Ladyhawke (1985) synopsis: “The thief Gaston escapes the dungeon of medieval Aquila through the latrine. Soldiers are about to kill him when Navarre saves him. Navarre, traveling with his spirited hawk, plans to kill the bishop of Aquila with help from Gaston.”Starring: Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, John Wood, and Michelle PfeifferDirector: Richard DonnerThis week on Podcasting After Dark, Zak and Corey breakdown and review the romantic fantasy film, Ladyhawke! The boys both watched this on cable growing up in the 80s, but it hit differently for little Corey Gorey. See, he had a massive crush on “Isabeau,” played by Michelle Pfeiffer. So much so, in fact, that he learned at a young age what being in love really felt like. Kiwi musician Ladyhawke was a fixture of the late 2000s. In 2009, Pip Brown, better known as Ladyhawke, stormed to number one on the New Zealand albums chart in 2009 with her self-titled debut and hit song ‘My Delirium', leading to a slew of music awards, and international tours. 15 years later, she's coming full circle, performing her debut album at the upcoming ‘Others Way' festival in Auckland. Ladyhawke told Jack Tame that she has a few tours and shows coming up, but wanted to do something special for the 15 year anniversary. “I thought, why don't I do something special and do the first record front to back,” she said. “There's a couple of songs on it that I'd never played live before.” Although festival goers will be the only ones to get the full album experience, Ladyhawke has been playing a few of her older hits on her tours throughout the UK and Australia. “Everyone's just, like, really happy. And I love looking out and seeing everyone singing along,” she told Tame. “I know it's a bit of a nostalgia trip for people, which is, which is awesome for me too.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The name Steven Weston is gaining more prominence, which is well overdue given his impressive career in music. His CV includes an engineering background working with artists ranging from drum and bass act Rudimental to reggae artist Chronixx, while he's toured the world playing keyboards for the likes of Ladyhawke, Charli XCX, and Mikky Ekko. Weston also counts James Lavelle as a fan, having regularly collaborated with the veteran for 10 years now. But his passion lies in deep, progressive music, and since entering the arena he's signed to labels such as Anjunadeep, Bedrock, and Last Night On Earth. With tracks from GMJ, Durante, UNKLE, and Duo State, this Balance Selections mix highlights a music purveyor who lives and breathes the intricacies of the sound he has dedicated himself to. @stevenweston
The year of 1985 was an eventful year for Hollywood, seeing the releases of such timeless classics as "The Goonies", "Back to the Future", and "The Breakfast Club". It also saw the release of this 80s Flick, a medieval fantasy adventure telling the unforgettable tale of two lovers who are placed under a terrible curse. She transforms into a hawk during the day, and he into a wolf by night. Together with the help of a crafty young thief, they must attempt to lift the curse for the sake of true love. So grab your sword, put on your armor, and mount your horse as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts Nicholas Pepin from "Pop Culture Roulette" Podcast and Chad Sheppard discuss “Ladyhawke” from 1985 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: Rutger Hauer has said that one of his proudest moments in this movie was being able to flip the dagger in his hand during the climactic fight without looking at it. Warner Brothers falsely marketed this movie as being based on a true medieval legend. The original screenwriter took the issue to the Writers Guild Association. He won a cash settlement from Warner Brothers, but the medieval legend claim wasn't dropped. Pet bonds are pawsitive change to tenancy laws according to the housing minister. Tweaks to the legislation will mean landlords can charge a pet bond, set at a maximum of two weeks rent, to encourage them to take on tenants with animals. Renters will be liable for any damage accidental or careless caused by pets. The changes wont come in until 2025. Housing Minister Chris Bishop made the anouncement today with his dog Ladyhawke at his side. He speaks to Lisa Owen.

We've fallen behind on editing these Wasteland episodes so we're extending the Appreciation Month topic into the first couple weeks of December as well. So, we hope you don't mind a few more trips heading out into the Dystopian fueled nightmares of the Apocalypse. It's a month long celebration of all things Post-Apocalyptic so you can expect marauders, scavengers, mutants and mayhem, cool car chases, fights over water and fuel, and battles of epic proportions. Coming up next in the dystopian and action mayhem in our 6th episode is a rather obscure sports themed flick with 1989's "THE BLOOD OF HEROES" from writer/director David Webb Peoples (writer of Blade Runner, Leviathan, Ladyhawke, and the Oscar winning Unforgiven). This feature tells of a future where the majority of technology and people have been wiped out and the remaining inhabitants and their sole entertainment is a sport called Jugging...a violent game played with the skull of a dog. The main lead played by the late Rutger Hauer, with the supporting cast portrayed by Joan Chen, Vincent D'Onofrio, Delroy Lindo, and Hugh Keays-Byrne. We foloow our core group as they travel the wastelands from game to game, leading to one of the only few cities where they long to play in the official league. Our deep dive discussion on this grueling flick is headed off by the duo of Cameron Scott with friend and frequent collaborator Gary Hill (Cinema Beef / The Last Call At Torchy's Podcast). Join them and buckle in because it's going to be a wild ride! "I don't like brutality. I like heroics. I like the blood of heroes."

Anna is a writer who received her B.A. in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago and M.A. in Film Studies from Chapman University. Her dark comedy short She Had It Coming was an Official Selection of 25 film festivals with several awards won for it among them. Derek is an attorney who also likes movies. Should you watch ‘Ladyhawke' from 1985? Part 2/2. The exciting conclusion to our 80s flashback review of The Curse of The Bishop of Aquila. Enjoy!
Astrologer Dena DeCastro returns to tell us how we can take advantage of two upcoming October eclipses to benefit our lives. In this interview, we learn that eclipses are not rare. We also learn why an eclipse is such a great device to use in Hollywood. According to Dena, “There is a spooky, supernatural quality to the whole idea of an eclipse. Something is literally being interrupted [in] the natural order, and it's a moment of pause. And you can look at that and be kind of spooked out, or you can look at it and say, ‘Wow! Isn't that the coolest thing ever, and I'm going to ride with that energy and do something productive with it.'” Visit BigSeance.com/232 for more info. She has been a counseling astrologer for over twenty years and has been teaching astrology since the mid 2000s. She received her astrological training through Steven Forrest's Apprenticeship Program, and holds two Master's Degrees. Her articles have been featured in The Mountain Astrologer magazine, and she has appeared on many podcasts and local radio shows over the years. She also hosted The Sirius Astrology Podcast (2007-2014), one of the first astrology podcasts. In 2021, Dena and fellow astrologer Katie Sloan created the Let's Get Real Astrology podcast, which they co-host. She currently provides individual readings, as well as mentorship for those who want to learn astrology. Her new book, Foundations of Astrology: A Workbook for Beginners is available on Amazon and via her website denadecastro.com. :51 The last time Dena was on the show, Patrick pushed her into appearing LIVE for the first time. Has she been LIVE since? 2:42 Looking back on Dena's forecast for 2022, and a reminder that she does not predict the future in her astrology work! 5:05 A discussion on the unusual 1980 Horror/Fantasy Disney film, The Watcher in the Woods, starring Bette Davis, which features some really fascinating and dramatic eclipse themes. 7:20 Let's talk about eclipses! They occur in pairs, two weeks apart, about every six months. We have two eclipses coming up in October, on the 14th and the 28th! The current series of eclipses is in the Aries/Libra polarity, which began in April. We have a final Taurus/Scorpio polarity eclipse on October 28th. When an eclipse falls in the sign of the north node, it is calling us to aspire to move toward the positive aspects of that sign. This was the case with April's eclipse in Aries: the calling was to integrate the high side of Aries, because that is also the sign of the transiting north node. In contrast, on the upcoming eclipse of October 14th, the shadow side of Libra is more likely to show up. The invitation is to become aware of our own Libra shadow behaviors, and to release them. 9:17 Solar Eclipse and Lunar Eclipse 10:26 Patrick reflects on seeing and experiencing a solar eclipse in 2017 with an entire student body of a middle school! 11:53 The astrology of an eclipse and the transiting nodes. 13:20 The south node is where the shadow material coming up for the collective resides. 15:25 The upcoming October 14th solar eclipse will bring up an awareness and an opportunity to work through and to set intentions around doing good work with the Libra shadow. 16:06 Two weeks before and two weeks after the eclipse is the most potent window, and Dena likes to call the intensified period between two eclipses, the “Eclipse Portal.” Before October 14th — “What do you want to let go of around old relationship patterns?” “What new things do you want to invite in in your relationship life?” 16:50 The October 28th lunar eclipse. Wrap up things you've been working on regarding security, money, safety, and staying grounded. Acknowledge the work and progress you've made and release. 20:53 Purging and letting go. Dena uses Patrick, who is an Aries, as an example of how you can apply the astrology of eclipses in your life. “Were there any significant changes in the spring regarding vitality, health, creativity, or sense of self?” 22:40 Dena continues using Patrick as an example, looking at the Libra qualities in him (as that is the opposite of his sun sign). “Looking at the balance of your relationships, how is it supporting the new things that you've kicked off and started?” 26:25 Dena has succeeded at a daily meditation practice and is seeing the benefits! 29:24 We have even more eclipses coming up! Consider having a new or full moon ritual, or meeting with an eclipse group. 32:43 “There is a spooky, supernatural quality to the whole idea of an eclipse. Something is literally being interrupted [in] the natural order, and it's a moment of pause. And you can look at that and be kind of spooked out, or you can look at it and say, ‘Wow! Isn't that the coolest thing ever?', and ‘I'm going to ride with that energy and do something productive with it.'” 34:57 The eclipse in the 1985 film, Ladyhawke. 36:54 “Eclipses are not rare. They're a regular, cyclic phenomenon that we can all use and enjoy in our lives.” 40:01 Dena's great blog posts, and a recent Let's Get Real Astrology episode, that you can use as a resource! 42:50 Do you struggle to read or understand your basic natal chart? Dena does readings, has a mentorship program, and you can check out her book, Foundations of Astrology: A Workbook for Beginners. 44:35 Outro 47:45 A special THANK YOU to Patreon supporters at the Super Paranerd and Parlor Guest level! 49:05 For more on Dena DeCastro DenaDeCastro.com Blog Posts: The Eclipses of Fall 2023 The Eclipses of Spring 2023 Let's Get Real Astrology Podcast Facebook Instagram Twitter Previous Big Seance Podcast episodes with Dena: 53, 61, 65, 112, 134, 166, and 203. Oh, dear God. Someone let those boys make another episode. This week, Justus takes a trip down memory lane and introduces David to a staple of his childhood, Richard Donner's oft-forgotten fantasy romance Ladyhawke. What the hell is Ferris Bueller doing here? Why is Rutger Hauer so incredibly sexy? How many shit-covered characters can you put in one movie? I'm sorry, did that evil bishop make a deal with SATAN?! And most importantly, is this the Greatest Movie Ever Made? These answers and more on this week's episode! Ladyhawke (1985) is directed by Richard Donner and stars Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Leo McKern and John Wood. Music: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio

Sorry for the delay, beloved listeners, and sorry again that we are missing another Sneople on this ep (Matty this time), but thrilled to announce the topic is a fun one worth waiting for - we're talking color and Technicolor this week! Starting off with the movie that inspired the topic (Ladyhawke (1985)), the Sneople move onto Technicolor film and why they enjoy it/what makes it so impressive. From there, they move onto color as a whole and some of their uses of color in film. Helena also discusses her decades project in more detail and the duo return to Ladyhawke at the end to talk about the careers of the three main actors - Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, and Michelle Pfeiffer! This is an open call to all fic writers to get started on making more Ladyhawke AUs - please and thank you!
