IntroductionHaving previously discussed Talmudic Parables of Wine with Looks with Dr. Elana Stein Hain on episode 133 of The Jewish Drinking Show, there are certainly Talmudic parables involving wine. However, there are also Talmudic parables that use wine and drinking for sexual references, too! Joining the 185th episode of The Jewish Drinking Show to explore these parables is Rabbi Dr. Gail Labovitz.Biography of GuestRabbi Dr. Gail Labovitz is Professor of Rabbinic Literature and former Chair of the Department of Rabbinics for the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies. She is the author of two books of rabbinic scholarship and of numerous articles in the areas of rabbinic literature, Jewish law, and feminist studies, including "Is Rav's Wife 'a Dish'? Food and Eating Metaphors in Rabbinic Discourse of Sexuality and Gender Relations", which serves as the catalyst for this episode.Dr. Labovitz has also taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) and the Academy for Jewish Religion in New York. Prior to joining the faculty at AJU, Dr. Labovitz worked as the Senior Research Analyst in Judaism for the Feminist Sexual Ethics Project at Brandeis University, and as the Coordinator for the Jewish Women's Research Group, a project of the Women's Studies Program at JTS. Rabbi Labovitz served for ten years on the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly, and authored two responsa, as well as participating in a number of other rabbinic and academic committees and activities. In this episode of the Z3 Podcast, artists Vanessa Hidary and Neshama Carlebach reflect on how their creative work and personal identities have been transformed in the wake of October 7. They share how their art has shifted toward activism, shaped by grief, urgency, and deep connection to their communities. The conversation explores the evolving role of Jewish artists, the contrasts between diaspora and Israeli experiences, and the ways art can offer healing in moments of rupture. Listen to these groundbreaking artists as they get deep and spiritual, making the case for art and activism as a genuine, necessary tool in building the world to come.Neshama Carlebach is an award-winning singer, songwriter and educator who has performed and taught in cities around the world. In the aftermath of the October 7th attacks, Neshama brought thousands of people together throughout the NY metro area for concerts that have raised over half a million dollars for Israel. Neshama is currently pursuing rabbinic ordination at The Academy for Jewish Religion.Vanessa Hidary is an international spoken word artist, educator, and advocate whose work has had a profound impact on both the Jewish community and beyond. Patrick explores the concept of perfect contrition and explains what it truly means to love God more than fearing hell and how this profound act isn't about emotions but a willful commitment. Even without feeling it emotionally, genuine intent and contemplation can bridge that gap. Patrick also discusses the beautiful Prayer "Before a Crucifix" to strengthen reflections. (This Prayer can be found on the Relevant Radio App) Bill - Where does the command to die on the cross come from? (00:32) Mary - Do you really have to love God more than you fear hell for perfect contrition? (10:51) Chris - When my wife came to the USA, she was upset that we didn't have voter ID. In Brazil, you do need voter ID. (22:49) Robert - What does it mean that heaven and earth will pass away (27:31) John - For skeptics of the Old Testament and the original Jewish Religion, what would be their strongman argument on why the Old Testament was communicated in that way. (32:25) Elias - I have dual citizenship with Mexico and the US. In Mexico, they have a federal ID, and it's required for voting. (40:10) Pam - If God was in the Garden of Eden and he intended Adam and Eve to be there together, then did he already know they were going to sin and Jesus would have to die on the cross? (42:16) Cindy - My daughter and I are discussing 'Sola Scriptura'. Do Catholics not believe in the Word of the Bible and only believe in tradition? (48:52)
