Send us a textTo commemorate Shakespeare's 461st Birthday, I am very happy to bring on to the Fixate & Binge Podcast, HANNAH YOUNG, a native of Stratford-on-Avon, the home of Shakespeare. Hannah is a classically trained actress who has performed extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company over several seasons in her career. She features as Lady Macbeth in Cheek by Jowl's film ‘Acting' which is premiered this weekend in London's The Barbican Centre, and has also worked at the National Studio in London and in several West End productions. In this episode, Hannah shares her first experiences with Shakespeare, growing up in Stratford-on-Avon, recounting her work on the stage with stage and screen legends. She illuminates how she approaches her characters, and uses the text itself to explore clues and ideas about her portrayals for audiences. If you're a casual fan of Shakespeare, a budding academic, a Bardolater, or terrified of experiencing Shakespeare for the first time -- this is the perfect podcast to hear from Hannah on how best to approach the immortal Bard.In this podcast, I also provide a spoiler-free review of Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza's film WARFARE -- currently in theaters and well-worth the price of admission to experience on the big screen!Thank you for listening! Send us a textWelcome back to this week's episode of The Fixate & Binge Podcast! In this episode, I offer my defense of why binging is sometimes the BEST way to experience a show and there is no better opportunity than now to fully enjoy HBO MAX's runaway medical drama hit -- THE PITT starring ER's Noah Wylie.Trust me -- there is simply no better way to fully immerse yourself in one of the finest shows of 2025 than to binge it all in as little time as possible, and right now all episodes are available!I also share my reasons why not all remakes of beloved films are negative -- and profess my nearly 20-years love of my favorite band from Glasgow, Scotland, Mogwai, with their new documentary -- MOGWAI: IF THE STARS HAD A SOUND which is highly recommended to anyone who loves post-rock, instrumental music.Thank you for listening! Send us a textWelcome back to the Fixate & Binge Podcast -- in this latest episode, Joe discusses the ugly campaign picking up steam with the casting announcements for HBO's new Harry Potter series and discusses (with examples) why this is hypocrisy of the highest order and a huge step back towards tolerance and equality.Joe also discusses two new films -- one of which is streaming now on Netflix: THE ELECTRIC STATE starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt that seems like an enormous waste of Netflix subscription money being flushed down the toilet. The other, is a reminder that the spy thriller subgenera is still very much alive in Steven Soderbergh's BLACK BAG starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, a flawless film of espionage and intrigue rarely captured this well in cinema. Send us a textWell, that's a wrap on the 97th Academy Awards for 2025 -- and boy did my predictions from the previous episode humble me!Tune in to hear what I got wrong and why -- and what surprised this year more than previous years. Also discussed -- Letterboxd reviews for Netflix's short, political series ZERO DAY, starring Robert De Niro, and Osgood Perkins' latest horror film currently in cinemas THE MONKEY.I also bid -- perhaps for good -- farewell after more than 40 years of love to the James Bond franchise as it's finally been wrested from the hands of the Broccoli family with Amazon's latest coup. What a shame. Now, the James Bond franchise will no longer go forward the way Ian Fleming, Harry Saltzman, Albert R. Broccoli and the Broccoli children Michael G. Wilson and Barbara never intended -- with decisions to be made via committee as the IP of James Bond becomes commodified. It will never be the same. Thank you for listening! Send us a textIn celebration of Rotten Tomatoes' 25-year anniversary (1999 to 2024), top critics were recently approached by the site to put together a list of the TOP 25 FILMS.While their list was commendable, there were several critical omissions that in my opinion invalidate it. (No films were selected between the years 2002 to 2005; and only one female director's work was selected out of the 25 film directors of which some director's work was listed more than once!). Are we really just going to sit idly by and let the Statler & Waldorfs of the cinema declare that no Pixar film or Wes Anderson film in a quarter of a century is worthy of inclusion here? I have compiled my own list that I feel is more inclusive and more encompassing when it comes to the diverse array of film work over the past quarter century because I passionately feel that we've been given better examples of cinema in the past 25 years that were ignored by this coterie of critics for Rotten Tomatoes. They were wrong. Here's my list. Please enjoy.Thank you for listening! Send us a Text Message. There is a disturbance in the Force. Unseen, Sith-like powers operate in the shadows, fomenting hatred, misogyny, and racism targeting anything produced by the Star Wars franchise. As Disney+'s latest Star Wars content to hit the small screen -- The Acolyte -- winds down its first season, despite its glowing reviews from critics, the series has earned the unfortunate distinction of receiving the lowest viewer score in its 50-year franchise history. (And that's saying something considering how risible the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special is). The evidence is clear -- thousands of users have review-bombed it to send a clear and divisive message to Disney and the Star Wars franchise that goes above and beyond the efforts of "Gatekeeping" fans. Join Joe as he explains how far back this has been going on for the Star Wars franchise, who some of the main culprits are behind it, what some cast members have experienced, and why it's getting worse. Are "fans" turning to the Dark Side? Are "fans" letting their hatred flow through them? Tune in to hear Joe offer his analysis. Send us a Text Message.Satire is one of the most effective tools for political and cultural commentary -- and one of the most cherished forms of comedic expression in Western societies. Used appropriately, satire can (as Shakespeare once said) "hold the mirror up to nature" -- and be a catalyst for greater discussion and broader understanding.Or it can make you mad. Really mad. Season 4 of Amazon Prime's breakout television show THE BOYS is finally being recognized by a certain demographic of their audience for what it's always been: political satire aimed at a specific ideology -- and it sure has made people mad.Join Joe as he breaks down what all the fuss is about, why the strong reaction is hypocritical and why satire still matters in our culture.
