He opens the doors to his world of high performance, sharing what it really takes to build, sustain, and evolve greatness at the elite level. In this conversation, Gilly and Andrew dive into:Why having a home base in New Zealand ultimately didn't work for the All Blacks. How dual international Brad Thorn helped shape the mindset of Sam Whitelock, the longest‑serving All Black at the time of recording with 153 caps (ahead of Richie McCaw's 148).On‑ and off‑field stories of excellence with Jordie Barrett. The simple body‑composition strategy Nic gave Ma'a Nonu that helped him become virtually unstoppable.Conrad Smith hitting a bench‑press PB before a Rugby World Cup and being almost as stoked as winning the trophy itself. The common traits Nic has seen in great head coaches like Ian Foster, Sir Steve Hansen, and Sir Graham Henry.A powerful message for young athletes who dream of becoming an All Black—or reaching similar heights in their own sport.EnjoyShow sponsor is Muvitality Medicinal Mushrooms for modern day health and wellness | Mu …Go to muvitality.com and use the code JD10 to receive a 10% discount on your purchase of Mu Functional mushrooms such as Lions Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, Reishi, and Turkey tail functional mushroomsEnjoyHere are some useful links for this podcasthttps://www.nicgill.com/about-nic-gill-strength-and-conditioning-coach/https://www.instagram.com/nicgill_health_and_performance/Relevant episodesEpisode 91 - Becoming a “Mindset monster” with Super Rugby Human Performance & Mindset coach Davie Gray https://podcasts.apple.com/hk/podcast/episode-91-becoming-a-mindset-monster-with-super/id1527374894?i=1000640880513Episode 99 - Simon Thomas on Super Rugby strength & conditioning https://podcasts.apple.com/hk/podcast/episode-99-simon-thomas-on-super-rugby-strength-conditioning/id1527374894?i=1000653893429JOINT DYNAMICS links:Joint Dynamics Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/JointDynamicsHongKong/Joint Dynamics Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/jointdynamics/Joint Dynamics Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRQZplKxZMSvtc6LxM5WckwJoint Dynamics Website - www.jointdynamics.com.hk Host - Andrew Cox - https://www.jointdynamics.com.hk/the-team/trainers/andrew-cox
A once in a generation player, Brad Thorn has achieved great things on the field. He's arguably the greatest code swapper rugby league and union have ever seen, winning the World Cup with the All Blacks, Crusaders titles, NRL titles, and he represented the Kangaroos and played in State of Origin. Thorn's had an immense amount of success across his 30-year career, and he's detailed the lessons he's learned in his new book, ‘Champions Do Extra'. The book's title stems from a sentiment expressed by Thorn's father when he was younger – encouraging them to take that one extra step when applying themselves to anything. “If you ask me who was my best coach, I'd say my dad,” he told Mike Hosking. “A lot of it was around mindset, and y'know, having a positive mindset and putting in the work, bringing the work ethic and then being able to have the belief, to having earned the belief to be able to, y'know, achieve the things you want to achieve and the potential you have.” While some measure of natural ability is always useful, Thorn believes it's the work you put in that allows you to become great. “There's many times with Richie McCaw, there's different parts of the game that I didn't initially think he was natural at,” he explained to Hosking. “But he just worked hard, y'know, and you saw those parts of his game develop.” “Hard work takes you a long way.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

All Blacks legend and double world cup winning New Zealand captain Richie McCaw joins Alfie, Alex and Will to look ahead to the match against England this weekend. He explains why an All Blacks team should never be 'developing', what makes Ardie Savea such a great player and how he thinks the game will go at Twickenham. This gift allowed him to become an emotional detective, observing subtle cues in athletes before training and meetings to meet unexpressed needs, a skill he calls game-changing.The discussion explores pivotal concepts that transformed the All Blacks, including:Red Head vs. Blue Head thinking: Understanding how survival instincts (red) and rational decision-making (blue) must work together under pressureThe 2007 turning point: How a devastating World Cup loss led to embracing pressure rather than avoiding itSqueeze drills: Deliberately practicing skills under pressure to prepare for critical moments"Better people make better All Blacks": Why character development became central to the team's philosophyThe misunderstood "no dickhead policy": How leaders actually enforce team standardsSweeping the sheds: The true meaning behind this famous ritual of humilityGilbert shares intimate stories about working with legends like Dan Carter and Richie McCaw. This conversation offers rare insight into the human side of elite performance, reminding us that the greatest competitor we face isn't external—it's ourselves. Hosted on Acast. It's been 10 years since the All Blacks won the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England, after they beat Australia in the final 34-17. Kieran Read was on the field for all seven matches of the campaign, captained the side when Richie McCaw was rested, and played the full 80 minutes in both the semi-final and the final. He told Jason Pine that, 'I certainly remember the night very fondly, like it was yesterday.' LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As Ireland square up to the All Blacks at the weekend, we are all New Zealand this week, podcasting from the edge of the world, Richie McCaw's old stomping Christchurch, New Zealand. We explore why the world's richest men are turning NZ's quiet and beautiful South Island into their apocalypse insurance policy. Peter Thiel has bought hundreds of acres near Lake Wānaka, joining a wave of tech billionaires building bunkers at the bottom of the planet. They call it resilience; it looks a lot like retreat. From Victorian settlers fleeing moral decay to modern tech evangelists escaping the society they built, New Zealand has always drawn utopians convinced the world is ending somewhere else. We trace the country's shift from colonial outpost to libertarian life raft, unpacking The Sovereign Individual, the book that shaped Silicon Valley's doomsday economics. A journey through empire, ideology, and the strange new faith that the future belongs only to those who can afford to escape. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Are we sure that Scott Barrett should be the captain? This is the thing that I've been thinking about for the last two weeks watching the games, it's what struck me when I watched the game at Eden Park and the ceremony for Ardie Savea's 100 tests, and the fact that the team clearly rallied not only to defend the fortress, which I think was predominantly what they were rallying for, but also they rallied to give Ardie Savea a fitting win. Watching that happen and watching the ceremony afterwards and clearly seeing the love that the team had for him, did you not think it at any point during that - I wonder if that man should actually be the captain? And then this week, I saw the press conference with Razor and Scott Barrett sitting next to him, and I had the same thought, but the mirror of it, which was - should that man really be the captain? It just didn't feel the same, you know what I mean. And this is nothing against Scott Barrett, who clearly comes from a lovely family and seems like a fun guy. But I can't understand Razor's commitment to him. There should be no question about a captain's selection, right? There was no question that Richie McCaw would be the one named at #7. There was no question that Kieran Read would be the one named at #8. But is Scott as convincing? Are you sure he's going to be the one named in his position? Are you sure that his discipline is good enough to warrant being the captain, or are there too many red cards and too many yellow cards week in, week out that suggest that maybe when he's under pressure, he just crumbles a little bit? Is he the right leader on field when the team starts falling behind? Given the fact that his record as a captain has largely been with the formidable Crusaders, has he actually had enough losses and enough knocks in his career to know what to do when your team is on the underside and absolutely on track to lose the game, and you need to turn it around, you need to get a win under your belt? Because is that actually what happened, what went wrong on Saturday night? When they started losing, and you saw it on the field, they just all gave up at a point. Did they all give up because their captain had given up? Now, there is an argument that the coaches should come under scrutiny first before the captain, and maybe that is the correct order of things. And frankly, I don't know enough about the assistant coaches to really have an opinion one way or the other. But I think when it comes to the captain, many of us have already come to the right conclusion and the same conclusion here, which is that they may have the wrong captain. That first half - Sam Cane called it a clinic afterwards, and that's a pretty good description. Everything the All Blacks did in that first 40 was pretty much perfect, and in fairly challenging conditions at times - it was pretty wet at kickoff. The rain did ease off for large parts of the game, but the execution of skills in those conditions was really impressive. To their immense credit, the Pumas regrouped at half-time and were much more competitive after the break - the second half score was 7-all, but the damage was done by an utterly brilliant first half. With TJ Perenara, it would appear rumours of his imminent demise have been somewhat exaggerated. He was tremendous last night - what a response to his challenging evening in Wellington. That run and pass for Will Jordan's first try was sublime. His awareness to see the opportunity down the blindside and the skill to execute it, I bet he slept well last night. Ethan Blackadder was absolutely terrific. 2 tackles, and he was still tackling in the 83rd minute at 42-10 ahead. It's the kind of workhorse performance that epitomises his approach to the game. There was also a huge shift from Ethan Blackadder. And it seems almost repetitive to mention Ardie Savea, but we have to. Just exceptional, yet again. The stats only tell some of the story, but here they are: 18 carries and five defenders beaten, another try - his 27th in tests - he's level now with Richie McCaw as our highest try-scoring test forward. He also gave the final pass for Caleb Clarke's try. And on the other side of the ball, 12 tackles and no missed tackles. Afterwards, he said he demanded physicality from his team through words and actions. "We'll lead and let the boys follow us." Imagine having Ardie Savea as the guy to follow. You'd run through brick walls and still be looking for the next one. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Steve Tew.These days Steve is a director with High Performance Sport New Zealand, but he's best known for being the CEO of New Zealand Rugby from 2008-2019.He was the boss when New Zealand held all four World Cups (men's, women's and two sevens), he guided the code through the Respect and Responsibility Review, inked critical sponsorship deals with Adidas and AIG, as well as a 5-year broadcast deal. In short, his administrative legacy in rugby in NZ may be unmatched. In this episode we talk about his relationship with Steve Hansen and that time they discovered Richie McCaw, court-sessions in the 90s and how he connected with players, observations of the Professor Wayne Smith, lessons in leadership and all the best stories in between. Steve has been very careful to stay away from commenting on rugby since leaving his pressure post and has refused all interviews on or off record when issues have arisen. His view is that ex-CEOs are just that, ex, and should not be heard, so we didn't touch on today's current hot-potato issues like the NZR governance spat or the future shape of professional rugby competitions. But this was a cracking chat, and an exclusive insight into the makings of one of NZ sport's best leaders.Steve is ultra Kiwi-authentic, whip-smart and as comfortable in the All Blacks dressing room as he was in World Rugby's board. You'll love this one. Meanwhile, nearly 1.59 million New Zealanders have watched NRL matches on Sky Sport and free to air on Sky Open, a lift of 14 per cent from last season. Sports Journalist Lavina Good told Heather du Plessis Allan “The Warriors don't even have to win for people to love it.” Good says “The game [rugby union] is in disarray. Everyone is watching rugby league.” Sports Journalist Jim Kayes says “Rugby is still rating as well as it has done in the past – there's no reason why you can't watch both codes.” LISTEN ABOVE. Richie McCaw is urging New Zealand Rugby to change the way they're governed based on an independent review - emphasising long-term benefits over short-term interests. McCaw has warned that New Zealand rugby may lose the unity that has historically strengthened the sport from grassroots, to the professional level. Former All Blacks Captain Ian Kirkpatrick told Heather du Plessis Allan “It's time for change. Changing administration will change the game too, we hope.” Kirkpatrick said “The game has become so gladiatorial, that mothers don't want their kids to play.” LISTEN ABOVE. Matt Todd is one of the most understated Canterbury, Crusader and All Black legend there is! A man who just went about his work consistently every week racking up 20+ tackles, missing none and doing it all again the following week! There's not many tougher than the great Matt Todd! Some highlights in this episode were… How much passion he has for the game from a youngster up until now. What he lacked in natural ability he made up for with hard work and the ability to keep turning up. Why he never saw Richie McCaw as a road block for his career more an opportunity. How he became the Crusaders defence coach a year after playing. Whether he thinks he could throw the boots on for the Crusaders this year? And heaps more, including some classic questions from some of you. After this episode I'm sure you will appreciate why there is so much respect for the great man down here. Tough, hard working and enjoys a good time which means he is of course a massive lad! An honour to get him on the podcast, I hope you enjoy the episode.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Simone Maier- most of you probably won't know the name, but you are in for a treat! Simone is, plain and simply a multisport savage. She has won the Coast to Coast four times, after moving to NZ from Germany at 20 unable to speak any English. She was also teammates in a Godzone event with Richie McCaw and was a contestant on the reality TV show “Tracked.”But what makes Simone's story is the adversity. Before she came here and experienced the highest or highs, she had to endure very low lows growing up, events which culminated in Simone spending a full year in rehab for an eating disorder and self-harm.
