Martin "Marty" L. King's vision was to, "See the business of insurance restoration and damage repair become a profession." In this video, which originally aired as part of The DYOJO Podcast Episode 85, we talk to John Pletcher. Mr. Pletcher was awarded the 2022 MLK Award at the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) Annual Convention. John shares his fond memories of being mentored by and working with Marty. In the mid-1980s the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration (ASCR), which would eventually be re-branded as RIA, recognized Marty with a lifetime achievement award for his pioneering work since the late 1960s to carve a restoration niche in the larger cleaning and restoration industry as a standalone discipline from remodeling and general contracting or carpet cleaners and janitorial companies who engaged in restoration work as a sideline business activity. In 1986, the lifetime achievement award was renamed the Martin L. King (MLK) Award given to an individual who has, over many years, made significant and conspicuous contributions to the restoration profession. The August 2015 issue of Cleaning and Restoration Magazine (C&R) featured property restoration industry icon Martin “Marty” L. King in remembrance of his passing earlier that year in May. The title of the video attached to this article, “Igniter of an industry,” is recognized as a concise summary of Marty's contributions to fulfilling his vision for the craft of property restoration. Those four words were penned by another industry founding father, Cliff Zlotnik. For those interested in the history of our industry, Pete Consigli wrote an article recognizing the four faces on Mount Restoration for the same publication (C&R) in March of 2007 which the reader would do well to study. In the 2015 issue previously mentioned, Pete stated, “Marty had a vision for a new and emerging industry he called “damage repair.” Marty's life's work was to see the business of damage repair evolve into a profession. Fifty years after Marty had that dream, the legacy of the restoration industry is in the hands of those he influenced and many of those people are preparing to pass on the stewardship of the industry to the next generation. It is the hope of many that the next generation will take the industry to a place never imagined by the industry's founders.” As part of our ongoing commitment to research and share elements of property restoration history, you can read more and contribute historical content to PropertyRestorationHistory.com As Mr. Consigli says, "Reflecting on Marty's passing, it is my hope that his teachings and wisdom will be remembered with reverence. In this way, the industry will honor those who paved the path for its success today. This is how we will evolve as succeeding generations seek greatness in the restoration profession.” Additional resources on this topic: March 2007 issue of Cleaning and Restoration (C&R) Founding Fathers of Restoration Appearance on IAQ Radio Episode 75 A Brief Walk Through Restoration History (R&R Magazine) Building A Bridge From Restoration's Founding Fathers To The Modern Restorer (Cleanfax Magazine)

The “King” of Louisville, Byron King, is here to discuss the season under the Twin Spires in 2021. The Blood-Horse's Associate Editor will join John to handicap the stakes-laden card. Saturday's closing day stakes spectacular has an 11-race program and scheduled to be headlined by Godolphin's GI winner Maxfield in the featured $600,000 Stephen Foster (GII) – one of seven stakes events on the card. Maxfield, trained by Brendan Walsh, enters the Stephen Foster following a convincing 3 ¼-length win in the $400,0000 Alysheba (GII). The talented son of Street Sense is slated to be joined in the gate by fellow graded stakes winners Chess Chief (Dallas Stewart), Silver Dust (Bret Calhoun) and Warrior's Charge (Brad Cox). All three horses completed their major Stephen Foster preps Saturday at Churchill Downs. The Stephen Foster is a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” race for the $6 million Longines Classic (GI) on Nov. 6 at Del Mar. Here are the other probable runners for the undercard races to the Stephen Foster we will handicap the $300,000 Fleur de Lis (GII), run at 1 1/8 miles for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and up, Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” Distaff Division: Dreamalildreamofu (Brad Cox); Envoutante (Kenny McPeek); Point of Honor (Shug McGaughey); Singita Dreams (Phil Bauer); SpiceIs Nice (Todd Pletcher); and Vault (Brad Cox). · $300,000 Wise Dan (GII), run at 1 1/16 miles on turf for 4-year-olds and up: Field Pass (Mike Maker); In Love (BRZ) (Paulo Lobo); Ride a Comet (Mark Casse); Set Piece (GB) (Brad Cox); and Somelikeithotbrown (Mike Maker). Hugh Drexler, the Racing Secretary at Thistledown will make his first appearance on the show as he lends his insights to Ohio's biggest day of racing, anchored by the $500,000 GIII Ohio Derby. Drexler was born into racing as his father was a jockey and his grandfather and great-grandfather were trainers in Puerto Rico. A graduate of the Racetrack Industry Program in Arizona, he had internships with the Breeders' Cup and Santa Anita. He eventually did the paddock shows at Sunray and Rillito Park. Even old-timers familiar with the Cleveland area track, are saying that this year's edition is the strongest ever. In our era of small fields in stakes races, Drexler and his crew in the racing office drew a highly competitive field of 11. Nine of the eleven 3-year-olds will draw their regular riders or top jocks from major venues. Three graded stakes winner and two graded stakes-place runners are set to travel the 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. Weather sources indicated a 50-50 chance of rain. Breaking from the inside post Promise Keeper was made the tepid favorite, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Luis Saez. The $250,000 Lady Jacqueline at 9 furlongs has drawn together a talent-laden field of nine fillies and mares. Pletcher has Spice Is Nice entered here and at Churchill Downs with John Velazquez slated to ride.

Insight into the Telehealth Landscape: Bogdan-Lovis and Pletcher - Episode 24
The growth of Interoperability connects the data of everyone in the healthcare ecosystem, while ensuring cybersecurity. Hear from Dr. Tim Pletcher of MiHIN. In this episode, Brian Anderson interviews Dr. Tim Pletcher. He is the Executive Director of Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services, also known as MiHIN; the CEO of Bella Terra; the CEO of Interoperability Institute; and he is a visionary entrepreneur and a contemporary thinker in the field of healthcare IT. Tim explains that he’s always loved being at the intersection of technology and what helps people. “I've known all the way along that technology can make things better. And so I've always viewed my space as connecting the technology to what it is that needs to change or could change to make things better,” he says. Tim explains how he crafted his own, unique major at the University of Michigan, before entering the workforce. As he graduated, he worked in computer networking with the U of M’s medical center. Later, he ran a predictive modeling advanced analytics group and helped Central Michigan University get into the data sharing space. He then dives into his experiences at MiHIN, sharing how they’re striving to connect all the data of all people in the healthcare ecosystem—a concept known as interoperability—while ensuring the proper legal, technical, and cybersecurity controls are in place. MiHIN has now connected more than 1,400 pharmacies in Michigan and, recently, integrated with Great Lakes Health Connect, gaining access to their Longitudinal Health Record. Tim and Brian discuss Interoperability Land, a simulation where people can practice with synthetic data using fake hospital EHRs, doctors, and health plan databases. Augusto and MiHIN often partner together for what’s called Interoperathan, a connectathon where programmers test applications within Interoperability Land—all in a safe and synthetic space. The two men also explore various standards and the future of machine learning in the world of healthcare. We thank Tim for his time on the Augusto Podcast and wish him the best of luck in all his endeavors! Augusto HeathIT focuses on custom software design and development, cloud computing, and support solutions to enable our clients to realize their digital vision in Healthcare.
Interviews with Top US Nordic Ski Athletes and Personalities
Reid Pletcher is one of the most talented fun adventuresome guys you will ever meet or hear of. Despite adversity Reid squeezes as much juice out of life as possible which I love. A few highlights include racing Nordic ski World Cups, Racing road bikes as a professional U23, winning Nordic ski NCAA championships, falling when rock climbing and incurring a severe long term brain injury including losing much of his ability to speak English, winning SuperTour races, returning to World Cup racing, river rafting guiding, ParaOlympic athlete guiding, rollerblading through Europe, climbing Peru’s monster peaks, making the national finals on American Ninja Warrior, speed skating on the US national development team, and becoming a professional custom van building worker. If you want to be entertained, if you want to be inspired, or if you want your heart touched, check this out and get to know Reid better. This episode speaks a lot about mental health and also tells an incredible story of loss and then amazing adventure while living the "new" normal. I find Reid is an inspiring example of triumph over the most difficult adversity where his strong spirit and will overcomes the weakness of the body (or in Reid's case an extreme traumatic brain injury). I hope this episode inspires others to live more courageously and to "seize the day".
Next up in our short series of interviews with brewers from Boise ID, is Sean Pletcher from Clairvoyant Brewing. Our chum and co-host for these shows is beer aficionado Mark Naski, who sent us the beer samples. Clairvoyant is a great neighborhood local, and our sample is a vanilla Russian Imperial Stout that challenges the 10.2 ABV and drinks much lighter. Sean shows us the taproom and brewery in a whirlwind 360 tour, and we chat about what's drinking on tap. Cheers!

Chris Pletcher is the Business Developer (and “Jack of all trades”) at Finger Lakes ReUse....
The discussion continues with guest, Dr. Tim Pletcher, Executive Director of the Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN) joins The Dish on Health IT panel of senior consultants, Gary Austin, Jocelyn Keegan and Ken Kleinberg to discuss the role of Health Information Exchanges in healthcare, their role in the response to COVID-19 and what role they can serve in the future once TEFCA is finalized. Part 2 of the discussion jumps in with how MiHIN responded to COVID-19 by creating a separate group to serve public health needs during the crisis. MiHIN also created a telehealth service to better serve patients and support stay at home orders. Dr. Pletcher explained they acceleration the connections with labs and expressed his desire for results to be sent back via API instead of batch files to expedite results availability. Data links and analytics have taken on a whole new role during this time. MiHIN has taken on a support role which may have pumped the brakes on some innovation projects but there has been opportunity to increase the priority of other projects that could directly positively impact the pandemic response. Jocelyn explained why its so important to meet people where they are in order to make progress. This time is also a time for these simulated barriers to drop. She asked Dr. Pletcher how MiHIN is dealing with perceived security issues when working with innovation projects or partnering with new stakeholders. Dr. Pletcher responded by saying that their biggest challenge right now are Quest and Labcorp because they don't like to share data but this will be resolved through government intervention. The issues generally are not technical issues but business issues with one partner either not wanting to share data or restricting how the data can be used. The group went on to discuss how dropping the rules to facilitate the use of telehealth more readily will be a huge driver for change and innovation and hopefully the rules will remain suspended because patients should have more access via telehealth even over state lines. The conversation moved to data blocking with Gary pointing out EHRs are usually the ones getting the finger pointed at them for data blocking. Dr. Pletcher expressed that Epic or Cerner have never blocked or withheld data in Michigan so he doesn't know who it really is doing the data blocking. Will the US do more around pandemic surveillance like Taiwan and South Korea? Will HIEs support something like? Ken pointed out that some people don't want to be tracked in this way and will opt out or avoid it, however, if it's the only way a person is allowed to get into a ball game or something, they likely will. Dr. Pletcher explained that opt-in and opt-out is an archaic concept. There is a much better framework which would allow patients to express a more granular desire of how they want their data to be used. Doctors have choices too and when patients consent to receive treatment, physician choices come into play. The group highlighted where there are similarities between the financial and healthcare industries related to security and data access until the complexities of healthcare ends the similarities with identity being a major hurdle. With the explosion of patient apps, there is also a trust factor the that comes into play as far as understanding what data that can be obtained from patients apps can be trusted and whether they will look at HIEs as the consolidator of data vs going to Payers.
Guest, Dr. Gary Austin kicked off the episode by having Ken and Jocelyn give their perspective on HIEs. Ken went on to provide a primer on the history of HIEs and their varying role depending on the model before going on to mention that the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) may change the ecosystem once finalized. Dr. Pletcher explained that the MiHIN Group is comprised of 3 companies: MiHIN, Velatura & Interoperability Institute. Each company serves a specific purpose. Velatura was created to stay aware of what is happening at the national level and to operate nationally. The Interoperability Institute is a research and development group staffed by interns who are the next generation of Health IT professionals. HIEs were compared to public commons, like parks and good roads and bridges that people want to have but don't necessarily want to pay for. Dr. Pletcher pointed out that many HIEs were created prematurely before EHR standards and adoption was where it needed to be for valuable data exchange. Ultimately the value model for MiHIN is based on use cases that are then driven to mass adoption. The value lies primarily with the government and health insurance companies so payers primarily pay for MiHIN service so providers are incentivized to improve data quality while being subsidized to change their workflow to do so. What's the difference between the successful HIE vs struggling models? Dr. Pletcher pointed out that it's centered around the value the HIE is bringing to each stakeholder and building upon it over time while following the money. Jocelyn added that solving real problems and talking about the elephants in the room to deal with barriers head-on is crucial. She offered that having MiHIN join the HL7 Da Vinci Project is hastening progress. There is an opportunity for HIEs to reinvent themselves as more flexible API standards are developed and take advantage of fielded codifiable exchange tools to get things into real production environments and take out custom codes and massive production efforts. The team continued to discuss the financial model of HIEs and how they may evolve post-COVID-19. Will there be more government funding after COVID-19 calms down? Maybe, but there are a lot of people in need and the general funds at the state level are tapped. There may be some federal programs that look toward automation to cut down on some of he manual processes that are still eating up resources. There may be other non-government revenue streams that open up either with employers or by offering telehealth services at the HIE level. Jocelyn pointed out that while streamlining and making data liquid in general (whether through HIEs or just better adoption of APIs in general) is a money saver for health systems and payers, patients also win through getting better, more informed care and ultimately leading to better outcomes. Part 2 of this conversation is coming soon!
