Send us a text David was a man after God's own heart, and we all identify with him because of the way he lived his life. He was out there, you know, leading people making mistakes. I just just loving God passionately with his heart dancing before God. I mean, he was enjoying life with God. But there are a lot of lessons to learn from his life. I have the text there, and you can follow them all in your handout as well, but follow these texts, and let's learn from his his life in the next few minutes. In Second Samuel chapter 23 he lists out more than 30 friends who have shaped his life. I mean, that's a good discipline. Think back across your life, of the friends that you've had and how they have shaped your life. You know we talk about in the seven essentials for finishing well, the second one is, don't stop connecting with friends.Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. In this powerful sermon, Pastor Karl wraps up the study of the Book of Ruth, focusing on Chapter 4. He explores the profound themes of God's providence, redemption, and love woven throughout the narrative. Pastor Karl highlights how Boaz, as a kinsman-redeemer, mirrors Christ's sacrificial love for humanity, taking on Ruth's baggage without hesitation to redeem her. Through the lens of Ruth's story, we see a beautiful picture of Jesus pursuing the person, not possessions, and the transformative power of obedience to God's command. Pastor Karl emphasizes that our obedience, paired with God's providence, leads to convergence—working all things together for good. This episode reminds us that no matter our past, Christ redeems us fully, inviting us into His story of grace and love.Watch all our sermons on our YouTube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Send us a textWe meet Joshua first when he was selected as one of the 12 tribes to spy out the new land from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun (Numbers 13.8).Early FaithJoshua (along with Caleb) spoke with confidence about how God would take them into the promised land and defeat the enemies. He had great confidence in God who would be with them.If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and he will give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against Yahweh, and you will not fear the people of the land, because they will be our food. Their protection has been turned from them; Yahweh is with us. You should not fear them. (Numbers 14.8-9)Leadership in Later YearsAt 80 years of age, Joshua was entrusted with the task of leading Israel after Moses' death. God commanded him:Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. (Joshua 1.6-7)Throughout the conquest and throughout his life, Joshua remained full of faith and trust in the Lord. As he came to the end of his life, he challenged the children of Israel with these famous words:If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Through the story of Ruth, a Moabite widow, and her mother-in-law Naomi, Pastor Karl illustrates how God's providence brings blessing to those who trust and obey Him, even in the face of hardship. Send us a textAs I think about the life of Naomi and how she lived her later years, I cannot help but think of a principle that we learn in the Advent story 3 you cannot tell the end from the beginning. Apart from the Old Testament promises of the Messiah ad the angelic announcements of Messiah's birth, the majestic destiny of Jesus might never be guessed from His humble beginnings and surroundings. As we read the opening lines of Naomi's story one might never guess how the story will end. How anyone lives out the final years of life, like Naomi, is learned as we intentionally trust our lives to a sovereign God and live obediently following His hand.Naomi's story begins with incredible hardship. Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi; and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. Now they entered the land of Moab and remained there. Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left with her two sons. They took for themselves Moabite women as wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. And they lived there about ten years. Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and the woman was bereft of her two children and her husband (Ruth 1.1-5).Support the show"Finishing Well Ministries aims to encourage and inspire aging Christians to understand and embrace God's calling in their later years, equipping them to actively pursue and fulfill His calling. In this episode, Tim and Mike continue the conversation about the complexities of biblical interpretation, exploring how various contexts—textual, cultural, and personal—shape our understanding of scripture. What does "biblical" really mean, and why does it matter in today's world? Mike and Tim explore the "world of the text," the cultural and historical contexts "behind the text," and the modern assumptions we bring "in front of the text." With humor, humility, and intellectual depth, they examine how varying social locations, traditions, and cultural frameworks shape our understanding of scripture, and how the Spirit of God works through it all. From discussing the challenges of "cruciformity" to navigating cultural issues like justice, faith, and the role of the church in society, this episode invites listeners to wrestle with the tension between timeless truths and modern interpretations. Drawing on examples like the parable of the prodigal son and the story of Ruth, they highlight the importance of curiosity, critical thinking, and engaging diverse perspectives to faithfully live out the teachings of Jesus.  How do we discern faithful readings of scripture in a world filled with self-defined "biblical" interpretations? They do this by appealing to narratives in Lurianic Kabbalah to do with reincarnation, and by projecting trans identities onto biblical personalities such as Joseph, Dinah, Isaac, and Michal. Such narratives have been promoted by organisations such as Keshet (the American Jewish LGBT charity, whose judgment in promoting these texts must be questioned).I have explored the texts behind these arguments, including quite a bit of halacha (Jewish legal texts) to do with Michal's tefillin. This quest took me on a very dark journey that ended with homophobia, misogyny and an accusation of witchcraft.Warning: You will be offended! This is the second half of a recording of a Zoom shiur (lecture) that I gave on Sunday 23 February. This is a more in depth and uncensored version of a similar session that I gave at Limmud Festival in December 2024 with a slightly different title. In Part 1, we explored the background to these narratives and the link with gender identity ideology, and I discussed the narratives relating to Dinah, Joseph, and Isaac. We discovered that far from being transgender, Isaac is understood to have been an immature boy with a “female soul” who matured into a proper man who could give his wife children. We ended Part 1 on the question of what the “soul” really means in these narratives, and whether Judaism is really compatible with the soul / body or mind / body dichotomy inherent in the idea of a “gender” separate from sex. Here in Part 2, we explore the complex case of Michal. The legend that she wore tefillin will lead us on a journey through the halachah (Jewish legal texts) to do with women and tefillin, and finally to the same text from Chayim Vital that Abby Stein credited for inspiring Stein's transition when interviewed in 2019. They do this by appealing to narratives in Lurianic Kabbalah to do with reincarnation, and by projecting trans identities onto biblical personalities such as Joseph, Dinah, Isaac, and Michal. Such narratives have been promoted by organisations such as Keshet (the Jewish LGBT charity, whose judgment in promoting these texts must be questioned).I have explored the texts behind these arguments, including quite a bit of halacha (Jewish legal texts) to do with Michal's tefillin. This quest took me on a very dark journey that ended with homophobia, misogyny and an accusation of witchcraft.Warning: You will be offended! This is the first half of a recording of a Zoom shiur (lecture) that I gave on Sunday 23 February. This is a more in depth and uncensored version of a similar session that I gave at Limmud Festival in December 2024 with a slightly different title. In this episode, I cover the background to these narratives and the link with gender identity ideology, and discuss the narratives relating to Dinah, Joseph, and Isaac. Michal's story will have to wait until next week (Part 2) as she deserves your full attention. (The full shiur is just too long for a single sitting.)We discover that far from being transgender, Isaac is understood to have been an immature boy with a “female soul” who matured into a proper man who could give his wife children. We end on the question of what the “soul” really means in these narratives, and whether Judaism is really compatible with the soul / body or mind / body dichotomy inherent in the idea of a “gender” separate from sex.You are best off watching this on video, as I speak quickly, and the slides contain important information. Discover the Cosmic Christ: a universal force connecting creation, faith, and cosmic unity! --- Join and support the community: https://www.creationspaths.com/ Explore the concept of the **Cosmic Christ** within the framework of **Creation Spirituality** and Christopagan thought. Hosted by **Charlie and Brian**, both Christopagan Druids, the discussion delves into distinguishing the Cosmic Christ from the historical or mythological Jesus, presenting the Cosmic Christ as the universal presence connecting all creation, akin to the "cosmic force" in _Star Wars_. The conversation traces biblical and historical roots of the Cosmic Christ concept, referencing Pauline epistles, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the _Book of Enoch_. It critiques traditional fall-redemption theology, advocating for a view of the crucifixion as a reflection of humanity's failure to embrace love and unity. Themes of justice versus revenge, ecological destruction as a modern crucifixion, and personal alignment within the biblical narrative are woven into the dialogue. The discussion concludes with a call to embrace hope, seek solutions, and embody the values of compassion and creativity inherent in the Cosmic Christ. The Bible provides readers with glimpses into the personalities of Jesus' Twelve Apostles, but little is know about the details of their lives. That can be both a challenge and creative opportunity for the actors and writers on the set of the hit series “The Chosen.” “We know he's known as ‘Doubting Thomas,'” says Joey Vahedi, the actor who plays Thomas on the multiseason series. But the question that Vahedi says he has the opportunity to answer is “why is [Thomas] that person?” The writers of the show, Vahedi says, “take such great liberty with bringing this human perspective to all the characters, because we got to remember they're not saints yet.” The character of Thomas is significantly developed in the first three episodes of season four of “The Chosen,” which are in theaters now. Season four picks up right where season three left off, and “I think you get to see a much, much sweeter and kinder side to Thomas,” Vahedi says. “He's out of his shell, finally feels comfortable. He's ready. And on the flip side of that, Jesus' message is getting so much more radical, to the point where it is dangerous for everybody now.”Even outside of the Apostles, the latest season of “The Chosen” shows how the message of Jesus is affecting everyone who hears it. Kirk B. Woller, who plays the role of the Roman soldier Gaius, says his character is “toying with” the message he's hearing Jesus speak. “There's just great responsibility to me in all of this” to portray his character accurately, Woller said.Woller and Vahedi join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share their own stories of how they became a part of “The Chosen” cast, and the hardest and most rewarding parts of playing their roles as they develop further in the new season. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome to "New Path New You," the podcast that guides you on a transformative journey towards becoming the man God intended you to be. I'm your host, Ron Cool, and today, we're diving deep into the heart of leadership and faith in Episode 5: "Faith in Action - Leadership Lessons from Biblical Characters."In this episode, we explore the lives of iconic biblical leaders who exhibited extraordinary faith and leadership. We draw valuable lessons from their stories and discuss how these principles can be applied to modern leadership contexts. Our journey begins with the story of Moses, who led the Israelites out of Egypt. Through his unwavering faith, he trusted in God's guidance and witnessed miracles that defied human understanding. In the book of Exodus, we find the profound verse:Exodus 14:14 (NIV) "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."Moses teaches us the importance of patience, trust, and allowing God to work through us as leaders.Next, we turn to the story of David, a shepherd boy who became one of Israel's greatest kings. Confronted by the giant Goliath, David didn't rely on his own strength but on the Lord's. The powerful verse from 1 Samuel resonates deeply with his story:1 Samuel 17:45 (NIV) "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel."David's courage teaches us to place our trust in God's power, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. In the New Testament, we meet the transformed life of the Apostle Paul. Once a persecutor of Christians, he became a powerful leader in spreading the Gospel. His journey reminds us of the limitless potential for change and redemption through Christ. The scripture from Philippians holds a special message for us:Philippians 4:13 (NIV) "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."Paul's life exemplifies the strength and transformation that faith can bring to our leadership journeys. As we wrap up this episode, I invite you to reflect on the lives of these remarkable biblical leaders and the powerful lessons they offer. How can you apply their principles to your own leadership journey? Remember, God's plan for you is extraordinary, and you are called to step into the leadership role He designed for you.Thank you for joining us on "New Path New You." Stay tuned for our next episode as we continue our journey towards becoming the men God intended us to be. From the time she was a young girl, Rev. Wil Gafney knew something was wrong. Every major biblical figure, in both art and popular culture, was represented as white. Now a scholar and Episcopal priest, Gafney paints a more accurate picture of our Afro-Asiatic forebearers, making a case that engaging with the racist history of biblical criticism and western art is key to forging a more just future. Gafney also briefly discusses her love of sci-fi and Star Wars and tries to dissect the animus aimed at black actors that ventured into the Star Wars universe. She also discusses her love of Hebrew, praying in synagogues and connection with Jewish community, and some of the fraught nature of inter-religious interactions. Though the discussion isn't High Holiday-themed per se, the content seems apt for the days of awe as it challenges all of us to question our assumption and, perhaps, to atone for harm caused intentionally or unintentionally.
