Given the explosion of companies looking to hire talent from non-EEA countries, which is resulting in higher usage of employment permits, Shannon Chamber joined forces with professional services firm Deloitte to give its members an overview of the employment permits system, the changes coming on-stream, and the challenges companies face when recruiting globally. The briefing, held in the Shannon Airport House, was both timely and beneficial. It followed the publication of the results of a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) survey undertaken by Deloitte in 2024 which found that retaining and attracting skilled talent is regarded as a key business risk, with 95% of CFOs polled stating they are very or moderately dependent on non-EEA nationals to fill their skills gaps. This, coupled with the fact that the Irish labour pool is tightening, with skills shortages evident in sectors such as science and technology, information technology, business and finance, healthcare, and social care, has resulted in almost 40,000 employment permits being issued in 2024. Given that employers are continuing to look at alternative talent and skills pipelines, the number of employment permit applications is likely to increase year on year. As stated at the briefing, managing compliance along with supporting onboarding to attract and retain talent is becoming critical for companies growing diverse talent pools. The presenters, Roisin Fitzpatrick, partner, and Kim Wong, director of Immigration Services with Deloitte, delved into their expert bank of knowledge to give attendees a full appreciation of the key considerations they need to factor in when hiring talent from outside the EEA. Covering topics such as eligible and ineligible roles for employment permits, right-to-work checks on employees, inspections by the Workplace Relations Committee (WRC), graduate programmes, and remuneration thresholds, attendees were advised that before their embark on any non-EEA national recruitment programme, they should be aware that an employment permit will not issue unless at the time of application at least 50% of the employees of the employing company are EEA nationals (which includes UK nationals and Swiss nationals), with a small number of exceptions. They also heard that applications can be rejected if any documents associated with the application are missing. As stated by the presenters, immigration permissions have different stamp numbers (0 to 6, with variations), with each number signifying what the permit holder is allowed to do and whether they are permitted to work. Attendees were advised to familiarise themselves with these permissions. Already aware of recent changes to employment permissions, such as a non-EEA employee's right to move employer after nine months while remaining on the same employment permit they held on arrival in Ireland, many companies, including Shannon Chamber, have made submissions to government voicing their concerns with current and proposed changes, including salary thresholds, and are awaiting the outcome of this review. Speaking after the event, Chamber CEO Helen Downes said that the briefing was delivered at a time when an increasing number of member companies are in recruitment mode in non-EEA countries. "The wheels of business must continue to turn. When companies cannot meet their skills requirements locally, nationally or in EU countries, they need to look further afield. That's why a comprehensive briefing on all aspects of employment permits was so important. There is nothing better than hearing it directly from the experts, and I know that many of our member companies will connect further with the Deloitte team. I am so motivated to do this because I never had any career guidance at any point in my life. After five years of working as a product design consultant, co-founding some businesses, and a master's degree, I haven't resolved what I want to do with my career, so I am very happy to be building an EA community in my country while I engage with the 80,000 HOURS book online and in person. I am also being mentored by Felix Lee, co-founder of ADPList, which is great because I can learn from his experiences going from being a product designer to his mission to solve many shortcomings of the current education system that hinder the choice to pursue potential career paths. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has been marked down in history, following his impeachment through a nail-biting vote by the House of Representatives. This is the first time a cabinet member has been subjected to the impeachment process in more than a century. Several members of the Republican party blame Secretary Mayorkas for an unmatched wave of immigrants at the US-Mexico border. The push for impeachment was led by Republicans in the House, culminating in a tense vote tally of 214 in favor versus 213 against. This successful vote follows an earlier attempt to impeach the Secretary that fell flat. With the House's decision, the process will now proceed to the Senate for an impeachment trial. The opposing sides of the vote were predominantly divided along party lines - of the total, 210 Democrats voiced their opposition to the impeachment action. The Democrat tally was supplemented by dissent from three of their Republican colleagues: Tom McClintock hailing from California, Ken Buck of Colorado and Wisconsin's Mike Gallagher. This trio of Republican 'defectors' also rejected the preceding attempt to impeach Secretary Mayorkas. Yet, the need for tighter border control remains a polarizing topic for the populace. Since the commencement of 2021, unauthorized entry into the US by more than 6.3 million migrants has fueled politically charged debates, especially as the November election looms. Critics of the current administration, under President Joe Biden, have taken issue with Secretary Mayorkas, claiming he falls short of his sworn commitment to 'well and faithfully discharge the duties' of his office, particularly where border security is concerned. These claims are vehemently rebuffed by Democrats and by members of the Biden-led administration. Throughout a pair of hearings in January, Republicans, obstinate in their stand, held Secretary Mayorkas responsible for his perceived negligence in implementing existing immigration policies, and for his alleged misrepresentation of the security conditions at the border. Worth noting, however, is that the Secretary did not present any testimony at these hearings. Earlier, an initial try at impeaching the Secretary was narrowly unsuccessful, falling short by the count of three votes. These votes belonged to Republicans Ken Buck, Mike Gallagher, and Tom McClintock, each of whom opted against the impeachment. A unique occasion arose when Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas made his surprise appearance at the chamber, clothed in hospital attire, so as to cast his vote against the impeachment. Earlier, he had been rushed into an emergency room for surgical procedures. Nevertheless, his commitment to his assembly responsibilities became palpable. The scenario this Tuesday, however, revealed a different setting from the House Majority Leader, Steve Scalise's point of view. After an absence due to ongoing cancer treatment during the last vote, Scalise rejoined the plenary session, thereby providing the Republicans with the impetus they needed for a successful impeachment vote. Outlined within the pages of the US Constitution is the impeachment process - marking the initial step towards the expulsion of a federal official due to high crimes or misdemeanors. The impeachment ride can be arduous, requiring a simple majority in the House comprising 435 members, and an even more challenging two-thirds majority in the Senate, which houses a 100-member assembly. While this hurdle of securing a majority in favor has been surpassed in the House, the journey of impeachment is far from over. The middle ground of the Senate shall be a challenging terrain given its Democrat majority, which is expected to vote against the impeachment of Mayorkas. The most recent case of a cabinet secretary facing impeachment was William Belknap, the then Secretary of War, in the year 1876. Though he resigned prior to the commencement of the vote, the echoes of that historic event resonate with the unfolding of current events. Alongside this political tension, the American public's concern continues to be amplified with respect to the immigration issue and, more specifically, the handling of border control by the administration. Research conducted by CBS in January - a US partner of the BBC - indicated that approximately half of the US citizens consider the situation at the border to be reaching crisis proportions. Moreover, this research surfaced that the public sentiment favors stricter immigration--63% of those surveyed proposed that the current administration should incline towards 'tougher' policies. In conclusion, the vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the ensuing allegations, and the consistent increase of migrants at the U.S. border, illustrate the high-stakes contentiousness of today's political scene. Yet, it is democracy in action, that continues to validate the essence of America, even amidst its contentious discourses. The event aimed to foster appreciation for veterans from various conflicts and educate younger community members about the importance of Veterans Day. Veterans from Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq were present. Activities included live music, children's booklets about the military, scavenger hunts, and bounce houses designed like an aircraft carrier and a tank. An F-4 Phantom jet fighter cockpit simulator provided by the Aviation History and Technology Center allowed visitors to experience flying an aircraft using instruments. STORY 2: Smyrna's 'Her-story' Outlined in Lecture Local historians in Smyrna, Georgia, highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of women in the city's history. Women in the 19th and 20th centuries in Smyrna faced the "separate spheres philosophy," which limited their roles in society. Despite these constraints, women played significant roles in civic, educational, and philanthropic life. A significant challenge in documenting women's contributions is the lack of recorded information about them, especially Black women. The court provides an 18 to 24-month drug treatment option as an alternative to incarceration. To graduate, participants must achieve a 90-day clean screen, meet treatment and case management requirements, give back through community service, secure housing, and gainful employment.
