Selling In The Motor Trade
96 Chinese Car Brands Coming. Eden's CEO on How to Decide Which Ones Are Worth Your Time

Selling In The Motor Trade

The UK has made itself the most attractive market in Europe for Chinese car manufacturers, and most dealers have not fully thought through what that means yet. Graeme, CEO of Eden Motor Group, has. He has been in the trade for over 40 years and built a multi-franchise group across Vauxhall, MG, Leap Motor, Mazda, Hyundai and Peugeot. He is direct about the dynamic: aggressive BEV targets and a relatively open import policy are pulling manufacturers toward the UK in a way that France and Germany, with their fiscal management and tariffs, simply are not seeing. That matters for anyone trying to decide which Chinese brands to take on, which to leave alone, and whether the ones arriving now will still be here in five years. This episode is worth your time before you make that call. What's covered: • Why UK BEV mandates are creating a different competitive landscape to the rest of Europe, and what that means for dealer margins  • The specific reasons Eden backed MG and Leap Motor, and what made those two decisions straightforward when others were not  • How Eden's early Vauxhall joint venture worked, including the golden share, the accounting rules and the buyout strategy  • The workwear question: what Eden's exec committee decided after consulting front-of-house colleagues, and why it still divides opinion  • Why Graeme talks to every waiting customer before his morning management meeting, and what he heard this week  • The deliberate decision not to grow Eden beyond a certain size, even when the funding and the franchise opportunities were both available  • What keeps a 40-year industry veteran fully engaged: the honest version, not the polished one Graeme is CEO of Eden Motor Group, a UK franchise group representing Vauxhall, MG, Leap Motor, Mazda, Hyundai and Peugeot. He built the business from a single Vauxhall joint venture, chose quality over scale at every growth stage, and now advises the IMI, a French motor retail business and an American investment bank alongside his full-time CEO role. He has been doing this for over 40 years and still walks the service reception floor before his meetings start. If you are a dealer principal or franchise director trying to make sense of the Chinese brand wave before it makes the decisions for you, this is the episode to start with. This week, I sat down with Lord Walker, Executive Chair of Iceland Food Group, Founder and Chairman of Bywater, and the Prime Minister's Cost of Living Champion. Richard started his property career on the JLL graduate scheme in the West End before moving to Warsaw to build a value-add business across Eastern Europe. After returning to the UK, Bywater spent several years searching for its niche before the former Costa Roastery site in Lambeth became Paradise - one of the UK's largest CLT mass timber office buildings. That project helped bring in Sumitomo Forestry, a 400-year-old Japanese partner, and gave Bywater the platform to scale into timber-led workspaces and living assets. In this conversation, Richard talks about patient capital, building through the GFC, why "long term greedy" shapes both Bywater and Iceland, how purpose and profit can sit together, and what his new role in the House of Lords means for his work around the cost of living. We also discuss Iceland's growth into a £4.5bn family-owned retailer, his year working on the shop floor, climbing Everest in 2023, and why resilience has been central to every stage of his career. ⸻ Key Topics Covered in This Episode ✅ From The West End To Warsaw Lessons from the JLL grad scheme and building in Eastern Europe through the GFC. ✅ Paradise, Vauxhall & The Mass Timber Thesis How the CLT office in Vauxhall became the deal that defined Bywater. ✅ Sumitomo And The Power Of Patient Capital Why a 400-year-old Japanese partner is rewriting how Bywater thinks about cycles and product. ✅ Scaling Beyond Offices £1 billion GDV by year end, a new pension-fund vehicle, and the move into living. ✅ Long Term Greedy Why purpose-led businesses last longer and why Gen Z is voting with their feet. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded

Boz Boorer talks about his life in music, from his earliest memories of Marc Bolan and T. Rex to punk shows in London in the late 70s, The Polecats, and eventually decades on the road and in the studio with Morrissey. Boz talks about touring with Dave Edmunds, working alongside Tony Visconti, Mick Ronson and Steve Lillywhite, and the stories behind some of Morrissey’s most beloved songs: ‘Jack The Ripper’, ‘Speedway’, ‘Scandinavia’, ‘Istanbul’ and ‘I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris’ among them. He gets into the making of Your Arsenal and Vauxhall and I, the stage invasions on those early tours, and why recording a chainsaw made perfect sense for ‘Speedway’. There’s also his recent collaborations with Paul Roland and Andy Ellison, digging through old archive tapes, and life running a record shop in Portugal. Dearest gentle Polin, we have been apart for far two long. As we celebrate the second anniversary of the imperfect season of our hearts, it's time to head back home to the drawing-room window with a view of the house across the street. In our special Polin Q&A, we'll be looking back over two years of blow-away balloons, cheek strokes and the best first kiss Veg has ever seen before making room on the chaise for our favourite redhead and a green-eyed imposter. After a spot of tea with Book Polin, we'll be grabbing our devilishly yellow headcoverings and taking a promenade through Polin's past, from the very first Vauxhall jig through to a final retirement sway. Once we've picked Penelope up from the pavement and the 408 dance off the cutting room floor, we'll also find time to reminisce over crumbs, blurs and our very own histories of connection. Why Retail Down Wins: The Former Voice of CAP on How Dealers Should Be Valuing Stock

Selling In The Motor Trade

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2026 34:19

Most dealers are still valuing used cars the way they did ten years ago. Buy it at auction, add a margin, put it on the forecourt and hope the price holds. That approach does not work in a market where Chinese brands have no residual history, EV prices have swung dramatically, and live data can tell you within minutes what a car will actually sell for in your postcode. Derren Martin spent years as one of the key voices at CAP and now consults for Cazana, a retail-down pricing platform that gives dealers a transparent look at what comparable stock is doing in their area right now. This episode is for the used car manager who wants to know exactly how to value stock in 2025, not how it was done in 2015. What's covered: • The donor vehicle method for valuing Chinese EV brands that have no UK pricing history to work from • Why retail down beats trade up, and why relying on what you paid at auction first is the old way of doing it • What Cazana surfaces that CAP and Autotrader do not, including full vehicle history and MOT advisories • Why used EVs still sell at the right price and why the dealers avoiding them entirely are taking the bigger risk • The 30 to 40 day speed-to-sell benchmark, and the signals that tell you it is time to adjust • Why a used EV always has a floor value, because the battery pack holds secondary-use worth even at end of life • How Chinese brands are reshaping dealer footprints and what a mixed stock strategy looks like in this market • Where AI is already being used in valuations and the limits it still runs into with low-volume or new-to-market     vehicles Derren Martin was the voice of CAP's used car valuation operation for a number of years, working with dealers, leasing companies and OEMs across the UK market. He now consults for Cazana, which was rebuilt after Cazoo collapsed and is competing with CAP and Autotrader on both data depth and price. If you are a used car manager trying to stay ahead of EV pricing shifts and the Chinese brand wave, this is the episode to put on. Darren Martin spent 12 years at CAP HPI, eventually directing the full valuations and forecasts operation across all vehicle types. Before that, 17 years at Vauxhall across fleet, van sales and residual value management. He now consults independently through Black and Gold Consulting, with clients including Chinese brands, legacy OEMs and large retail groups. If you are responsible for used car buying, stock policy or forecasting in any form, Darren's view on where the market is heading is the kind of context that is hard to get anywhere else. About Symco Training: Symco Training was founded in 2000 by Simon Bowkett and it was his belief that the business had to offer its clients something different. That difference was clear to Simon from his days in the dealership when he experienced many sales trainers who had all the answers, but were unable, unwilling or both to actually show the delegate how they could be implemented. There is a number that should get every used car manager's attention. The OMODA J5 7 was the biggest selling car in March. The deal was around £299 down, £299 a month. That is an extraordinary amount of car for that payment, and it is working. The problem is that car becomes a used car in three years, and the used car market for Chinese brands does not really exist yet. Darren Martin ran the entire forecast and valuation portfolio at CAP HPI for several years. He knows better than most what happens when new car volumes are not matched by a credible used car strategy. He is not predicting disaster. But he is clear that the residual value risk is already being built in, and most people in the trade are not thinking about it yet. What's covered: • How CAP HPI valuations are built and why human editors, not algorithms, are still making the calls  • Why Chinese brands have grown at a speed the legacy manufacturers genuinely did not expect  • What happens to residual values when PCP deals are driven by interest rates rather than real demand  • The channel management decisions, daily rental, Motability, fleet, that either protect or destroy used car values  • Why Stellantis carrying too many brands in the same market segment is a long-term structural problem  • Which smaller Japanese brands face the biggest risk of losing UK relevance  • What a dealer should be doing right now to think ahead on used Chinese brand stock  • Darren's prostate cancer diagnosis at 48, how a locum nearly turned him away, and why men in the trade should       ask for the test rather than wait Darren Martin spent 12 years at CAP HPI, eventually directing the full valuations and forecasts operation across all vehicle types. It also has a network of authorised repairers and approved used centres.   In our wide-ranging interview, Graeme ("I'm unashamedly a retailer") also discusses his approach to OEM representation, taking on emergent brands and driving growth through the business.   And shares how the March plate change performed for the group and why he feels optimistic about trading in Q2 despite global headwinds.   He also provides an update on the Institute of the Motor Industry, which he has been chairing since last June, and industry charity Ben, where he is a board adviser.   Available now on your podcast feed or here   #automotive

He met Louis XVI of France and attended his coronation in June 1775; he was a patron of the London pleasure gardens at Ranelagh in Chelsea and Vauxhall in Kennington. When in his late thirties, Bentley became parsimonious and stopped washing and cleaning himself and his shop. He picked up the nickname Dirty Dick and his shop became known as "the dirty warehouse"; both he and his shop became well known and were lampooned in the press. People visited the outlet to see the squalor, and noted that Bentley was very polite and had impeccable manners. Rumours circulated that the cause of the dirtiness was that Bentley had not washed since his fiancée had died on their wedding eve and that he had locked the dining room, complete with the wedding feast, and left it to moulder.Bentley moved out of his shop in 1804 and the contents were sold off. One enterprising publican purchased some of the contents, including mummified rats and cats, and used them to decorate his pub, which he renamed Dirty Dicks; as at 2025 the pub is still in operation under that name. Bentley died of a fever in 1809 in Haddington, East Lothian in Scotland. Bentley's story was known by the writer Charles Dickens, and Bentley's locked dining room may have inspired the locked room of Miss Havisham in the 1861 novel Great Expectations. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:27 UTC on Wednesday, 1 April 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Dirty Dick on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Stephen.

Few journeys in British food are as dramatic as that of Nathaniel Mortley, better known as Natty Can Cook. In this episode Natty takes us from being a naughty kid in Peckham to becoming one of the most exciting young chefs in the country. He opens up about the night he was stabbed at just sixteen, the trauma and anger that followed, and how those years pushed him toward the streets, knives and choices that spiralled far from the kitchen he once loved.Natty speaks candidly about losing his passion for cooking, getting arrested outside a rave in Vauxhall and receiving a five year prison sentence that could easily have ended his story. Instead, it became the turning point. He takes us inside Belmarsh and Brixton for a brutally honest look at prison life: the violence, the bullying, the humiliating controlled feeds, the strange economy of mackerel currency and the wild creativity of microwave cheffing and the legendary jail cake. His memories of the wing are gripping, raw and impossible to forget. But this episode is also about redemption through food. Inside Brixton's Clink restaurant, Natty rebuilt his confidence, his discipline and his love of cooking while teaching men who had never set foot in a kitchen. He describes the emotional shock of returning to the same prison years later to cook a four course tasting menu for 80 diners and a team of inmates who had no idea he once slept in those cells. It is a full circle moment that hits with incredible force.Today Natty is on the Michelin radar, self funded, uncompromising and creating some of the most exciting Caribbean food in the country. From the chaos of his 200 cover soft launch to the rise of his viral Luxe Roast Challenge, from his pimento duck to his strict dress code and the unbelievable customer stories, this episode is a front row seat to a chef who fought his way back from the edge and is now aiming for history. It is powerful, emotional and completely unmissable. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ballooning became a huge fad starting in the late 18th century, and there was a surprising amount of rioting associated with it. Fervor, excitement, and intoxication in some instances, meant that balloon events were prone to get out of control. Episode SummaryEver wandered through a European parking lot and thought, “Why don't we get cars like that in America?”In this episode of The Straight Shift, The Car Chick, dives into the sleek, smart, and downright sexy European cars that U.S. drivers can't buy — and all the bureaucratic, political, and marketing nonsense that keeps them off our roads. She covers everything from trade wars and tariffs to global platform sharing, brand confusion, and she reveals the legendary naming fail in automotive history.Key TakeawaysEuropean automakers build smaller, more stylish, and more driver-focused cars — and American drivers are missing out on some genuinely great vehicles because of it.The combination of differing safety standards, emissions regulations, and high startup costs makes it difficult for foreign brands to justify entering the U.S. market. The current trade and political environment is unpredictable, which makes expanding into new markets — especially the U.S. — too risky for many automakers.Global platform sharing allows manufacturers to design multiple models on the same architecture, meaning many cars are more closely related than consumers realize.Vehicle naming strategies often change by market due to language, marketing, and cultural factors — though occasionally they lead to some embarrassing translation fails.Resourceswww.TheCarChick.comwww.DrivingInTheUK.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@CarChickTVwww.CupraOfficial.comwww.Vauxhall.co.ukwww.Skoda-auto.comwww.dsautomobiles.comYou can view a full list of resources and episode transcripts here. He tells them that he wasn't the person to end the life of Bartholomew, but it was Tonga, the pigmy. Holmes says that he believes him, but that he will need to provide a full honest account of the Agra Treasure, and how he came to England, and how he came into Bartholomew's room. Small agrees, but curses the treasure, saying that it brings nothing but misery to those who possess it. Watson is dropped off at Vauxhall bridge with the Agra Treasure, and with a police guard, heads to Miss Morstan's home. She is happy to see Watson, but seems a little upset and aloof when receiving the treasure. Watson is likewise unhappy, and over does his excited performance when handing the chest over. He tells her about the boat chase, and she seems terrified at the danger she put Watson and Holmes into. Watson proceeds to open the chest, and when he lifts the lid, they find the crate empty. Watson lets out a "Thank God" and confesses his love to miss Morstan saying that the treasure would have separated them. She reciprocates his love. Electric cars are killing jobs right across the Globe. The rush to go all electric is insane, it will kill jobs but also kill communities. Luton is stopping making electric cars and 1200 jobs are at risk. I broadcast a radio show on BBC local radio back in 2000 when Vauxhall tried to close down the whole factory and it is an event that helped make my career. The old cliche that bad news sells was pretty accurate in my case. The closure and my broadcast helped to unite the community and I tell you the tale of how we pulled it of in this podcast. I am immensely proud of this work which went on to win three Sony Awards (Radio Oscars) as it was a real team effort but not just the team at the radio station but the whole community of Luton. Please watch or listen and see how communities can be united. I also think its pretty funny and very indiscreet in how we did it. Please support me here www.buymeacoffee.com/jongaunt
