Issue 53 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd brings you the Remakes Tribunal where we put bad filmmaking on trial. Continuing our 40th Anniversary edition of films from 1984, first up we ask whether a remake deserves to exist: (deep breath) Greystoke The Legend of Tarzan Lord of the Apes. Then we offer a Parole Board to a film which failed the first time, and ask if the disastrous big screen version of Supergirl could be redeemed with a remake. The other two parts of this issue are already out: Double Reel Monthly and Classics and Hidden Gems, and we hope to bring you a Spotlight episode soon.

The King of the podcast Jungle is back! This week the boys swing by March 30th, 1984 for the releases of ROMANCING THE STONE and GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES. It's Episode 72: The Legend of Opening Weekend, Lord of The Podcasts!Me Tarzan, you Gene. March 30, 1984: A time of adventure and exploration. A time when Cabbage Patch Kids and RPG nerds and middle school Mathletes ruled the jungle known as the Tri-State area. Just as Ian Holm's Belgian-French-Hobbit-explorer is teaching Christopher Lambert's Tarzan-Not-Tarzan the ways of British civility and decorum, Fred's 6th grade babysitter is teaching him the ways of British black-comedy (The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy) and depravity (A Clockwork Orange). Terrycloth robes may or may not be involved. While Michael Douglas does his best to wear the mantle of Indiana Jones and sweet-talk his way into Kathleen Turner's heart and bed, he's no match for the 7th grade Cassanova of Calculus, the Man-Beast of the Mathletes: Jason “Abacus Finch” O'Connell. (Cue Glenn Close ADR'ing a young female Mathlete moaning and groaning) And Dan's call-back to his sister's Cabbage Patch Kid sends Fred into a deep spiral of repressed memories, dark secrets, and possible Furby-Fetishim. Jeffrey Parker, Jr ain't afraid of no ghosts! And two old friends call in to Romance the boy's Stones and possibly pitch some new business ideas. Bon Ape-Tit!

Based on elements within Edgar Rice Burroughs's 1912 novel, "Tarzan of the Apes," Greystoke begins in the late 19th century, where a young couple born into Scottish nobility, Jack Clayton and his pregnant wife Alice, find themselves shipwrecked off the coast of Western Africa. Months later, they give birth to a boy who quickly becomes an orphan when his mother dies of malaria, and his father is killed in an altercation with nearby apes. One of the apes adopts the human baby as her own. When the boy grows into a man, he takes on the alpha male to become the leader of the tribe. Meanwhile, an expedition arrives nearby for specimens for the British Musem. The expedition gets viciously attacked by a native village. Surviving the slaughter is a Belgian named Phillippe d'Arnot, whose life is saved and wounds tended by the mysterious ape-man. Phillippe realizes his savior is the son of the married couple, the Claytons, who built the abandoned cabin in the vicinity. Dubbing the jungle man "John Clayton', d'Arnot teaches him to speak, move, and behave like an aristocrat from civilized society before taking him to his ancestral estate in Scotland to reunite with his grandfather, the Earl of Greystoke. There, John develops feelings for grandfather's ward, an American-raised woman named Jane Parker. Christopher Lambert, Ralph Richardson, Ian Holm, Andie MacDowell, James Fox star. Hugh Hudson directs.

There's just no experience that compares to roughing it in the woods - campfires, fishing, the clean air of the great outdoors. Needless to say, Ben and Zane were delirious from hunger and fear almost immediately. Thankfully a very well-spoken and, dare I say, handsome slab of man rescued them from their plight and helped the two get back toward civilization. Granted, it wasn't the right civilization, but come on, they all look the same after a while.

Jungle Deep - The Tropical Lifestyle Podcast on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)
Dr. Jones explores the world of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. Tarzan is the most famous character associated with the jungle. He was the creation of the famous adventure author, Edgar Rice Burroughs. Not counting all the books, nearly 90 movies and 6 TV shows have been produced about Tarzan in the nearly 100 years since he first appeared on the silver screen. That's an amazing average of about 1 per year for 100 consecutive years! It is hard to think of any other character in the history of the movies that has received that much attention! While in other episodes we are going to be learning about the science of the real jungles of today, and talking with some modern explorers, in this episode we are going back in time to take a look at how people perceived the jungles 100 years ago, through the focusing lens of Tarzan. To take us on this particular safari, we have as our guide, a leading expert on Tarzan, and producer of a new documentary about Tarzan's very first movie. His name is Al Bohl. Al 's new documentary is called, "Tarzan, Lord of the Louisiana Jungle", about the historic Tarzan silent movie blockbuster made in 1918. Questions or Comments?
