Content warning for suicide starting at 15:45 and 26:23.Well, here we are again at another season finale. Sometimes I find it hard to accept that Ostium has had six seasons, but then I think about how much more story there is to tell and I just get so excited about what's to come. And for reference, we're at the halfway point in the Ostium narrative right now. At least for this series, but that's all I'm going to say about that. I know it took a long time to get this whole season out to the world and I would like to thank everyone for their patience in that. There's a lot going on in the world right now, both in the public space and in our private lives, and sometimes there are delays we can't avoid. So thanks again for sticking around. I would also like to thank the incredible people I have working for me in Team Ostium. Thank you to Chris, Georgia and Emily. I'm very excited to see where our story goes next. Thank you to Mike Nye, a true magician when it comes to sound design. You turn words and dialogue into magical stories that come to life. Couldn't do it without you, mate! Dr. Emily Wang from the Yale School of Medicine was named a 2022 “MacArthur Genius.” The Chicago–based foundation recognized Wang for her research on health barriers for incarcerated people transitioning to the community, and for her work at the Transitions Clinic Network, which she co-founded. The clinic provides healthcare to people transitioning to civil society, often with chronic unmanaged health conditions. According to Marlies Carruth, Director of MacArthur Fellows, MacArthur Fellows are “architects of new modes of activism, artistic practice, and citizen science. They are excavators uncovering what has been overlooked, undervalued, or poorly understood. Their work extends from the molecular level to the land beneath our feet to Earth's orbital environment—offering new ways for us to understand the communities, systems, and social forces that shape our lives around the globe.” This hour on Where We Live, we hear from Wang and her fellow researcher Dr. Lisa Puglisi, who heads the Transitions Clinic, on the struggles that formerly incarcerated people face to access healthcare. Access to health care is a constitutional right for the 2 million Americans in our criminal justice system. For some of those incarcerated – overwhelmingly people with low income and people of color – the first time they receive care is behind bars. But when individuals transition back into their communities, this care often vanishes. On the latest episode of The Dose, Emily Wang, M.D., director of the SEICHE Center for Health and Justice at Yale University, explains why we need to ensure continuity of care for people cycling in and out of the criminal justice system. The first few weeks after release are critical, she says. “You want people to return home to reintegrate… to reestablish a life, get a house, get a job, contribute meaningfully as a member of our community.”

Most mental health challenges begin in childhood, the teen years, or young adulthood. It's a burden young people and their families don't have to face alone, yet too often, they do. "One in five young people under age 18 has a serious mental health issue at any one time," says Steve Adelsheim, MD, director of the Stanford Center for Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing and clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. "But 80% of those who need care don't access care." Stanford and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital are responding to this mental health crisis with a continuum of innovative, research-backed services—including programs aimed at prevention, early intervention, and reducing the stigma and access issues around mental health. “Our young people know what they need. They know what their challenges are, and have a great deal of wisdom about how to build connections with other young people and how to create spaces that young people will want to use.”  How might we co-create a more accepting culture and de-stigmatize mental health concerns for youth? In today's environment, mental health is so important, and intervention starts early. Researchers and practitioners like Dr. Steven Adelsheim, clinical professor and associate chair for community engagement, believe that involving youth in the process of creating interventions is so key to be successful. Allcove is a space for youth to find community, support, advice or even just a moment of pause. In this conversation, Dr. Adelsheim and Youth Advisory Group member, Emily Wang, discuss some of the mental health concerns for youth today and how schools are addressing mental health, the current state of allcove, as well as some of the reasoning behind why it was created.

Expand your knowledge about how--and how well--we manage the health of incarcerated patients in the United States, with the expert knowledge of correctional health experts Drs. Aaron Fox @adfoxmd, Jon Giftos @JonGiftosMD, and Emily Wang @ewang422. Correctional medicine is a black box for many providers who do not work in prison and jail settings. But it’s ever more relevant to primary care physicians everywhere, with increasing rates of incarceration the last decade.  In this episode, recorded live at SGIM 2019 #SGIM19, Dr. Fox, Dr. Giftos, and Dr. Wang talk us through the variability of the correctional healthcare systems throughout the country, the challenges to health for patients both while incarcerated and in the transition after release, and some essential nuts and bolts for providers about how to provide better care to this vulnerable population.   Full show notes available at https://thecurbsiders.com/episode-list.
