Today’s interview features Svava Brooks. Having suffered sexual abuse, Svava’s early response to childhood sexual abuse was to become “Little Miss Perfect,” feeling responsible for everything happening in her environment, and attempting to hide any evidence that something could be wrong. She struggled as a young person to make sense of becoming a grown up while feeling so much self-loathing and shame. About 10 years into her healing journey, she realized that if someone had given her the words and language to speak up and ask for help, she probably would not have suffered into her adulthood. Now Svava is Abuse Survivor Coach, a Certified TRE® Provider, blogger & Author of best seller Journey to the Heart, 365-Day Guide to Thriving after Trauma. She is passionate about helping responsible adults learn how to talk about child sexual abuse in a direct and empowering way that creates awareness and confidence for adults that there is something they can do to keep kids safe.

Even with all the knowledge in the world, all of the awareness, the training, the therapy, you aren't immune to finding yourself in a spot where you just can't seem to get to the next step. You know how you want to feel, but actually getting to a place where you can embrace and actually live that feeling, is something totally different. That's why when I came across a recent article that my good friend, coach, and incredible advocate, Svava Brooks, had written, I knew I wanted to bring her back on the podcast so we could talk about it. Svava is a is a survivor of child sexual abuse and the co-founder of a nationwide child sexual abuse prevention and education organization in Iceland called “Blátt áfram.”  She is also a certified instructor and facilitator for Darkness to Light Stewards of Children, as well as a certified Crisis Intervention Specialist, a certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator, a BellaNet Teen support group facilitator, a Certified TRE® Provider, and an Abuse Survivor Coach. The mother of three children, Svava has dedicated her life to ending the cycle of child sexual abuse through education, awareness, and by helping survivors heal and thrive.  She is a certified facilitator for Advance!, a program created by Connections to restore authentic identity.  Every week she writes about healing after trauma on her blog, and also leads a discussion forum on Child Sexual Abuse Healing and Recovery online.  During our podcast together, Svava and I discuss that recent blog post, in a very in-depth and powerful way. As you'll hear when you listen, each step builds upon the other and each has a direct effect on the other as you move forward.  Being able to apply these principles in your own healing journey, and actually embody and live each one, is crucial to moving forward. The 7 steps to help you get unstuck and move forward in healing from trauma: -Establish Safety.  Figure out what makes you feel safe. This is your first priority. Develop Courage. Eventually, your willingness to heal will develop into courage, as you take more and more healthy risks. Create a Mindfulness Practice. Connecting with your body is essential for healing. As abused children, we learned the toxic skill of disconnection.  Mindfulness will help you reconnect. Express Your Emotions.  Learn how to identify, listen to, feel, and express your emotions in a healthy way. All of them: the good, the bad, and the ugly! Change Your Negative Beliefs. You created these toxic beliefs as a way to survive an abusive childhood. But you’re an adult now. Change your story (beliefs) to what benefits your adult life. Practice Self-Care, Self-Love, and Self-Compassion. Put yourself first on your To-Do list.  Every day, find a way to lovingly care for and celebrate yourself.  Build a Support System. You can’t do this alone. Healing doesn’t work that way. Surround yourself with nourishing friends who support your healing goals, and a safe place to practice your new way of thinking/feeling/being. You may still be saying to yourself, " but how do I apply these my life?" or "I've tried similar steps before but it just doesn't work" Check out the show and find out Svava's insight into all of these incredible steps! Art of Abundance with Leisa Peterson: Abundance Coaching | Belief Transformation | Wealth | Self-Realization

My guest, Svava Brooks transformed her early life challenges from pain into passion and from trauma into healing.  During today's conversation we talk about Svava's journey of healing from sexual abuse as a child and the stages she's gone through over the years to eventually start teaching others how to do the same.   The post AALP 189 – Releasing Your Authentic Self with Svava Brooks appeared first on Wealth Clinic.

EMOTIONS R US

I realize that what my step-father was doing to me every night was not normal. I covered my secrets and shame by being ‘Little Ms. Perfect’. Why didn’t someone save me when my mother could not--as she felt helpless. It is the adults job to empower children and teach them language of ‘speaking out’. What happens to a child who was not protected as adult survivor of a toxic life? How do they recover? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live your life as the awesome person you used to be before child abuse and trauma shattered your world? If so, Releasing Your Authentic Self: A Daily Guide to Help Child Abuse and Trauma Survivors Rediscover Themselves is the tool you’ve been searching for. Child abuse teaches you to hide the real you (your authentic self). The exercises in this book were designed to help you release that incredible part of yourself and begin this amazing journey of rediscovery! Svava Brooks is a survivor of child sexual abuse and the co-founder of a nationwide child sexual abuse prevention and education organization in Iceland called “Blátt áfram.” She is also a certified instructor and facilitator for Darkness to Light Stewards of Children, as well as a certified Crisis Intervention Specialist, a certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator, a BellaNet Teen support group facilitator, a Certified TRE® Provider, and an Abuse Survivor Coach. Donations are being accepted to help with the cost of providing Internet-based counseling, where therapists and clients connect over SKYPE. Info about the sold out event can be found at: www.Help4Guys.org. Following our broadcast, Bill Murray, himself a long-time adult survivor of child abuse and founder of the National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse (www.NAASCA.org), has been asked to appear as the main Keynote speaker for the Male Abuse Awareness Week fundraiser. We're delighted to accomodate, and look forward to more ON LOCATION broadcasts in the future.

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Svava Brooks, a native of Iceland who now makes her home in San Diego. A survivor of child abuse herself, Svava is determined to use the trials of her life to help others. She's a member of several groups, notably www.TAALK.org in San Diego, the non profit that seeks to "break the silence that surrounds child sexual abuse." Ms Brooks is also devoted to helping the children of her native Iceland. In 2004 she co-founding a group which stresses its not complicated to talk about child abuse: www.blattafram.is (which means "straight talk"). She also recommends the book "The Socially Skilled Child Molester," by Dr. Carla van Dam. Back in the US, Svava is also involved with the Darkness to Light organization (www.D2L.org) and, for the younger crowd, recommends the work of a puppet show troupe, The Kids On The Block (www.TheKidsOnTheBlock.com). Svava's passion for speaking about her childhood abuse and healing journey comes from knowing that she has given voice to many survivors to start their journey and break the silence. With her relentless compassion, she seeks to create a safe place for adults to come to terms with the fact, that they need to make better choices when it comes to keeping kids safe.
