Strike sells crack in the projects (do we still call it that?). He can score a promotion if he executes another member of this lil mafia. What's he gonna do? Whine to his brother. Clockers! This is based on a Richard Price novel. Spike is doing his version of a Scorcese movie. We get a whole bunch of talent like Delroy Lindo, Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli and Keith David. 12 year old Jason would have told you this movie and book are masterpieces. What does adult Jason think?
How do you remake a classic? Well in the case of trying to bring back the LEGENDARY Private Detective John Shaft of the 1971 Gordon Parks cult hit starring Richard Roundtree, acclaimed director John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood, Poetic Justice) teamed with acclaimed writer Richard Writer (The Color of Money, Clockers) to....NOT remake it, they decided to "re-imagine" the character as a former NYPD cop trying to exact justice in late '90's New York City. Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Jackson now plays the titular character with Roundtree returning to play his uncle. This time around, Shaft is determined to bring justice for the racially-charged murder of an innocent young man at a NYC club. The murderer is played by Oscar-winner Christian Bale (The Fighter), the witness whom Shaft has to find is played by Oscar-nominee Toni Colette (The Sixth Sense).....and beyond that, Shaft also has to combat corrupt local cops PLUS local drug kingpin Peoples Hernandez played by Oscar-nominee Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction). Throw in some high-octane action, Busta Rhymes as Shaft's driver, AND....the iconic Oscar-winning theme song from Isaac Hayes and what do you get? Besides several Oscar nominees, you happen to get a surprisingly enjoyable (and very timely) action thriller to kick off Black History Month. Can you dig it? :) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Spike Lee's Summer of Sam should have been the perfect 1999 movie. After Lee's breakthrough 1989 film Do the Right Thing, he was on a roll in the 90s, giving us 1990s' Mo Better Blues, 1991's Jungle Fever, 1992's Malcolm X, 1994's Crooklyn, 1995's Clockers, 1996's Get on the Bus, and 1998's He Got Game. And so a gritty, Scorsese-esque New York crime like Summer of Sam headlined by the rising star Brody and Leguizamo at his most popular seemed like a no-brainer. And maybe because its nearly two and a half hour run time just didn't appeal to audiences in the middle of summer, for some reason SoS (which served as a near-perfect metaphor for the anxiety of pre-Y2K America) just never caught on with critics or at the box office. But has our equally volatile (and true crime obsessed) 2024 America made the film newly relevant? And where does it stand in Spike Lee's oeuvre? To discuss, John welcomed back film and culture writer and frequent guest Julia Sirmons to the show.

Arthur J. Nascarella's appearance in films is often as a mobster or police officer, but he has also portrayed fathers, a priest, and other good men. His notable film credits include a corrupt cop in Cop Land (1997), the hypocritical ambulance Captain Barney in Martin Scorsese's film Bringing Out The Dead (1999) and fed-up casino boss, Nicky "Fingers" Bonnatto in The Cooler (2003). He's played principal roles in multiple Spike Lee films, including New Jersey Drive (1995), Clockers (1995), He Got Game (1998), and Summer of Sam (1999). On television, he currently appears on the Showtime series Billions as the local pizza shop owner Bruno Capparelo, and he played fictional mobster and Capo Carlo Gervasi in The Sopranos. Before he became an actor, he was a 21-year veteran of the NYPD. He also served eight years in the United States Marine Corps.

Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about Lee taking his cinema close to Martin Scorsese, whether this movie is a continuation of film activism the filmmaker has been advancing his entire career and whether it attempts to have a difficult conversation with the viewer about the problem of fatherlessness in American communities. What the H? Exactly. The award-winning* Lickers discuss some of their favorite records filed under the letter H. -- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. This week we've got a special double feature, with a Spike movie we loved without knowing it was a Spike Lee joint, and one from the past that took a different look at the world of crime. In 2006, Spike dropped his most commercially successful film to date that just so happened to be a heist classic. But in 1995, he'd already explored the drug trade taking over lots of the projects. While both movies are different, they're a look at the different ways Spike approaches crime, police work, detectives, and his beloved New York. This week we watched the 1995 film Clockers. It's an under talked about masterpiece! Directed by Spike Lee and written by Richard Price, this anti-copaganda film is an early precursor to The Wire and a real operatic piece of work. We're joined by good friend and amazing actor Peter Grosz (Veep, The President Show, The Menu) and talk about how much emotional labor goes into organized crime! We also talk father figures, New York character actors and the bouquet of racial slurs that only Spike Lee can properly capture. Enjoy!

A two-hander again, featuring Marc Cooper, as we watch the backdoor pilot for STARFLEET LEGAL in this LeVar Burton-directed banger. Worf is on trial, but not for all the good reasons (Iike being a bad friend, brother, dad...) but for being bad at captaining a starship (he blew up a civilian transport without hesitation). It's a pretty cool mashup of Kurosawa's Rashomon and Spike Lee's Clockers as various characters give their point of view direct-to-camera, including Dax's from... THE HOLODECK!
