Episode Topic: A Conversation with Aleida Rodríguez Listen in to an oral history conversation with award-winning poet Aleida Rodríguez, interviewed by Karla Yaritza Maravilla Zaragoza, English Ph.D. student and a Joseph Gaia Distinguished Fellow in Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Aleida discusses how a fortuitous 1973 call from a pay phone in a Chinese restaurant marked the beginning of her career as a published writer, and how ‘rare bird,' the term of endearment she shared with her childhood best friend, became the inspiration for her to found rara avis literary magazine and Books of a Feather press, both the first to be founded by a woman, Latina, and lesbian in Los Angeles history.Featured Speakers:Karla Yaritza Maravilla Zaragoza, University of Notre DameAleida Rodríguez, poetRead this episode's recap over on the University of Notre Dame's open online learning community platform, ThinkND: https://go.nd.edu/2f8cf5.This podcast is a part of the ThinkND Series titled Letra Latinas.

Listen in as Jaime Jo Wright chats with Sarah Sundin about her latest WWII release! As the German army invades the Netherlands in 1940, Aleida van der Zee Martens escapes to London to wait out the Occupation. It might have to do with the fact that it's Sarah Sundin or even WWII. Maybe it's because we're dealing with the Blitz and yet not just England's resilience in the wake of its destruction. But I suspect I'm going to love this book because Sarah Sundin took a heartbreaking fact of WWII history that many of us don't know about and put it on the page in a different setting to showcase it. Listen in to see how and why that happens in Embers in the London Sky. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Why This Book Promises to Be One of My 2024 Favorites! When Sarah Sundin writes WWII fiction people take up and notice. Why? Because she's been doing it longer than most. Because of her thorough research. And perhaps especially because of her attention to detail. When you pick up one of her novels, you know you're going to feel as if you're there. I won't pretend I'm glad I didn't have to live through The Blitz and that my only real experience with it will be when I read this book. I also forgot to ask about research materials. I'm gonna need those. Hmmm... Oh, Sarah! But Embers in the London Sky blends the heartbreak of loss of home and family with the focused destruction and attempted demoralization of England. If that's not hard enough, Sarah throws in a few murders to keep things interesting. Or something. EEEP! If that isn't a recipe for excellent fiction, I don't know what is! It’s a gold rush in space! Okay, maybe an iridium rush, as everyone on Earth wants to grab Goldilocks, the $20 trillion asteroid. But things are more complicated than that, of course. Danielle is stuck in an episode of “Lost,” having flashbacks to dark times. Kelly and Aleida have to deal with a rash decision made by Dev. And is Ed Baldwin this season’s… villain? This week we’ve got an upstairs/downstairs thing going on at Happy Valley, where newbie Miles is learning about black market speakeasies and base commander Danielle is enjoying some fresh pasta. Back on Earth, Kelly and Aleida join forces to TP things and build a business, and they’re all out of toilet paper. Back on Earth, Kelly and Aleida join forces to TP things and build a business, and they’re all out of toilet paper. Welcome to our series coverage of For All Mankind (on Apple TV+) by Story Archives. Join us week to week as we cover the hit Apple TV Plus show and it's interesting retelling of how history would have unraveled had the space race never ended. In episode two of season four titled, ‘Have a nice Sol', Danielle and Miles have arrived on Mars to two very different realities. While the higher-ranking officials up top live more comfortable lives in Happy Valley Base, those below like Miles, are met with harsh living conditions. Luckily for them, it seems Danielle is going to make things better. Meanwhile on Earth, Aleida teams up with Kelly Baldwin in an effort to continue pushing forward Kelly's research outside of Nasa. Lastly, Margo gets a harsh dose of Soviet reality. For All Mankind is an American science fiction drama television series created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi and produced for Apple TV+. The series dramatizes an alternate history depicting "what would have happened if the global space race had never ended" after the Soviet Union succeeds in the first crewed Moon landing ahead of the United States. The title is inspired by the lunar plaque left on the Moon by the crew of Apollo 11, which reads, in part, "We Came in Peace for All Mankind". In 1986 Dr Aleida Guevara, the daughter of revolutionary icon Che Guevara, went to Angola to work as a paediatrician. Dr Aleida was one of a number of medics Fidel Castro's Cuban government sent to their fellow communist country in southern Africa as it emerged from Portuguese colonialism into civil war. Marcia Veiga hears how Dr Aleida treated children with cholera in a hospital in the Angolan capital Luanda. Dr Aleida also reveals how, during downtime from working as Cuba's minister of industries, her tired father played with her by carrying her on his back as if he were a horse. The music for this programme is from Dadifox and Receba. (Photo: Dr Aleida Guevara with a patient at Luanda's Josina Machel Hospital. Credit: Dr Aleida Guevara)

Vinga, anem a aplaudir. [Ah.] I és que l'Aleida… Saps què vull dir, no? Para-t'ho a pensar, sisplau. Andreu: [2:40] Ja. Sílvia: [2:41] Amb el masculí no ho diem. Andreu: [2:42] Bé, en qualsevol cas, per si algú no ho té en ment, us he preparat aquí tres àudios molt breus, molt breus, en què podem sentir l'Aleida dir això. Aleida: [2:50] Per què vas triar aquesta professió? Què ho fa que tens aquesta feina? Qui és aquesta noia? Andreu: [2:56] Bé, doncs són aquests tres casos, no? Sílvia: [3:00] Clar. Nosaltres diríem aquesta feina, aquesta noia i aquesta professió. Perquè ells no ho feien, això. No… no deien aqueta. Sempre… Sempre ho diu. Sílvia: [3:37] Però jo em sé totes les cançons d'Els Pets i no… no ho he notat. Andreu: [3:41] No? Sílvia: [3:41] Potser no m'hi he fixat. Andreu: [3:43] Fixa-t'hi, fixa-t'hi, perquè és probable que… que digui aqueta.
