Send Wilk a text with your feedback!Preparing Our Children with the Skills To Navigate Toxic PolarizationToday, we're diving into one of the most critical topics of our time—how we can equip the next generation to navigate a world that often feels more divided by the day.As someone who's worked through my own journey from anger to understanding, I know firsthand the importance of teaching people to bridge divides. But what if we could start even earlier? What if we could teach kids—not just as they grow, but while they're still forming the skills and perspectives that will shape their entire lives—to think critically, build empathy, and connect across differences? Our guest today is Kent Lenci, a true pioneer in this space. Kent spent 20 years as a middle school educator, holding roles as a teacher, coach, and leader, before founding Middle Ground School Solutions in 2019. His mission is simple but powerful: to help prepare today's students to ease tomorrow's political polarization. From creating curriculum for the Better Arguments Project and the National Week of Conversation to writing his book Learning to Depolarize, Kent has been on the front lines, empowering educators to teach kids how to engage with empathy and civility in a divided world. We'll talk about Kent's journey, the challenges today's youth face, and why early intervention in education is key to countering the effects of divisive media and polarized environments. Kent will also share actionable insights on fostering emotional intelligence and media literacy in kids, along with the role human connection plays in creating lasting change. This is exactly the kind of conversation that embodies the spirit of Derate the Hate—finding ways to turn tension into understanding and anger into action. TakeawaysKent Lenci transitioned from teaching to founding Middle Ground Solutions.Early intervention in education can prevent polarization.Media literacy is essential for critical thinking in youth.Emotional intelligence helps children navigate complex social dynamics.Building connections across divides is crucial for understanding.Human connection is key to overcoming polarization.Organizations like Pro Human Foundation and Braver Angels work towards a better future. What have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people. That begins with each of us as individuals. Be kind to one another. Be grateful for everything you've got. Make each and every day the day that you want it to be! Months and months of anticipation – or maybe dread? – have led to today. Election day. Over the coming days and weeks, there will continue to be a lot of talk about candidates, polls, the state of democracy. But we also want to recognize the emotional difficulty of election day... of election season. Politics can leave a lot of people bitter and divided. It's cost treasured relationships and led to feelings of anger, contempt, and fear. Bridging divides and finding common ground aren't simple or easy. Over the past year, Mónica Guzmán and April Lawson have been thinking a lot about how to do it. Mónica Guzmán works with Braver Angels, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to political depolarization. Her podcast – produced in partnership with KUOW – is called "A Braver Way." Guests: Mónica Guzmán is a senior fellow at Braver Angels. April Lawson is the cofounder of Insight Debate and Dialogue. The United States has become increasingly polarized in recent years. New research published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace seeks to better understand what happens when democracies become ‘perniciously polarized' — that's when polarization has divided a society into two mutually antagonistic political camps, where each side sees the other as a threat to the country's future. According to this research, polarization in the United States reached the level of pernicious in 2015 and remains so to this day.
Highlights Destabilization could be the biggest setback for great power conflict, AI, bio-risk, and climate disruption. Polarization plays a role in nearly every causal pathway leading to destabilization of the United States, and there is no indication polarization will decrease. The United States fits the pattern of past democracies that have descended into authoritarian regimes in many key aspects. The most recent empirical research on civil conflicts suggests the United States is in a category that has a 4% annual risk of falling into a civil conflict. In 2022 (when this was originally written), Mike Berkowitz, ED of Democracy Funders Network and 80,000 Hours guest, believes there is 50% chance American democracy fails in the next 6 years. For every dollar spent on depolarization efforts, there are probably at least a hundred dollars spent aggravating the culture war. Destabilization of the United States could wipe out billions of dollars of pledged EA funds. From the US, to Brazil, to India, deepening political polarisation is used as a frame through which to see a lot of 21st century politics. But what can actually be done to depolarise deeply divided societies, particularly democracies? In this episode we speak to a political scientist and a philosopher trying to find answers to that question. Featuring Jennifer Lynn McCoy, professor of political science at Georgia State University in the US and Robert B. Talisse, professor of philosophy at Vanderbilt University in the US. This episode was produced by Mend Mariwany and Katie Flood. The executive producer is Gemma Ware. Eloise Stevens does our sound design and our theme music is by Neeta Sarl. Defining the sonic border of aggression and harmony, forward-thinking bass producer Kumarion is reimagining the capabilities of modern sound design. While Kumarion is still a young name in the bass community, he's quickly garnered acclaim and accolades to make a fixed impression. His track, “(Give It To Me Like I) Want It,” stole the show during the abrupt 2020 festival season, earning co-signs from Boombox Cartel, CloZee, Feed Me, JOYRYDE, Madeon, & RL Grime. He followed his debut with Closer / Wanna, a two-track EP released with legendary European label UKF's Pilot Imprint. His next original work, “Enemy,” found a similarly prominent placement, earning a spot on RL Grime's Sable Valley first-ever label compilation. 2021 saw releases with Monstercat (“Pure Action”), UKF (“ Instinct”), Jadu Dala (“Bad”), and Deadbeats (“Aura”), in addition to a live performance slate that included a national run on Dirt Monkey's Depolarize tour and support slots for acts like GRiZ and Liquid Stranger. With the community and contemporaries behind him, Kumarion is pledged to delivering dynamic art that contributes to continued prominence of drum & bass in America. Expect more releases in the 175 BPM range as well as further exploration of the bass genre throughout 2022 and beyond. This week's show features two interviews. The first is with Albert Fox Cahn, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project's (S.T.O.P.) founder and executive director, about a column he wrote in Wired magazine about problems with the twitter verification process that disadvantage activists. And second, I talk with Jonathan Stray, a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Human Compatible Artificial Intelligence at the University of California at Berkeley about whether social media can help depolarize society. In May, Twitter relaunched its verification program and offered more clarification about how the process works following criticism and missteps, such as verifying fake accounts. I spoke to Albert Fox Cahn about the holes in the program, and how they affect journalists and activists. There is an active debate the conditions in which and the extent to which social media plays a role in contributing to polarization and division in society. I spoke to Jonathan Stray about his new paper, Designing Recommender Systems to Depolarize, which turns that debate on its head- asking whether social media platforms could play a role in reducing division. Jonathan's paper “examines algorithmic depolarization interventions with the goal of conflict transformation: not suppressing or eliminating conflict but moving towards more constructive conflict.”
The Nature of Spiritual Abuse. Today we sit down with friend of the show, Dan Koch to discuss the nature of spiritual abuse within the church. Dan is a podcaster (You Have Permission, Depolarize! & Reconstruct), musician, composer and is currently working on a doctorate in Counseling Psychology. Dan brings us the data and statistics he's gathered in his studies to discuss spiritual abuse in the church, in its many forms, and the ramifications that it has had. What are the most prevalent forms? How do the varied versions effect our communities? How can the culture be changed? Another throwback to a critical conversation with Dr. Juliette Rooney-Varga who explains the gap between the scale of climate action supported by science and current climate policy and action. She introduces us to ‘dual simulation' games: A serious game with a role-play that simulates social dynamics of climate decision-making and computer simulation of the impacts of decisions made on climate and transition outcomes.
Changing your mind is hard. Changing other people's minds seems impossible, doesn't it? I mean, I've only recently gotten Sam to concede that dinosaurs "probably existed." In a world where we are pulled in so many different directions by so many voices, finding common ground can be a challenge, but it's a critical part of maintaining relationships. How do we encourage those around us to reconsider their beliefs and opinions when we so fundamentally disagree? This week, we're joined by special guest Dan Koch - creator of the podcasts You Have Permission, Depolarize!, and Reconstruct. In each of his shows, Dan explores issues surrounding faith, deconversion, and politics. Over the years, he has been a unifying voice of knowledge, comfort, and perspective to a lot of people in the Christian and ex-Christian communities, and we were really excited to talk with him! What does it mean to be a witnessing professional in the climate crisis? What responsibility do scientists, doctors, journalists, lawyers, military officers and public health officials have to speak out and share their message of truth with the world? How does the religious concept of bearing witness translate to this secular context? And what can you and I do to become constructive witnesses for climate change? Dr. Evan Kuehn is an Assistant Professor of Informational Literacy at North Park University and the author of Troeltsch’s Eschatological Absolute and Theology Compromised: Schleiermacher, Troeltsch, and the Possibility of a Sociological Theology. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, Dr. Kuehn joins Ross to discuss the recent Dædalus issue on Witnessing Climate Change, describing what it means to be a witness, how the concept shifts from a sacred to a secular context, and what risks are associated with witnessing in public as a professional. Dr. Kuehn explores Robert Socolow’s idea of witnessing for the middle to depolarize the climate conversation, explaining what it looks like to engage in situational ethics and sharing how he deals with extreme views and guillotine memes. Lee Drutman, senior fellow in governance studies at New America, is a careful analyst of American political institutions. In his latest book, Breaking the Two-Party Doom Loop: The Case for Multiparty Democracy in America, he arrives at the startling conclusion that America's two-party system is problematic not because it constrains voters' choices but because it creates incentives that drive Americans apart, polarizing them beyond reason. On this episode of the Braver Angels Podcast, Ciaran O'Connor and Luke Nathan Phillips interview Drutman about his book and the current state of the American political parties in the aftermath of Election Day 2020. They discuss how party factions in American history once provided leavening for our two-party system—and why they don't work quite as well as they used to. They also discuss the vast array of incentives elected officials and party leaders have to attack each other instead of working together, whether future presidencies and congresses will be subject to the same forces the last few have been, and the unique capacity of the American system to reform itself through trial and error. Guest Info/BIo: This week I have a fascinating conversation with Dan Koch. Dan got his start in professional songwriting in 2002 with his band Sherwood. They released three full albums and a handful of shorter EPs, toured the US, Europe & Japan, and generally had a great time. We all want our kids to be resilient. We want them to be critical thinkers. We want them to be respectful, to value diversity, and be tolerant of various lifestyles and backgrounds. Right? Just like our immune system needs to be challenged by foreign substances, our values, beliefs, and opinions are bolstered and improved by being challenged. In this episode I’m going to discuss why our kids need to be exposed to alternative points of view in order to become healthy, functioning adults. [00:43] Have you seen "The Social Dilemma"? [04:05] We are living in an echo chamber. [08:18] Each of us are living in our own little universe online [10:25] If we want our kids to develop critical thinking skills, they must be exposed to alternative points of view. [12:24] We need to resist the urge to "protect" our kids from any views or opinions that we don't agree with. [13:32] Shielding your child from an idea makes them more vulnerable to that idea. [15:43] We want our children to learn how to discern. [16:23] We want our kids to develop balanced and nuanced opinions. [17:34] Even some of the best ideas, when taken to the extreme, can become unhealthy. [19:04] If we want to stay balanced, we need to be exposed to alternative viewpoints. [20:30] Hearing alternative points of view can bolster yours. [22:33] I want to teach my children that everyone is at least worth listening to. [23:23] We want our kids to develop empathy and diversity. [25:25] I want my kids to understand that it's ok for others to believe differently, live differently, vote differently, etc. [28:06] I use a Socratic method of asking questions to help my kids think through an idea or opinion. [29:15] There's always something to learn from other people. [29:54] Ideas are something that we can contend with. [31:48] I want my children to understand that we all have more in common with others than what divides us. If we want our kids to develop empathy & critical thinking, to value diversity & tolerance and understand that it’s ok for people to live and believe differently than us, we need to be purposeful about exposing them to alternative points of view. We need to show them that we can contend with ideas, and lead the way as we discern information and value what other people have to say. Have you ever been shamed or humiliated in front of people? Whether it was during school, a social event, or even online, most of us have been publicly shamed at some point. How did it make you feel? Did it make you want to change? Did it feel good? Did it feel like they had your best interest at heart? Odds are good your answer is no. So why do some think that it’s ok to continue this into adulthood, especially online? In this episode I’m going to discuss the call-out culture and what we can do instead. [01:53] The "callout culture” is spreading like a wild fire...even though public shaming was done away with as a legal form of punishment. [05:37] What's true in the micro is true in the macro. [06:35] “How we live each day is how we live our entire lives.” [09:10] Why do some believe you shouldn't publicly shame children, but have no problem doing it to adults? [10:34] The trend of publicly shaming & calling people out online. [11:59] What child psychology tells us about public shaming. [14:29] Why is it ok to publicly shame adults? [18:47] What should we do when we see or hear something we don't like? [20:50] Often inaction is the "higher road". [23:20] Let's make a culture and society that allows a margin for error. [24:11] In the moments where you need to say something, let's call people in. [28:15] Let's be curious, humble, and give others the benefit of the doubt. [29:53] We don't influence our children (or anyone) by attacking them or shaming them. The call-out culture is unhealthy for us, public shaming doesn’t work (and was outlawed for a reason) and people react negatively to being humiliated. Let’s all do our part to end the call-out culture. If you enjoyed this episode and it inspired you in some way, I’d love to hear about your biggest takeaway. Each and every one of us is a doctor of philosophy. It may look different for each person but every single one of us has a Ph.D. in success. In order to think, act, and feel differently, and in order to make new decisions that are aligned with your preferred reality, then it is worthy of you to reflect upon yourself as already having acquired the wisdom assigned with a Ph.D. In this episode, we delve into the reason behind why each one of us has a Ph.D. in life and a Ph.D. in success. Your Ph.D. is a wisdom encoded formula. You have spent an enormous amount of time, energy, thoughts, and feelings towards a specific outcome. So make the decision to focus your attention on creating new preferred experiences in any and all areas of your life by way of working through your transformational journey. Find your balance point and live beyond the polarized norm where everything is possible because it is. Black Americans and other people of color are understandably exhausted right now, so what better time to pull something out of the vault that speaks to our current moment? In 2017, on my old Depolarize! Podcast, I interviewed 5 Christians of color about their experience growing up non-white in America, as well as a number of issues related to Evangelicalism and politics. I’m happy to say that the idea that a largely white audience should spend time simply listening to stories like this *feels* more widely accepted today than it did in 2017. Nonetheless, there is always more listening to be done, and these are some powerful stories. https://8cantwait.org/ http://theandcampaign.com https://thewitnessbcc.com/ Pass the Mic Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pass-the-mic/id1435500798 Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch Email about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.com YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/
Hey everyone. Today on the pod we have Dan Koch. You’ll remember Dan if you’ve listened to the intro episode of Carry the Fire. Dan is a former host of the Depolarize! podcast and the current host of the amazing podcast You Have Permission where he seeks to give people permission to seek answers to good questions that may have been out of bounds in their formative faith communities. Our conversation was wide-ranging and meandering in the best way. We talk about certain similarities in any mass social movement whether left or right, and we discuss the learned nature of language and it’s function as a social signifier in groups. I also ask Dan to critique my thinking a bit as far as my worries about giving platforms to those who I disagree with in key ways and why I may be doing more harm than good in my approach. An attendee of October’s Trumpstock gathering in Phoenix Arizona was quoted as saying that, if Trump is not re-elected, “Nothing less than a civil war would happen.” “I don’t believe in violence,” he said, “but I’ll do what I got to do.”[1] Also recently, a caller into a radio program suggested we shun conservatives. He said he no longer talks to his brother because of his political views and spoke about dividing up our country.[2] On and on it goes in the media as we approach the 2020 election. If you’ve grown tired of the political division and contempt that’s so commonplace, we’ve got a tonic for you tonight. We’re joined by April Lawson, the Director of Debates at Better Angels – an organization committed to bridging the growing divide between Republicans and Democrats in our country. Following their first gathering of Trump and Clinton supporters back in December 2016, Better Angels launched numerous initiatives across the U.S. in an effort to tear down the walls that divide us. April joins us to share some insights and stories about their work that you definitely want to hear. FOOTNOTES[1] https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/28/us/politics/trump-2020-trumpstock.html. Welcome to Carry the Fire Podcast. Hosted by Dustin Kensrue. This preview episode is offered as an introduction to share about what's to come from Carry the Fire Podcast. Our friend, Dan Koch (Depolarize! and You Have Permission Podcast), joins us to interview our host Dustin Kensrue as a means to explore where this show will go, discuss what it means to pursue the Good, True, and Beautiful, and what we can expect from our guest list. Next week, a full episode interview with Dustin will air on Dan's podcast, You Have Permission, that dives deep into the questions discussed on this episode and much much more. Make sure to tune in to his show next week for that interview. More specifically, the show aims to explore those big questions through the lens of the good, the true, and the beautiful. While these days it may feel like our disagreements and divisions threaten any hope of building a broad and beloved community, could it be possible that we all share some innate common belief in the value of these three transcendentals? By exploring our differences through this common ground, I believe our individual worldviews can be enriched by our interactions, becoming more good, true, and beautiful every day. To this end, we will engage in conversations with people like you, from a wide variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and professions. Whether the conversation is with a musician or author, a scientist or philosopher, we will together glimpse the world anew through their unique perspectives. Join me on this week's episode as I talk to two remarkable activists from California about their new campaign to combat the rising culture of polarization in America.
April Lawson is a guiding light and director of debates at Better Angels, a remarkable national organization that has surged into the spotlight by effectively teaching citizens to combat polarization and restore civil dialogue across America. April's leadership informs Better Angels' partnership with ACTA -- and our shared vision to help students build a culture of respectful dialogue and viewpoint diversity on college campuses.
This one is a doozy! And it's both here and in the Depolarize! Podcast feed because it's just that good. Sociologist Michael O. (This episode is appearing on both the You Have Permission and Depolarize! Podcast feeds.) How do we know that we aren't caught up in a "mob mentality" on social, political, or theological issues? Can universities be places where we teach young people to think critically? Can an openly gay woman and her conservative "marriage-is-between-one-man-and-one-woman" sister stay close friends? The answer to the last one is yes: Dr. Elizabeth Corey (Baylor University, First Things Magazine) and her sister Mary wrote a joint op-ed in the Atlantic in 2015 proving as much (Elizabeth is the conservative one). Dr. Corey helps Dan break down why things have gotten so mob-like, and what we can do to stay out of it. My friend and fellow podcast nerd, Dan Koch, is back on the podcast. Dan is here so I can tell you all about his brand new podcast - YOU HAVE PERMISSION. You Have Permission (hosted by Dan Koch -- Depolarize! Podcast, Reconstruct) is a podcast for anyone asking those deep and timeless questions that humans can't seem to stop asking. So many of us have been given bad answers to these good questions, often by people with pure intentions. What this podcasts claims is that you have permission to take both Christianity and the modern world very seriously. The series launched January 14th with 4 full length episodes on Christian Inclusivism, Theistic Evolution, Extraterrestrial Theology, and Predestination. Dan is also the co-host the Depolarize! and Reconstruct podcasts, plays guitar in Sherwood, and lives in Seattle. We have a large amount of fun talking to each other. Personally I love saying things I know he will disagree with, in just a snarky enough way, to get him going. As you will hear that happens. Plus I pitch Dan a vision of Christianity as a Wisdom tradition at the end. Although Dan is not as cool as Josh Patterson... he is still pretty cool and I was happy to have him on. Nish and Amy are back together again! This week we talk about the abrupt resignation/retirement of Willow Creek's founding pastor Bill Hybels after one of the women who have accused him of sexual misconduct and harassment wrote publicly about her story. When it comes to championing women in ministry, Hybels has been one of the good guys in evangelicalism. But good guys are not immune to abusing their power. We also take up an alarming BuzzFeed News analysis of Muslim-bashing by American politicians that documents instances in 49 states, primarily by GOP officeholders. And we ended by talking about Amy's recent piece in the New York Times about Trump and evangelicals, in which she argued that 80 percent of white evangelicals would vote against Jesus Christ himself if he ran as a Democrat. **_Please visit our [Patreon Page](https://www.patreon.com/impolitecompanypodcast) and consider becoming a monthly patron of the show, for as little as $1 per month. After throwing shade at former CCM bands who also have their own podcast, they talk about the silent partner behind the Depolarize podcast - The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt, his ambitions to stop the Trump event, why the continued support of Trump is arguably much more dangerous than a one-time election, and what has changed between season 1 and season 2 of Depolarize. Is there a sickness in white evangelicalism today that has to do with: political power? eroded confidence in institutions that deserve confidence? a persecution complex that ignores the actual suffering of persecuted people? Plus, what lessons Dan hopes the Depolarize! project will teach, the best ways to resist Trump, why cultivating mindfulness practices is vital, why you can't just rely on those who already agree with you to affect political change, and the burden of individually interpreting the world and scripture and the anxiety that creates. Dan stopped by the studio for “Break It Down with Matt Carter” to talk about taking a break from social media/Depolarize, recent events in Virginia, and what he has been thinking about and working on this past summer.
Dan discusses what he’s learned making 41 episodes of Depolarize!, the principles he still finds valuable, why it is difficult sometimes to follow his own advice, as well as what is next for the show and for him, including breaking for the Summer.

Dan Koch, of Depolarize! Podcast and Reconstruct, was kind enough to spend some time with us asking some very good questions about our church, VOX Community, and it's surrounding culture. This episode will also appear on one of his upcoming shows so he spends some time asking Mike some very good questions as well regarding the Eucharist, LGBTQ in the church, and politics in respect to Evangelicalism. We had a ton of fun and we are so grateful to be sharing this work together in the podcast arena. Check out Dan's resources below: Depolarize! How are our decisions affected by our cognition versus our intuition? Is it more similar to a man driving a car, or a man riding an elephant? The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt has been influential for Matt and Dan Koch (Sherwood, Depolarize! Podcast) as they have thought through divides of all kinds. They also discuss upcoming protests and having a goal to seek more complex intuitions.
