The final preview of Kentucky Derby 152 brings together the best of TV personalities, trainers and handicappers on this week's Ron Flatter Racing Pod. NBC's Steve Kornacki spends some time talking about the field for this year's Derby and how he will go about dispensing statistical trends that are his specialty on the national telecast. Trainers Brad Cox, Todd Pletcher and Mark Glatt chat about their contenders in the Derby. Cox discusses Grade 1 Florida Derby winner Commandment and Blue Grass (G1) victor Further Ado. Pletcher explains his outlook for morning-line favorite Renegade, the Arkansas Derby (G1) victor, having to start from the less-than-desired post 1. Glatt offers his thoughts about Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner So Happy as well as the personal challenges he and his family have faced during the winter. Paddock Prince handicapper David Levitch is along to present his tips for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks and the Derby itself. In the feedback section of the show, a mystery celebrity icon calls in to compare his Derby pick with those of Cherwa, Nelson and Flatter. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com. In The Money Media is back with a fantasy draft of the 2026 Kentucky Derby runners! Join host PTF alongside broadcaster Michelle Yu, Churchill Downs oddsmaker Nick Tammaro and Fox Sports Chris Fallica as they circle round robin through the field to pick their top choices for the 2026 Kentucky Derby. The field is pretty much set for the First Saturday in May with some noteworthy defections thus far being Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Ted Noffey and Risen Star Stakes winner Paladin. Trainer Brad Cox has the top two runners on the leaderboard with Florida Derby winner Commandment, giving Cox a repeat win in the Florida Derby after his runner Tappan Street bested eventual 2025 Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty, and Blue Grass Stakes winner Further Ado. Todd Pletcher eyes another win in the Run for the Roses, and a first for business magnate Mike Repole, with Arkansas Derby winner Renegade. A rare runner not from Bob Baffert emerged as victor of the Santa Anita Derby with Mark Glatt's pupil So Happy fronting the California charge while the precocious Louisiana Derby winner Emerging Market currently sits eighth on the leaderboard, with the Kentucky Derby likely to be just the third start in his career. Other runners currently slated for the Kentucky Derby include: Jeff Ruby Steaks winner Fulleffort Florida Derby runner-up The Puma Southwest Stakes champ Silent Tactic Wood Memorial winner Albus Santa Anita Derby runner-up Potente (trained by one Mr. Bob Baffert) Louisiana Derby runner-up Pavlovian, Wood Memorial runner-up Right To Party (conditioned by Ken McPeek, trainer of 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan) Virginia Derby winner Incredibolt Lecomte Stakes winner Golden Tempo Blue Grass Stakes runner-up Ottinho Jeff Ruby Steaks runner-up Stark Contrast Gotham Stakes winner Iron Honor and Florida Derby third-place finisher Chief Wallabee, trained by last year's winning Kentucky Derby trainer Bill Mott. Not to mention the foreign invaders to this year's Kentucky Derby, which currently includes Danon Bourbon from Japan, UAE Derby winner Wonder Dean and UAE 2000 Guineas winner Six Speed.

It wasn't that long ago when even large horse training operations used clipboards and index cards to manage all the complexities of their operations. That's all changed because of technology, which now allows training operations of all sizes, and the industry as a whole, to keep a much better handle on their affairs. In this episode of On the Lead, a joint venture between the Jockey Club and In the Money Media, Pete Fornatale and Shannon Kelly sit down with Tracy Attfield, the creator of TLore, and Maggie Sweet, former COO for Todd Pletcher and current Executive Director of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, to talk all about how technology has changed and improved the lives of trainers everywhere.

City of Light is a four-time G1 winner with tremendous speed and an outstanding physical. He stamped himself as one of the best middle-distance runners in the world with his 5 ¾-length romp in the G1 Pegasus World Cup and his win in G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. He's the winner of three graded stakes races in a row: the Malibu S. (G1) in his stakes debut, the Triple Bend S. (G1) and the Oaklawn H. (G2). He has over $5,600,000 in earnings to his name.City of Light is the best son to date of Lane's End's Quality Road, a top ten general sire. City of Light hails from the female family of Grade 1-winning millionaires Cacoethes, Subordination, and Careless Jewel. City of Light made an impact at the sales with multiple seven-figure yearling sales and over 120 six-figure yearling sales across his first three crops to go through the ring.2023 proved to be a breakout year for City of Light's runners. City of Light sired three 2023 TDN Risings, as well as multiple black type winner Mimi Kakushi who was victorious in the G3 UAE Oaks and the UAE 1000 Guineas, multiple stakes winner Eye Witness, and stakes winners Gaslight Dancer, Chop Chop, Sendero, Lights of Broadway, etc. His 2023 runners are highlighted by TDN Rising Star and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Fierceness. Who registered the highest Beyer for 2YO in 2023, with a 105 for his Breeders' Cup victory which led to him being named Champion 2YO Male. Fierceness's success continues into his three-year-old season with wins in the Florida Derby (G1), Travers S. (G1) and Jim Dandy S. (G2). (G1), Wicked Whisper, Frizette S. (G1) and Juju's Map, Alcibiades S. (G1).Not only do these top-level successes rank Liam's Map among the best young sires, it puts him alongside some of America's top stallions in history. Both Basin and Wicked Whisper hail from the first-crop of Liam's Map and since 1983, just eight other first-crop stallions have sired two Grade 1 winners, with only Danzig and Uncle Mo having sired both Grade 1 fillies and colts. An elite group of just five other stallions have sired winners of both the G1 Frizette and the G1 Hopeful—A.P. Indy, Storm Cat, Mr. Prospector, Bold Ruler, and Nasrullah. His success continued in 2024 with MGSWs Roses for Debra, Deterministic and Starting Over. Roses for Debra went on to top the Keeneland November Sale selling for $2,400,000. He saw 40 $150,000+ yearling sales, with a top price of $700,000.An $800,000 Keeneland September yearling, Liam's Map is out of the stakes-winning Trippi mare Miss Macy Sue, and is a half-brother to graded winner Not This Time and black-type winner Taylor S. Liam's Map's pedigree carries only one cross of Northern Dancer in the sixth generation, so his pedigree will be an ideal outcross for mares inbred to Northern Dancer. Since Liam's Map's pedigree largely consists of horses bred by or based on pedigrees of horses bred by John Nerud, it should also be beneficial to emphasize female families associated with Nerud other than Aspidistra.(UPDATED FEB 1, 2025)

Some early handicapping tips for Kentucky Derby 2024, an insider's look at one of the contenders in the race and some handicapping for this weekend's Preakness 2024 qualifiers are front and center on this week's Ron Flatter Racing Pod. National Horseplayers Championship winner Mike Gillum checks in from Indianapolis with his five horses whom he counts among the most likely winners of the Derby. Here is a hint. Two of them are not obvious choices. In other words, long shots. Trainer Whit Beckman talks about Honor Marie, his first Derby horse in his name. He also remembers when he was an assistant on the teams that Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown led to past Derby accomplishments as Super Saver's 2010 win and Good Magic's 2018 runner-up result. He also discusses who may ride Honor Marie on May 4 at Churchill Downs. Mark Midland is in the handicappers rotation to offer his tips on the Federico Tesio at Laurel Park, a Pick 3 that starts with the Bathhouse Row at Oaklawn and the Illinois Derby at Hawthorne. The three stakes are win-and-you're-ins for the Preakness. John Cherwa joins Ron to dissect the court ruling in favor of Churchill Downs Inc. in the Zedan Racing Stables' lawsuit that failed for now to get Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Muth and trainer Bob Baffert into next month's Kentucky Derby. This week's Ron Flatter Racing Pod has three main subjects, five races to handicap and one embarrassing admission. Eclipse Award winner Fierceness headlines Saturday's four Kentucky Derby points preps. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher talks about the champion colt's 2024 debut in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Todd also discusses two of his other prominent 3-year-olds who are Derby contenders. Bob Baffert's announcement that he will not have any of his horses in the Derby gets the once-over. Co-host John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times had an exclusive interview with Baffert that was the focal point of his report this week. He and Ron discuss what the absence of the Baffert horses will mean to his year's Derby. The tenuous future of Turf Paradise in Phoenix is discussed by Arizona Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association executive director Leroy Gessmann. How California's uncertain racing picture affects his state is also grist for the conversation.
