In 1978, former first lady of the United States, Betty Ford, announced that she had an addiction to alcohol and prescription medication, and would be seeking treatment.Wife of the 38th US president Gerald Ford, her openness and honesty about her addictions was remarkable for its time and was headline news. But it was her daughter, Susan Ford, who had organised the family intervention to confront her mother about her addiction, prompting her to seek help. Susan Ford Bales remembers the moment she knocked on her mother's door early in the morning with the rest of her family and begged her to get help. Betty Ford would go on to establish the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California to help others struggling with addiction. Susan Ford tells her and her mother's story to Colm Flynn. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Betty Ford. Today we have an inside look into life in the Ford White House thanks to Bob Barrett's new book Inside the President's Team: Family, Service, and the Gerald Ford Presidency, which comes out January 7. In this book, Bob — who was one of President Ford's most trusted advisers — gives us a behind-the-curtain view of the Ford presidency as, second to Gerald Ford's wife Betty Ford, no one was closer to the president during his administration than Bob Barrett. Bob carried the “nuclear football” of the American nuclear codes, and literally couldn't let President Ford out of his sight. This led to a deep friendship with the First Family and gave Bob an inside look into the administration, which, born through President Nixon's resignation over Watergate, will always hold a unique place in history. In Inside the President's Team, we go inside the White House and inside the First Family in a way we've never really seen before. I want to pause here and say that I loved the insights on First Lady Betty Ford — you all know I love to study First Ladies, and she is one of my favorites. Inside the President's Team talks about why Ford decided to pardon Nixon for Watergate, and how he responded to criticism over his decision; what happened during the two assassination attempts on President Ford; and even about Betty Ford's intervention. President Ford was, as Bob puts it, “the most decent, honorable, trustworthy person I ever met.” Now, Bob actually passed away in 2022, so we have today on the show his son Nils Barrett to talk about his father and this remarkable book. We chat about how the Ford presidency already is remembered to history 50 years later and how it might be remembered 50 years from now; who both Bob Barrett and Gerald Ford were at their core; and how Bob continued serving Ford after his time in office ended, helping develop the Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Betty Ford Center for drug and alcohol rehabilitation in Rancho Mirage, California. Ultimately, this book celebrates living a life of service, and Bob himself served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Army and attained the rank of major. He worked at the United States Army War College as its Public Affairs and Communications officer and was offered the role of military aid to President Ford at the start of his administration — hence the nuclear football. I can't wait for you to get to know him through the eyes of his son.  Inside the President's Team: Family, Service, and the Gerald Ford Presidency by Bob Barrett

(she/her) who helps individuals and mission-driven organizations master resilience to stress, anxiety and trauma in order to have a more meaningful impact in the world in a culturally-sensitive, trauma-informed, body-based way. This conversation adds something that has been sorely missing on my show-  a global and systemic angle to money that has never been discussed before.Folks, a holistic, trauma informed conversation about money must include the various aspects of systemic and social traumas that impact how humans relate to money. "We can talk about what's happening on an individual level but if we're not also taking into account systemic trauma we can really cause a lot of harm to ourselves and the people we are serving.”This conversation also explores the idea of the exploitation of self, and our “inner colonizer” which is something I see a lot in myself and my clients.Felina and I also address the impact of human consumption on the climate, and the implications of consuming material objects on the global system, their cost on the environment and our wellbeing on the long run. We also bring up the idea of sufficiency and how important it is in our relationship to money as healers and coaches, as it pertains to our overall wellbeing, wealth and our collaboration with others. I hope you love this episode! Alta DeRoo, MD, MBA, FACOG, DFASAM, joins host, Zach, to talk about her experience in the US Navy (USN) and her path to practicing OBGYN and addiction medicine. She discusses the intersection of general medicine or primary specialty practice and addiction and shares her perspectives on stigma related to addiction. Dr. DeRoo explains the potential challenges of transitioning from active duty to veteran status and how these can sometimes lead to substance use, addiction, or mental health issues. Finally, she shares what inspired (and continues to inspire) her sense of service and offers advice to the next generation of addiction medicine specialists. Dr. DeRoo's father was active-duty Navy when she was born on Midway Island in the South Pacific. A sense of service was branded in her character, and after earning a BA in psychology from Connecticut College, she joined the Navy and served for 24 years. She was selected for combat Naval Aviation and was among the first cohort of women to fly in combat. Dr. DeRoo was the first female in her community of the E2C Hawkeye, a carrier airborne early warning plane. (They have a short cameo in Top Gun, but you would not see Mav flying her plane.) After 8 years of aviation and over 40 combat missions, Dr. DeRoo was awarded a scholarship to attend medical school. After graduating from the University of Florida College of Medicine, she completed residency in OBGYN. She completed several missions, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and 5 deployments on the USNS Mercy performing surgeries in Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and she was the mission commander of a Papua, New Guinea mission. Dr. DeRoo became very aware of the alcohol and drugs that sailors and soldiers used on deployment (for various reasons). Her father was also one of these sailors who eventually developed alcohol use disorder. From his stories and the stories of her shipmates and battle buddies, she became very interested in the science of addiction. Her Commanding Officer at the time allowed her to moonlight at a nearby methadone clinic, which was the beginning of her career in addiction medicine. Dr. DeRoo later became board certified in addiction medicine and practiced both OBGYN and addiction medicine. She retired from the USN to Culpeper, VA, where she started the county's first ever OBOT with their Community Services Board, started treating pregnant women with SUD, and incorporated this into a clinic in her town. Through aggressive naloxone distribution and OUD treatment, they were able to decrease their opioid overdose rate between 2016-2018. It was during this time Dr. DeRoo also became interested in the Virginia Chapter of ASAM. She served as secretary for two years, then president elect in 2020. The only thing that drew her away from serving as president in 2020 was a job opportunity that, to her, was a calling. She was asked to be the medical director of the Betty Ford Center and all California sites. She made dramatic changes there and was promoted to chief medical officer of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and their 16 sites across the US. During this time, she also earned an MBA from the University of Virginia and became a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM.   Virginia Society of Addiction Medicine (VASAM) American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation Distinguished Fellows of ASAM (DFASAM) If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, you are not alone. Does it seem like we are seeing more and more anger and rage lately? Do you or someone you know have issues with anger or managing emotions? Whether through road rage, yelling, political divide, or even outward violence, people seem more upset than ever. What's underneath it all? According to today's guest, Ian Brennan, anger masks fear, frustration, and sadness. As an author and expert in conflict resolution, today he discusses ways to help cool anger.  He has been involved with the Betty Ford Center as well as other addiction treatment places and also talks about how drug use and alcohol can compound the rage. Ian describes how some people are willing to injure themselves and others, or even willing to die, because of their unresolved anger. They may feel threatened. They may also be in denial. Many angry people deny that they are mad at all. Anger can cover up any type of fear. One way to begin to resolve the situation is to ask people how they feel. The more specific they can be, the better. An angry person tends to be more controlling, or even a perfectionist, as they want assurances. Those expectations can lead to tremendous disappointments. They may light up quickly. Surrender is a way to help – it's an acceptance of where things are. Frequent and brief conversations about emotions can help also to avoid outbreaks of rage. You can start by asking “What” questions, rather than “Why.” Begin by asking the angry person, “What happened?” then lead into “What do you feel?” When you intervene, these questions interrupt patterns. This can lead to constructive conversation and communication. It may help them to feel empowered and less controlled so they can offer information. You can also ask questions starting with “How,” such as “How can I help?” By using needs-based communication people can begin to feel heard. This can then lead to more solution-oriented conversations and help to diffuse the anger. Ian has taught classes on anger management for several decades and has brought his patented high-energy, lightning-speed delivery presentations to more than 100,000 people across the USA.  During his many years on staff in locked emergency-psychiatric facilities in Oakland, CA (the job rated as the most dangerous in CA for assault), his teachings spread by word-of-mouth until he was soon regarded as an expert on the topics of anger management, conflict resolution, solution-oriented communication, and violence prevention. In 2011 he published his first book, “Anger Antidotes: How Not to Lose Your S#&!.” Info: https://violenceprevention.us

This week Nicola and Di chat to the incredible story teller, Tim Olsen. Tim is one of Australia's most recognised and respected art identities, successful gallery owner and prize winning author. He is also the son of one of Australia's most famous artists, John Olsen.  In this episode, Tim shares what it was like living under the shadow of his father and how he had to fight hard to make a name for himself in the art world. He talks openly about the complex relationship he had with his father, the struggles they had, the disappointments, but ultimately the love and respect they had for one another and how they were all together the day that John died.  Tim opens up about how he used alcohol to cope with disappointments and trauma, and the slippery slope he started going down into alcoholism. He also shares his rock bottom moment and how he fought his way out of the hole and came out the other side, thriving. We hear some incredible stories about the time he spent in rehab at the Betty Ford Center and how Tim was one of the lucky ones.  We also hear about Tim's successful gallery, and why he can't stand when the art world is pretentious. He has a refreshing perspective about art, welcomes everyone in his gallery and wants to help anyone be able to feel a connection with beautiful art.  This conversation is a really beautiful one. Tim is open, honest, vulnerable and full of great stories about his life. He also shares lots of pearls of wisdom in this chat, so make sure you stay tuned until the end. We hope you enjoy listening to Tim as much as we enjoyed speaking with him.  Follow Tim Olsen on IG here Follow Olsen Gallery on IG here Find out more about Olsen Gallery here Buy Son of the Brush here Follow Nicola and Di on IG hereSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

About Johanna Dr. Johanna O' Flaherty, PhD, is an expert in crisis management from a psychological perspective, and a renowned expert in the field of trauma, addiction and recovery. She was the Vice President of Treatment Services at the Betty Ford Center from 2006 to 2013, before serving as CEO of the Las Vegas Recovery Center, Senior Fellow of Clinical Services, from 2013 to 2016. She is an Advanced Level Nationally Certified Addiction Specialist, a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), and a Certified Trainer for Critical Incident Crisis Debriefing Programs. She received her Doctorate of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in California. In addition, Dr. O'Flaherty adds her 40 years of personal recovery to her long list of accomplishments. Dr. O' Flaherty developed and implemented Crisis Response Programs for Pan American World Airlines, TWA Airlines, and has facilitated the training of Crisis Response Teams for several other airlines as well. In her role as Corporate Manager of Pan American Airways' Management of Employee Assistance Programs (EAP's), she was responsible for the oversight of bio-psycho-social-spiritual aspects of the 1988 Lockerbie disaster. This experience led her to become a pioneer in the aviation industry, organizing, training, and responding to aviation disasters, and facilitating trauma processing, grief counseling, and critical incident stress debriefing. In 1988, she also founded an educational program for chemically dependent women in Calcutta, India through Catholic Charities. In 1996, she provided counseling services to the family members of 230 individuals who perished in New York on TWA Flight 800, the third-deadliest aviation accident in US history. In 2000, she received the FBI's “Exceptional Service in the Public Interest” award. In 2001, Dr. O'Flaherty was again called to New York to assist with counseling airline employees and facilitating the Crisis Response training for the New York City Transit Authority after the terrorist attacks of September 11th. She has conducted critical incident response training for the FBI and first responders. At the time of this writing, Dr. O'Flaherty is providing counseling to the first and last responders of the October 1, 2017, massacre at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival on the Las Vegas Strip, at which 58 people were killed and another 546 injured. The incident is the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in the US and has reignited the debate over gun laws. She is the author of two previous books: “The Correlation Between Trauma and Addiction” (2014) and “Daddy Goes to Meetings” (2015). She maintains a consulting practice and an active schedule as a keynote speaker in crisis management and addiction. Dr. O'Flaherty has been featured on CBS, ABC, NBC and CNN as well as several podcasts as an expert in her field. Dr. O'Flaherty lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. Johanna's Social media and Website Facebook | LinkedIn | Website Johanna's Book My intention in writing this book is to share with you the story of my own trauma and the difficult, often circuitous and self-destructive path I took to acceptance, forgiveness, and love. First, tenuously, acceptance of those who had hurt me. Acceptance, in time, unfolded into forgiveness. The longer, harder path was to learn to love myself: it can be easier to love others than it is to truly love our own flawed, fragile selves. My hope is to show that suffering is not meaningless, and that, in fact, the very thing that brings us pain can, in time and with care, bring us a sense of liberation and purpose. I believe that inherent in suffering is an opportunity to transform pain and consciously use the experience as a progenitor of a new way of being, a new way of living, a new way of seeing the world, and perhaps being able to help others do the same. We are all unique individuals, many of us with deep wounds from our pasts. But we do not need to let those scars define, or defeat us. The shape of my life, including my career as a psychologist and specialist in community-wide crisis management, was imprinted on my psyche by traumatic events in my early childhood. My journey of self-exploration, of learning and deeply knowing myself, required, requires still, years of reflection and personal reckoning. Looking back at my formative years and experiences, my travels in search of spiritual meaning and comfort, and the arduous route to recovery from alcoholism, I know that all these elements in time formed my perspective, my work, and my very soul. While my life was filled with poor decisions and bad choices, my experiences created the tapestry of Me. Colored in hues dark and brooding alongside bright tones of lightness and hope, all threads twist and intertwine. I can no sooner disentangle this complicated tapestry now than I can predict its completion. Buy the Book Here

AARON CARTER: DEATH OF A POP STAR The death certificate for Aaron Carter has revealed that the late singer's body was cremated just days after he died. Andy Symonds, the co-author of Carter's controversial unfinished memoir — the publication of which has since been put on hold — wrote in the book that Carter had told him he struggled with taking Xanax and huffing canned air like Dust Off. According to Symonds, he wasn't doing either in 2019 as they worked on the book about the highs and lows of his life. Aaron Carter's memoir release date has been pushed back amid controversy from his friends and family. Aaron Carter's memoir delayed ‘out of respect' for his family The “I Want Candy” singer became famous at a very young age as he sought to stand out in his talented family, which includes his older brother Nick, a member of the Backstreet Boys. Carter opened for the Backstreet Boys in Germany at the age of 8. His “Aaron's Party” album was certified Triple Platinum when he was 12. He allegedly got into drugs at an early age as well. In his book, originally planned for publication on Tuesday, Nov. 15, he revealed he started smoking weed when he was around 11. He claimed he spent $30,000 on ecstasy one summer when he was 15. Carter said he dabbled in heroin, but quit it after getting sick. He also got into Xanax and said he took some from another patient while at the Betty Ford Center in Palm Desert — a trip he claimed Nick paid for because he was taking “more Xanax at that point than ever before.” It's unclear what Carter's relationship with drugs was when he died. Symonds said he last spoke with Carter in April 2021. Symonds said they met three times in person in 2019 and 2020 for the project. In the book, Carter describes some eerie bathtub moments. He recalled falling asleep in a tub as a young child star in need of a break. “I remember locking myself in the bathroom of one of our hotel rooms and falling asleep in the bathtub because I needed more sleep,” he wrote. “My mom broke down the door, afraid I was drowning in there.” He said shortly after his 18th birthday, he booked a trip to Amsterdam, where he overdid it with mushrooms. “I was all alone tripping, talking to the bathtub, watching the curtains, and having all these emotional highs and lows, seeing everything from rainbows to lightning,” he wrote. “I always overdid everything.” In the memoir, Carter claimed he was always suicidal, but never planned to actually do it. “I was always suicidal, especially through those years. I never attempted suicide, but never had anyone to talk to about it,” he wrote. “But I knew I loved life too much to actually do it.” Since his death, those close to him have offered tributes. He leaves behind a son, Prince, who turns a year old on Nov. 22. Prince's mom is Carter's on-again, off-again fiancée, Melanie Martin. INSERT PHOTO Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter says he got a restraining order against his brother Aaron after he allegedly confessed intentions of killing his pregnant wife and unborn child. His statement below In September 2019, Nick Carter filed a restraining order against Aaron after he made a series of disturbing comments about his older brother's wife and child. Nick said in a statement, "In light of Aaron's increasingly alarming behavior and his recent confessions that he harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child, we were left with no choice but to take every measure possible to protect ourselves and our family.” However, Aaron denied his brother's claims and said he hadn't spoken to him in years. Aaron Carter is a singer-songwriter famous for churning out tweenager-friendly music in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He hasn't aged gracefully. His latest public meltdown is one for the history books. When a celebrity's career is dying, they often flame out in a cringeworthy public meltdown. Aaron Carter's latest antics involve stealing artwork, bashing the artist when he complained, and then practically begging the artist to take him to court. Oh, plus he hates America for some reason? MJ Coke Aaron Carter's rep claims the singer NEVER told an entertainment reporter Michael Jackson gave him cocaine and alcohol when he was 15 years old ... and says the reporter COMPLETELY FABRICATED the story. The controversy stems from an article that ran in OK! Magazine in Australia, written by international journalist Daphne Barak. In the article, Carter was quoted as saying, "Yes, [MJ] gave me wine. I mean, I could have refused, but I was 15. As for drugs? He gave me cocaine." But Carter's rep tells TMZ, "Nothing was said that was reported" ... and directed us toward a YouTube video of the interview with Barak ... which seems to back up Aaron's side of the story. UPDATE: A rep for Barak tells TMZ, "Aaron Carter told Daphne Barak in his lengthy interview in Spain, that Michael Jackson gave him alcohol and cocaine while he was 15. He also said that Michael invited him to sleep in his room, and when Aaron woke up at 5:00 AM, he found Michael on his bed."

Most of the work is focused on healing the subconscious.  Ascension Psychology was designed from Dr. Pichard's extensive experience working with both patients and on her own self-empowerment journey. She found that western psychology could not get to some patterns that she wanted resolved in her life, and this, combined with an intense curiosity of wanting to get to the bottom of things, she began to explore more and more methodologies out of what is taught in the traditional classroom setting. In addition to earning a Doctorate of Psychology in 2012 and being a practicing Psychologist; some of the methodologies Dr. Pichard has trained in include: Matrix Energetics, Theta Healing, Peruvian and Hawaiian Shamanism, Forensic Healing, Berkeley Psychic Methods and Family Constellation Healing. She combines methods that she has found to be the most effective in lasting change, and she focuses on all 4 levels of the body (spiritual, mental, emotional and physical) and all 3 levels of the mind (higher self, conscious, and unconscious).  Dr. Pichard completed her post-doctoral training at the world- renowned Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, CA, where she was first exposed to combining energetic healing practices with western medicine. With her knowledge of mental health from the field of psychology and effective pattern changes from ancient traditional healing, Dr. Pichard is able to quickly find patterns that are negatively impacting you and use energy techniques to heal and shift these; freeing you to create the life you've been yearning for. Day 135 Today's Reading: 1 Corinthians 2 A friend of mine was just voted in as the new president of a Bible school in the Midwest. When I think of that school, I think of one of the most embarrassing things I did to appear impressive: I lied as I preached to them. I was supposed to speak to students who wanted to start a church, and because we'd just started ours in a very difficult spot in Detroit, they wanted me to talk about it. I not only wanted to speak about it, I wanted to be impressive. I rounded up the numbers—not so bad that they would be suspect, but enough that I would look awesome. As I was speaking, God told me, You just lied. Repent. I mentally responded, Absolutely. When I get back to the hotel. But God said that I needed to fess up right there. I can only anoint truth, He said. When you embellish, then your story no longer has Me in it. God cannot be part of anything that is not truthful. I went through all of this just so I could look impressive. How inauthentic I was being! One of the most amazing stories about authenticity is about former first lady Betty Ford. While her husband, Gerald, was president, she admitted that she was addicted to prescription drugs and that she was an alcoholic. That took a lot of courage to be that transparent—especially being the first lady of the United States. But as a result of her honesty, she got help and then was able to start helping many other people through her Betty Ford Center. All because she said no to be inauthentic. I like this anonymous seventeenth-century nun's prayer: "Lord, thou knowest me better than I know myself that I am growing older and will some day be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody's affairs. Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom it seems a pity not to use it all, but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They are increasing and love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of others' pains, but help me to endure them with patience. I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humility and a lessening cocksureness when my memory seems to clash with the memories of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint—some of them are so hard to live with—but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talents in unexpected people. And give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so. Amen." No one lived a better Christian life than the apostle Paul. He was authentic. He was real. I love Paul's honesty to the Corinthians. He was not trying to impress them. He was redirecting them to the One they should be impressed with: You'll remember, friends, that when I first came to you to let you in on God's master stroke, I didn't try to impress you with polished speeches and the latest philosophy. I deliberately kept it plain and simple: first Jesus and who he is; then Jesus and what he did—Jesus crucified. I was unsure of how to go about this, and felt totally inadequate—I was scared to death, if you want the truth of it—and so nothing I said could have impressed you or anyone else. But the Message came through anyway. God's Spirit and God's power did it, which made it clear that your life of faith is a response to God's power, not to some fancy mental or emotional footwork by me or anyone else. (1 Corinthians 2:1-5, MSG)

Our guest for Episode 32 had a rough start in life. Born with a heart defect and debilitating asthma, Leonard lost his father to a heart attack when he was just 3 weeks old. He grew up fast in Logan, PA, learning about being a man from the guys who hung out on the corner. His only real sense of stability was the home that he lived in for 20 years. He never really felt a sense of confidence until he started selling dope and then he felt like “the man” because he had the good stuff that everyone wanted. Leonard's first dabble with addictive behavior began with a pound of sunflower seeds and an upset stomach inside a movie theatre. Ironically, the last he used ended almost the same way, but this time he found himself sick and sweaty inside a phone booth in California. After a stint in rehab at the Betty Ford Center, Leonard emerged having lost the desire to use drugs and eventually, the desire to use alcohol as well. He has been sober ever since.Today, Leonard Lee Buschel is a California Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, the founder of Writers In Treatment, director of the REEL Recovery Film Festival & Symposium® and the editor/publisher of the weekly Addiction/Recovery eBulletin®. He also directs and produces the annual Experience, Strength and Hope Awards® in Los Angeles. Leonard Lee Buschel marvels that he survived the first 44 years of his life… He still can't believe that he didn't get knocked off by drug dealers, thieves or the copious amounts of drugs he himself ingested. Or locked up for life in a U.S. or international prison. And then again, there were the near-death asthma attacks, open-heart surgery and the brain tumor… Yes, it's a whale of tale—all true—that he writes in his acclaimed autobiography HIGH: Confessions of a Cannabis Addict. Buschel lived to tell about it with vast humor, thrilling storytelling, and great insight. He is an Addiction Expert and California Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. He is editor/publisher of the respected weekly news source Addiction/Recovery eBulletin, director of the 13-year-old REEL Recovery Film Festival and Symposium. and co-founder of Writers in Treatment, which supports creatives who struggle with addiction and self-destructive behaviors. But to get to that eminence, he first had to survive his profligate youth and his 25-year chosen profession as a drug dealer. Buschel's life started skidding off the rails just weeks after his birth, when his postal-worker father died of a massive heart attack on his way home from work, throwing what began as the idyllic family life of a middle-class Philadelphia Jewish family into a skid. Raised by his mother – herself a very quirky character — alongside his older brother, Leonard learned most of his life lessons at the corner candy store under the guidance of the local bookie and the a group of cigar-smoking, streetwise philosophers who thought nothing of buying hot merchandise out of the trunk of a car. Gradually, experimentation with pot and sex unleashed a nearly life-long addiction to both -- and what better way to support a cannabis habit than get into the business? Hijinks, adventure and near-disaster across international and state lines ensued, alongside explorations of the spiritual, metaphysical and psychedelic, oftentimes populated by personal encounters with the likes of poet Allen Ginsburg, Ram Dass, Jiddu Krishnamurti; a series of Woodstock headliners; and Hollywood luminaries including John Cassavetes, Gena Rowlands, Stacy Keach and others. And close friendships with Robert Downey Sr., in particular, and Robert Downey Jr. -- who were often there to lend support in challenging times. He spent much of his drug selling proceeds to see the leading jazz artists, rock music superstars and Broadway shows of the era—always living HIGH!. But finally, in his 50s, in the midst of an emotional breakdown over a shattered relationship, and after “smoking his breakfast, drinking his lunch and snorting his dinner” for many years, Buschel checked himself into the Betty Ford Center. It was hitting the lowest of the lows that so many addicts experience. It was time to see what a month would be like without vodka, weed or ecstasy. For Buschel, it was a revelation! Every moment he was struck by how alive he felt when not under the influence. For him, the power of the program there and at AA, worked wonders. He has now been clean and sober for more than two decades. And while he tinkered with several careers to replace his successful, but illegal profession, he finally found himself drawn to helping other addicts kick the habit and find a stable, healthy, robust sober life. Inspired by the work, he launched the eBulletin, film festival and organization Writers in Treatment, which he cofounded with Robert Downey Sr, that have made him a leader in the recovery field. HIGH is a fascinating read, a lively romp through a very vivid life, but it also a cautionary tale and one that inspires. If someone as committed to the drug life like Leonard Buschel can find a sobriety beyond 25-years of active addiction and drug dealing, than there is hope for those who are inspired by his message that there is a better life awaiting—and that they can do it, too. Here is his book. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1737926601/

The disease of addiction affects 1 out of 10 people in the United States, and is a devastating―often, fatal―illness. Now, from the physician director of the renowned Betty Ford Center, comes a step-by-step plan with a realistic “one-day-at-a-time” approach to a disease that so often seems insurmountable. With a focus on reclaiming the power that comes from a life free of dependency, Being Sober walks readers through the many phases of addiction and recovery without judgment or the overly “cultish” language of traditional 12-step plans. It also addresses the latest face of this disease: the “highly functioning” addict, or someone who is still able to achieve personal and professional success even as they battle a drug or alcohol problem. Dr. Haroutunian tackles this provocative issue head-on, offering new insight into why you don't have to “bottom out” to get help. Dr. Haroutunian is himself a recovering alcoholic and knows firsthand the challenges of sobriety. His background and expertise in the field of alcohol and drug treatment give him a powerful edge and perspective that is unparalleled in his field. Using clear, straightforward language, Being Sober offers a proven path toward emotional sobriety and a rewarding new life based on gratitude, dignity, and self-respect. Including a Foreword written by Steven Tyler. It's All About Changing Lives Dr. Harry earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University in Albany, New York. Have you seen changes in his or her behavior that are causing you to worry? Written by a family therapist, Parenting a Video Game Addict will give you the tools necessary to: Determine if your child might be addicted. Talk to your child about his or her video game use in a constructive way. Set solid limits and boundaries that actually work. Gently but effectively guide your child towards healthier activities. If you've tried everything and nothing has worked, it's time to use a different approach. Stop resorting to desperate attempts to change your child's behavior by yelling, lecturing, or threatening. Instead, follow the structured, consistent steps outlined in this book to see real results that last. Parenting any child brings many challenges, but parenting a child who has fallen under the spell of video games is a unique struggle. Most people can't do it alone or without guidance. Instead of banging your head against the wall and doing the same thing over and over, make a change in your approach that will make a lasting difference in your child's life, your life, and the wellbeing of your entire family. Jeffrey Munn is a licensed marriage and family therapist with over ten years of experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, and their families. His work has helped many parents navigate the difficult task of parenting with solid, consistent boundaries in a way that is effective but still loving and positive. In this episode, we continue our exploration of the application of the Brainspotting modality. Brainspotting is a modality discovered by Dr. David Grand. Please visit www.brainspotting.com to learn more. Our guest, Dr. Roby Abeles, discusses addiction and how the brain is wired for reward. She discusses some amazing processes that allow for overcoming addiction. We also explore post-addiction/post-trauma growth. We discuss how we can become better human beings as a result of positive post-addiction growth. Here are the six mantras from this episode: Mantra #1: There is no such thing as a perfect childhood (it is all about a spectrum of experiences). Mantra #2: You can bounce back from just about anything (and it is easier and can be more fully integrated with support from others). Mantra #3: The student can become the teacher. Mantra #4: You can be so much more helpful to others when you can be vulnerable and authentic. Mantra #5: When a person is feeling an addiction, their brain cannot neurologically connect (between the deeper reward centers of the brain) to the consequences of that addiction. Mantra #6: Given that addiction is a result of a lack of neural pathways in the brain (not a person having negative characteristics like a “lack of control”) we must work to remove shame around addiction in our society. Mantra #7: The brain is wired for reward. Mantra #8: Brainspotting can create new neural pathways in the brain to help people overcome addiction. Mantra #9: A healing journey can be seen along the same lines as the Hero’s journey (see Joseph Campbell’s 17 stages of the Hero’s journey). Mantra #10: When it comes to healing, including Brainspotting sessions, the most important person in the room is the client. More about Dr. Roby Abeles Dr. Roby Abeles is an accomplished integrative, somatic neuro-psychotherapist, with over 34 years of experience in diverse clinical, academic, government, and human services environments in Australia and the USA. Dr. Abeles knows the complexities of addiction through her own personal journey which began in utero. She was prescribed tranquilizers and anticonvulsants from ages 2-12, and by then she had already become addicted to several other substances. She is a survivor of several sexual and physical assaults during the active phase of her addictions. She entered rehab in 1985 and has been clean and sober ever since. Dr. Roby received her early addiction treatment training at the Betty Ford Center in California. She soon learned that addiction is always pre-dated by overwhelming life experiences. We are often not able to identify these experiences as “trauma”. And we were not able to process and integrate these experiences when they occurred. Dr. Roby’s own life experiences led her to a life-long study of trauma and addiction which continues today. She has co-developed the MATES Brain Regulation Program. ‘MATES’ is a simple and easy program to help people learn easy self-regulation techniques so they have alternatives to self-soothing with ritualized, compulsive (addictive) behaviors. She has also been trained in the revolutionary 21st Century brain-based Brainspotting (BSP) therapy and is an international trainer. Based on neuroscience, she developed a way to stop addiction cravings using a BSP technique called the “Crocodile Set Up”, and most recently has developed “The Hero’s Journey” BSP Set Up to transform adversity into a personal story of not just survival, but heroism. Dr. Roby Incorporates mind, body, and spirit into all her therapeutic work and teaching by combining Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing, Spiritual Psychology, Narrative therapy, and Ego State therapy, to ensure all levels of client experience are truly resolved and integrated so they can have a clear path forward. Degrees: PsyD in Clinical Psychology MA in Counselling Psychology MA in Spiritual Psychology BA in Chemical Dependency Counselling LINKS: The Crocodile Set Up http://thecrocodilesetup.com.au/ Brainspotting Australia Pacific http://www.brainspottingaustraliapacific.com.au/ For BSP trained therapists Facebook page Brainspotting and Addictions https://www.facebook.com/groups/1088689974585814/

This is not the usual guest I have on the show. I don't do celebrity interviews but when this guest's agent reached out to me I knew I had to interview him. Why? Because I had such a huge crush on him when I was a much younger girl! My guest is Michael Cole from the TV series The Mod Squad. As his book title says, "I Played The White Guy". ANd what a book it is. WHen I read the book to prepare for the interview I was surprised how candid and introspective the book was. As I read it I had so many questions I wanted to ask as what excited to get to interview him. Sometimes the crush isn't worthy of the crush when you get to "meet" them in person. That was not the case when I started speaking with Michael. The interview was everything I could have hoped for and so much more. No topic was off limits and Michael shared his journey to 23 years sober, finding redemption and how learning to make loneliness his friend created an opening for internal peace and joy and getting sober. It was great to "meet" my crush AND discover he is a wonderful man who wants his story to help others. One of my favorite quotes from his book and the interview is this one, "Make loneliness your friend. It will always be there." Michael Cole was born on the cusp of the Depression and the Second World War, on July 3, 1940, on the blue-collar side of Madison, Wisconsin. He never met his biological father, who abandoned his mother, brother Ted, and him when he was born. With no home of their own, they lived with his grandmother, in a house with no running hot water and a single commode in the basement. His “Ma,” Kathleen Hyland, whom he deeply loved, was forced to work several jobs to keep food on the table.  As a kid, Michael often ran the streets, wild and rebellious, pretty much on his own. He quit school in the ninth grade, and was married at seventeen, a teenage father of a beautiful baby girl.  The young marriage couldn’t survive the pressures, and ended after four years. Michael, an alcoholic by age thirteen, was alone and lost. He set out at the age of twenty, making his way to the streets of San Francisco, tended bar in Las Vegas, and then in 1963 moved to Los Angeles, where he joined the acting workshop of renowned coach Estelle Harmon.  Casting agents began to hear about his talent and he started to get work. In 1968, after guest shots in Gunsmoke and Run for Your Life, he landed the role of Pete Cochran in Aaron Spelling’s The Mod Squad. The show dealt with contemporary and controversial subjects—issues very close to Michael’s heart—racism, child abuse, Viet Nam veterans, and drugs. It became a smash hit, resonating with the counterculture of the times, and it made Michael an international celebrity. He was the recipient of four Logie Awards, Australia’s version of the Emmy Awards.  At the height of his success, Michael married Paula Kelly Jr., whose parents formed the famous musical group “The Modernaires." They had a daughter, but again, alcohol and Michael’s rise to stardom destined the marriage to failure.   In 1989, after years of isolation, despair, and the bottle, Michael met the woman who would change his life forever. With Shelley’s love and encouragement, Michael got sober. He completed the program at Betty Ford Center in 1994, and began to work again with guest starring roles on ER, Diagnosis Murder, Mystery Woman, and in Kevin Costner’s feature film Mr. Brooks. That said, Michael considers his greatest accomplishments his twenty-one-year marriage and his twenty-one years of sobriety.

Addiction: The Universal TerroristEpisode #2 of The Coaching Through Chaos Podcast on PriceofBusiness.com had me on the phone with Dr. Harry Haroutunian. Known simply as “Dr. Harry”, he is the Physician Director of The Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California. He is a “rock star” of addiction medicine to the rock stars and anyone else who comes through their doors. This article will cover information regarding the prevalence of addiction problems in the United States, my tour of the Betty Ford Center prior to this interview, information gathered from my interview with Dr. Harry and resources for addiction support.Addiction is a terrorist of the worst kind because it does not discriminate. No one is safe from it and once addiction attacks, recovery and rebuilding from the aftermath can take years. The person affected, and their relationship to themselves and their loved ones, is never the same.SAMHSA (the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. The following are some highlights from  the SAMHSA 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health  (published September 2014).In 2013, an estimated 24.6 million Americans aged 12 or older (12% of the population) were current illicit drug users. Current in this survey means they have used illicit drugs within the past 30 days. Illicit drugs include “marijuana/hashish, cocaine (all forms), heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, or prescription-type psychotherapeutics (pain relievers, stimulants, tranquilizers, sedatives) used non-medically”.Marijuana was the most commonly used drug in 2013. It was used by 80% of the illicit drug users at the time of this survey. The numbers for overall use of illicit drugs have stayed relatively the same over recent years but are slightly higher regarding almost all the illicit drugs from 2005-2009.The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the following statistics:Approximately 30 people die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes. The annual cost associated with crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers is $59 billion dollars.Excessive drinking was responsible for 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults aged 20-64 years. The economic costs of excessive alcohol consumption in 2006 (most recent data reported) were estimated at $223.5 billion.Every day, 44 people in the U.S. die from overdose of prescription painkillers, and many more become addicted. From 2001 to 2013 there was a 2.5-fold increase in the total number of deaths from misuse or overdose of prescription medications. Those are outrageous numbers!  Statistics can be overwhelming, so I won’t fill you up with more. The above were featured to give you a basic frame of reference for how pervasive this problem is.  You can find some links to help you educate yourself further abut the data collected by both the CDC and SAMHSA in the resource section at the end of this article.Prevalence of Addiction Problems in the United StatesMy Tour of Betty Ford Center  Prior to our phone interview, I had the privilege of participating in The Betty Ford Center’s invite-only “Visiting Professionals Day”. The campus is the size of a community college campus and is in a lovely setting behind a larger medical facility. We were accompanied on the tour by program heads and other staff educating us about all the programs The Betty Ford Center has to offer. These include a state-of-the art Clinical Diagnostic Evaluation Program, a Professionals Program, a Residential Rehabilitation Program, Sober Living homes and a summer program to train medical professionals in addiction. In addition they also have a world-famous Family Program and Children’s Program.Yes, the Betty Ford Center also has a Children’s Program. No, this is not for children who are addicted, although through their recent merger with the Hazelden Foundation, treatment programs for adolescents are available. The Children’s Program is for the children of addicts and alcoholics. Children can attend even if their parents are not patients of the Center. It is a 4-day program in which they can get help to unload the burden of the emotions and secrets they carry when they have an addicted family member. The program is designed to help the children adopt a language for their emotions and to help them understand addiction in terms they can understand. Several of the children attend on scholarship. The Center takes pride that “no child has ever been turned down for financial reasons”.My Interview with Dr. Harry As the Physician Director of the Betty Ford Center, Dr. Harry has been a central figure in the development of a variety of programs at Betty Ford Center including the Extended Care Program, the Licensed Professionals Program and the Clinical Diagnostic Evaluation Program. He is an internationally known speaker in the addiction field. He has a Recovery Lecture Series and is the author of “Being Sober: A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting To, Getting Through and Living in Recovery” (2013).During the podcast interview, Dr. Harry speaks of the Licensed Professionals Program and the Clinical Diagnostic Evaluation Program (CDEP). The CDEP is one of the most comprehensive assessment programs I have ever heard of. It is designed to determine if a person does in fact have a substance use problem. This is done through a 5 day interview and assessment process with the substance user. In addition to contact with the person in question, they interview pretty much anyone the prospective patient has contact with: friends, relatives, old roommates, etc. (Of course, the prospective patient has given permission for this to happen.)Blood, hair and urine samples are collected and if necessary polygraph testing can also be administered. You may wonder why someone would go through all this. If they are at the doors of the Betty Ford Center don’t they already know they have a problem? Well, sometimes it’s not so clear or they are not seeking treatment of their own volition. For example, they may be a pilot or a medical doctor referred by their employer after receiving a DUI. This Clinical Diagnostic Evaluation can also help a person accept that they do, in fact, have a problem. If it is determined they do not have a problem, appropriate referrals can be made if there are other factors causing the person to appear in need of help (i.e. sometimes a medical condition can cause symptoms which mimic intoxication – disorientation, slurred words, etc.). If a person is diagnosed with a Substance Use Disorder and chooses to stay and accept treatment at Betty Ford Center, the cost of the evaluation is absorbed into the cost of treatment. That can be a helpful fact to know when factoring in the cost of treatment.Recovery ResourcesOf course, you can seek help at Better Ford Center or at one of their affiliated  Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation programs or call 866-831-5700.Dr. Harry’s book: Being Sober: A Step-by-Step guide for Getting To, Getting Through and Living in RecoveryThere are many resources to support patients in recovery or for support when you love someone who is struggling with addiction.
