El final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial no ocurrió para algunos soldados japoneses diseminados por diferentes islas en el Pacífico. Son los denominados "rezagados". En la mentalidad japonesa no hay cabida para el pensamiento de rendirse en combate ya que se considera una deshonra inaceptable. Para algunos soldados japoneses la guerra seguía su curso y las informaciones sobre el fin de la contienda eran desinformación del enemigo. Uno de ellos fue el teniente japonés Hirō Onoda que, junto a 3 compañeros entendía que la guerra no había acabado en la Isla de Lúbang. Otro carismático personaje fue Shoichi Yokoi, destinado a la islas Marianas y que también negó la realidad junto a dos compañeros de armas. Y por último Teruo Nakamura, de origen taiwanés, que permaneció en guerra por su cuenta en una isla de Indonesia durante varios años. Cuando finalmente se rindió, su historia paso desapercibida en Japón en comparación a los otros soldados.
