Politics With Tom Speaker: Jackson Arnett, Tom Mercer
With the UK set to introduce the most significant changes to corporate criminal liability laws for a generation, how can companies prepare? Fraud is a hot topic currently. New technologies and an economic downturn have triggered a huge uptick in these criminal offences worldwide. With new UK legislation in the pipeline to bolster efforts to prevent (and prosecute) corporate fraud, companies are scrambling to prepare. In this podcast episode, we look at the elevated responsibilities, liabilities, and risks for organisations – spanning controls, governance, frameworks, and more. Along the way, we highlight the issues that should be top of mind for various company leaders, including board chairs and directors, senior managers, chief risk officers, audit committees, and general counsels. To tackle these issues, Ashurst's Ruby Hamid is joined by an expert panel of colleagues including Nisha Sanghani, Neil Donovan, Matt Russell and Tom Mercer. This is the first episode in a continuing mini-series about corporate crime and investigations. J.D.'s guet on this episode is Tom Mercer. Odds are, if you have worked in ministry, you have probably read at least one of Tom's many books. He gew up in a Christain homa and his father was a pastor. Tom had always thought he would go into the “family” business of ministry. However, he witnessed the mistreatment of his father by the church he was serving in, and decided he wasn't going to be a part of that. He left seminary and joined a friends marketing firm. It was a conversation with that Christian friend that finally made him realize he needed to get back to ministry. However, his time in marketing was not wasted. God has a way to make all things work together. Tom ultimately realized that the gospel needed to be represented (marketed) well “…conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ" (Phil 1:27). The rest is history. Tom has made his life's work encouraging Christ followers to represent the Gospel in a manner that will honor Jesus Christ and demonstrate the care and compassion God has for this world. Listen and be encouraged.

Travis welcomes Tom Mercer to the show for their second conversation. Tom has been a pastor and leader for over 40 years. Travis & Tom continue discussing the Oikos principle. So many churches have bottlenecks that prevent them from doing what they say they are trying to do and that is reaching people. Getting people in the door to the church is one thing but introducing people to Jesus and helping them follow Jesus is something else altogether. Perhaps the reason why evangelism/discipleship is so messed up is that we are looking at the wrong examples today-we have become consumers getting people in the door, and have focused on the presentation and not the lifestyle that it is in the world. They discuss the 5 steps of the Oikos principle and how to apply them in our lives. It's a practical jam-packed conversation on how to go about winning our worlds. Travis welcomes Tom Mercer to the show! Tom has been a pastor and leader for over 40 years, Nate Bargatze, pastoring High Desert Church in Victorville, California. They discuss the Oikos Principle-a simple approach to rethink how we share and live out our faith. It's simple when we think about it. What's the number one factor is that God used to bring you to Him? Or maybe a better question is, who was the person who influenced you the most to become a believer? If statistics are right, then it is probably someone you knew well. What does that mean for us? Listen in and find out! Learn more about Tom https://www.tommercer.com/ (here).

In this episode we go deep into the revolution that's sweeping the world, that of the Oat Milk revolution. Founded in 2006 by Tom Mercer from a stall at Waterloo East and now, over a decade on, MOMA Foods has recently won a great taste award for it's oat milk barista edition. Tom, whose market research strategy was nothing short of ingenious, discovered 4 years after MOMA's founding in 2010 that he had MS and incidentally lost vision in one of his eyes. This however didn't stopped Tom from growing a multimillion-pound business and kicking on. So, from humble beginnings on a market stall in East London, is Tom the Lord Sugar of the Oat world? In this episode we hear from Tom Mercer, Founder of MOMA Foods. Tom started his company in 2005 from a London railway arch, which remains its HQ to this day, with a mission of ‘making oats more awesome'. Disappointed by the lack of convenient and healthy breakfast choices for his morning commute he decided to solve this gap in the market and began selling oats from a makeshift stall in Waterloo station. Today, as one of the fastest-growing young food brands in the UK, MOMA now produces a range of 21 premium products stocked in leading supermarkets. Tom shares with us his advice on knowing when is the right time to leave full-time employment to commit 100% to your startup and tips for securing shelf space in UK supermarkets and online retailers. Tom's advice: Test your product to make sure it's as good as it can possibly be at the outsetBe objective about your product; just because you are enthusiastic about it does not mean it will necessarily be a commercial success. So find the balance between objectivity and passionIf your product is a) good and b) commercially viable, you will succeed in getting retail spaceWhen running a company, keep good structures in place: daily / weekly / quarterly meetingsInteracting with colleagues on a daily basis - even via Zoom - is valuableSustainability and inclusivity should be assumed and not be one of your key selling points, unless you're doing something groundbreaking Always look for innovations to inspire youTrade shows are a great way to get feedback on your product plus they can reinforce your own belief in itIf you'd like to contact Tom you can reach him via LinkedIn . How does God build the church and bring new people to faith? He uses all of us. The fact is, virtually all Christians find faith through a close friend or family member. This is the first message in our new series, and we invited Tom Mercer in to kick things off. He helps us understand how the people you're close to, your front row, is your "Oikos" - a term found in the Bible.

Tom Mercer started selling his home-made oat smoothies to commuters at Waterloo Station in 2005 and has since grown Moma into a highly successful brand whose products include a very popular instant porridge, oat milk and the best-selling bircher muesli in the country.
PJ Moon was our guest on LuncHour this week and we talked about the importance of having the right priorities in NextGen ministry. Mark 1:35-39 (Priorities over Urgency) My lack of clarity of priority created a culture of reaction, stifled creativity & collaboration, and suck away my vision to see. 3 Things I wish I would have done earlier that Jesus did: 1.Changed my Scorecard : Jesus was always showing the disciples that they were measuring the wrong things. •What is Success to you? •What do you measure? 2.Put more stock in my leaders : Jesus put all his stock with his leaders •They have the potential that you don’t •Care for them, don’t just use them •Simplify the language for them so they know what success is (5-3-1 Principle) 3.Less weekend consumed & more outward consumed : Jesus loved the local church, but spent most of his time outside of it. •We often are hitting walls that services can’t fix •Empower more leaders & free up your time Helpful Resources: The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=the+ruthless+elimination+of+hurry&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI966g5O2I5wIVj4bACh0UbQFrEAAYASAAEgL3fvD_BwE&hvadid=345562847002&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9028263&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=b&hvrand=2901372174105330662&hvtargid=kwd-810588876197&hydadcr=17836_10948729&tag=googhydr-20&ref=pd_sl_72cpey94jz_b Next Generation Leader by Andy Stanley: https://www.amazon.com/Next-Generation-Leader-Essentials-Future/dp/1590525396 Canoeing the Mountains by Tod Bolsinger: https://www.amazon.com/Canoeing-Mountains-Christian-Leadership-Uncharted/dp/0830841474/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=O3C270BS39VA&keywords=canoeing+the+mountains&qid=1579203104&sprefix=canoeing+the+%2Caps%2C157&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExQzJVQUFBU044MFZWJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTIzMjI3MkIzMTFDV1FTUkdNUSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMjA3MTYyMzdMUlkzMUtUUTRGTSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= 8 to 15, The World is Smaller than you think by Tom Mercer: https://www.amazon.com/World-Smaller-Than-You-Think/dp/0984036407/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=8+to+15%2C+The+World+is+Smaller+than+you+think+by+Tom+Mercer&qid=1579203119&sr=8-1 The Jesus Club by Brian Barcelona: https://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Club-Incredible-Stories-Schools/dp/0800798198
This episode marks the return of the “Entrepreneur In Focus” series with an exclusive interview between Nick and Tom Mercer, the founder of Moma Foods, a brand currently making waves internationally, and which began by selling their products from a converted filing cabinet, to hungry London commuters at train stations. If anyone can tell you what it’s truly like to go through the journey, to face down each challenge and take advantage of each opportunity, while also scaling up your business from humble beginnings, it’s Tom. KEY TAKEAWAYS Creating Moma Foods was the result of Tom identifying a gap in his own life; healthy breakfast on the go for people who have little time in the mornings. The first years of the business were spent with Tom working in every aspect of the business, including rising early and preparing the food, then taking it to the streets and selling it. Optimism and belief, coupled with youth, determination and energy, is what Tom credits with keeping him going in the early days. It seems as though these qualities are vital to many entrepreneurs when starting out. You need objectivity and realism when setting up a business. You need to be able to identify things that aren’t working, or pivot when things need to change. Knowing when to pivot comes from a blend of natural insight and constant evaluation from metrics that each business should have built in from the start. Passion is vital, and is hugely attractive when pitching. In terms of sales, Tom enjoys this side of the business because he’s passionate about the product, but equally he is keen to constantly innovate and disrupt. The operations are the backbone of any business. Making sure you have effective processes in place are essential. Passion and innovation and creation are the kickstarters, but remember to implement processes as you go. Physical health is becoming increasingly important to Tom. Suffering from MS, he now finds it important to take better care of his health, which allows him to work harder and keep him going. Getting the right team around you is so important to effective scale-up. Without the right team it’s impossible to grow. Find the right people and free yourself up to do other things BEST MOMENTS ‘It doesn’t really matter what happens to you in life. It’s what you do around it’ ‘You only fail if you give up’ ‘It’s important to look after yourself, so I try to eat healthily, exercise regularly and sleep more’ ‘I’m a glass half full person, so I never thought we’d fail’ ‘You have to change’ ‘Having a decent breakfast in the mornings can really impact your day' VALUABLE RESOURCES Nick’s Twitter Scale Up Your Business Podcast Moma Foods ABOUT THE HOST My name is Nick Bradley. On average, each of us has 8 to 15 people, whom God has supernaturally and strategically placed in our relational world so that He might use us to both demonstrate and discuss faith. The Greeks used one word to describe this personal world—OIKOS, or “extended household.” OIKOS is not an evangelism program. It's not an event. It's not an emphasis. The oikos principle is the heartbeat of Christ's Church. Jesus designed it, modeled it and taught us how to use it. Since then, it's been instrumental in bringing 95% of believers into the body of Christ. Tom Mercer has not only experienced the oikos principle firsthand, he has committed his life to helping the church understand and utilize this incredibly simple yet effective strategy for changing a world that just might be smaller than you think! Tom has been married to his wife Sheryl for thirty-seven years, and they have been blessed with three married children, who have in turn blessed us with the greatest core oikos imaginable—nine grandchildren. Tom received his formal education at Biola University and Talbot Seminary. He has been the Senior Pastor and primary teacher at the High Desert Church in Victorville, California since 1984. During that time, HDC has grown from 125 regular participants to over 12,000; from one campus to four. He has authored two books, 8 to 15: The World Is Smaller Than You Think and Common Sense Is the New Brilliance. These books highlight the oikos principle, which Tom believes is the simplest and most effective form of Kingdom growth that Jesus gave us.
This recording is of the Economic Development subcommittee of the Town Council. The meeting was held in Room 205 on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 beginning at 6:00 PM. The subcommittee is chaired by Tom Mercer. Members are Melanie Hamblen, Eamon McCarthy Earls, and Glenn Jones. Town Planning Director Bryan Taberner and Town Planner Amy Love also participated along with Town Administrator Jeff Nutting and Deputy Administrator Jamie Hellen. Resident and multi-small business owner Rich Frongillo participated for the sign discussion. The meeting runs just under an 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Have you ever wondered how your family looks at your faith journey? How important is it to share your faith with your family? Join Pastor Eric as he kicks off a new series titled "Family". This week he covers the Oikos concept as detailed in the book by Tom Mercer titled "8-15".
This recording is of the Franklin Town Government 101 event held on Saturday, January 27, 2018. The program featured Dr. Robert Krim, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Framingham State University Franklin State Rep. Jeff Roy has previously held positions on the Franklin School Committee and Town Council a conversation and question and answer period with Town Council representative Tom Mercer and School Committee member Denise Schultz, moderated by Steve Sherlock of Franklin Matters Yes, I had the privilege to be the moderator for the discussion portion and I think we did well. If you bump into someone around town, hopefully you’ll be able to make a connection and have a civil discussion on what we need to do to advance Franklin as a community.
Mike Camoin and Tom Mercer talk about Upstate Independent Filmmakers Network and the Screening of the Documentary Hawk on March 8 at Prodctors at 7:00 pm. You will have a chance to meet with with Indie Film Guru Bob Hawk
We had something of a Breakfast bonanza this week on FoodTalk – It's a shame that the show is broadcast live in the afternoon because Sue Nelson and Paul Andrews tried two of the finest products to help prepare you for the day ahead. While we were in the process of contacting Tom Mercer on the phone, we were also firing up the kettles in order to prepare the wonderful MOMA porridge that Tom created. You may have seen the luxury product in the main supermarkets, as Tom explains how he had the idea for the mix of fine and chunky oats and shares his predictions for future breakfast trends. One exception to our breakfast rule this week was our interview with Hayley Fyans from The Snaffling Pig. They have the tastiest pork products, but who says we can't make them a morning treat? For our next guest, the kettles were boiling again and by Jove we were smelling the coffee. Paula Lain came to our studio armed with a cafetiere and her amazing ‘Get in the Mood Coffee'. With flavours such as ‘Hectic Hamster', ‘Fancy Cat' and ‘Partied Out Panda', she is sure to have the coffee to match your mood. We'll be back next week for more FoodTalk but make sure you listen out for the first mention of the first ever ‘FoodTalk Awards' which will be coming this year…
In Part 2 we delve deeper into the article itself (Weick and Roberts, 1993) in order to understand how a high reliability way of organizing can be implemented, what are the steps, and how rigid the rules and procedures have to be. Join us for a detailed and rich in examples discussion of these very key, yet academically under-explored aspects of organization studies.
Based around a classic work by Weick and Roberts (1993) on Collective mind in organizations - where the authors observed and analyzed the way people on the deck of an aircraft carrier function in a collective manner - this episode brings you a discussion of how concepts of High Reliability (see also Episode 11) flesh out in real life! Joining us for this episode is a very special guest - Commanding Officer of the aircraft carrier on which Weick and Roberts performed their study, Read Admiral (retired) Tom Mercer! Tom is an extraordinary individual and a highly experienced leader, bearing responsibility for a multidisciplinary organization of 6000 people working everything from munitions and aircraft to baking bread and producing television. This is a must listen for a grounded, empirically saturated representation of the theoretical concepts of High Reliability Organization, and general management as such, that we cover on this podcast!
In this Summary of Episode 11, our resident High Reliability expert, Dr Ralph Soule, gives an overview of the context, the study and some of the key problems facing high-risk and high-reliability approaches to organizational design. Ralph mentions that Bierly and Spender (1995) provide a description of submariner culture and how it comes about through formal in informal practices. The author’s note that submariner’s culture is risk-averse, shared between different ships, and the result of constant training in theory, operations, and responding to emergencies. The training emphasizes specific terminology, communication behaviors, formal hierarchy, and detailed knowledge of system design and performance.
