Numbers 22:22-35 In this strange and memorable story, a donkey sees what a famous spiritual seer cannot. Yet the real wonder is not the talking animal, but the sovereign God who rules both the visible and invisible world, restrains human foolishness, and faithfully accomplishes His purposes. While Israel remains completely unaware of the danger around them, God protects His people, keeps His promises, and turns an intended curse into blessing. This passage reminds us that our greatest assurance is not our ability to understand or control everything, but God’s unwavering faithfulness, ultimately revealed in Jesus Christ.

Numbers 22:22-35 Some texts in Scripture are confusing, others troubling, and some just seem silly. A talking donkey? That falls in the latter category. But the message is serious: God uses messengers of His choosing – vessels that the world may label as foolish, weak, and despised – to speak His words, and His words only – words of blessing. This blessing, ultimately found in Christ, has been given to His people now – the church – to continue the blessing of Abraham to all nations.

Anchor Passage: (Numbers 22-25)The story of Balaam—a pagan prophet who says the right things outwardly, but really seeks personal gain and power—is referenced three times in the New Testament. His heart is set against God's people, even after God miraculously uses a talking donkey to offer correction. One of the strangest stories in the Torah is when Balaam decided to go and curse Israel but G-d sent obstacles to disuade him from going. Strange Stories - Same God

"What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?" In one of Scripture's most unusual narratives, a donkey sees what a prophet cannot. Balak king of Moab hires Balaam to curse Israel, but God intervenes in spectacular fashion. The prophet's own animal rebukes him, and an angel bars the way. In this chapter, we encounter the danger of those who use religion for profit and the surprising ways God protects His people from threats they never even see.  The Rev. Today, we explored this question as part of our 'Perplexing Passages' mini-series.

In this episode, we explore the biblical story of Balaam and his talking donkey, emphasizing how God often speaks through unexpected sources. It challenges listeners to be more attentive to God's presence in their daily lives, even in ordinary or strange circumstances.

Send us a textKing Balak hires the prophet Balaam to curse Israel, but God says Balaam may only speak His words. On the road, Balaam's donkey sees an angel with a sword and swerves three times to keep him safe. Balaam cannot see the angel and gets angry, even hitting the donkey, until God lets him see what the donkey saw all along. Humbled, Balaam goes to Moab and, instead of cursing, blesses God's people again and again because no one can turn God's blessing into a curse. Reading the story of Balaam, one wonders why it is included in the Torah. Why didn't God simply forbid Balaam from going to Moab the second time he asked? It turns out that Balaam gets mentioned as a bad example all the way from Deuteronomy to Revelation. In this, he serves to emphasize that sex is very often the hook that is used to draw people away from God and in to idol worship.

You may be expecting to see the name of Balaam in this description and we'll get there, but first let's head to the pool for a moment.You are likely familiar with signs or painted words that direct us to walk safely and not run around a pool. The purpose is to protects us from pain and injury.If a lifeguard sees someone running, it's his job to intervene. He may speak a warning with the volume determined by distance and the noise level. If necessary, he may blow his whistle. The whistle demands our attention, disrupts our flow, and alerts us to danger. God can work in a similar fashion.Enter Balaam. Israel is winning battle after battle led as they are by Yahweh, the God of Israel. They are camped in the Moabite region, across the Jordan river from Jericho. The promised land is just around the corner, the people are about to see the promise God made to Abraham and Jacob fulfilled. But there is one King who is not happy. One King is hoping to stop their advance with a curse delivered through a mysterious prophet named Balaam, who says he talks to Yahweh on a regular basis, and who promises to be able to divine the very mind of God.
