In this episode, we step into one of the most surprising stories in the Bible — talking donkeys, hired curses, and blessings that can't be stopped. We meet Balaam, a mysterious pagan prophet-for-hire. He's not part of Israel, but he hears from God — and when the king of Moab tries to pay him to curse God's people, things don't go according to plan. Today, we dive into: · Who Balaam really was (and why he's so hard to pin down) · The ancient practice of paying prophets to curse enemies · That unforgettable moment with a talking donkey · And how all of this unexpectedly points to Jesus Even in confusion, compromise, or enemy schemes, God's blessing holds firm. PLUS, please be sure you don't miss the announcement at the end of today's episode with all the details about OOBT's upcoming summer break – my plans, the official return date, and so much more! I do hope you find moments to connect more fully with those you love AND with your Bibles in study this summer! For the full episode show notes, please go to Mfahringmfahring.com/numbers-22-24

Entrust Your Burdens to Jesus | Luke 5:1-11 Life is full of moments when we feel like Peter—exhausted, discouraged, and questioning why our efforts seem fruitless: “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing!” (Luke 5:5). We echo Isaiah's lament: “Woe is me! I am a man of unclean lips!” (Isaiah 6:5). In these moments of doubt and despair, the temptation is to give up. We long to trust Jesus at His Word, to try again, but the results often seem worse than before. Yet, when all else fails, we cling to what never changes—the Word of the Lord and His gracious promises. Like Peter and Isaiah, we may hesitate to listen, but when we do, we find that Christ never fails us. He forgives, sanctifies, and restores. No matter how overwhelming our burdens, we hear His unshakable promise in the Divine Service:
In Luke 4, Jesus teaches in the Synagogue in Nazareth a sermon that would be remembered for a long time. It was controversial enough that the people tried to kill him. What kind of sermon would do that? How does Jesus' message inform our faith and the life of our church today?
If you've ever felt stuck, delayed, or like God's promises are just out of reach, you're not alone. Waiting is not just a part of the Christian life—it is the way of the Christian life. Every follower of Jesus has had to walk this road, and it's often where God does His most profound work. I'm thrilled to share something special with you today—chapter 1 of my new book Still Standing: Following Jesus Even When It Hurts. I've written this book to inspire hope in the hearts of followers of Jesus who have encountered suffering as they have pursued obedience to Christ. Take a listen and if the message resonates with you, I'd love for you to grab a copy: https://www.amazon.com/Still-Standing-Following-Jesus-Hurts/dp/0802429971/ Thank you for listening, and till next time! Without denying the real pain we carry, Lina shows Christians how to rediscover joy…how God’s presence is promised in every valley, trial and tribulation. Lina Abujamra is a Pediatric ER doctor & the founder of Living with Power Ministries. Her latest book is Still Standing - Following Jesus Even When it Hurts. She joins Perry & Shawna for an honest conversation about our desire to control all of life, how following Jesus doesn’t look like what we thought it would, wrestling with knowing God can change everything in a moment during our long suffering, and how our feelings can betray us. If you’re struggling to walk faithfully with God through your struggle this conversation will remind you that God is with you and that it’s possible to experience joy on the road marked with suffering. Also, in 2016 Shawna hit a low point. She remembers having to pull off the road, weeping as she listened to Danny Gokey’s “Tell Your Heart To Beat Again.” When it feels like life is over – it could be just beginning. Last, the greeter at church said to Perry one Sunday morning, “Why so glum??” That was a pick me up. Not! But then he experienced the transformative power of God’s presence. It’s all about the gift of gathering together, in person, to worship.Support the show: https://give.moodyradio.org/fall-share?v=def&appeal=MRWM&_gl=1%2a142i9we%2a_ga%2aNTE4MTE5MmUtY2U1Yy00YmQ3LWU4MmUtNjEwYTQ5YzAyODRj%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTY5NTExODEwMS4yOTkuMC4xNjk1MTE4MTAxLjYwLjAuMA..&_ga=2.197426156.215784306.1695059984-1182841406.166859587See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Faithfully walking—and uncovering joy—on a road paved with suffering. Truth alert: The Christian life is marked with great suffering. We live in a fallen and broken world full of disappointments and the loss of dreams. And there is a cost to following Christ—often painfully felt in close relationships. You can survive the “storm”… and when it passes.. you’ll find yourself still standing. Part two of our Sermon Series "A Long Walk with Jesus" with Pastor Adam Starling
How can we be bold in our faith when we don't want to be anything like the “Christians” we see in the world around us causing so much harm? Come hear about how true Jesus followers have always been subversive and countercultural, and proudly reclaim that powerful lineage. Note: Due to technical issues, the audio for the scripture reading and the first two minutes of the sermon was not captured. The scripture passage read was Romans 1:15-17 (CEB).
Jesus addresses firmly those who were rejecting him. Then he gives one of his most stunning teachings and analogies concerning unclean spirits leaving and coming back stronger with more evil, and what that actually means. And finally, he tells us his disciples are in his family

Is the whole of Scripture just a disorganized collection of conflicting documents? Some scholars think so, claiming it to be a battleground for historical contradictions. But what if it's a carefully orchestrated thread woven together and preserved by the Divine Author?Just a few episodes ago, Dr. Chip Bennett wowed listeners with his insights into the resurrection themes and third-day narratives from the Old Testament. For this midweek podcast episode, Chip returns to dive deeper into the Hebrew Bible and uncover how the Messianic prophecies are intertwined with the tales of patriarchs like Jacob, Joseph, Joshua, and Judah. How do some of our daily routines point to the resurrection? Can the story of Cinderella shed light on the Gospel? How does the third day relate to life and death motifs? All these questions and more will be answered at the conclusion of this special three-part series. If you haven't done so already, check out the previous two podcasts in the list of resources below to ensure you're all caught up on Frank and Chip's full conversation! To view the entire VIDEO PODCAST, be sure to join our CrossExamined private community. Did you know that there are over a billion sheep on the earth today? In New Zealand, sheep outnumber people five to one! Humans have a long history of tending sheep. Since sheep are naturally defenseless against predators, they tend to be nervous and easily frightened. If you think about it, we have a lot in common with sheep. The world often seems like a dangerous place. Anxiety and fear are rampant today, even among the most wealthy and successful. In today's reading, the Psalmist expresses deep distress. Instead of peacefully sleeping through the night, he groans and stretches out his hands to heaven in desperation (vv. 2–3). He laments to God: “You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak” (v. 4). Most disturbing was the fact that his situation made him question God's faithfulness. He wondered if God would keep His covenant promises and be true to His nature as compassionate and gracious (vv. 7–9). These troubling doubts increased his anxiety. Imagine, if a sheep started questioning the shepherd's care and trustworthiness! The Psalmist then paused and encouraged himself to remember who God is and what He had done (vv. 11–12). He reflected on God's stunning deliverance of Israel from slavery in Egypt. He reminded himself that God is powerful and cares about His people. Verses 16–18 remind us of the disciple's observations about Jesus: “Even the winds and waves obey him!” (Matt. 8:27). This powerful, mighty God is our Shepherd, and we are His sheep. Note the comparison of God's people to a “flock” in verse 20. >> Sheep need a shepherd to protect, lead, and calm them. We need that too! When doubts creep in, remember what God has done for you. Best of all, God showed His love by sending Jesus to save us from sin. He made a way for us to be in fellowship with Him. “The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing” (Ps. 23:1).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The (considerable) vitriol directed against Bart by theologically conservative Christians is (easily) matched by what he gets from critics on the opposite end of the spectrum --"mythicists" who insist not only that the New Testament is filled with legendary material but that Jesus himself was, literally, a myth: he never existed. In this episode Bart will explain why -- whatever else you might want to say about Jesus of Nazareth -- historians of all stripes do not doubt that at the least Jesus was a first-century Jewish teacher who was crucified by the Romans. Are the mythicists -- intent on disproving Christianity -- simply shooting themselves in the foot by taking their skepticism too far?

Pastor Mike walks us through the account of one of Jesus' closest female friends and shows us that no matter our stories, our struggles, or our secrets, it doesn't matter how broken we might be—because the broken belong with Jesus. Anger can do real damage to our relationships and our lives. So, Pastor Mike says, we need to ask ourselves: how are we going to deal with our anger? We often have to be among the best to be chosen. But what if we're not the best? Or even close to it? Good thing for us that Jesus isn't like that. He didn't choose the best and the brightest. Instead, he picked people just like us: sinful, complicated people who sometimes aren't even considered good. Or, in the case of the apostle Peter, Jesus picked proud people who talked too much. WHY would Jesus do that? Through the story of Peter, Pastor Mike gives a message of hope to those who can relate to the prideful Peter.
