We're revisiting one of our favorite stories from years ago — with a new twist. Laura Rothenberg spent most of her life knowing she would die young. She had cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder that affects the lungs. She documented her life in an audio diary, showing her attempt to live the normal life of a nineteen year old college student. Laura died in 2003 — but her audio diary wasn't all she left behind. You can find Laura Rothenberg's book of poetry, When Poetry Visits, at https://www.codhill.com/product/when-poetry-visits/#:~:text=The%20poems%20in%20this%20collection,people%20do%20by%20old%20age. You can also find Laura's memoir, Breathing for a Living, at Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Thanks to Taylor Schilling for featuring in this episode. Special thanks to Bryan Doerries and Mary Rothenberg.

My next guest is a Congolese Puerto Rican artist Anna Uzele who co-costarred in the Apple TV+ series Dear Edward, alongside Connie Britton and Taylor Schilling, and recently starred on Broadway as Francine in the Kander & Ebb Broadway musical New York New York. Previously, she originated the role of Cartherine Parr in the North American tour and Broadway debut of SIX.  Anna Uzele, is an artist whose journey is a testament to the complexity of maintaining one's identity amidst the expectations of faith and the pressures of a highly demanding career. Our conversation, sheds light on the topics of balancing personal beliefs with professional aspirations, the critical role of self-care in the entertainment industry, and the profound search for authenticity in one's work. The discussion begins with Anna's upbringing in an evangelical Christian family and how her homeschooling years shaped her initial understanding of the world. Homeschooled until the eighth grade, Anna was then exposed to the vibrant diversity of a performing arts high school, which marked a significant transition in her life. The stark contrast between her religious upbringing and the liberal environment of the arts school laid the foundation for an ongoing exploration of self. This duality of her life, caught between the tenets of faith and the lure of the stage, presented challenges and opportunities that would deeply influence her career choices and personal growth.Self-care emerges as a prominent theme in our dialogue. Anna shares personal anecdotes about the demanding nature of Broadway and the toll it can take on an artist's physical and emotional well-being. The need to recognize and address the signs of burnout, to implement strategies that support one's mental and physical health, and to sometimes take a step back from the relentless pursuit of success Support the showTAKE YOUR MINDFULNESS & INSIGHTS ONE STEP FURTHER WITH PREMIUM MEDITATIONSSubscribe to premium content today and have access to bonus episodes worksheets and meditations. Orange is the new Black is an American comedy-drama on Netflix which was released in 2013.The seven-season-long show is based on Piper Kerman's memoir of the same name. The series showcases the hardships of life in prison and spotlights, among other things, taboos associated with being convicted, illegal immigration, racism and harassment. Here are a few interesting facts about this great show that you probably didn't know about.1. The title sequence consists of close-ups of the faces of real former inmates, including a quick shot of Piper Kerman. You can identify Kerman from her blue eyes. 2. A hacker leaked a few of Season 5 episodes even before its official release. Though the hacker demanded a ransom from Netflix with a threat to leak all the episodes of that season, Netflix did not respond, due to which 10 out of 13 episodes got leaked.3. Taylor Schilling, who plays Piper Kerman, injured herself during the filming of an intimate scene. While taking her shirt off, the prison name tag caught on the side of her mouth, giving her a small cut. The shoot was halted for an hour to make sure the injury wasn't severe.4. This is the only show on TV to receive Emmy nominations for the Best Comedy Series in 2014 and the Best Drama Series in 2015. This was because of a change in the Emmy Awards rule stating that all shows running longer than 30 minutes per episode must be classified as dramas. If you haven't watched this series yet, then catch it streaming exclusively on NetflixWell that's some lesser-known trivia about the hit series “Orange is the new Black”, I shall be back again tomorrow with a brand new episode until then it's your host Nikhil outta here.

The Titan features Sam Worthington, Taylor Schilling, Tom Wilkinson, Agyness Deyn, and Nathalie Emmanuel in what will hopefully be remembered as the worst roles in each of their careers. Russ and Jared have a lot to say about this one, so stay tuned for part 2 on Thursday!

Today's guest is Harry Josh, one of the most sought-after editorial stylists in the world. Before his freelance career took off, Harry was doing double duty as a celebrity hairdresser and casting director for Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton. Now, Harry's days are filled doing editorial work for Harper's Bazaar, British Vogue, GQ, Allure, and other leading fashion magazines. In 2013, he launched his namesake hair tool line: Harry Josh® Pro Tools. His much-lauded Pro Dryer 2000 is a favorite of celebrities, stylists and real men and women alike. Today, Harry Josh® Pro Tools consists of two hair dryers, two curling irons, a flat iron, a diffuser, and an array of brushes, combs and clips. Harry has touched the heads of Rose Byrne, Olivia Wilde, Taylor Schilling, Kate Bosworth, Hillary Swank, Ellen Pompeo, Christy Turlington, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Kaia Gerber, Karlie Kloss and Gisele. In this episode we talk about a variety of topics including Harry's persistence working in the industry for 12 years before getting his big break. Harry recalls how his job as a casting director helped him forge relationships with models and how those friendships essentially placed himself in front of Amy Astley, the former beauty editor of Vogue at that time. We also dive deeper into the power of mindset and how he's cultivated an abundant one throughout his career. He notes that his struggles taught him how to focus on the present and to always remain true to his passion for education and empowering others through his work. Harry reiterates that happiness is a choice and not based on circumstances. We also discuss the benefits of meditation and the mind, how to stay present in a digital world, and how he's taking all his lessons from his extensive and impressive career to make an impact in the beauty industry today. I crave more sex- and age-positivity, a wider range of human sexuality and relationship, in the romantic TV shows and movies that I watch now. Romance novels have always done a great job at representing shame-free sexuality, desire, and fantasy. But the Netflix series Easy and the movie The Overnight also get it right.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comSalt-n-Pepa Let's Talk About Sex. The late 80s-early 90s style in this video! It dates from 1991 and wow, things were different back then. But the ladies got it goin' on: let's talk about it.A good, brief definition of the different types of human sexuality. I love that they point out that sexuality can change throughout your life.Britannica has a fascinating worldwide sociological overview of human sexuality. There's even a good section on solo sex :)What it means to be on the asexual spectrum. It's possible to have hot sex and intimacy without intercourse.  Here's an excellent article full of ideas on how to go about it.Movie/TV ShowAn exploration of the lo-fi, indie mumblecore film movement.Joe Swanberg created, wrote, directed and co-produced the TV series Easy which is quite a feat. Just look at the size of that cast! The range of subjects! The Overnight works because of the cast. I've crushed on Adam Scott for ages, and he's the perfect straight man here -– the main reason this even works. Ditto for Jason Schwartzman. Taylor Schilling and Judith Godrèche are also amazing. The Duplass Brothers produced this movie, and they're also big in the mumblecore movement. The Amazon TV series Transparent is a touching tragicomedy about a trio of LA-based siblings who struggle with sex, love and relationships, while supporting their father coming out as trans. Jay Duplass stars in this show, and he's so good in it. It's a small world.BooksI can't say enough about the respectful, passionate way Naomi and Ethan relate in The Intimacy Experiment. It's mostly a slow burn, but when things heat up, they heat up. Check out The Roommate, too, which defines a steamy, sex-positive plot. The Belle and the Beard by Kate Canterbary is a clever and sexy romance, loosely based on Beauty and the Beast. It features a Southern-born, super-capable woman with childhood trauma and a grumpy arborist hero who identifies as pansexual. He's been in love with a man in his past, and now he loves her. I love romances that bring the emotional baggage, as well as sex positivity, to relationship. It makes the story richer, deeper, and more compelling.

On this episode of The First Run, Chris runs through all the films he saw at this year's Gasparilla Film Festival. First up is the dramatic tech thriller, ‘The Hummingbird Project', starring Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Salma Hayek. Eisenberg and Skarsgård are business partners trying to get the fastest possible speed for online trading and thereby making themselves filthy rich. Hayek is their former boss with her own designs. There's the always relatively fascinating rundown of the big Blu-Ray & DVD releases, featuring the Straight to DVD and Streaming Picks of the Week. Then it's on to the Horror Shorts; ‘Latched', ‘Lullaby', and ‘Thread'. Next up is A24 Irish import, ‘The Whole In The Ground'. A young mom and her son move to the countryside and he disappears for a short time. Upon his return, something just isn't quite right… We're not done yet though as Taylor Schilling stars in, ‘Family'. Schilling is the no-nonsense Aunt who never has time for her family due to her dedication to her job. And she's a bit of a jerk. So how does the Insane Clown Posse save the day? Finally, the Japanese horror/comedy, ‘One Cut Of The Dead' closes out the show. A director is tasked with making a ‘one take' zombie show. But what happens when zombies actually show up? The Critical Breakdown: A Film Podcast

Mix a hunky heartthrob, a pretty-yet-down-to-earth lady, and some background noise set in a seaside town and what do you get? Well, any Nicholas Sparks movie, but this time around, we'll call it The Lucky One (2012).    Which is what we watched this week! This film stars Zac Efron as a newly returned Iraq War veteran looking to find his good luck charm, played by dog kennel owning Taylor Schilling. Blythe Danner is also in this, as the quirky grandmother who wants to get her a piece of that tasty Zefron.   We establish what makes a Sparks romance work, as well as what this film did right and wrong. We round the episode out by playing a game we call Sparks or Not Sparks, where Max has to guess what are actual Nicholas Sparks movies based on synopsis alone.  If you have a lot of thoughts about Nicholas Sparks movies, hit us up at TheCriticalBreakdownPodcast@gmail.com! Or leave us a review on iTunes, Stitcher, or any other podcatcher around.
