Ep. 53 - What did you see, that you did this thing?

Abraham and Sarah arrive in Gerar, and Abraham tells everyone Sarah is his sister. She is, technically: his half-sister. She is also his wife (and one of the 4 most beautiful women ever to live). So when King Abimelech hears there's an unmarried woman in town, he has her brought to his palace. That night G-d appears to Abimelech in a dream with a warning: give her back or you die. By morning the orifices of his entire household are sealed shut, and he summons Abraham with one question, “What did you see, that you did this thing?”Abraham's answer is that there is no fear of G-d in this place. Rabbi Epstein calls it the crux of the whole passage, and he reads it as a direct challenge to a man who thinks of himself as righteous. If you decide for yourself what righteous means, you will never be righteous. Then comes a puzzle. This is the second time Sarah has been taken. Twenty-four years earlier, Pharaoh took her too, and G-d struck his household with a painful skin disease. Abimelech gets something else entirely. Same woman, same offense, different punishment. Why would G-d change it? Rabbi Epstein's answer comes from a teaching in the Talmud, and it changes how you read what happens to Abraham and Sarah next.

The last day of Moshe's reign, coincided with the first day of Joshua's reign. For one day, Moshe and Joshua led the nation together as co-heads. On that day, Moshe and Joshua together conveyed the exquisite, comprehensive sound of Haazinu. A song that spans everything: the past, the present, the future, this world, the world to come. A song that encapsulates all of Torah, a song that foretells all future events. Not all stanzas though scream joy. Not all of what we read does not evoke ecstasy. Not all of what we read inspires us to dance. We read about the nation going astray - Jeshurun growing fat and corpulent and rebelled against God. We read about the disastrous consequences of what happens to us when God turns away from us. We read a frightening and chilling account of the condition of our people in exile. Yom Kippur is a day of atonement and expiation. On this auspicious day, the Almighty forgives us for all our transgressions and we become purified before God. But the purification of Yom Kippur is limited to sins between man and God. For interpersonal transgressions, there is no atonement unless the aggressor appeases and secures forgiveness from the aggrieved. In this sweeping episode we discuss the nature of interpersonal transgressions and the tremendous sensitivity and delicateness required to not cause another person pain or loss; we scour the process of how to gain atonement for interpersonal transgressions; and we talk about the importance and the challenge of forgiving others who have wronged us.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Abraham tells the people of Gerar that Sarah is his sister, the second time he's made this claim about her. King Abimelech then takes her into his house, and that night G-d comes to him in a dream with a warning: return her, or die. Abimelech wakes up to find his bodily orifices sealed shut, and he asks Abraham “what have you done to us?”Rabbi Epstein and Tom dig into whether Abraham actually lied when he claimed Sarah was his sister. That question opens into a teaching from Rabbi Eliyahu Dessler on emet and sheker, the two Hebrew words usually translated as truth and falsehood, and the cases where the honest thing to say isn't the same as the accurate thing to say.

Parshas Hazinu is one of the most fascinating, poetic, and richly profound Parshas in the Torah. It is also arguably the most mysterious one. The majority of the Parsha is the Song of Haazinu, an intricate tapestry of prophecies that encapsulate the grand scope of Jewish history. The commentators on this Parsha strive to even understand the basic meaning of its words. In this penultimate episode of the 8th cycle of the Parsha podcast, focus on the commentary of the Ohr HaChaim. While we don't go through the entirety of his magisterial commentary, we select five magnificent comments from this work. What we discover is an absolutely profound study of scope and depth and insight. I could think of know no finer way to end the Parsha podcast year of 5784 than to plumb into the depth of this song as explained by the legendary Ohr Hachaim.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Still in the final day of Moshe's life, he conveys to the nation a 43-verse Song predicting the contours of Jewish history, both past, present, and future. The patterns are familiar to the readers of Deuteronomy and even casual observers and students of Jewish history: The nation is recipients of tremendous divine goodness, yet they become corpulent and rebel against God. Consequently, God allows the nations to feast upon the people, but despite the harsh and painful torment and suffering, we continue to exist. The Song ends with a vivid description of the Messianic reclamation.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. God showered humanity with endless gifts: the ability to see, to hear, to walk, to taste, to think, to make choices, to become closer to Him. The list is very long. One of the greatest gifts that God gave humanity is the ability to repent. When we err, when we make blunders, when we go awry, we don't need to forever be in the wrong. We can rectify. We can make amends. The gift of repentance is truly wondrous. Repentance had to have been created before the world was created because it would be impossible to create something so wondrous once the structures of the world were set in place. In this very special pre-Rosh Hashanah, pre-10 Days of Repentance podcast, we identify ten different ways in which repentance is truly wondrous. What an opportunity afforded to us by God! – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Elul 29 - Ten Hidden Messages of the Shofar

Jewish Inspiration Podcast · Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 9, 2026 56:39

Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores ten powerful dimensions of the shofar, based on the teachings of Rav Saadia Gaon. He begins with the very pattern of the shofar sounds themselves: the firm tekiah, the broken shevarim, the shattered teruah, and finally another strong tekiah. This sequence reflects the rhythm of human life. We experience times of confidence, periods of brokenness, and moments when we feel shattered—but we can become whole again. The shofar tells us that this cycle is not a failure; it is part of the journey Hashem created for us. The first reasons for the shofar focus on our relationship with Hashem. It coronates Hashem as our personal King, awakens us to teshuvah, and recalls the revelation at Mount Sinai, when every Jewish soul experienced extraordinary closeness and clarity. The shofar also echoes the calls of the prophets, whose blasts were designed to wake the Jewish people from spiritual complacency. Hearing it should therefore never be passive; it is meant to awaken us and make the kingship of Hashem real in our lives.  Other meanings connect the shofar to the destruction and future rebuilding of the Temple, the binding of Isaac, awe and humility, and the Day of Judgment. The Akeidah represents absolute dedication to Hashem, while the shofar's call to humility reminds us that although we are tiny in comparison with the universe, Hashem still desires a personal relationship with each of us. On Rosh Hashanah, we must also prepare our case before the heavenly Judge: Why should Hashem grant us another year, and what will we do differently with the life and blessings He gives us?   The final themes look toward redemption: the ingathering of the exiles and the resurrection of the dead will also be accompanied by the shofar. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that prayer itself can happen anywhere—not only in a synagogue or with a siddur. Prayer means opening the heart and speaking directly with Hashem, whether in Houston, on the highway, at a red light, or in a doctor's waiting room. The shofar ultimately becomes a form of communication beyond words—a spiritual “send button” carrying our deepest message to Hashem.   Rabbi Wolbe concludes by encouraging listeners to prepare before the shofar is blown. Close your eyes, stop everything else, and ask: What is my message to Hashem? Perhaps it is simply, “I want to be closer to You. Help me remove the barriers and limitations that keep me from growing.”_____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinThe Episode is dedicated in honor of Ziggy GruberRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on September 8, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on September 9, 2026_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Share your questions at aw@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content.  _____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life.  To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback, please email: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Our Mission is Connecting Jews & Judaism. Rush Hashanah is a day of judgment. On this day, God sits, as it were, on His Throne of Judgment. The intensity and scrutiny of divine judgment is unfathomable. Even the angels quake and quiver with trepidation. For some, the results of the judgment are instantaneous: the completely righteous are immediately inscribed and sealed into the Book of Life, and the completely wicked are immediately inscribed and sealed into the Book of Death. For the in-betweeners however, their fate is determined by their conduct during the Ten Days of Repentance. In this very sharp and interesting podcast, we offer three approaches to the age-old question of why we don't see a massive uptick in all-cause mortality on Rosh Hashanah. If all the wicked perish instantly, why aren't the morgues jam-packed with dead sinners on the day following Rosh Hashanah?– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Breakneck Through the Bible · Rabbi Bentzi Epstein

Lot is standing outside Sodom with two angels, just before the city burns, and they tell him to run for the mountains. He asks for an alternative: a nearby town named Zoar, close enough that he won't have to face the wilderness alone. G-d grants his request, sparing that city from being consumed in the destruction. Then the fire falls. Lot's wife looks back and is turned into a pillar of salt as four cities are turned to ash.Lot's prayer for that small town to be spared gets answered. Abraham's prayer for Sodom itself, offered by the man whose righteousness the entire Torah is built around, does not. Rabbi Epstein brings in a teaching from the Maggid on why the smaller, more self-interested prayer succeeds where the greater one fails, and what it means that some prayers are being saved for people who haven't been born yet.The episode closes in a cave in the mountains, where Lot ends up after all, and where his family takes a turn that will shape nations for generations.

The entire book of Devarim occurs over the span of 36 days, the final 36 days of Moshe's life. The final four Parshas are an account of the last day of Moshe's life. As he is about to transition to the other world, the reliable shepherd gathers all the people together for one last covenant and exhortation to hearken to the word of God and to not go astray. But why would the nation go astray? These are the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who were chosen by God to be his people. This is the nation that witnessed the Exodus, the theophany at Sinai, who ate the manna and drank water from a rock, who received revelation directly from God and Torah from Moshe himself. Why is there a risk that they will lapse into idolatry? Why is there a concern that they may mimic the barbarous, abominable ways of the nations? The answer, as we learn in this week's edition of the Parsha Podcast, is fascinating and frightening.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –This Parsha Podcast is dedicated in honor of a new couple, Coby and Riva Caplan. Mitzvos have infinite value. There is no experience that we can have in this world that matches the reward in the world to come for a single mitzvah. But not all mitzvos are the same. Some contain more power than others. And even within a single mitzvah, there are infinite gradients of degrees of devotion and self-sacrifice and commitment and refinement that separate one act of that particular mitzvah from another. In truth, the value of mitzvos is incalculable to humans, and only God can accurately assess its value and power. In Days 195–196 of Orchot Tzaddikim, The Ways of the Righteous, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the Gate of Fear of Heaven by developing the idea that the human being is a microcosm of the entire world. Just as creation contains trees, herbs, fruits, waters, rivers, stones, mountains, winds, and countless other systems, the human body contains parallel structures and functions. The author uses these comparisons to awaken awe at the complexity and wisdom Hashem embedded within us.The lesson moves through a series of physical parallels: the digestive system is compared to the depths of the earth, arteries to rivers, bones to the foundations of the world, kidneys and bodily ducts to waterways, and the various fluids of the body to the different waters found throughout creation. The message is not merely anatomical. It is that the human body itself reflects a larger Divine pattern and should inspire a deeper appreciation of the Creator.Day 196 expands the comparison further. The Orchot Tzaddikim parallels hot and cold winds with human breath, thunder with the human voice, lightning with the brightness of the face, mountains with the body's joints and structures, stones with teeth and bones, soil with flesh and skin, vegetation with human hair, and even the zodiac with the spinal column and its attached structures. The author also describes ancient forms of wisdom through which sages were said to discern future events from natural signs, bodily features, vegetation, and other aspects of creation.Rabbi Wolbe concludes by emphasizing the wonder of the human body. The same wisdom Hashem placed throughout the cosmos is, in miniature, embedded within each person. The point is not to become distracted by speculative worlds beyond us, but to recognize the extraordinary miracle already present within our own bodies. The more carefully we contemplate ourselves, the more opportunities we have to develop Yirat Shamayim—awareness, reverence, and awe of Hashem._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on March 23, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 31, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! On the final day of Moshe's life, he gathered the entire nation – men, women, children, and according to the Talmud, all souls of future Jews – to pass them through a final covenant with God. The parsha also contains the prophetic predictions of the Messianic times, and it ends with a simple, binary choice: Moshe tells the nation, “Behold I have placed before you today, the life and the good, and death and evil… Choose Life!” Moshe is 120 years old to the day. He was born on the seventh of Adar and now it is the seven of Adar 120 years later. Today is his last day before his passing and he is taking leave from the nation and handing over the reins to Joshua.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In Day 194 of Orchot Tzaddikim, The Ways of the Righteous, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the Gate of Fear of Heaven with a fascinating comparison between the human being and the universe itself. If mankind reflects Hashem in a tiny and limited way, then the structure of the human body can likewise be understood as a miniature reflection of the greater world. The Orchot Tzaddikim draws parallels between the heavens and the human body: the skull resembles the heavenly firmament; the palate creates divisions within the body just as the firmament separates the waters; and the life-giving soul resides within and directs the body. Just as the universe is governed by the One Creator, the many organs and systems of the human body are unified and directed by one life-force.The author continues this imagery by comparing the seven openings of the head—two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, and the mouth—to the heavenly luminaries and planets. The larger message is that the human being is a remarkable microcosm of Hashem's creation. The more carefully we contemplate ourselves and the world around us, the more opportunities we have to recognize the wisdom embedded throughout creation.Rabbi Wolbe then turns from anatomy to character. Just as the animal kingdom contains gentle creatures as well as predators, human beings can develop very different qualities. Some live peacefully and compassionately, while others behave like predatory animals—using their strength to hurt or take advantage of others. The crucial difference is that we can choose. Hashem created the abilities and forces within creation, but human beings decide how those powers will be expressed. We can use what Hashem has given us constructively or destructively. Fear of Heaven therefore means not merely marveling at creation, but recognizing our responsibility within it and consciously choosing what kind of person we wish to become._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on March 23, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 28, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Blessings and curses. That is the dominant theme of our Parsha. We read the admonition of Deuteronomy - 98 bone-chilling curses that will befall our people in the event that we repudiate our covenant with God. Blessings and curses appear a second time: the nation is instructed to assemble at Mount Gerizim and mount Ebal on the day of the crossing of the Jordan. There, they must make a public pronouncement of blessings and curses. What is the lesson of blessing and curses? Why do we get blessings and curses? In this special and sprawling Parsha podcast, we thread a theme throughout the Parsha that wraps together of the first fruits, the confession of the tithes, the blessings and the curses, and Moshe's joyous exclamation to the people when he declares that they have finally, forty years after the Exodus, been forged into a nation. Put away your pagers, beepers, and walkie-talkies. We have a begun hallowed days of Elul. In one month, we will celebrate Rosh Hashanah. We will all be judged. We will blow the shofar. We will pray for a good year. Ten days later, the holy day of Yom Kippur. We will fast for 25 hours: no food, no drink. On that day,we are like angels. On that day – The gates of mercy are open, like no other day. On that day – The gates of repentance, the gates of forgiveness, the gates of atonement, are wide open. On that day – God is ensconced, as it were, on the throne of mercy. Elul is when we prepare. But how exactly do we prepare? In this interesting podcast, we draw back to the beginning, to the first Elul. As the Book of Deuteronomy draws to its conclusion, the narrative makes a transition: Moshe finishes conveying the mitzvos to the nation, and sets up his final parting message to the people. First, he commands the nation to perform several elaborate ceremonies on the very first day that they cross the Jordan River; then he conveys a scathing, terrifying list of curses that will befall the people in the event that we deviate from the Torah.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Our number one goal in life is to achieve perfection. Perfection of character, perfection of behavior, profession of speech, profession of thought, perfection in every possible way. Our bad character needs to be fixed, our shortcomings need to be rectified, our bad habits need to be reversed, our maladies of character need to be remedied. But how much can we actually change? Is there anything that we do not change I must learn to live with? These are some weighty questions and in a very unusual place in this week's Parsha we find answers, answers that will enable us to ascend the ladder of perfection. Why Hashem Lets Us Make Mistakes [Day 193 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Fear of Heaven 9]

In Day 193 of The Ways of the Righteous (Orchot Tzaddikim), in the Gate of Fear of Heaven, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues exploring the remarkable ways human beings reflect, on a limited scale, qualities Hashem placed into creation. Just as Hashem distinguishes between good and evil, human beings possess the capacity to discern between them. And just as Hashem created and formed the world, mankind has been endowed with extraordinary creative abilities—to build, plant, develop, transform, and accomplish. But human potential does not mean effortless success. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that there are no shortcuts. Greatness requires hard work, Torah study, understanding the ways of Hashem, and ultimately Hashem's assistance. The extraordinary capacities placed within us are possibilities that must be cultivated. The lesson also draws a fascinating parallel between Hashem and the neshamah: neither can be perceived with our physical eyes. We cannot see a soul entering the body at birth or departing at death, yet its reality defines human life. Similarly, the inner thoughts of another person remain hidden from us, while Hashem knows what lies within every heart.Rabbi Wolbe then explains the purpose of the Yetzer Tov and Yetzer Hara. Human beings were deliberately placed into a world of competing impulses so that our choices would have meaning. Our capacity to build or destroy, plant or uproot, accumulate or relinquish, exercise power or restraint creates the arena in which free will operates. The challenge is not to live without an evil inclination, but to strengthen the Yetzer Tov sufficiently to govern it.The lesson concludes with the essential balance between Divine judgment and Divine mercy. Rabbi Wolbe discusses Rashi's teaching on the opening of the Torah: creation is introduced with the Divine name Elohim, associated with judgment. Yet a world operating through strict judgment alone could not endure. Human beings need the possibility of making mistakes, repenting, growing, and trying again. Hashem therefore allows mercy to accompany judgment. Our greatness is found precisely within this system. We possess tremendous potential, but we also possess competing desires and the ability to fail. The person who repeatedly chooses the Yetzer Tov over the Yetzer Hara transforms that struggle into spiritual greatness. Such a person, Rabbi Wolbe concludes, is truly fortunate—and fortunate is the mother who brought such a person into the world._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on March 23, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 19, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! In Day 192 of The Ways of the Righteous (Orchot Tzaddikim), in the Gate of Fear of Heaven, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the extraordinary greatness and potential Hashem placed within every human being. Humanity is unique among creation because we possess a neshamah capable of attaining wisdom, penetrating profound ideas, and recognizing both the physical world and the spiritual reality behind it.Rabbi Wolbe compares the Torah to life's owner's manual. A table, computer, or even a door comes with instructions explaining how it should be assembled and used. Life is infinitely more complicated, so Hashem gave us His instructions as well. The Torah teaches us how to approach marriage, raise children, develop ourselves, and understand the purpose for which we were created. If we want to know how to maximize life, we need to study the manual provided by its Creator. The lesson compares our relationship with Hashem to a king who brings trusted servants into his innermost chambers, reveals his treasures and secrets, and entrusts them with tremendous responsibility. The very fact that the king shares so much with them demonstrates how highly he regards them. Similarly, Hashem allows humanity to discover the extraordinary wisdom embedded throughout creation and gives us dominion over the physical world. This should awaken us to both our greatness and our responsibility.Rabbi Wolbe then offers a fascinating explanation for humanity's seemingly endless ambition. Our sages teach that one who has one hundred wants two hundred, and one who has two hundred wants four hundred. The soul originates from a lofty spiritual realm and naturally yearns to rise higher. But when that tremendous drive becomes redirected through the physical body, the desire for spiritual greatness can become a pursuit of bigger houses, greater wealth, higher positions, nicer possessions, and more honor. The goal, therefore, isn't to eliminate our drive for greatness—it is to redirect it upward. The closer we become to Hashem through Torah and mitzvot, the more we uncover the enormous spiritual potential already within us. Rabbi Wolbe concludes that human beings are capable of far more than we imagine. By fulfilling Hashem's will, we become increasingly connected to Him and can transform the soul's endless desire for "more" into an endless pursuit of wisdom, holiness, and closeness to God._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on March 23, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 18, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Death and the afterlife are foreign, and often terrifying, subjects. Naturally, most of us tend to try to avoid thinking about it too much. This is exactly what allows the evil inclination to deceive and mislead us. It's an important subject to the well-upon, though too much morbid fascination can be counterproductive. In part 2 of our series on when and how to prepare for the afterlife, we address the weighty subject of when young people encounter mortality. When a young person, God forbid, loses a relative, a friend, a parent, or when God forbid, a young person is diagnosed with a terminal illness, this difficult subject is thrust the spotlight. As always, the Torah provides clear, illuminating guidance and direction.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Why the Universe Was Created for You [Day 191 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Fear of Heaven 7]

In Day 191 of The Ways of the Righteous (Gate of Fear of Heaven), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that while human beings are given dominion over creation, that authority carries responsibility. Animals were created to serve mankind—not because they are unimportant, but because humanity possesses something infinitely greater: an eternal soul. We are commanded to treat animals with compassion and even feed them before ourselves, yet our unique role is to elevate creation through our relationship with Hashem.Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes the extraordinary greatness of the neshamah. Before birth, the soul exists in a realm of perfect spiritual clarity, but at birth it becomes enclosed within a physical body. The crying of a newborn symbolizes the soul's transition from unlimited closeness to Hashem into a world of confusion and physical limitations. Throughout life, the soul longs to return to that closeness, while the body constantly seeks physical gratification. Our task is to allow the soul—not the body—to direct our choices.Using the metaphor of a rider and a horse, Rabbi Wolbe teaches that the neshamah must hold the reins while the body serves merely as its vehicle. The body is necessary to perform mitzvot and acts of kindness, but it must remain subordinate to the soul's higher purpose. When the soul guides the body, every physical action becomes elevated into something eternal. The lesson also explores why Judaism teaches the future resurrection of the dead. Both the soul and the body contribute to a life of righteousness: the soul inspires holiness, while the body performs the mitzvot. Therefore, both ultimately share in the eternal reward when they are reunited in the World to Come. Finally, Rabbi Wolbe explains that the vast universe—the sun, moon, stars, and all of creation—exists not for the temporary body but for the eternal soul. Every aspect of creation is designed to inspire us to recognize Hashem's greatness and draw closer to Him. The purpose of enjoying this world is not indulgence but elevation: to use every blessing Hashem gives us as a means of strengthening our relationship with Him._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on February 23, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 14, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Our Parsha features laws relating to all types of leaders: Judges must not corrupt judgment, must not accept bribery, must hearken to the rulings of the Grand Sanhedrin, and must relentlessly pursue justice. Kings may not have too many wives, too many horses, too much silver and gold, and must always be cognizant of the Almighty by carrying a Torah scroll wherever they go. Prophets mustn't withhold the prophecy and mustn't misappropriate prophecy given to their fellow. Priests play a vital role in the release of accidental murderers from cities of refuge and in the ceremony of decapitating a calf when an unidentified corpse is discovered between two cities. Judges, Kings, Prophets, Priests -- very few of us know any of these office holders. In this Parsha podcast, we discover that each one of us must strive to adopt the qualities of these officials. We learn what it takes and the particular pitfalls of each one. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In Day 190 of The Ways of the Righteous (Gate of Fear of Heaven), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues exploring the three dimensions of the human soul: the nefesh, ruach, and neshamah. While animals possess the drives of the nefesh and ruach, only human beings are endowed with the neshamah—the uniquely Divine intellect that enables us to discern truth from falsehood, develop wisdom, and elevate ourselves spiritually. Unlike the physical body, the wisdom acquired by the neshamah accompanies a person beyond this world. The central message of the lesson is that our lives are shaped by whichever part of ourselves we choose to nourish. Rabbi Wolbe compares the neshamah to a vacuum cleaner that is constantly searching to be filled. If we fail to satisfy it with holiness, Torah, mitzvot, and acts of kindness, it will desperately seek fulfillment elsewhere through material pursuits that can never truly satisfy. Wealth, pleasure, fame, and possessions may entertain the body, but only closeness to Hashem nourishes the soul.Rabbi Wolbe also explains that although the neshamah originates in the intellect, its goal is to transform the heart. The heart is the source of both positive and negative inclinations, and every person chooses which side to strengthen. By allowing the mind and the neshamah to guide the heart, a person redirects powerful emotions and desires toward holiness rather than selfish gratification. The same passion that can drive destructive behavior can also become the engine for tremendous righteousness. Finally, the lesson teaches that wisdom is the key to understanding both the physical and spiritual worlds. Torah enables a person to distinguish between what merely appears attractive and what genuinely brings eternal value. Every advancement, talent, and technology can be used either for holiness or for destruction. The responsibility lies with us to allow our neshamah to lead our choices so that, when we ultimately stand before Hashem, we can answer that we invested our lives in what truly mattered._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on February 23, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on August 13, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired!
