As Elijah journeys to the place where he will be taken into heaven, he invites Elisha to count the cost of following him as prophet in Israel. Elisha faithfully follows Elijah and asks that he would receive a double portion of the spirit upon Elijah. When Elisha sees Elijah taken up into heaven, he rightly recognizes God's activity and confesses that the prophetic word is the true power in Israel. The LORD answers Elisha's prayer and makes this plain to Elisha as he is able to part the Jordan River just as Elijah did before him. Right away, the LORD shows His people that Elisha is the prophet in whose mouth is the Word of God, which comes to pass and must not be mocked. Rev. Carl Roth, pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Elgin, TX, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 2 Kings 2:1-25. To learn more about Grace Lutheran, visit www.graceelgin.org. "A Kingdom Divided” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Kings. The division in the kingdom of Israel in this part of history was greater than a matter of north and south. The biggest division was between the people and their God. Yet even as the people rebelled against the LORD as their King, still He remained faithful to call them back to Himself through His prophets, working through history to send the good and gracious King, Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Apostle Ken shared very personally how the Lord delivered him from the spirit of poverty, which is a horrible religious spirit. And praise God, he imparted a revelation of grace, blessing, abundance, double portion, and how to decree it and walk in it! God is able to make grace abound to each of us—grace upon grace, because God wants His people to be successful! More on the double portion inherited by the first-born. What happens if the first-born renounces the extra part of his double portion, so that he ends up with a comparable inheritance to other brothers? Rav Pappa and Rav Pappi (yes) both weigh in, based on inference. Plus, an actual case that came before Rava adjudication. Also, a new mishnah! Namely, if the father attempts to decree a different kind of inheritance division than that which is established in the Torah - it won't work. Maybe if he reapportioned his property via gifting, but not inheritance. Plus, the question: first-born to whom? How do the different parents make a difference in this regard?
A beraita (Tosefta) presents the idea of enhancement to the property that takes place after the death of the father - for which the first-born does not get the double-portion. But that's a point that needs refinement. It may depend who made those improvements. Plus, the question of who pays the father's debt - that is, as a double portion, or not? Also, more on the first-born not taking a double-portion when a loan was returned to the estate. But who supports that view?
On the double-portion for the first-born. And the various ways that can play out. Plus, going back to the biblical treatment of the double portions. Also, a good deal of commentary on the story of Jacob, Leah, and Rachel. And also the story of the 70 persons of Jacob's family who went down to to Egypt, and the concern that counting out the family members totals 69. How to find the 70th?

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The Torah establishes in the Book of Devarim (21:17) that a father must "recognize" ("Yakir") the distinction of his firstborn son by awarding him a double portion in the inheritance. Thus, for example, if a man had three sons, after his death his estate is divided into four portions, two of which are awarded to the firstborn; each of the other two sons then receives one of the remaining two portions. Interestingly enough, the Hebrew word "Bechor" ("firstborn") itself alludes to this Halacha. This word consists of the three letters "Bet," "Chaf" and "Resh," which have the respective numerical values of 2, 20 and 200 – all of which signify the notion of "double." This Halacha applies only if the deceased's first child is male and born naturally (not cesarean.) If his oldest child is a daughter, then the oldest son does not have the status of "Bechor" and does not receive a double portion of the inheritance. Furthermore, this Halacha only applies to the first born of the father, not the mother. The right of the firstborn to a double portion does not apply if the father died, Heaven forbid, before the oldest son's birth. Meaning, if a woman conceived with twins and her husband passed away during pregnancy, the estate is divided evenly between the two twins. As mentioned earlier, the Torah presents the law of the firstborn's double portion with the word "Yakir," which means to "recognize" or "know." This term alludes to the fact that a firstborn receives a double portion only if his father "knew" him," to the exclusion of a tragic case of a firstborn whose father passed away before his birth. If one's oldest child is a son but he was born after a miscarriage, he is nevertheless considered a "Bechor" with respect to this Halacha. Even though a firstborn son after a miscarriage does not require a Pidyon Ha'ben (the symbolic "redemption" of a firstborn son from a Kohen), he is deemed a Bechor as far as inheritance is concerned. A firstborn son thus receives a double portion even if he was born after a miscarriage or several miscarriages, and even if he was born after a stillborn child (or several stillborn children), Heaven forbid. These Halachot apply only in cases where no will was written, and thus the deceased's estate is distributed automatically in accordance with the system prescribed in the Torah. We do not discuss here the issue of if and how one can circumvent these laws by drawing up a will during his lifetime. Summary: When a father's naturally (not caesarean) firstborn child is a son, he receives twice as large a share in his father's estate as his brothers. This applies even if the firstborn was born after a stillborn or miscarriage. It does not apply in a case of a man who dies while his wife was pregnant with twins; since he died before the birth of his firstborn son, the son does not receive a double portion. See the book- "Pure Money" by Dayan Cohen, pages 222-223. See Hoshen Mishpat, siman 276.
