In this episode, Kirk Behrendt talks with Sameer Bhasin of CareCredit about building reliable, measurable systems that make unscheduled dentistry visible, tighten the diagnose-to-schedule pathway, and improve follow-through so patients get the care they need without adding more chaos to the schedule. You'll learn how to create an actionable dashboard, protect procedure time, clean up revenue cycle habits, and use technology to amplify (not replace) your workflow. Listen to Episode 1050 of The Best Practices Show!Main Takeaways:Most private practices aren't short on diagnosing treatment; they're short on conversion and follow-through.Unscheduled dentistry should be broken down into a dashboard by timeframe, procedure type, value tier, and patient readiness so it becomes actionable.A strong diagnose-to-schedule pathway requires consistent handoffs, clear “why now,” and protecting schedule time for the procedures you want to do.Production on paper isn't the same as performance because value is often lost in handoffs, case acceptance, scheduling, and collections.Clean revenue cycle discipline includes early benefit verification, collecting patient portions appropriately, and consistent weekly AR and aging-claims follow-up.Technology should amplify an existing workflow (analytics, reminders, online scheduling guardrails) rather than replace human follow-up and accountability. As a benchmark, about 10% of patients should be applying for third-party financing to ensure financial options are part of the process, not an afterthought.Snippets:00:00 Unscheduled dentistry is the opportunity most practices aren't working.08:23 How to build an unscheduled treatment dashboard by time, procedure, and value tier.11:52 Standardizing the diagnose-to-schedule pathway and creating urgency with the “next best appointment.”15:40 What a “clean revenue cycle” looks like and why write-offs are a major hidden problem.18:05 Technology amplifies a workflow; it doesn't replace one.20:10 The metrics Samir watches, including the 10% financing application benchmark.23:10 The “Great Wall of China” myth and how misconceptions show up in practice systems.26:55 Approval rate realities and why you can't get approvals without applications.33:00 What a CareCredit practice review reveals and how it's used to find opportunities.35:45 A simple action plan: pull the last 90 days of unscheduled dentistry and call the top 20 patients.Guest Bio/Guest Resources:Sameer Bhasin, Vice President of Strategic Alliances at CareCredit, is responsible for working with dentistry's key opinion leaders and educators to gather the latest insights and trends. Sherrie shares her journey from single mom working at Pizza Hut to becoming a dental assistant training developer and speaker, along with the lessons she learned from failure, rejection, burnout, and personal growth. The conversation also explores the role of DSOs, mentorship, continuing education, and the importance of taking initiative in your career. In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo sits down with Jenna Ellsworth, National Account Manager for CareCredit, to tackle one of the most common — and costly — moments in any practice: the patient who was ready to say yes, but walked out the door anyway. Why does this keep happening? Steve and Jenna make the case that price objections are rarely just about money. More often, they're a signal that the patient wasn't given the right information, at the right moment, in the right way. And in most practices, that conversation is happening too late — or not at all. From when to introduce financing options during the patient journey, to how doctors and staff can bring it up naturally without feeling like a sales pitch, this episode offers a practical roadmap for keeping more patients in-house and helping them actually follow through on the care you're recommending. If you've ever watched a patient hesitate at checkout — or leave to "think about it" — this episode will change how you think about the price conversation and give your team the tools to have it with confidence.   To register for Vision Forward, visit idoc.net to reserve your spot.    Follow our Podcast on All Available Platforms Follow our Podcast on Instagram Follow IDOC on Facebook Follow IDOC on LinkedIn Watch our Podcast Video on YouTube

What if the reason you feel drained at work is not the workload, but the lack of feeling valued? In this episode, Kevin Henry explores a question that sparked powerful conversations among dental assistants across multiple states. When was the last time you truly felt valued in your practice? The answers reveal how appreciation often shows up in small but meaningful ways, from a simple thank you to being recognized for clinical skills, patient relationships, teamwork, and the unseen preparation that keeps a practice running smoothly. Through stories shared at the roundtable, this episode unpacks what real appreciation looks like in dental practices and why feeling valued has such a direct impact on fulfillment, confidence, and team culture. Kevin reflects on moments when doctors, coworkers, and even patients made dental assistants feel seen, respected, and essential. He also addresses the harder reality that many assistants feel overlooked or taken for granted, offering perspective on how to recognize your own value even when others fail to express it. This conversation is a reminder that being valued is not always about grand recognition. Sometimes it is found in trust, gratitude, collaboration, and the quiet moments when you realize the difference you make every day. Whether you feel deeply appreciated in your role or are struggling to find that sense of worth right now, this episode offers encouragement, reflection, and practical insight into the value dental assistants bring to patients, practices, and the profession. ------------------- Dental assistants play a powerful role in whether patients move forward with treatment. In this episode, Kathryn Gilliam and Kevin Henry dive into the often overlooked role dental assistants play in patient care, especially when it comes to oral and head and neck cancer detection. Kathryn shares why assistants should be trained to perform both intraoral and extraoral screenings and how these quick checks can be done in just a few minutes during routine appointments. The conversation highlights how assistants are uniquely positioned to notice abnormalities, educate patients, and support early diagnosis even in individuals with no obvious risk factors. They also discuss how assistants can confidently communicate their desire to grow within the practice, take on more responsibility, and elevate their impact on patient outcomes. Dental assistants must know these hidden drug risks in patients Dental assistants are often the first line of defense in patient safety, especially when patients use opioids, kratom, or other substances that may not appear on standard drug tests. Many patients do not disclose what they take, which increases the risk of dangerous drug interactions, oversedation, and medical emergencies during treatment. Building trust, asking clear health history questions, and documenting patient responses carefully helps protect the dentist's license, the dental team, and the patient's wellbeing.
