Ever busted a money laundering ring with a two-minute hunch? I did—at a bank in 2003—because dyslexia forced me to think differently. I couldn't read growing up, but audiobooks, grit, and a forgotten science called dual coding turned me into a pattern-spotting machine. Now, I've logged thousands of hours with audiobooks —2x, 3x speed—plus gigs of audio and shelves of marked-up books, out-talking PhDs with insight, not just facts. This is my protocol: audio first, text after, speed it up, reread, fight for it. It's how I aced tests, caught crooks, and proved the doubters wrong. Maryanne Wolf says we're losing deep reading—I say we can reclaim it. Want to go from illiterate to unstoppable? Listen up—I'm Almighty Ohm, and this is my edge.

In 19th-century Sweden, Caesaria is kept in a doctor's mansion as a trophy: she is the first baby to be born alive from one of his c-sections. In a Gothic ambience, Caesaria narrates in first person her experiences in the mansion and her encounters with its mysterious inhabitants and visitors. Does she know where she comes from? Where is her mother? Is there a world beyond these walls? We interview Hanna Nordenhök about her Gothic tale, published for the first time in English by Heloise Press on the 24th October 2024. Inspired by a real-life nineteenth-century medical miracle, it explores issues - women's bodies and women's rights - that are vitally contemporary. Our wide-ranging discussion covers some international writers and film-makers whose work listeners might not be familiar with so we thought we would list them here. Authors Ágota Kristóf - 1935 – 2011: Hungarian author The Notebook Trilogy and The Illiterate are available in translation Birgitta Trotzig 1929 – 1935: Swedish author Her work seems currently only available in Swedish or translated into French or Spanish. Fernanda Melchor (b.1982) Mexican: Paradais and Hurricane Season published by Fitzcarraldo Films The Wild Child - Francois Truffaut 1970 The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser Hans Werber Herzog 1974 The Knick - Steven Soderbergh (TV series) 2014-15 Hanna Nordenhök (Malmo, 1977) has been awarded several major literary honors for her work, both as novelist, poet and essayist. Her novel Caesaria (2020) scooped Swedish Radio's Literary Prize and was shortlisted for Vi's Literature Prize. Nordenhök also works as a translator from the Spanish and has been praised for her translations of Fernanda Melchor, Andrea Abreu and Alia Trabucco Zerán. Her last novel Wonderland (2023) was listed among the Best Books of the Year in Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Expressen, Borås Tidning, Hufvudstadsbladet and Magasinet ETC, as well as shortlisted for Vi's Literature Prize. Saskia Vogel is a writer and translator of over two-dozen Swedish-language books. Her novel Permission was published in five languages. She is a recipient the Berlin Senate grant for non- German literature, the Bernard Shaw Prize, two English PEN Translates Awards, and was a PEN America Translation Prize finalist. She was Princeton's Fall 2022 Translator in Residence. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she lives in Berlin. This episode was produced by Martin Nathan. Martin Nathan's short fiction and poetry has appeared in a range of journals and his novel – A Place of Safety is published by Salt Publishing. His dramatic writing has been shortlisted for the Nick Darke award and the Woodward International Prize. University of Canterbury lecturer Mike Grimshaw says students are turning up to university unable to adequately read, write, or think independently.
A university lecturer has fired shots at the education system, claiming the number of tertiary students who are “functionally illiterate” is at crisis level. Associate Professor of Sociology at Canterbury University Mike Grimshaw believes New Zealand is under-educating and over-qualifying. He tells Heather du Plessis-Allanit's a wider societal issue of how we value education, fund it and what we want from the system. New Zealand pumps out around 45,000 tertiary graduates a year. Grimshaw says there is no increase in the societal, cultural and economic outcomes that degrees are said to provide. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is an October 7th story, but one that begins not in 2023, but in October of 1894 with the arrest of French military officer Alfred Dreyfus, who also happened to be a Jew. The implications of his framing, arrest, incarceration and the fallout of his eventual exoneration reverberate today. Over this five-episode series, we examine how these events unfolded, and how they connect to the antisemitism that exists today. In this first episode, we begin with the fraught political climate in France, a secretly gay general, and an illiterate cleaning lady-turned-spy had to do with it all.

Gold prices reach record highs worldwide as most Americans remain unaware of its rising value. The upcoming BRICS summit may further shift the global financial system toward gold.
Today, David Waldman presents today's KITM, and in a respected and well-established Thursday precedent, Greg Dworkin will join him for a portion of the discussion. What a maroon! Illiterate egotistic traitorous dotard Donald Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery with the sole purpose of gaining attention. Mission Accomplished. Trump staff (featuring rehire Corey Lewandowski) are quite accustomed to treating dead soldiers as doormats, as well as the live ones, so how were they to know a simple felony photo-op “thumbs up” among Arlington's freshest graves would garner such negative vibes? Especially once the key witness was silenced. Trump will say it's Biden's fault. Journalists will write down “Biden's fault”, which will be fact-checked as “true”. Our tiny speck of shared reality is being fought over memes, and at the moment they are shooting themselves in the foot. If anything gets shot, RFK Jr. will eat it. Every moment of Donald Trump's life has been a penny-ante flimflam, which you can now pay for in crypto. Meanwhile, the Kamalamentum continues its rise. Jeremy Fryberger's multipart KITM series describes how you can become involved locally, and why you should do so NOW. Today, Jeremy looks at the situation in Minnesota!

This conversation is one of those that is personal and universal. What do you do when your partner dies unexpectedly? What Kim did was delve into that experience and, over time, lean in to help others as they are hit by loss and grief. As she says, “I can be an upbeat, energetic person, and I've had this big loss. The content that I'm talking about is grief, and yet I'm enthusiastic about it, so that might feel weird to people. But I want to be of service and I want this horrible pain to be of use to someone.” Kim talks about her experience and her work, touching on many aspects of grief and loss. https://www.pocketgrief.com/ https://www.facebook.com/PocketGriefHelps https://www.instagram.com/pocketgrief/
After her husband of 19 years died suddenly of Leukemia at the age of 48, Kim Shute experienced first-hand that the death of a young partner “stopped people in their tracks.” Friends and family showed up as best everyone could, but it launched Kim on an unexpected path into working in the field of grief, through leading groups, presenting in her community, and creating a series of Pocket Grief books. One of those booklets, Hints for Grieflings, notes, “Grief is how you see life after loss, like putting on a new pair of glasses.” https://www.pocketgrief.com/ https://www.facebook.com/PocketGriefHelps https://www.instagram.com/pocketgrief/
