This week we wrap up Fantasy February and our look at pulp heroes with a look at a film that has it's roots in (and centers around) pulpy romance fiction novels. From 1984, Romancing The Stone. Kathleen Turner plays Joan Wilder, a meek and mousy romance novelist, who receives a treasure map in the mail from her recently murdered brother-in-law. At the same time, her sister Elaine is kidnapped in Colombia and the two criminals responsible, demand that she travel to Colombia to exchange the map for her sister. Joan does, but she quickly becomes lost in the jungle after being waylaid by Zolo, a corrupt Colombian cop who will stop at nothing to obtain the map for himself. While there, she meets, and is helped by, an irreverent, laid-back adventurer of sorts, named Jack Colton (Michael Douglas) who agrees (for a price) to bring her back to civilization. Together, they embark upon an adventure that could be straight out of one of Joan's pulpy romance novels!

Happy Valentine's Day listeners! To celebrate, grab your favorite smutty romance book and your map of questionable origins as we explore the chaotically-fun film, Romancing the Stone. Joining the conversation is the wonderful Raven Todd DaSilva, who helps us to uncover the film's questionable romance and even more questionable archaeology. We uncover the tragic history of the film's screenwriter, it's intriguing relationship with the Indiana Jones franchise, and how archaeology and travel may lead to self-actualization(?). If nothing else, just know that Kathleen Turner walked in ruined pumps so that Sandra Bullock could run in a sparkly-pink jumpsuit. If you want to learn more about Raven and her work, be sure to visit her website www.digitwithraven.com and follow her on social media under the handle @digitwithraven. If you want to get your hands on her excellent book The Other Ancient Civilisations: Decoding Archaeology's Less Celebrated Cultures, you can do so here or at most major online booksellers.

In their season four finale, our hosts deliver classicly differing opinions on the 1984 Action/Adventure Rom Com Romancing the Stone. When a romance novelist journeys to Colombia to rescue her kidnapped sister, she finds herself on an adventure she could only imagine writing alongside a cantankerous, exotic bird smuggler who's a far cry from any hero. Madison finds herself melting into the pages of this romantic plot, while Chelsea feels this tale is a first draft at best. (And did they have to kill the crocodile instead of that awful bald man?) Starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas, with delightful cameos from Danny DeVito and Holland Taylor, this treasure hunt will have most viewers flying high on love and adventure, and all others longing for a good crashed plane hot boxing. Connect With Us Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/loveatfirstscreening/ Email: loveatfirstscreening@gmail.com Production Hosts: Chelsea Ciccone and Madison Hill Music: Good Steph Artwork: Chelsea Ciccone Social Media: Marissa Ciccone About the Show An examination of classic tropes and iconic characters pits connoisseur against cynic—one romantic comedy at a time. The cinematic world of love and laughter had rom-com enthusiast Madison head over heels from the time Harry met Sally. For genre skeptic Chelsea, however, it's been a grueling enemies-to-lovers plot. In Love at First Screening, Madison introduces Chelsea to all the fan-favorite love stories she's never wanted to watch. One friend's passion might be the other's displeasure, but doesn't love conquer all? Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) is a popular romance author who gets a crash course in nonfiction when she has to save her kidnapped sister by delivering a treasure map to the criminal duo Ralph (Danny DeVito) and Ira (Zack Norman) in Columbia. Luckily, somewhat foolhardy, yet trustworthy, Jack Colton (Michael Douglas) shows up and agrees (for money) to guide Joan, which helps her find herself in her own adventure. Oh boy, are there going to be some crocodiles! Romance as well! Romance and crocodiles! Juan (Alfonso Arau) is a huge fan of Joan's writing! Let's go jungle-trucking with him! Meanwhile, Zolo (Manuel Ojeda) is going to mustache-knife his way to that treasure. RTS are intrigued by the cave tchotchke and boating in downtown New York. Collin, Jeremy and La-Mar go mud-sliding with the best of them and find secret jungle-plane tequila. Maybe this is where the pudding rings come from. This film is an adventure worthy of everyone's time! In the end, friends celebrate Mother's Day/week with some Voodoo Doughnuts, mimosas and a fun flick. You should too!

"Romancing the Stone" is a 1984 romantic action-adventure film directed by Robert Zemeckis, starring Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas, and Danny DeVito. The film follows a romance novelist who embarks on a thrilling journey in Colombia to rescue her kidnapped sister and becomes entangled with a charismatic treasure hunter. Here are some key aspects of the production: Script and Development: The script for "Romancing the Stone" was written by Diane Thomas. The story was initially inspired by Thomas' own experiences traveling in Mexico. The script blends romance, comedy, and action-adventure elements, creating a unique and engaging narrative. Casting: The film's cast played a crucial role in its success. Kathleen Turner was cast as Joan Wilder, the romantic novelist who finds herself in an adventurous real-life situation. Michael Douglas portrayed Jack Colton, the rugged treasure hunter. Danny Devito played Ralph, a small-time crook who adds comedic elements to the story. The chemistry between Turner and Douglas contributed to the film's appeal. Filming Locations: The production was filmed on location in various places, including Mexico and Colombia. The lush landscapes and exotic settings added authenticity to the adventure. The jungle scenes, waterfalls, and treacherous terrain were visually striking and enhanced the film's atmosphere. Director Robert Zemeckis: Known for his later work on the "Back to the Future" trilogy and "Forrest Gump," directed "Romancing the Stone." His direction added a balance of action, humor, and romance to the film. Zemeckis' storytelling skills helped create a cohesive and enjoyable experience for the audience. Stunts and Action Sequences: The film features a variety of action sequences, including chases, confrontations, and daring escapes. Stunt coordinators worked to execute these scenes safely and effectively. The dynamic action added excitement to the adventure-driven plot. Release and Reception: Upon its release in 1984, "Romancing the Stone" received positive reviews for its entertainment value, engaging storyline, and the performances of its cast. The film's success led to a sequel, "The Jewel of the Nile," released in 1985, reuniting the main cast and continuing their adventures. "Romancing the Stone" stands as a classic example of the romantic action-adventure genre, known for its mix of romance, humor, and thrilling escapades in exotic locales. The film's popularity led to its enduring status in popular culture. "You're the best time I ever had." Joan Wilder, as played by the incomparable Kathleen Turner, was a romance writer, a single gal, and a very devoted sister. Directed by young Robert Zemeckis, written by a first-time screenwriter Diane Thomas, and co-starring Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito, the little $10 million 1984 crowd pleaser cashed in its stones to the tune of $115 million. This one goes out to our mom, Carol, who loved Romancing the Stone - an action adventure romantic comedy from 1984 starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. Come to find out, we like these movies now too now that we're in our mid to late 30s and it's directed by our pal, Robert Zemeckis or Bobby Z if you've listened to some of our past episodes on Back to the Future or Forrest Gump.  Romancing the Stone (weird title, we'll go into it) follows Joan Wilder, romance novel/cat lady who longs for a real life romance, not just one to write about.  She finds it when she has to high tail it to Colombia to save her sister from some sketchy dudes who have kidnapped her in the hope that she has a map her dead (murdered? details are foggy) husband had that will lead to lost gemstone.  Joan ends up with the map, goes to Colombia and on the way meets Jack T. Colton aka hot guy with a gun and problems buttoning his shirt all the way - who helps her in more ways then one, *wink wink.  We'll talk about rom coms geared towards middle aged women in the 80s, how travel was so so different way back when and is Michael Douglas hot or does he look like a rat? Weigh in please on this burning question.

Are you the lone wolf that can't be tied down or are you the relationship-seeking wooer that won't take no for an answer? This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about the commonly seen media trope of a pairing that consists of one person who doesn't want to be in a romantic relationship and one person who is 100% convinced they can change their mind. Media pretty much always only shows examples of this trope through a monogamous and allosexual lens. It completely ignores that aromantics and asexuals exist who might just really not have any interest in dating or romantic relationships, and also largely ignores that people may be seeking a relationship outside of the lens of monogamy. This trope is particularly gross like 90% of the time when it is applied to straight couples, but when it is applied to queer couples we think it can actually work. Often these stories play out with the man not wanting a relationship and a woman working hard to change him. But even after she does “win” a relationship with him, he still really has not changed as a person and still is overall misogynistic. There are also really uncomfortable consent issues with a man continuing to pursue a woman who consistently turns him down. The lesson these stories teach is that you can change anyone if you are the right person, which is an extremely toxic message to learn. The reason this trope feels so much less problematic for queer couples is that there is usually a lot more nuance behind why someone does not want a relationship. They might not be fully out yet. They may still be trying to figure out their sexuality. It might not be safe to be publicly out in their career. It's not the same as in straight pairings where the man just is a ‘bad boy' who doesn't want to be tied down and just wants to sleep with whoever he wants (except in the case of Shane who is literally the queer version of that exact archetype). But in cases that aren't Shane, it usually looks less like someone only changing due to the annoying persistence of their pursuer and instead just happening to fall in love. Some places we've seen this trope work are in Glee with Santana and Brittany, She-Ra with Catradora, and Teenage Bounty Hunters with Stepril. We also think it does occasionally work in straight media, because arguably The Notebook has this dynamic but Ellie still eats it up everytime. And we do like how 500 Days of Summer flips the trope on its head a bit, because it has the woman being the one who does not want a relationship and they do not end up together in the end.
