Ditch the Suits - Financial, Investment, & Retirement Planning
In episode 188, we dive into the topic of financial literacy, exploring the lessons we wish we'd learned before our first paycheck. The episode unpacks pervasive money myths, the challenges of discussing finances - especially with those closest to us - and the reality behind so-called “smart financial moves.” We also discuss inherited financial habits, generational money mindset clashes, and what it truly means to prepare the next generation for financial success beyond just opening a savings account. Jamie Shelton, a Senior Wealth Manager at S.E.E.D. Planning Group and board president for SEEDs of Hope, joins us to share insights on promoting financial literacy. Key Themes and Takeaways Financial Literacy Defined: We break down what financial literacy means, emphasizing that it's not just about knowing financial terminology but also understanding how to apply that knowledge to your own life. Many people feel financially illiterate because they don't understand the language of finance, and we discuss how learning the terminology is the first step, followed by learning how to use it. Generational Perspectives: The episode highlights how different generations approach money and investing. Travis shares stories about how market events like the 2008 crash shaped investor perspectives, especially for those just starting out. We discuss how wisdom and experience play a crucial role in financial decision-making, and how younger and older generations can learn from each other. Changing Financial Landscape: We talk about how the financial industry is still rooted in its sales origins, with many advisors focused on asset gathering rather than true planning. The industry is evolving, but the shift toward fiduciary responsibility and fee-only advice is still underway. Travis encourages listeners to advocate for themselves and ask tough questions when working with financial professionals. The Value of Wisdom: Wisdom comes from experience, and Travis shares how working with clients over decades has shown him the importance of perspective. High inflation, interest rates, and market volatility are nothing new, and understanding the bigger picture helps younger investors avoid panic and make better decisions. Information Overload and Technology: We discuss how the internet and social media have changed the way people access financial information. While younger generations are adept at sifting through online data, it's important to discern credible sources from misinformation. The speed and fragmentation of information today make it challenging to make informed decisions, highlighting the need for financial literacy and wisdom. Emotional Benefits and Solutions Throughout the episode, Travis emphasizes the emotional benefits of financial literacy—confidence, empowerment, and the ability to make informed decisions. By understanding both the language and the application of financial concepts, listeners can break free from anxiety and confusion, advocate for themselves, and build a foundation for long-term financial success. Conclusion Episode 188 is all about equipping you with the knowledge and perspective to navigate your financial journey. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your approach, the lessons shared in this episode are designed to help you gain clarity, confidence, and...

My series of interviews from Newport Folk Festival comes to a close with this Part 3 featuring Jake Cochran of Illiterate Light and the band flipturn.Jake Cochran, together with his bandmate Jeff Gorman, has run the Bike Stage at Newport now for four years and it has become an exciting nexus for the Newport Folk community and a centerpiece for tons of breathtaking musical performances. I talk to Jake about what cycling and the role environmental change play for Illiterate Light and we discuss all the ways in which Jake invites the band's fanbase into the fold. For my final interview, I'm psyched to have talked to flipturn for a full-band interview. Having honed their live show vibes over the course of many years, flipturn decided to chill for a bit in writing their second album, Burnout Days, and they talk to me about taking a beat but also how it has re-charged them as they head out on a global tour later this year! ==============================Episode Chapters:00:00 Episode Greeting with Host Josh Rosenberg: Introducing Jake Cochran04:30 Interview with Jake Cochran35:33 Jake Cochran wrap-up with Host Josh Rosenberg38:24 Introducing flipturn40:20 flipturn Interview50:20 flipturn Wrap-Up52:32 Episode Conclusion with Host Josh Rosenberg================================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Send us a textIn this milestone 100th episode, we kick things off with an unexpected story—mom literally falling through our ceiling! Nothing says celebration like a home renovation emergency that had us running across the house wondering if we'd need an ambulance (thankfully, she was fine and back to her busy-body ways the next day). The conversation quickly shifts to Gilbert Arenas' shocking federal gambling indictment. We dive into how the former NBA star was allegedly running high-stakes poker games with Israeli crime figures out of his mansion—the same place where he films his podcast. The potential consequences aren't just legal; we explore how this might impact the careers of everyone in his orbit who he's helped elevate.Cam Newton emerges as our pick for Shannon Sharpe's potential replacement in sports media. With his confident "we can't relate" takedowns of critics like Gillie Da Kid, Newton brings both athletic credibility and natural charisma that few can match. When someone with a Heisman Trophy and NFL MVP tells you they're in a different league, maybe listen? We don't hold back on calling out problematic behavior in our community, from Dr. Umar Johnson's questionable financial practices to the claims of "plastic-to-gasoline" from ATL engineer Julian Brown. Our Fantastic Four review explores how Marvel continues to struggle with properly tell a story with a proper origin, The episode wraps with an explosive breakdown of Love Island drama, revealing how contestant Kenny was exposed for using racial slurs to describe his girlfriend Janae in private group chats, and examining the disappointing colorist comments resurfaced from fan-favorite Amaya. After 100 episodes, we're just getting started. Thanks for being part of this journey—we've got big things coming that we can't wait to share with you!
He was one of the top prep basketball players in the state of Missouri in his junior and senior years at Central High School in Kansas City. So, when the colleges came running, he accepted a full ride to the University of Arkansas. Despite being unable to read or write, he went on to be one of the most prolific players to grace the Razorbacks' campus. In 1974, Tolson was the first basketball player to be drafted by both the NBA and the ABA, having been selected by the Seattle Supersonics and the New York Nets, respectively, playing for the legendary Bill Russell in Seattle. Following his basketball career, Tolson made the courageous decision to re-enroll at the University of Arkansas, and repeated all four years, this time legitimately. At the age of fifty-two, he returned to the university for three more years, earning a master's degree and graduated magna cum laude. Tolson's gripping story from his childhood in an orphanage to his academic achievements is not only an indictment of a system that would just “pass you along” from grade to grade as a hot basketball prospect without any educational accountability, but also an inspiring story of overcoming great odds to find success. He is the author of Power Forward: My Journey from Illiterate NBA Player to a Magna Cum Laude master's degree. https://www.deantolson.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org
Jeff Gorman is cycling on The Road to Newport and he's here to talk to all about this epic adventure. One half of the amazing and powerful rock duo Illiterate Light, Jeff, along with his bandmate Jake Cochran — who both pioneered the pedal powered and off-the-grid Bike Stage at Newport Folk — are cycling the 700 miles from the Shenandoah Valley all the way to Newport, Rhode Island for this year's Newport Folk Festival!! Illiterate Light represents the true epic nature of the DIY spirit — that authenticity, energy and boundless creativity can truly bring people together and even seek to create change. Jeff talks to me about what this epic year of 2025 has already brought the band, and we discuss the importance of bike riding, their latest album, Arches, and what it meant to Jeff to play with My Morning Jacket at MMJ's One Big Holiday festival this past April. -----------------------------------Show Notes:To follow The Road to Newport follow Illiterate Light on Instagram, @illiteratelightClick here for Illiterate Light tour datesFollow Roadcase on Instagram here: @Roadcasepod---------------------------------Episode Chapters:00:00 Episode Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg06:40 The Road to Newport: Cycling and Music09:32 The Bike Stage at Newport Folk Festival12:24 Artists and Performances at the Festival15:17 The Significance of Participation and Community18:23 Personal Journeys and Environmental Awareness21:26 The Future of Cycling and Music24:22 Conclusion and Final Thoughts30:06 Biking Through Life and Music31:36 Community Engagement and Bike Advocacy32:50 Innovative Touring: The Road to Newport33:26 Partnerships and Equipment: Jamis Bikes36:06 Preparing for the Journey: Logistics and Challenges37:23 Exciting Performances: Upcoming Shows and Collaborations39:51 The Magic of Red Rocks: A Dream Come True42:30 Collaborating with Influences: My Morning Jacket44:30 The Power of Music: Emotional Connections55:14 Support and Brotherhood in Music56:39 Celebrating the Release of 'Arches' and Its Impact59:07 The Creative Process at Sunset Sound01:05:17 The Legacy of Sunset Sound and Its Influence01:09:50 The Evolution of Illiterate Light's Sound01:15:52 Embracing Creativity and the Journey01:21:22 Preparing for the Road to NewportFor more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Ever busted a money laundering ring with a two-minute hunch? I did—at a bank in 2003—because dyslexia forced me to think differently. I couldn't read growing up, but audiobooks, grit, and a forgotten science called dual coding turned me into a pattern-spotting machine. Now, I've logged thousands of hours with audiobooks —2x, 3x speed—plus gigs of audio and shelves of marked-up books, out-talking PhDs with insight, not just facts. This is my protocol: audio first, text after, speed it up, reread, fight for it. It's how I aced tests, caught crooks, and proved the doubters wrong. Maryanne Wolf says we're losing deep reading—I say we can reclaim it. Want to go from illiterate to unstoppable? Listen up—I'm Almighty Ohm, and this is my edge.

This is an October 7th story, but one that begins not in 2023, but in October of 1894 with the arrest of French military officer Alfred Dreyfus, who also happened to be a Jew. The implications of his framing, arrest, incarceration and the fallout of his eventual exoneration reverberate today. Over this five-episode series, we examine how these events unfolded, and how they connect to the antisemitism that exists today. In this first episode, we begin with the fraught political climate in France, a secretly gay general, and an illiterate cleaning lady-turned-spy had to do with it all.

Many “mainstream” economists are bothered by the popularity of economically-flawed policy proposals like tariffs and price controls. Today, David Waldman presents today's KITM, and in a respected and well-established Thursday precedent, Greg Dworkin will join him for a portion of the discussion. What a maroon! Illiterate egotistic traitorous dotard Donald Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery with the sole purpose of gaining attention. Mission Accomplished. Trump staff (featuring rehire Corey Lewandowski) are quite accustomed to treating dead soldiers as doormats, as well as the live ones, so how were they to know a simple felony photo-op “thumbs up” among Arlington's freshest graves would garner such negative vibes? Especially once the key witness was silenced. Trump will say it's Biden's fault. Journalists will write down “Biden's fault”, which will be fact-checked as “true”. Our tiny speck of shared reality is being fought over memes, and at the moment they are shooting themselves in the foot. If anything gets shot, RFK Jr. will eat it. Every moment of Donald Trump's life has been a penny-ante flimflam, which you can now pay for in crypto. Meanwhile, the Kamalamentum continues its rise. Jeremy Fryberger's multipart KITM series describes how you can become involved locally, and why you should do so NOW. Today, Jeremy looks at the situation in Minnesota!

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, a judge in Atlanta was just arrested and removed from the bench after getting into a fight at a nightclub and assaulting a police officer. Again: this woman works as a judge, not a waitress at Waffle House. But, she is just a symptom of a much larger problem. We'll discuss. Also, I'll offer my preview of tonight's presidential debate. Climate protesters attempt a very unique and hilarious method of stopping traffic. And, a guy on Twitter is roundly mocked and ridiculed after offering some unorthodox life advice to young men. As usual, the peanut gallery is wrong. Ep.1396 - - - DailyWire+: Join us live on Backstage for real-time coverage of the presidential debate TONIGHT at 8:30 PM ET on DailyWire+.
