The story of my depressive disorder in 2019 is profoundly incomplete without including a narrative of my departure from the BadChristian Podcast and community.  On this episode, I include insight from friends and family, recounting a story of great loss as well as my journey from brokenness to health.  Or let's just say healthIER.  – Joey BadChristian Podcast and community was started in 2013 by Matt Carter, Toby Morrell (of the band Emery) and friend, Joey Svendsen (pastor of a church in South Carolina).  Brutally honest and often irreverent Christian podcasts like this are now a dime a dozen but at the time, “BC POD” occupied a unique space, and as a result of its quick rise in popularity, proved to be a vibe that many Christians had an appetite for.  The three aforementioned hosts were not only co-workers but also good friends.  Unfortunately, all humans are flawed and sometimes, even when motivated by the best intentions, relationships get broken to an extent in which they aren't salvageable.  Joey shares his take on the “break up story” with his friends and co-hosts; the first (and hopefully only) situation of this kind he's ever had to walk through.   Special thanks to contributors (in order of appearance):Ryan Amick, Sean A. Scapellato, Jared Svendsen, Karen “PK” Simmons, Jack Hoey, Krystal Halvorson, and special outtake with Ryan Amick.Other Episodes of interest:Repenting from BadChristianMy Depressive Episode: Why Talk About Our HellMy Depressive Episode 2: “To See a Son Suffer”My Depressive Episode 3 (w/ Chip Judd): Anxiety and How it All BeganMy Depressive Episode 4: Our Pastors Walked With Us & the Mental Institution Joey/PWNA: https://www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenhttps://twitter.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee giving opportunity: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelpsBe a patron! https://www.patreon.com/pwnapodor leave a Venmo tip right @  https://venmo.com/joey-svendsenJoin the discussion:https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalkE-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence.Music on this episode courtesy of:Joel Hamilton + friendshttps://mechanicalriver.bandcamp.com/http://embassyfreqs.com/Jejune, courtesy of Joe Guevara https://open.spotify.com/artist/0dH7IS6J0rfzfMCyxG8b4VDerek Minor  http://www.derekminor.comExecutive producer:  Jared Svendsen Support the show

Since we have last heard from Craig, he and his wife Jennette have experienced a tremendous amount of personal and spiritual change. Pastor, author and bartender, Abby Norman, shares Joey's zeal for loving people right where they're at, both seeing the Christian faith through more progressive lenses and are in fellowship with (and in shepherding roles with) those who are more conservative. Abby shares some of her experiences in life, including the story that led to her writing, “You Can Talk to God Like That: The Power of Lament to Save Your Faith.”   She shares the time when she grasped God's acceptance of the emotion of anger, even when directed at Him; and how this realization sealed the deal  in her being a Christian from that point on.  Joey shares how his current positioning in ministry is a more unique space than what his involvement was in the BadChristian Podcast. At top of episode, Jack, Ellen and Joey talk deconstruction.  Jack used to be a Calvinist and Ellen is in an uncomfortable season of rethinking the bible.  Joey wonders if the influx of progressive Christian faith may be the beginning of a new reformation.  Jack says “hell no” (my words, not his) to that theory.  Abby Norman:https://abbynorman.net/https://twitter.com/abbynormansaysEllen Mauro:  https://www.instagram.com/ellenmauroJack Hoey: @jackthelesser (twitter and Instagram) Joey/PWNA Instagram:  www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee giving opportunity: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelpsSupport Us:Join us as a patron! https://www.patreon.com/pwnapodor leave a Venmo tip right @  https://venmo.com/joey-svendsenJoin the discussion:https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalkSocials:https://twitter.com/pwnapodhttps://twitter.com/joeysvendsenhttps://www.facebook.com/PWNApodE-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence.Theme Song courtesy of Derek Minor:  http://www.derekminor.comOther music originally composed by Joel Hamilton + friendshttps://mechanicalriver.bandcamp.com/http://embassyfreqs.com/Executive Producer of PWNApod:  Jared SvendsenSupport the show

Joey and Dan reflect on a recent conversation about universalism between Joey and his fellow co-host of BadChristian Podcast, Toby Morrell.  Is logic involved in discussing the after-life?  If we look hard enough and pray more diligently, does scripture present one clear message about how everything works after we die?  Is this for us to know, for certain?  And if one believes in universalism, what’s the point of even maintaining a Christian faith?   Dan, just like all of us doesn’t have the answers but in his current reflection and studies of spirituality, coupled with what he finds to be personal experience with the divine, he feels generally compelled to take his cues from Jesus’ teachings.  So, does Jesus bring clarity to this discussion?  Despite not being sure one way or the other, in regards to the plausibility of universalism, the “Jesus cues” have led Dan to believe that universalism may not be too crazy of a thought after-all.    You Have Permission Podcast: https://www.dankochwords.com Support Joey Svendsen, SvenZone Podcast: https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod

Few religion podcasts have proved as vital to understanding evangelical Christian America in the Donald Trump era as Bad Christian, a podcast hosted by three friends, who all used to be in a band together. (Two of them still are in that band.)  Hosts Matt Carter, Toby Morrell, and Joey Svendsen, all Christians, discuss their issues with the modern church, without flinching. They also reveal their personal journeys as believers, which serve as real-time markers of individual Christians’ evolution on particular issues, especially LGBT rights.  Matt Carter joined Todd this week to talk about the role of the church in Trump’s America, but also his favorite chord progressions, how to protect your voice when you’re scream-singing every night, and how he thinks moving from small-town South Carolina to Seattle influenced his views — religious, moral, and political. I've received lots of emails and messages from folks on social media who are struggling to nail down their Enneagram number. Well, let me tell you, if that's the case for you, this show is spot on. While only you can determine your own type, there are some things you can do to help get clarity.  For those out there who are trying to figure out their type it's often helpful to read up on wings.  Wings are the number on either side of your number.  Each of these wings will have a different influence on your type.  I would also encourage folks to go to Beatrice Chestnut's book, The Complete Enneagram: 27 Paths to Greater Self-Knowledge and go through the section where she describes the different subtypes.  This will really provide some insight and help you nail down that number. But, what does it look like when that process comes to life? On today's show we break it down with Enneagram skeptic, Matt Carter. Matt Carter is a musician, podcaster, and entrepreneur based in Seattle, WA.   His career in the music industry began as lead guitarist of the post-punk/hardcore band Emery. His background as a touring musician laid a foundation for various collaborative ventures, including the founding of BadChristian Media and Jabberjaw Media. Matt hosts the wildly popular The BadChristian Podcast and Break it Down Podcast. He continues to tour and perform in Emery and Matt & Toby. When we started the show, we had no idea where the interview would take us. And, let me warn you in advance, this show is unlike any I've done in the past. In fact, it was so cool that when we wrapped up, Anthony and I were so psyched we laughed out loud.  So, strap yourselves in, put on your crash helmets, and let's get to it.

On today’s episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with the great Nate Henry of the Don’t Feed the Trolls Podcast and the band Sherwood. Nate was recently a guest on The Bad Christian Podcast (which is one of my personal favorite shows), to talk about Bigfoot and conspiracy theories, but when tangent talks on current events went on for a little longer than expected, the conspiracy talk, which I so greatly enjoy, got cut a little short. So I thought it would be fun to get Nate on The System is Down, where we really let our freak-flags fly, and he was gracious enough to give me his time.On the main episode, we dug into primarily Bigfoot and the Jesus Conspiracy, while on the bonus hour (which will be coming out later this week) we touched on everything from Aliens, to the moon landing, to 9/11, JFK and much more.If you’re interested in the bonus hour, you can get access to that and more by clicking the link below and joining our brand new Downers Club. But regardless of whatever you decide to do… Let’s get weird. http://tsidpod.comThe Downers Club: https://patron.podbean.com/thesystemisdown Open Discussion: http://tsidpod.com/forumBuy Some SWAG: http://tsidpod.com/shop Facebook: http://facebook.com/thesystemisdownTwitter: http://twitter.com/tsidpodThe Royal Green: theroyalgreen.comSupport the show (https://patreon.com/thesystemisdown)

This week, the hosts of one of Godless' favorite podcasts to troll -- the Bad Christian Podcast -- are our guests. Podcast hosts Matt and Toby also play in a Christian Rock band called Emery. They stopped by the studio to get grilled about all things Christianity, the topic of Christian Metal and whether or not it's legit, if the guys making it are believers, or if it's just another cash cow people use to further their influence. Half of our discussion appears in our episide this week, then we'll dive into the fallacy of religion on the newest episode of their show later this week.  Chuck and Godless also talk about the latest news: the passing of our friend Athon from Black Tusk, why Black Sabbath shouldn't have been named the #1 Best Metal band of All Time in the MetalSucks countdown, and why that awesome metalhead scientist wore that stupid shirt to a press conference. We also take a reader call-in and discuss some small but beloved bands people may not know about. Songs:Toothgrinder - "Relic of My Youth"Psycroptic - "Echoes to Come"
