During his first few months in exile on the island of St. Helena, Napoleon Bonaparte spoke at length to his confidant, Emmanuel, comte de Las Cases. Their conversations were later published as a book, revealing a side to Napoleon that the public had never previously encountered. Rabbi Dunner draws on one oft-cited quote from de Las Cases' book, and finds a parallel in the first daily Jewish prayer - a verse in Parshat Balak.

From a prophet-for-hire, to a talking donkey, to an invisible angel, Parshat Balak sports quite the interesting cast, but all these characters seem to be one hit wonders. It seems like Parshat Balak is almost entirely unrelated to the rest of the Torah and the Torah would be perfectly complete without it. But what if Parshat Balak is really the sequel to a much earlier story in the Torah?Join Rabbi David Fohrman and Tikva Hecht as they follow a road from Balak all the way back to the Garden of Eden. What did you think of this episode? Rabbi Cohler-Esses' sermon addressed the Kabbalistic notion of small mind and large mind -- "mochin de-katnut and mochin de-gadlut" -- and shows how Bilaam, the Ancient Near Eastern prophet, is given lessons by his donkey, by God, and by the wilderness about what it means to make the shift from a narrow to a more expansive consciousness.

Parshat Balak: The Sacrifices of Balaam - English only. The prophet Balaam wanted the Almighty to curse the Children of Israel. The prophet offered sacrifices, hoping to persuade God to assist in the evil plot. God rebuked the Balaam, however. The story illustrates one of the most fundamental teachings in all of The Scriptures!

Parshat Balak - The antidote to the vile idolatrous practice of Pe'or through the eyes of Rav Kook
If Bilaam is really so bad, that brings us back to our original question - what is he doing in the Torah? What are we reading this bizarre story at all???

If Bilam received prophecy on the same level as Moshe Rabbeinu, why did he live such a debased life?

Parshat Balak includes one of the most unique stories in the entire Torah, a story that the Talmud thought should be read every day. Why is it so special? Take Ten to find out. This Ten is ponsored by the Braunstein family in memory of Marie Dweck a”h, Miryam bat Mordechai HaCohen.

Torah Class - Parshat Balak: G-d's Secret Logic Why do bad things happen? Are catastrophes G-d's retribution for our sins?
There's something unusual about Parshat Balak. It's the only parsha in the Torah where the Jewish People, the “stars of the show” seem to only have a “walk-on” part. We see Bilam and Balak close up as they plot to destroy the Jewish People, but Israel is only seen in the background – almost off-camera. Why is this? In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band “Foreigner” (1976).
