This session shares the Town Council Meeting of Wednesday, June 4, 2025. The FY 2026 second budget hearing continued from May 22, was reopened to make the adjustments due to the failed override June 3, 2025. All 9 Council members participated in the Council Chambers. Quick recap:After the 5 minutes late start, the public hearing on the FY 2026 budget was resumed from the May 22 session.Town Administrator Jamie Hellen walked through the recap and explained the Option A & B using 3 slides (see below) as well as the Option A & B voting docs (linked below)Chief Lynch, Chief McLaughlin, Supt Giguere, and Library Director Oti spoke of the cut impacts to their operations but approved of them as necessary due to the failed overrideSupt Giguere confirmed the full details of their cuts would be reviewed with the School Cmte at their meeting June 10. Of the projected 10-15 personnel, he confirmed likely 12 FTE positions, some teachers, some retirees not being backfilled and other personnel across the district as well as the fees would need to remain as they are this yearThe public then had an opportunity to comment or question the cuts as proposed. Those in Chambers went first before those on Zoom, and all were covered before the Councilors had their turn. The vote finally came to approve the cuts as proposed:2 personnel from Police Dept (currently open slots not to be backfilled as had been planned)2 personnel from Fire Dept (currently 1 open position not backfilled, and the last hired will also be leaving)This does take the 3rd ambulance offline increasing response times and creates a lose of revenue (for the ambulance runs if required to hospital)1 admin position for Town Administrators office1 from Planning & Community Development1 from Board of Assessorsthe part-time nurse at the Senior CenterDPW cuts their summer intern program (unspecified number of positions for summer help)Library Sunday hours (during the winter, there are open during the summer)additional expenses were reduced to bring to the total required (see Option B for details)Personnel cuts by my tally = 8 Town side, 12 school side, plus expenses (PS - this tally was confirmed with our Town Administrator Jamie Hellen via email) The meeting then went through the long series of votes to approve the final budget, the salary for the Town Clerk, the Community Preservation Act budget before closing just after 11 PM--------------Franklin TV video is available for replay -> https://www.youtube.com/live/_f72Yd8VXz0?&t=316 The agenda doc was updated Wednesday afternoon to add the Option B and Options A & B comparisons for the discussion on the budget cuts.Option A & B Comparison -> https://www.franklinma.gov/DocumentCenter/View/5883/FY26-Control-Sheet-and-Voting-Doc-COMPARISON Option B -> https://www.franklinma.gov/DocumentCenter/View/5882/FY26-Control-Sheet-and-Voting-Doc-OPTION-B Full agenda -> https://www.franklinma.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_06042025-1769My full set of notes as written during the meeting
Los Angeles City Council just approved a $14 billion budget that perfectly captures everything wrong with government priorities. While slashing police hiring and fire department funding, they're celebrating keeping homeless spending at "only" $7,000 per person per month—down from the previous $17,000. Is anyone surprised they're calling this progress? We break down how LA officials are doubling down on failed policies while creating a structural deficit, using emergency funds for regular services, and building $1.5 million per door micro-units that most city employees couldn't afford. Meanwhile, the fire department sits with 100 unused rigs they can't afford to repair, and police hiring gets cut in half during rising crime. With 75,000 homeless individuals costing taxpayers over $525 million annually in this program alone, where exactly is all this money going? Councilwoman Tracy Park called it "wasteful spending" and "a taxpayer boondoggle," but the budget passed anyway. What's your breaking point with government waste? Have you seen this kind of backwards prioritizing in your city? Hit subscribe if you're tired of watching your tax dollars disappear into administrative black holes while real problems get worse.

An overwhelming 64% of Denver's firefighters voted last month that they have “no confidence” in their fire chief, Desmond Fulton. But Mayor Mike Johnston holds the power to hire and fire the chief, and he brushed off the firefighters' vote. So as the fire union prepares for another round of collective bargaining with the city, producer Paul Karolyi is sitting down with CBS investigative reporter Brian Maass to break down where the bad blood between the Fire Dept. and the mayor started, dig into some fresh data on what the Fire Dept. actually does, and talk about where the complicated internal politics of the department will go from here. Do you or someone you know have experience working at the Denver Fire Department? We would love to talk to them about the diversity question and everything else. Episode 9-15 – Assistant Chief Jacob JohnsonWe are proud to have Asst. Chief Jacob Johnson from the Pearland Fire Department in Pearland TX. Jacob first joined us on “5-Alarm task Force,” when he was a Captain. And it was easy to see how dedicated he was, and still is, of course, to being the best firefighter and officer that he could be. In this episode, we discuss the “how and why” of, not only his success, but that of the department. With their seventh station already on the way, they also have plans for Station 8 and Station 9. We discuss the remarkable success of the Pearland Fire Department and how successful their recruiting efforts are. Beyond recruiting, their retention level is particularly good. As Jacob tells it, one of the most important criteria is treating their residents as well as their members as “family.”Sit back and enjoy the videocast or the audio podcast and see what you can learn from Asst. Chief Jacob Johnson.Watch the interview on YouTube at https://youtu.be/v49vDfNNv20 and the audio version on your favorite podcast platforms! We still your help to raise funds for our Brothers and Sisters who were deeply involved in the major fires. Please remember, many, many of the firefighters who fought, “tooth & nail” the major blazes, but they lost their homes, vehicles, clothes, etc. Please visit our website at https://www.5-AlarmTaskForceCorp.org.

Adam returns from his evacuation to Vegas with an update on the status of his condo and the surrounding structures on California's Pacific Coast Highway. He also discusses some clips that have gone viral in the wake of the wildfires, including one of a black, female, firefighter discussing the need for diversity in the LAFD and another of LA's water chief explaining why everything at the Dept. of Water & Power is done with “an equity lens.” Next, Adam recounts going through the process to become a firefighter and the one test that undid his application. He also discusses how the destruction in Los Angeles may streamline regulations when it comes to rebuilding the city, a Palisades woman ambushing Governor Newsom, and Hunter Biden losing his Malibu rental house. Then, Dawson joins to read the news including stories about Gov. Newsom issuing an executive order to suspend regulations for rebuilds, the LA fire chief saying the city failed residents in wildfire prep, and Mark Zuckerberg telling Joe Rogan that Biden officials would scream and curse when seeking removal of Facebook content. Luke Schneider is the Founder and CEO of Fire Dept. Coffee, a certified veteran-owned coffee company. Fire Dept. Coffee gives back to and supports injured firefighters and has been named to the Inc. 5000 list three years in a row. Luke is also a retired firefighter, paramedic, and US Navy veteran. In 2023, he received the Leadership award for Citizenship from the Specialty Food Association. In this episode… In a business environment dominated by duplicate products, brands must employ creative measures to stand out and capture consumers' attention. This requires more than having a widespread presence on popular social media apps. How did a community-focused coffee brand gain recognition in thousands of Walmart locations? Former firefighter and US Navy veteran Luke Schneider credits his coffee company's growth to a robust community presence and a resonant mission. He emphasizes building a local community to convey your mission and cultivate a brand identity. For a broader reach, you can communicate your message on various social media platforms by targeting audiences who align with your mission to differentiate your products in the market. Luke maintains that a motivated team and influential culture can promote your community efforts and amplify your mission. In today's episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris chats with Luke Schneider, the Founder and CEO of Fire Dept. Coffee (FDC), about building a robust community and team to scale. Luke discusses social selling, FDC's subscription offers, and how the company received its first publicity and navigated a trademark lawsuit.
Alright, so there are a few things on your plate today that may involve the fate of America, but the Garage Hour is nothing if not distracting (with all the cars, trucks, beers, guns, parts, fixing, kerplosions and awesomeness) - let us help you escape, if just for a minute: lithium battery fires don't just kill people, they kill fire departments, household spies hiding in your vacuum, how diamond mines can tell you about cars and trucks being stored instead of sold, and how Kalifornistan keeps taking steps to kill itself. There's also some Hunter S. Thompson goodness, the human body (and why some more efficiency would be good), coyotes versus dogs (and their poop!), and a brief history of commies in government. Now go vote.

Today I sat down with Lt. Jay Walsh retired from 59 Engine on the FDNY. Lt. Walsh has over 40 years of experience in the Fire Service. He started as a teenager in the Newington Volley FD and then got hired by New Britain CT. Fire Dept where he was assigned to Engine 1 and also was one of the first firefighters to start the New Britain Rescue 1 Co. He later joined the FDNY , serving at 75 engine and 33 truck in the Bronx. He would eventually end up in 59 Engine as a LT., where he would eventually retire from in 2018. His knowledge and experience are second to none. And now he shares that knowledge, by teaching proby firefighters at the CT. Fire Academy. And he also shares his experiences as a career firefighter, from the volleys, rescuing a woman at a fire, 9/11 and time in the Harlem Zoo. In my opinion one of the best fire officers to have worn the uniform. Thank you and I hope you enjoy the interview.

In this episode I sit down with my dad Mike Kerr. We discuss the fire service back in the day and how it has changed. My dad tells his story about his love of the fire service as a kid and how he got started as a volunteer in Prince Georges County in Greenbelt, to becoming a career firefighter with the DCFD as a Tillerman at T12. Our family moved from Prince Georges County to Montgomery County, where he became a volunteer with the Burtonsville Vol. Fire Dept. He moved through the volunteer ranks and eventually became the longest serving chief. He honed his leadership skills and became a respected Chief through the county.
Today on DWB, I'm joined by Navy Veteran and retired Firefighter, Luke Schneider, Founder & CEO of Fire Department Coffee, a veteran-owned and firefighter-run coffee company that is dedicated to roasting high-quality coffee while giving back to first responders and other heroes in need.Inspired by the vital role that coffee plays in helping firefighters stay alert and energized through long shifts, Fire Dept. Coffee was founded by Luke and his wife, Kate in 2016 What fascinates me the most about Luke and his company is their ability to gain such massive traction in a saturated market such as coffee and CPG as a whole.
