to push through at all costs so we won't have much time in the trenches, which is great luck. Funny to think one will be in the thick of it tomorrow. One's first experience of shell fire not in the trenches but in the open. This is one of the advantages of a Flying Division, you have to keep moving. We marched 18 miles last night in the pouring wet. It came down in sheets steadily. They are staking a tremendous lot on this great advancing movement as if it succeeds the war won't go on for long. You have no idea what enormous issues depend on the next few days.
