He tells them that he wasn't the person to end the life of Bartholomew, but it was Tonga, the pigmy. Holmes says that he believes him, but that he will need to provide a full honest account of the Agra Treasure, and how he came to England, and how he came into Bartholomew's room. Small agrees, but curses the treasure, saying that it brings nothing but misery to those who possess it. Watson is dropped off at Vauxhall bridge with the Agra Treasure, and with a police guard, heads to Miss Morstan's home. She is happy to see Watson, but seems a little upset and aloof when receiving the treasure. Watson is likewise unhappy, and over does his excited performance when handing the chest over. He tells her about the boat chase, and she seems terrified at the danger she put Watson and Holmes into. Watson proceeds to open the chest, and when he lifts the lid, they find the crate empty. Watson lets out a "Thank God" and confesses his love to miss Morstan saying that the treasure would have separated them. She reciprocates his love. Rules on electric vehicle sales could be changing, but as Vauxhall announces the closure of its Luton plant, Will Bain asks will it be enough to save UK car manufacturing? We've had more details on the government's plan to get more young people into work or training - we hear from one jobseeker about the difficulties of finding work. And find out why people are starting to use artificial intelligence to shop for Christmas presents.
Electric cars are killing jobs right across the Globe. The rush to go all electric is insane, it will kill jobs but also kill communities. Luton is stopping making electric cars and 1200 jobs are at risk. I broadcast a radio show on BBC local radio back in 2000 when Vauxhall tried to close down the whole factory and it is an event that helped make my career. The old cliche that bad news sells was pretty accurate in my case. The closure and my broadcast helped to unite the community and I tell you the tale of how we pulled it of in this podcast. I am immensely proud of this work which went on to win three Sony Awards (Radio Oscars) as it was a real team effort but not just the team at the radio station but the whole community of Luton. Please watch or listen and see how communities can be united. I also think its pretty funny and very indiscreet in how we did it. Please support me here www.buymeacoffee.com/jongaunt

As England and Wales look to pass a similar bill, we speak to a Canadian doctor about her concerns that vulnerable people are at risk and a retired senator who wants the laws to extend even further to those with mental health issues. We want to hear from you! US President Joe Biden has announced a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah. The truce will kick in overnight and is scheduled to last for sixty days. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government would “respond forcefully to any violation” of the deal.In the UK, the owner of Vauxhall has announced the closure of its van-making factory in Luton, putting 1,100 jobs at risk. Stellantis cited UK laws to impose a transition to electric vehicles as part of the reason. The government says it will consult on “flexibilities” to those rules. And the Macquarie Dictionary has a new word of the year. The dictionary's committee describes the word as: “A very basic Anglo-Saxon term wrapped in affixes which elevate it to being almost formal; almost respectable”.

The podcast starts with Tu and Lei's thoughts on the XPeng's Mona M03 and the aggressive pricing that was announced for the vehicle. This evolves into a recap of XPeng history on product launches and the hope that this launch can be more successful than their past ones. Tu mentions that there are bad takes out there and emphasizes that price doesn't automatically dictate the segment in China anymore since the Chinese EV makers are offering tremendous value during this price war.The two switch topics over to the Chengdu Motor show and give a brief history lesson on the Chinese auto show hierarchy and what they expect from Chengdu. This discussion moves onto Tesla news about offering a 7-seat Model Y for China and their current promotions that have allowed them to keep production high in China. Lei mentions Tu's LinkedIn post that got a bit of attention referring to BYD's forecast of 50% of sales in the future will be ex-China. They then discuss the possibillity of and the scenarios that would help them achieve that goal. The podcast ends with a discussion on the recently announced Vauxhall Frontera EV being offered in the UK for £24K ($28K) and why other legacy automakers aren't able to get to that price.
Join us for a great chat with Sheridan from We Blog Any Car for a trip down memory lane. It starts with his Dad's Vauxhall Viva in bright metallic green (with the obligatory vinyl roof), and in juxtaposition, his colleagues and customers Audi 100s with their 5 cylinder engines. His Dad didn't drive fast (whilst listening to country music or Boney-M on his Pioneer radio cassette with electric aerial) but he was fond of a wheelspin in the wet, and once tried to race a Mazda RX7... After the Viva came a brown Mk2 Cavalier saloon, which he later 'facelifted' with parts from work. A bit like the 'One bit at a time' song by Jonny Cash. Much to our joy, the Citroen BX comes up in discussion, belonging to a teacher at school. Likewise a Mk1 Golf GTI with which the keys were trusted to Sheridan to go and retrieve things by his teacher, should any school stuff be left inside during lessons. Talk then changes to suggestions for classic cars and investment cars of the future. The Mk1 Audi TT is Andy's choice, Sheridan albeit with bias is backing the Alfa GTV and Spyder of the late nineties. We discuss what cars need to have or not have to make the cut, and we feel part of this is a lack of availability, perhaps having fallen out of favour or been a bit rubbish when first available. The MG ZR or the Proton Satria GTI might just make the mark. You probably know Vauxhall and their German cousin Opel as the makers of reasonably prices cars that maybe aren't that exciting. But in the 60s and 70s Vauxhall produced several amazing sports car and supercar concepts that rivalled the best Lamborghini had to offer. And Vauxhall didn't just make concepts, there was the VX220 – a car that was a lot of fun with great handling. But why didn't these 60s cars or the last concept ever make it to production?
Jonny has an idea for making motorsport more interesting. Also in this episode, Mediterranean-style scooter dismounts, shorts the colour of an ‘80s Vauxhall, Cornish car spotting, a camping chair disaster, a listener's amazing tale of a Celica-driving teacher, another listener's narrow lane encounter with TV royalty, Bristol Airport tricky landing info, autocorrect car names, Recaro in trouble, and ‘60s man goes canoeing. So far, I'm about eighty podcasts in.If someone tells me they listen, they usually follow up with ‘that Frank Lowe one's great' (or ‘sick', depending on their age).I always ask why, but never get a clear answer. They just like it.It was enjoyable to record too, but I left wondering whyhe'd barely mentioned Lowe Howard-Spink.As if he'd only ever worked at CDP.Which was a shame, CDP had been amazing, but they weren't my era.Lowe's was.By the time I'd snuck into advertising the cool agencies were the new ones – GGT, BBH, AMV and the agency that carried Frank's name.Year after year, they won big awards for big clients.Stella Artois, Vauxhall, Tesco, Heineken, I could go on.So I will – Lloyds Bank, Reebok, Weetabix, Gordons Gin, Parker Pens, The Mail On Sunday, Condor, Castella, Tizer, Ovaltine, KP, The Hanson Trust, Birds Eye, Smirnoff, Coca-Cola – they were huge. And all of those clients won awards. And, unlike CDP, they started opening or acquiring offices across the globe. But it wasn't always this way.In 1981, only months after opening their doors, they were in turmoil.Totally dysfunctional.Having swiped a big chunk of CDP's senior talent, they didn't have a plan or structure of how to use them.Who over-saw who?Did anybody over-see anybody?Who was Creative Director?Dave Horry? Alan Waldie? John O'Driscoll? John Kelley? Alfredo Marcantonio? Or the recently added former CDP superstar Geoff Seymour? They found that too many creative leaders meant they had no creative leader.Six months in, Horry, O'Driscoll and Kelley walk.On the way out the door, they advise Frank that he needed a Creative Director and it should be the least-known and youngest of the breakaways – Alfredo Marcantonio.Suddenly, things started to work.We talk about why and the rest of Marc's career, hope you enjoy it.

Hey Everybody, 2000 to 2010 was a great decade. I hit that milestone of 40yrs half way through & for me, the deep house / underground house scene was at its zenith during that period. I spent the 80's in disco's called things like, The Roxy. I spent the 90's mostly in fields or disused aircraft hangers, but the 00's, with de-restriction on opening & licensing hours, was what bought underground clubbing to the masses. When I wasn't playing out, I was on a lot of guest lists so my core group & I did a lot of clubbing. We also did our best to consume as many pharmaceuticals as possible & sleep was something of an illusion for most weekends. Our gang had a mostly similar musical taste, though all preferred their house a little more generic than I would've chosen. So we'd maybe start off smart & sweet smelling at Pacha, then head down to Turnmills to get our sweat on to a little tougher. 6am saw us kicked out, but you could just rejoin the queue & go back in for Trade, a gay night that toughened things up a little more & ran through till lunchtime. A quick cab home to shower & change, then it was off to Vauxhall for Fire. Another gay gig that negated our change of clothes as everyone in the place was stripped to their waists & throbbing along to the soundtrack. So it came that eventually we would make it back to my mates place to settle in for the comedown. Of course, by this time I was desperate to hear “my music”, either to shuffle-dance along with myself, or to sink into the luxurious carpet & contemplate the complexities of existential dichotomies whilst transported to far away places by soulful beats over a booming bassline. Naturally, or rather chemically, I was in no condition to dj for myself, so I put together a couple of premixed CD's of the deep & soulful kind. Those two CD's hit 18yrs & 20yrs this summer, so by way of a celebration, this mix is an amalgamation of them both & a loving tribute to the amazing hours I spent on carpets in Putney & the people that shared them with me, all coming together for a track-list that went like this..... China produces more than half the world's electric vehicles and is scaling up exports, but there are concerns its manufacturers would have an unfair advantage in the UK, which could spell disaster for domestic firms.Evan Davis and guests discuss the UK's dilemma around Chinese EVs - do we open our doors to the competition, which might mean cheaper electric cars for consumers and a quicker transition to net zero, or should the government follow the USA and EU in considering import restrictions to protect domestic car-makers?Plus, do buyers really care where their EV is made, and will 100% of new car sales be electric by 2035?Evan is joined by:Ginny Buckley, editor-in-chief and founder, electrifying.com; Victor Zhang, UK country director of Omoda and Jaecoo (made by Chery); James Taylor, UK managing director, Vauxhall; Fraser Brown, managing director, MotorVisePRODUCTION TEAM:Producer: Simon Tulett Researcher: Drew Hyndman Editor: Matt Willis Sound: Neil Churchill Production co-ordinator: Rosie Strawbridge
In 1990 Vauxhall was on top of the world. Ford's serious misstep with the Sierra in the early 1980s, meant Vauxhall's well put together Cavalier had cleaned up. The third generation Cavalier had continued those inroads in the late 80s, along with the excellent Astra and Nova that completed their mass car lineup. So, surely the next generation car, the Vectra, would do just as well? I'm sure you can tell from the build-up, that that didn't happen, but why?
