Hi, everyone! I'm thrilled to bring you my annual Christmas replay. This is not just one of my favorite episodes of the year—it's one of my favorite episodes of all time. If you haven't heard it before, you're in for a treat. If you heard it at the beginning of the year, I promise it's worth a second listen. Either way, enjoy! Tim Myers does a bit of everything: he's a writer, songwriter, storyteller, visual artist, and senior lecturer at Santa Clara University, where he teaches writing. We got together to talk about the nature of creativity, which Tim calls a “sacred mystery,” including everything from the way our childhood creativity is changed by the culture as we become adults, the necessary role of play in the creative process, the transcendent experiences of awe and wonder and how they fuel us, the wisdom of following your gut, and a whole lot more. Episode breakdown: 01:39 Kids are instantly creative, often play traditionally. 06:50 Creativity influenced by nature, nurture, educators. 15:50 Importance of creativity in education and society. 21:22 Differences between play in childhood versus "professional" adults. 24:56 Nancy switched to teaching, advisor, and writing lit mag. 30:49 Encouraging exploration of language and creative thinking. 37:04 Parents see child, lifetime of giving love. 40:35 Zen story about finding wonder in life. 45:27 Believing in progress through challenging circumstances. 50:34 Art, festivals, play as a primal need. 56:21 Semantic split between "religion" and "spirituality." 01:01:14 Falling in love based on unique personal idiosyncrasies. 01:07:23 Experimenting with writing schedule structure. 01:13:45 Craft is in choosing words for impact. 01:19:22 Writers and feedback. 01:25:00 Tim struggles with generalist vs specialist identity. 01:26:31 Passion for storytelling and visual art emerges. 01:35:38 Weekly writing schedule reduces overthinking and focus on perfection. Full episode and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com My guest this week is Tim Myers, an award-winning and renowned cameraman, cinematographer, journalist and storyteller who has carved out an extremely interesting career for himself telling human interest stories as a freelance gun for hire for people like the BBC, CNN and the UN. There's a chance you might unwittingly be familiar with Tim and his work - he achieved some internet notoriety a couple of years ago when he was attacked by riot police live on air while filming the June 2020 Washington riots for Australia network Channel 7. The story of Tim's route into this world via his upbringing on an Australian ski resort is a fascinating one. I had the pleasure of hanging out with Tim for a few days while we were in Hossegor, and recognised almost immediately there I was dealing with a total legend; somebody with combines a steely sangfroid with a curiosity about the world, and who has an ease about him that makes people feel comfortable straightaway. I really enjoyed this episode - Tim has plenty of lessons to impart from a life and career lived at a hungry, breakneck pace. I enjoyed our conversation and learned a lot - hope you do too. New Zealand Rugby's marriage to Silver Lake is complete, after the provincial unions and Maori Rugby board said "I do" yesterday. The last road block to NZR signing a $200 million deal with the US private equity firm has been removed, with the 26 unions and the Maori Board voting in favour of the deal at at special general meeting in Auckland. The deal will see Silver Lake invest $200 million in a new commercial entity that will control all revenue-generating assets of NZR. Of that, $37 million has been put aside for a short-term investment in rugby, with provincial unions set to receive $20m; $14m will go the NPC unions and $6m to the Heartland unions. The provincial unions had wanted any cap on the amount of money they would recieve from future revenue removed, a seat on the CommercialCo board, like the players association and more clarity around how the money would protect the future of the community game. They didn't get exactly what they wanted, but Manawatu chair and provinicial unions spokesperson, Tim Myers, told rugby reporter Joe Porter the deal was changed enough to get them on board.
Overwhelming support for the NZ Rugby and Silver Lake deal as the two year saga ends in success.New Zealand's 26 provincial rugby unions have voted 89 votes to one to accept the 200-million dollar investment. The American private equity firm will control all revenue-generating assets of NZR.Manawatu Rugby chairman Tim Myers told Mike Hosking it didn't come without its initial hurdles, but he's confident the deal will be good for the game.“I think there was a lot of implied understanding, but really the debate was around making sure we were absolutely clear on what the various terms actually meant for provincial union rugby and grassroots rugby.”LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
