Long before drag was a mainstay of reality television, LGBTQ+ folks turned to drag for fun, to challenge society and explore their gender through an artistic, comedic and performative lens.Sadly, we recently lost two fierce drag legends who meant a lot not just to us, but the world.Heartbreaking. In March, JoJo Baby died from cancer at the age of 51.An early guest of our podcast, JoJo was a beloved Chicago nightclub personality and entertainer who dazzled patrons with their outlandish looks and puppetry. And just last week, Heklina, who shaped the modern drag scene in San Francisco with their wildly popular and irreverent Trannyshack shows at the club STUD was found dead at the age of 55 in her London hotel by her dear friend Peaches Christ.Today we remember two queer culture legends, Chicago's JoJo Baby and San Francisco's Heklina, who both died this past month and the impact they had on so many people's lives, including ours.Plus-➤ Everybody's daddy Pedro Pascal plays a gay cowboy in Pedro Almodóvar's Western Short ‘Strange Way of Life.'➤ Billy Porter is set to play novelist, activist and essayist James Baldwin.➤ Equality Florida issues an advisory warning for LGBTQ+ travelers.Episode #3074

We are heartbroken.San Francisco legend Heklina was found dead in her hotel room on Monday morning in London by her longtime friend, collaborator and co-star Peaches Christ. Over the years we taped so many good shows with Heklina that it's hard to pick one, so this week we're reposting our favorites to celebrate the amazing life and legacy of this amazing comedian and drag queen. Along with her gal pal Peaches Christ, Heklina shaped and created the modern drag scene in San Francisco with their wildly popular and irreverent Trannyshack shows and nights at STUD. After the name change of the shows to Mother, Heklina and Peaches moved their events to Oasis, a bar she co-founded with her longtime friend D'Arcy Drollinger. Heklina touched so many people's lives, including ours. A fierce, original drag queen with a wonderfully twisted sense of humor, Heklina was a popular guest in the early days of our podcast Feast of Fun, back when we called it Feast of Fools. Later on she went on to create her own podcast “Drag Time with Heklina” where she interviewed many notable queer artists including Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters. Back in 2006, our first live podcast in San Francisco featured Heklina in it, and she was so befuddled about what the Internet was that in a rare moment, she showed up out of drag in her everyday clothes for the show. Despite always being super busy, Heklina took time to visit with us whenever we were in town or when she came to Chicago. It's devastating to think about the sorrow, but it's comforting to know that her humor, style and rascally nature lives on in the lives of so many artists, LGBTQ+ folks and the people who loved her in San Francisco. Thanks for all the memories, laughs and fun Heklina. Here's what we think her twisted sense of humor would have said about her own death: “The next roast of Heklina will be held at Fleischmann's Crematorium.”--------- Originally posted FOF #2344 - Heklina Will Not Be Silenced - 06.14.16Heklina is a living legend- she started her amazing drag show in San Francisco way back in 1996. This iconic night of drag, then known as Trannyshack, ignited the careers of countless entertainers including Lady Gaga, Peaches Christ and Ana Matronic.Over the years, Heklina saved her dollar tips and got some friends to invest in her own club Oasis only to rebrand the drag show as Mother and not without a little controversy.Today, Heklina joins us to take a look at the horrific shooting in Orlando and how gay bar owners are responding to the violence.Plus--• How drag queens have gone from being fringe acts to mainstream attractions.• Why San Francisco can't have nice things.• Facebook may delete all your photos if you don't install this app.• Heklina's tips on picking up a straight guy on Craigslist!

We are back for a new season of Drag Time with Heklina! We have Monique Fauxnique!  Fauxnique is an artist, a performer, a choreographer and a writer. You might know her as the first cis-woman to win a major drag queen pageant. Justin Vivian Bond calls her ‘the Jane Goodall of drag' and you have never heard a Lady Bunny impression as good as Fauxnique's. She has a new book which literally will not stay on the shelves at City Lights Books, which examines a life of performance and recalls some of the more indelible moments of Trannyshack. It's called “Fauxqueen: A Life in Drag by Monique Jenkinson” available January 25th, 2022 from Amble press  or wherever you get fine books, and we love it!  Listen in to this episode to Drag Time to find out why! We have the very cute Frankie Sharp! Frankie has nightlife in his DNA and we ask him all about his San Francisco start back in 1998, his influences like Trannyshack, spending time at The Stud, and throwing parties with Oakland-based writer, performer, and director Brontez Purnell at The Gangway. This episode is a masterclass for any of you P.T. Barnum hopefuls lurking out there. Frankie tells us about growing into the New York nightlife impresario he is today. Frankie is known for hosting popular NY parties such as Westgay at Westway and he loves bizarre and beautiful. He is now the owner/operator of New York's brand new four-story nightclub “The Q” along with Jake Shears, Billy Porter, Charlie Carver, Zachary Quinto, Bob Fluet, and Alan Picus. We find out everything you need to know about the vibes, the programming, and the queer world created by Frankie and his supporters. Frankie Sharp says we're entering a queer nightlife renaissance and The Q is the slightly seedy, very chic, towering enclave that is equal parts theater and club house, and 100% Frankie's love-letter to New York. Frankie tells it all on this episode of Drag Time with Heklina!

Julie and Casey sit down with legendary San Francisco dancer and drag performer, Monique Jenkinson, aka FAUXNIQUE to talk about performing femininity, both through drag and not, finding authenticity through practices of artifice, and the journey of a Good Dance Student to nightclub performer, and get some San Francisco Dragucation.  *Note- we use the “c***” word a LOT in this episode, so take care for sensitive ears. TOP TAKEAWAYS Drag is not (just) men in heels—it’s a rich, smart, funny, scrappy performance tradition that uses the body and artifice to access larger themes. Other kinds of drag performance of femininity include the good girl persona, and the world of ballet. Your curiosity is a prelude to discovering your wants- conditioning can make wants hard to identify, curiosity allows you to find them, lose them and find them again. Owning your curiosity, desires, and wants is crucial Practices of artifice can be a version of authenticity Balance is the answer to binaries—balance allows for dynamic movement and change between points. Your strut is the embodiment of your energy as you enter a space, whether that is virtual or physical, and being with your right to be seen with the willingness to contribute what you have. I made herstory as the first cis-woman to win a major drag queen pageant and subsequently my solo performance works have toured nationally and internationally in wide-ranging contexts from nightclubs to theaters to museums — from Joe’s Pub, New Museum and the historic Stonewall in New York City, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, ODC Theater, The Stud, CounterPulse and de Young Museum in San Francisco, and in Seattle, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Provincetown, London, Edinburgh, Berlin, Zürich, Paris, Reykjavik, Rome, Catania and Cork. I have created space for kids to dress drag queens at a major museum and created college curricula. I played the DIRT (originated by Justin Vivian Bond) in Taylor Mac’s Lily’s Revenge and Eurydike in Anne Carson’s ANTIGONICK. I engaged in public conversation with Gender Studies luminary Judith Butler and RuPaul bestie Michelle Visage within days of each other. I am currently writing a memoir. Honors include residencies at Headlands Center for the Arts, Tanzhaus Zürich and Atlantic Center for the Arts, an Irvine Fellowship and residency at the de Young Museum, GOLDIE and BESTIE awards and 7X7 Magazine’s Hot 20. Has the say-anything 30-something grrl-power brunches of Sex in the City really come so far from the women's consciousness-raising circles that fueled the women's liberation movement of the 60's and 70's? Yes and no, especially Trannyshack's all-drag version at Rebel - with drag queens (some that were even born women), drag kings, and even raunchier more irreverent jokes than the HBO version. Heklina's Carrie Bradshaw is hilarious. Next-level ridiculous and absurd while still eerily recognisable as are the rest of the foursome: Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. Trannyshack performs episodes of Sex in the City at Rebel in two shows every Wednesday night. Hilarious, saucy, and irreverent. Join me and my girls at opening night of Trannyshack's Sex in the City for giggles and even empowerminty strip-mining of dominant culture sexual foibles. Glorious fun and a great girl's night out even if you are not (always) a girl.

If you are gay, transgender, kinky, or any kind of black sheep sometimes there are Christmases that you make your own "intentional family" out of friends, roommates, and people that accept you the way you are. Heklina started the legendary drag show Trannyshack in San Francisco and for Christmas she's been taking Golden Girls episodes to the stage, the "girls" played by Drag Queens (men dressed like women) for some gender-bending, heart-warming, campy hilarity. What does family mean when you take the being-related part away? What's it like to be a drag queen? How do these ginormous guys become women? What's the most important part of your grooming arsenal as a drag performer? What if a person that was born a woman wants to be drag queen? Trannyshack's The Golden Girls: The Christmas Episodes 2012 is playing December 6th to the 30th at the Victoria Theater at Mission and 16th Streets. If your family thinks you're a freak, with whom do you spend your Christmas (and isn't it maybe better anyway to spend Xmas with people who love and accept you unconditionally)?

He quickly fell for the harder side of dance music and became a regular at underground raves held in the Arizona desert. In the summer of 2000, he moved to San Francisco and was transformed by the diverse local dance scene, which includes parties like Universe, Pleasuredome, Mass, Fag Fridays, and Trannyshack. After a year of immersing himself in San Francisco's vibrant nightlife Steve bought a pair of Technics turntables off of Craigslist and began crafting his own unique sound that incorporates elements of vocal, disco, tribal, and progressive house with occasional forays into techno and trance. A decade later he finds himself bringing his signature sound to a diverse set of parties around the globe. Recent appearances include REAL BAD XXIII, Tonker London, Industry, Disco Cherry, PLAY T-Dance, Los Angeles Pride, REACH Pride T-Dance, and Gus Presents.
