Our guest this week is now appearing on movie theater screens in The Color Purple, recreating the role of Sofia that she originated in the Broadway revival. But as you'll hear, that is just her latest achievement in an ever-growing body of work on stage, screen and television. Fans of Orange is the New Black knew her as Taystee, and followers of the recent series Peacemaker could see yet another facet of her boundless talent. A graduate of Juilliard, she is riding high during this awards season but Leonard and Jessie agree that we'll be watching her in every medium imaginable for years to come.
One of the "The Color Purple's" leading ladies-- Danielle Brooks-- has been a star since the world first fell in love with her as Taystee on Netflix's "Orange is the New Black." Since then, her standing-ovation worthy performances onscreen and onstage have made us love her more. But, her journey to this point did not come easy. In this episode of "The Healed Girl Era Podcast," she talks to Gia about how she navigated the pitfalls of "overnight success," how OITNB led her back to therapy, her relationship with rejection and how God's full circle moments keep her inspired to keep going no matter what.To watch the full video version of the interview, head to Youtube.com/Gia.Peppers. #HealedGirlEraPod

Danielle Brooks got her big break as Taystee, the lovable leader in Netflix's Orange is the New Black. That character was only meant to appear in a few episodes but wound up becoming the anchor for one of the show's most poignant story arcs. But it shouldn't be a surprise that Danielle's talents stretched a bit part into a featured role. She's always had leading lady potential—and she's proving just that with her starring role as gospel legend Mahalia Jackson in Lifetime's biopic Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia. In this episode, Danielle explains how she proved her leading lady abilities both in front of and behind the camera, why she almost turned down Orange is the New Black; and why Hollywood fame was never her goal.
Danielle Brooks is a renaissance woman and one of our absolute favorite entertainers! Whether it’s her incredible performance as Taystee in Orange Is The New Black or her dynamite portrayal of Sofia in The Color Purple on Broadway, Danielle is making her presence felt as a leading lady. We sat down with her for an intimate discussion about her life since becoming a mother, how she’ll choose roles moving forward and what it took to portray the legendary Mahalia Jackson. Don’t forget your shades because the Black Girl Magic is shining bright this week! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Danielle Brooks is an accomplished actress and Juilliard graduate. You know her as Taystee in Netflix's Orange is the New Black. She's done Shakespeare and was also nominated for a Tony for her role of Sofia in the 2015 Broadway production The Color Purple. In November of 2019, Danielle gave birth to her daughter, Freeya. This episode is all about giving and receiving mom advice. Danielle joined Hilaria and Daphne right in the streets of Brooklyn—because in reality, being a mom means adapting to the situation at hand, and that's just what Danielle did. She talked about her pregnancy, her C-section, and why she wants to move back to the south. They also cover the subject of race and how Danielle will prepare her daughter for the world. You'll hear great advice and honest conversation (plus, a train or two in the background, and probably a crying baby)!Favorite Things:Daphne: Loum Stress Detox Enzymatic CleanserHilaria: Patched & Sewn SweatsuitsDanielle: Be You: Affirmation CardsEmail us with your questions at mombrainpod@gmail.com and follow us on Instagram, just search for @MomBrain. Connie talks Season 6 of Orange is the New Black with guest host Bec. Topics include our love of Young Carol and her Big Dick Energy, Daddy and her game and how much we hate Madison. We also touch on our favorite show ship Piper and Alex and how Drugs and Lesbianism help pass the time in prison. We share our sadness over the system not working for Taystee and Blanca when it comes to justice and immigration.
One quarter of women who are released from prison are arrested again within six months of release. Like these women, Susan Burton, founder of A New Way of Life, was in and out of prison throughout her early adulthood. She joins host Piper Kerman to talk about the cycle of incarceration, a cycle Danielle Brooks’ character Taystee also experienced throughout the seven seasons of Orange is the New Black. In this series finale, hosts April Whisenhant and Francesca discuss the impact that Pennsatucky's death is having, Suzanne growing up and Taystee sticking around for the long haul. We are SO excited to see Gloria and Blanca get the happy endings that they deserve and predict that more will get a better ending in the future. We talk about the major influence that #OITNB has had on society and what is has taught all of us. Breaking down the Top 3 most pivotal moments in the history of the show was tough but we had to give it to Poussey. Join in the discussion! Follow our hosts: @aprilwhisenhant @xoxocesca ABOUT ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK Orange is the New Black comes from "Weeds" creator Jenji Kohan about a women's prison drama with comedy that takes no prisoners. Based on the acclaimed memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman, the series is about engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman, whose decade-old relationship with drug-runner Alex results in her arrest and year-long detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper must trade her comfortable New York life with fiancé Larry, for an orange prison jumpsuit and a baffling prison culture where she is forced to question everything she believes about herself and the world at large. As she struggles to adjust to her new reality, she finds unexpected laughter, tears, conflict and camaraderie amidst an eccentric and outspoken group of inmates. Hosts April Whisenhant and Breanna Chianne break down the shocking penultimate episode. Pennsatucky thinks she failed her GED exam and returns to drugs, resulting in a fatal overdose. Taystee’s lawyer tells her that Suzanne’s book is not good enough evidence and shuts down her dreams of being exonerated for a murder that she didn’t commit. Hence, potentially turning her back to suicide. A flashback from our favorite Poussey Washington warms Taystee’s heart and of course, ours, and hopefully puts her in a better mindset.
