Happy Monday or maybe not. If it's bitterly cold, snowing or iced-over where you're at never fear as Party Favorz is here to put a little sunshine in your day with Hi-NRG Gay Anthems volume 3! This set pulls from both decades with a few caveats. The late Viola Wills who got started in the clubs in the early 80's with hits like "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" and "If You Could Read My Mind" (a remake of the Gordon Lightfoot #1 early 70's classic) is featured here with her rendition of the 1930's torch classic "Stormy Weather" turning it into a hi-energy floor stomper that pulled all the gay boys to the floor. As for "If You Could Read My Mind," the dance version initially brought to life for the dance floor by Viola was re-worked by Amber, Jocelyn Enriquez, and Ultra Naté aka Stars On 54 and produced by Hex Hector for the movie Studio 54. I used the version by the fabulous Soraya Vivian who under the Fierce Angel imprint has created some fantastic classic remakes with her soaring vocals. Nicki French took over for Bonnie Tyler with her rendition of "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which was a massive dance hit in the early 90's and given the Almighty treatment. Equally, Martha Wash re-sung "It's Raining Me" sans the late Izora Rhodes. Frankly, there are a plethora of 80's classics in this set that should be instantly recognizable even to the average listener. However, one song that I have to mention is the feminist anthem "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene, which was oddly written by two men (go figure). Charlene was the only white artist signed to Motown Records, and the song was initially released in 1977 and 1978 barely cracking the Top 100. It was re-released again in 1982 where it topped at #3 on the charts for several weeks and was the only hit Charlene had recorded but had a lasting impact. The cheesy song gained popularity again when it was included in the 1994 movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and has been a drag queen favorite ever since. Charlene re-sung the vocals but used the altered lyrical section of the song (I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that cost too much to be free) for the dance version. The truth is, I could go on and on about the origins of various songs and the singers behind them, but my guess is you want to get to the music. In the end, it's all about the memories and lots of fun! I'll be back on Wednesday to close out this series with volume 4. Until then...ENJOY! Before I forget, I want to give a HUGE shoutout to Anthony S. and Paul S. for their generous donations. The only thing I ask is not to let the well run dry before I decide to renew my host in April for another year. If I do, that's when I'm going to need the money. Nevertheless, this is going to help me dig up some rare treasures for the (as of now) planned significant Madonna celebration multi-series collection I have on tap for August. If I make it that far, this will be the most comprehensive and worthwhile series I've ever put out for any artist that will be cherished for decades to come. Full stop! Album: Hi-NRG Gay Anthems volume 3 Genre: Hi-NRG, Dance, Gay Anthems Year: 2019 Total Time: 02:27:01 1. Nicki French - Total Eclipse Of The Heart (Almighty Mix) 2. Party Favorz is delivering volume 2 of Hi-NRG Gay Anthems where I step up the beats and deliver the fun! I've taken some liberty in the track selection like "Touch Me In the Morning" by Diana Ross was reworked in the early millennium but was originally re-recorded in 1985 by Lydia Steinman. "Your Song" by Elton John (which closes this set out) was never re-recorded (to my knowledge) but re-done by Almighty with Elton re-singing the vocals in the early millennium as well. The same goes with Olivia Newton-John's "I Honestly Love You." Regardless, these tracks fit in nicely with the overall theme and feel of these sets as if they were true to the period. The intro to this set was the hardest thing I've encountered so far. Using the original version of Divine's "Shoot Your Shot" and mashing with Male 2 Male's "Male Stripper" wasn't working so I had to drop it into another software to get it to pan out. If the beats seem slightly off, it's because the original mixes are not up to par with today's technology. Regardless, I thought it came out well. I'm guessing there are about two more of these sets, which I'll post later this next week. That should be followed by a couple of Diva Hall of Fame re-entries that need to be refreshed before getting back into new Dance-Club, Circuit Tribal House, Funky House, and Underground House set later this month. Until then...ENJOY! Album: Hi-NRG Gay Anthems volume 2Genre: Hi-NRG, Dance, Gay AnthemsYear: 2019Total Time: 01:56:03 1. Divine - Shoot Your Shot (XL Ultratraxx Maxi Mix) 2. Party Favorz is back with a multi-volume set of Hi-NRG gay anthems from the 80s and 90s that have been reinvigorated for today's dance floors. The original concept was to create a Hi-NRG compilation of dance tracks from the 1980s. After pouring through most of them, I concluded that a lot of these just didn't meet the requirements for today's music delivery methods (i.e., the sound quality was thin). Sure they sounded great on the dancefloor back in the day, but I just wasn't feeling it. Not to mention, the amount of work involved in trying to bring these up to speed was not a task I was up to at the moment. Fortunately, the much beloved Almighty Records has taken a good chunk of these classics and reworked them for our modern-day listening apparatus. Combine that with 7th Heaven, Soulshaker, Bassmonkeys, and Wideboys amongst many others and this entire set started pulling together nicely. I did have to extend the track selection to the 1990s as well to make it work but what the hell...why not? It just adds to the overall fun of these sets. Yes, I could have waited until June to release these but the future of Party Favorz is uncertain, so why wait? Additionally, there is some crossover from previous efforts but that wasn't preventable if I truly wanted to represent the genre. Besides, there is a slew of gems that have never made it onto any of my previous compilations, so I think it'll be worth it. So get ready to pump, pump, PUMP IT UP! It's been a long time coming but I've finally got around to inducting the dynamic and vocally gifted Martha Wash into the Diva Hall of Fame. With her drama-filled soprano, Martha came to fame in the late 70s as part of the duo Two Tons O' Fun. Along with Izora Armstead, the ladies were the backup singers for the other "Queen of Disco" Sylvester. In 1982, the duo's name changed to The Weather Girls and they went on to record the biggest song of their career "It's Raining Men," a song passed over by Barbara Streisand for her "Wet" album. To this day, the early 80s disco song is considered iconic and a classic by all standards. After the duo split in 1985, Martha transitioned into house music and lent her voice to several massive hits by Black Box and C+C Music Factory. As a solo artist, she continued to rack up several more #1 Billboard club hits like "Give It to You" and "Catch the Light." She continues to perform today and has had more recent #1 club hits (Keep Your Body Working, I'm Not Coming Down) performing with legendary DJ Tony Moran, the latter taken from her recent solo album "Something Good." Martha is a legend, an icon. an ally of the gay community, and a true goddess with an amazing voice. It's for these reasons and more that Party Favorz honors Miss Martha Wash by inducting her into the Diva Hall of Fame. For these reasons and more, Party Favorz honors Miss Martha Wash by inducting her into the Diva Hall of Fame. PLAYPOD 12.01 DJ Steve Sherwood (SFO) T-Dance Ministry ----- DJ Steve Sherwood Website: http://www.djstevesherwood.com/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/djstevesherwood SoundCloud: http://djstevensherwood.podomatic.com/ DJ Steve Sherwood first began listening to electronic music in the late 90's when his younger sister unknowingly left a cassette tape with a live set by Carl Cox on the floor of his car. He quickly fell for the harder side of dance music and became a regular at underground raves held in the Arizona desert. In the summer of 2000, he moved to San Francisco and was transformed by the diverse local dance scene, which includes parties like Universe, Pleasuredome, Mass, Fag Fridays, and Trannyshack. After a year of immersing himself in San Francisco's vibrant nightlife Steve bought a pair of Technics turntables off of Craigslist and began crafting his own unique sound that incorporates elements of vocal, disco, tribal, and progressive house with occasional forays into techno and trance. A decade later he finds himself bringing his signature sound to a diverse set of parties around the globe. Recent appearances include REAL BAD XXIII, Tonker London, Industry, Disco Cherry, PLAY T-Dance, Los Angeles Pride, REACH Pride T-Dance, and Gus Presents. Sherwood is also a resident DJ with Bearracuda in San Francisco and has travelled with the party to Vancouver, Los Angeles, and Austin. ----- Track Listings: 01. Kicking off this set is Mariah's third release from her “Memoires of an Imperfect Angel” album. What's notable here is Jump Smokers have gone back and re-worked the entire album for a near future release and what a job they did! I admit, I wasn't all that happy with the album, but I think pumping some fresh blood into it may be it's saving grace. With the exception of Agnes' “On & On” the first half of this set delves deeply into some seriously smoking hip-hop via the electro route. Folks, this is what I've been talking about. The saving grace for hip-hop is going to be electro. While all of these are stellar tracks that'll get you jumpin' Bassmonkeys and Soulshaker serve up a really funky number on “Bad 4 My Health.” With two separate memorable taglines (Don't blame me if I think with my hoo hoo) and (just call me and I'll be there in a second) this song delivers the goods and then some. The other is “Now You See It” by Honorebel with Pitbull, which has been blowing up all over dance floors. The second half moves in a more mainstream direction starting with Keri Hilson's latest “Slow Dance.” Kaskade really works this number out with a throbbing immediate electro bassline. Another personal favorite is the latest by Dragonette. “Pick Up the Phone” may slow it down it bit, but it's catchy as hell and is the type of song that relentlessly sticks in your brain. Closing out this set we've got some reloaded classics. ATB's “9PM (Til I Come) is a sure fire floor filler and Everything But the Girl's “Missing” is taken to new heights. Picking up where Todd Terry left off, DJ DLG adds some thick bass stabs, while retaining the integrity of the original of this late 90s classic. Perhaps the oddest number in the bunch is the closing track “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. This is the original 60s classic given an electro makeover by Rachel Ellektra that surprisingly works very well. As a reminder, this set and its companion to be released on Thursday are part of a trial I'm running to help cover my costs associated with this site. When you click on the “donate” button you will be taken to PayPal where you can make your contribution of $2.99. Once completed, you will receive a separate email with download instructions. It will also have an email address to contact me should something go wrong and I can then reset the link for you. I hope everyone's having a great week. I'll be posting Take 3 of this set on Thursday and have already started in on the "Winter Edition” which is coming up short on new material. Hopefully, some new tunes will start showing up this week, otherwise, it will be my first single set in a long time. I'll be back in a couple of days. Until then, enjoy! Recently, I was criticized for using a title to my blog that has long been associated with drug use. What these individuals do not know is the story behind "Party Favorz" which was coined by friends upon my arrival at after-hours parties in South Texas where I grew up. Since I was a kid, I was always the one looked to, to provide the entertainment at parties. My love for all music continued into my adult life with a preference for house music, disco and all other forms of dance music. When I would show up at these after-hours parties, I was always asked if I brought any "party favors" with me. That reference was to cool dance music that would be played in the background at these late-night gatherings. The name stuck and that's what I have been calling my mixes since 1999. To lessen the confusion, I even have a 'description' of this site in the left-hand column that always seems to get lost on the haters or at the very least ignored: Party Favorz is a series of mainstream/circuit club mixes that I started making for friends in 1999. Over the years, the mixes evolved into my own special blend of electro-pop and happy house. In 2007, at the urging of friends, I decided to take everything online and the Party Favorz blog was born. Whether you're gay, straight, black, white, pink or purple, Party Favorz knows no boundaries and everyone IS welcome here. Comments and suggestions are always appreciated; in fact they are encouraged. Regardless of the play on words, Party Favorz does not promote nor endorse the use of drugs. Frankly, house music is the only drug your body needs to have a good time. Live, Work, Play and Dance...just do it responsibly. Now on to the music! Additionally, my followers have also been criticized for being uneducated "party boys" who lived for the circuit and drug use. That could be further from the truth. While I don't personally know everyone that follows this site, many of them are professionals from doctors, nurses, lawyers, graphic designers, trainers, and educators. To make a generalized statement about people who like to go out on weekends, dance, unwind and just have fun is a misnomer. They are everyday people from all walks of life who are able to balance their professional lives with their private lives. Whatever happens after the leopard spots from the disco ball fades, is no one's business but theirs. For all the haters, I suggest you worry about cleaning your own backyard before worrying about your neighbors. -Dedicated to a couple of asswipes from San Francisco As we move through this series, you might notice a large amount of these songs have been re-worked by a production group called "Almighty" a record label out of the UK, which consists of DJ Andy Almighty, who is also a part of the production teams "7th Heaven" and "Club Junkies." He also works closely with some of the dance industry's biggest talents like "Soulshaker" and "Bassmonkeys" and a slew of other big-name producers like "Cahill" "Stonebridge" "Soul Seekerz" "Jason Nevins" "Moto Blanco" and "Wideboys"; many of whose works are prominently featured throughout these four sets. DJ Andy Almighty's bio on his MySpace Page states that he is a "DJ/club promoter, producer/remixer, dance music industry guru and gay scene legend!" I would take it a step further and suggest he is a gay icon, right up there with Madonna. 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of Almighty Records, a feat that's practically unheard of in the dance music industry. They are celebrating this marked occasion with their "Essentials" collection which debuts one new release each month. The gay community is blessed with the great efforts of DJ Andy Almighty and his organization for breathing life into these timeless classics and opening them up to an entirely new generation of club-goers. For that, we are most humbled and entirely in your indebtedness for making our lives that much richer.
Latest release for this month is a high energy mix of vocal house. This is a little different than the normal mixes I do, say a little more devilish but still has the funky vibe on it. We start off with a legend who is probably the number one leading disco vocalist ever - Loleatta Holloway providing us with the classic stand up. Production duo Live Element have reworked the classic vocal scats and song of this dance floor gem into a driving peak hour anthem which you can find on Gossip Records. Other tracks to look out for are Grade A Bitch by Jacques Bauer with Chris Kaeser providing the remix and my favourite of the lot Need To Feel Loved by Reflekt with eSQUIRE providing us with this remix. I want to welcome everyone to the final House Edition of the summer. Don't expect another Beach House mix 'cause that ain't what's being served up. Instead, I purposely took this mix in a more uplifting direction full of fun disco house music. Granted, there's definitely a lot of soul to boot, but it is the 'fun' aspect I was focusing on. Besides, summer will end soon and I wanted to leave on a feel-good note. I hope all the disruptions this weekend didn't kill my vibe, but I think I really delivered on this one; not just on song choice but mixing as well. I'll be back tomorrow or the day after with Take 2 of this mix. Until then...ENJOY! If you enjoy this podcast: 1. Leave me a comment at the end of this post. That's one of the ways I gauge what people are feeling and it ensures I'll continue making this type of mix in the future 2. Don't keep this site your little secret, tell your FRIENDS so we can keep this community strong. 3. Donate via PayPal to help keep Party Favorz going. I can assure you that all donations received goes right back into this site to help cover the costs associated with hosting and the purchase of new music; even a couple of bucks/euros goes a long way. Album : House Edition v4 Genre : Disco, Funky, House, Soulful Year : 2008 Total Time : 1:19:55:00 Track : 1 Title : It's Yours (Joey Negro Remix) Artist : Jon Cutler feat. E-Man With a ton of support from a variety of DJs, this is destined to be a late summer smash. Of course, I'm always partial to Joey and he certainly did not fail to deliver. Essential Track : 2 Title : Love Me (Sergio D'Angelo Remix) Artist : Steve Paradise feat. Kiara S The vocals on this song alone are worth the price of admission alone. Amazing song, even better vocals and a stellar remix by Sergio; this is the full meal deal. What a package! Essential. Track : 3 Title : I Love America (DJ Meme Main Club Mix) Artist : Hanna Hais I for one would have never thought about doing a remix of the Patrick Juvet disco club hit from 1979. I had to go back and dig out my Casablanca Records box set to refresh my memory. After listening to both, I gotta say DJ Meme was definitely the guy for the job. I've really been digging his work lately and this mix does not fail to disappoint. Essential. Track : 4 Title : Gotta Have House (Do You Remember) (Knee Deep Anthem Mix) Artist : Knee Deep & DJ Spen feat. Biblical Jones Yet another song about 'house music'. Nevertheless, Knee Deep live up to their name and really punch the groove out in their mix, making this an obvious choice for a night out in Ibiza. Track : 5 Title : Show Me How Good (Arduini-Pagany Philly Vocal Mix) Artist : Arduini & Pagany feat. Vale Ducros Ahh, picture yourself under the disco lights getting all caught up in the swirling strings. This feel-good number is instantly catchy and definitely memorable. Essential. Track : 6 Title : Down (Vocal Club Mix) Artist : Freak 'n' Funky Boogie Oogie Oogie...need I say more? Essential. Track : 7 Title : Where Love Lives 2008 (Soulshaker Remix) Artist : Alison Limerick Earlier this summer, I previewed an amazing electro version and now we have the Soulshaker remix. Well, we all know that Soulshaker has definitely been on a roll lately and this song just continues that pattern with their take on this early 90's classic. Essential. Track : 8 Title : Underlying Feeling (Soulshaker Remix) Artist : Sylvia Tosun After failing to really make a dent with her amazing "Head Over Heels" track back in early December, Sylvia is back with her follow-up. Folks, this is an ultra-catchy tune with a couple outstanding remixes to suit everyone. Now if this doesn't hit, then something is just ain't right in clubland. Essential. Track : 9 Title : Falling (Earnshaw's Vocal Re-Touch) Artist : Soulmakers Not an instantly gotcha song like its predecessors in this mix, but once you get into it, you'll be feeling the groove too.
