You'll learn why “boredom is better than bingeing,” and how to stop using bingeing as a (harmful) solution for boredom. Since you can't avoid all feelings of boredom, it's crucial to know that you can be bored and still not binge; but you don't have to stay stuck in boredom either. From there, the discussion returns to Bagby, as he reflects on one of the most beloved chapters of his career: Disney's modern classic HOCUS POCUS. Bagby shares behind-the-scenes memories, the unexpected cultural longevity of the film, and how its enduring popularity reshaped both his career and his connection with audiences. Bagby also pulls back the curtain on working with Academy Award winners Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in James Mangold's WALK THE LINE. Jeff Hupp remains an essential voice throughout the conversation, offering thoughtful insight into Bagby's creative journey, their shared work on BAND ON THE RUN, and the rare chemistry that develops when actor and filmmaker truly trust one another. Together, Bagby and Hupp reflect on how their collaboration strengthened the film's emotional core — and hint at the possibility of future projects still to come. The episode reaches a special, intimate highlight when Bagby performs a live, original song from BAND ON THE RUN, giving listeners a powerful glimpse into his artistry as both a musician and storyteller.Warm, reflective, and full of heart, Part Two celebrates not only Bagby's enduring career, but also the collaborative spirit between artist and filmmaker — bringing this two-part Fixate & Binge journey to a thoughtful and inspiring close. Please note: Due to minor technical issues during recording, some audio may feature a slight echo — thank you for your patience and understanding.Thank you for listening! Send us a textWriter/director Jeff Hupp joins The Fixate & Binge Podcast to discuss his 2025 indie feature BAND ON THE RUN— a heartfelt, DIY road-trip film shot in just eight days that captures a fleeting moment in the late 1990s Detroit Garage Rock scene.Centered on the rock trio 'Hot Freaks', the film follows drummer Jesse Grant (Matthew Perl) as he rallies his bandmates to chase a last-chance opportunity to play SXSW, hoping to escape the gravitational pull of dead-end jobs and inherited disappointment. What begins as a familiar “band on the road” story becomes something more intimate when Jesse's paraplegic father (Larry Bagby) joins the journey — grounding the film in a deeply human exploration of ambition, regret, and the fragile bond between parent and child. In this conversation, Hupp reflects on Detroit's often-overlooked music history, the realities of ultra-low-budget filmmaking, his own background in advertising, and why Band on the Run is ultimately less about success than the courage to try. Drawing inspiration from films like ALMOST FAMOUS and THE COMMITMENTS, the episode celebrates artists who dare to take their shot — even when the odds are stacked against them.Band on the Run is now streaming on Amazon Prime!Thank you for listening! ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER: Paul Thomas Anderson vs. the New American Order

Send us a textIn this solo episode of The Fixate & Binge Podcast, host Joe Curdy dives headfirst into ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER — Paul Thomas Anderson's most politically charged and urgent film to date. (And, on a personal note, Joe also pulls back the curtain to reveal two major reasons why he is usually very positive about rating films!)Based on Thomas Pynchon's 1990 novel Vineland, Anderson's latest work unfolds as a sprawling and provocative look at revolution, authoritarianism, and the fight for human dignity in a fractured America. Through Joe's lens, this episode explores how Anderson translates Pynchon's chaos and satire into a modern reflection of the world today — where undocumented immigrants are hunted and forcibly deported by a draconian U.S. government under Donald J. Trump's leadership. With spoilers throughout, Joe shares his Letterboxd review and a deeply personal reflection on the film's themes, visual style, and political relevance. ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER isn't just another PTA epic — it's a call to look at the moral decay beneath the surface of American life, and a cinematic act of resistance against the “New American Order.”Whether you're a longtime Paul Thomas Anderson devotee or simply curious how cinema can mirror our modern political reality, this episode offers a raw, unfiltered deep dive into a film that's bound to spark conversation.⚠️ Spoiler Disclaimer:This episode contains major spoilers for ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER.
