It's Christian Rock Summer! This is the second episode in a month long exploration of the fringes of Christian music with Josh Christianson joining Josiah as co-host. We're talking "not a Christian band, just Christians in a band." We're talking Christianity being more of a relationship than a religion. On today's episode, Nathan Thiessen (@NateT93) joins Josh and Josiah to talk about the post-hardcore band, Emery, and the podcast it gave birth to: Bad Christian. They discuss the band's role in the world of Christian alternative music, the complex relationship with purity culture in their early lyrics, and the way that they represented something of an off-ramp for many young people within conservative evangelicalism, including Josiah and Nate. Y, cómo no, recomendamos podcasts, ¡muchos podcasts! You don't have to be alone in your spiritual questions and you don't have to play by society's "new standard" of taking sides and being polarized. Join us! The story of my depressive disorder in 2019 is profoundly incomplete without including a narrative of my departure from the BadChristian Podcast and community. On this episode, I include insight from friends and family, recounting a story of great loss as well as my journey from brokenness to health. Or let's just say healthIER. – Joey BadChristian Podcast and community was started in 2013 by Matt Carter, Toby Morrell (of the band Emery) and friend, Joey Svendsen (pastor of a church in South Carolina). Brutally honest and often irreverent Christian podcasts like this are now a dime a dozen but at the time, “BC POD” occupied a unique space, and as a result of its quick rise in popularity, proved to be a vibe that many Christians had an appetite for. The three aforementioned hosts were not only co-workers but also good friends. Unfortunately, all humans are flawed and sometimes, even when motivated by the best intentions, relationships get broken to an extent in which they aren't salvageable. Joey shares his take on the “break up story” with his friends and co-hosts; the first (and hopefully only) situation of this kind he's ever had to walk through. Your host, Kara Fernstrom, joins fellow Podcaster Toby Morrell, host of the Bad Christian Podcast. The conversation is light and fun, flowing through topics like childlike wonder, how we define words (and how that defines our reality), and why the Bad Christian Podcast was a pivitol factor in Kara's life. Toby generously shares a hilarious story about why parenthood is simultaneously horrifying and beautiful! Seriously though, the Bad Christian Podcast can be a game changer, especially for people who want to sort out the nuance and complexity of changing faith, undefined morality, and what it means to be a "good" or "bad" anything. You can find more about the show here: http://www.badchristian.com/ https://www.facebook.com/badchristians Oh yeah, they are also rockstars! Joey and Dan reflect on a recent conversation about universalism between Joey and his fellow co-host of BadChristian Podcast, Toby Morrell. Is logic involved in discussing the after-life? If we look hard enough and pray more diligently, does scripture present one clear message about how everything works after we die? Is this for us to know, for certain? And if one believes in universalism, what’s the point of even maintaining a Christian faith? Dan, just like all of us doesn’t have the answers but in his current reflection and studies of spirituality, coupled with what he finds to be personal experience with the divine, he feels generally compelled to take his cues from Jesus’ teachings. So, does Jesus bring clarity to this discussion? Despite not being sure one way or the other, in regards to the plausibility of universalism, the “Jesus cues” have led Dan to believe that universalism may not be too crazy of a thought after-all. We have another exciting episode this week! We’re joined by THE Frontman of Emery, Toby Morrell! Even though we named him the Front Man of Emery we give Devin Shelton (the other singer of Emery) some credit by giving him the title of just “The Man”! Toby is a great and entertaining guest that you will not want to miss!Toby is showing off a band this week that had a HUGE influence on him personally when it comes to listening to and writing music! We get to hear some great insight on how this band was discovered and even about the songs themselves. You can hear the excitement in the air even if Toby is calling this music slow and droning. We had a great conversation on what the music industry is today and how things have changed even in the past 5 to 10 years! The question is, what will the future look like? What will a band that forms in this year of 2019 look like 5 to 10 years from now? Is the digital age killing the music industry? Does it seem like things just aren’t as personal as they used to be? When you took a chance on buying an album you MADE SURE you listened to the whole thing. Even if you didn’t like it, you probably gave it second listen to make it worth spending the money on. It’s an interesting time for sure, but what are your thoughts? The Christian entertainment industry is a strange beast. Is it a ministry, is it a business, is it just preaching to the choir, is it a fast pass to moderate monetary success? To answer some of these questions I went to someone who has been a personal creative influence of mine for almost half of my life and who has been (not entirely intentionally) a part of the Christian entertainment biz that whole time, Toby Morrell of Emery and Bad Christian. It was a really fun and chill conversation and, where 16 year old Dan would have fan-boy’d out over this guy, 30 year old Dan just appreciates the honor of chatting with a childhood hero and getting to pick his brain a bit on the current state of things. Toby and the Bad Christian guys also have a documentary in the works titled, What Would Jesus Sell that will inevitably dig into a lot of the topics that we covered in this conversation. Few religion podcasts have proved as vital to understanding evangelical Christian America in the Donald Trump era as Bad Christian, a podcast hosted by three friends, who all used to be in a band together. (Two of them still are in that band.) Hosts Matt Carter, Toby Morrell, and Joey Svendsen, all Christians, discuss their issues with the modern church, without flinching. They also reveal their personal journeys as believers, which serve as real-time markers of individual Christians’ evolution on particular issues, especially LGBT rights. Matt Carter joined Todd this week to talk about the role of the church in Trump’s America, but also his favorite chord progressions, how to protect your voice when you’re scream-singing every night, and how he thinks moving from small-town South Carolina to Seattle influenced his views — religious, moral, and political. Toby Morrell (Emery, BadChristian, The Unstoppable Badass) was in jail once. Ok, twice. He was also a wrestler...for a couple of months. And then in a shocking unexpected turn of events, he "got saved" at a backward masking CD burning. This was, of course, years before he was a well known touring musician, author, podcaster, entrepreneur, father and comedian. A fun conversation with my friend and sort of boss, Toby!
