In this episode of Parsha & Prose, Rabbi Shlomo Gemara and I explore the Torah portion of Chukat, focusing on the red heifer, a ch'ok—a divine statute beyond human understanding. We delve into the meaning behind this enigmatic commandment and why God gives us laws that defy comprehension. Additionally, we discuss the emotional weight of losing a sibling, as seen in the passing of Miriam and Aaron, Moses' sister and brother. Could Moses' act of striking the rock—against God's command to speak to it—stem from his overwhelming grief? We invite your questions and reflections on this parsha or any others we explore. Thank you for joining us—we're deeply grateful. Am Yisrael Chai! Parshat Chukat opens with the ritual of the red heifer (para aduma) which purifies individuals from impurity caused by contact with a dead body. Leadership comes in all different shapes and sizes, and in this episode I had the privilege to sit down with a leader of Am Yisrael, one who leads behind the scenes in her life affirming work of caring for the dead. Sharon Laufer has been a member of the Chevra Kedisha (Jewish burial society) since she was 29 and pregnant with triplets. A hessed experiment that first served as a way to calm her fear of death, ultimately became a life calling that has brought her into rooms facing scenarios she could never have imagined. Sharon's involvement in burial and body identification has made her and others who do similar work an integral part of the army both before and after October 7th. Listen to her story--until the end--to hear about her dedication to the דtate of Israel and about the holy work she does to escort the departed from this world to the next.

The negative drive is a master of misrouting. What may have been a necessary strategy in the past — or even a mitzvah — now, on this particular journey, may take you far from your goal. In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band “Foreigner” (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home”. Other production work included “The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars”, “The Curves”, and “Nutz” as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O'Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. Seasons of the Moon, a unique fine-art black-and-white photography book combining poetry and Torah essays, has now sold out and is much sought as a collector's item fetching up to $250 for a mint copy. He is much in demand as an inspirational speaker both in Israel, Great Britain and the United States. He was Plenary Keynote Speaker at the Agudas Yisrael Convention, and Keynote Speaker at Project Inspire in 2018. Rabbi Sinclair lectures in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy at Ohr Somayach/Tannenbaum College of Judaic studies in Jerusalem and is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications Ohrnet and Torah Weekly. His articles have been published in The Jewish Observer, American Jewish Spirit, AJOP Newsletter, Zurich's Die Jüdische Zeitung, South African Jewish Report and many others. Rabbi Sinclair was born in London, and lives with his family in Jerusalem. He was educated at St. Anthony's Preparatory School in Hampstead, Clifton College, and Bristol University. Sivan Says: Taking the Torah Personally

Today's episode, on Parshat Chukat, is full of heifers, and snakes, and curses, and blessings. It's also full of goodbyes, to some of our holy book's holiest heroes. This week, Sivan tells us, it's Miriam's time to shine. She explains that after 40 years of tough desert wandering, so close yet so far to entering the promised land, Miriam's song, dance, and prayer inspired others, with hope, optimism, and faith. But how was Miriam able to maintain this positivity without seeing the way out of darkness? And how can you yourself keep the faith like Miriam did, even through ups and downs? Listen to find out.  Sivan Rahav-Meir is a leading Israeli journalist, media personality and Torah scholar. You can sign up for her The Daily Portion WhatsApp group, where Sivan sends small insights about Judaism and current affairs. Rabbi Dunner explores the significance of water as a metaphor for Torah and spiritual sustenance. Beginning with the story of Rabbi Akiva's realization of the power of water, prompted by observing water drops wearing away a rock, Rabbi Dunner cites the dreadful story of the water crisis in Flint, MI, comparing it to the biblical narrative regarding the water stopping its flow from Miriam's well in Parshat Chukat. Rabbi Dunner emphasizes the importance of pure, untainted leadership and continuous spiritual nourishment for the Jewish people.
